There were a few things about the way his kick landed that felt wrong, incredibly wrong.

Just before it would connect, Alexis went in for a grab - which, frankly, wouldn't help at all had she been an ordinary human. It could prevent damage to her vitals, but ultimately, she would still end up on the ground without even the chance to gain an advantage from controlling her opponent's leg. A single strike from Vos'stoorge's sword would put her to rest in the first few seconds of the fight, granting him a flawless victory along with entry to the next round.

However, it seemed that fate had something different in mind for him. Alexis didn't even budge one bit, holding still in mid-air same as a brick wall holds on ground. By the virtue of some incredibly powerful force, the girl both defied gravity and staved off a mighty kick with nonchalant ease. Perhaps, she was using some sort of levitation magic; for Vos, knowing exactly what it was happened to be the least of his concerns, him being unprepared for this kind of situation. Taken by surprise, only a mix of pure instinct and combat acumen guided him, years of training surfacing that very moment. The decision came to him fairly quick: without any footing and nothing to grab onto, chances were he wouldn't be able to yank his leg out of her grasp, so there was only one course of action left to take: offense. He had to either pressure Alexis into releasing him, or end her here and now.

While the momentum of his kick would still be surging through her arms, straining the muscle, Vos would bend his leg, bringing himself closer to Alexis, and then hook his left shin around her thigh. While this would put him into a strange position, the right shin till perpendicular to her body, this also provided more muscle power for him to use, allowing Vos to pull himself upright, bringing his knee towards his opponent's chest with the strength of both of his legs and his hips. Only having to overpower her triceps and forearms to do so, the mageblade would manage to cover their gap in physical ability this way.

Thanks to doing so, he would be right up in her face, while Alexis would still have one hand wrapped around his ankle and the other trapped in the crook of his knee, the unnatural hardness of Vos'stoorge's muscle making it harder to escape than one would expect. He would lose no time - launching his kick, he brought the dagger arm back to his chest instead of keeping it overhead, and now it would be primed to strike. A quick jab towards her face - and even if she leaned out of the way, avoiding imminent death, he could still hook the dagger around her neck on its way backwards and simply activate the Pulse spell, sending the shockwave right into the base of her skull; an attack that could either knock her out cold or rip apart the spinal cord.

All of this, from the moment Vos would realize he was trapped, and up until he would thrust his dagger into his adversary's face, would take less than a single second, fused into a single, fluid and captivatingly deadly motion of the body.

In theory yes, in practice no.

Rule of cool wins out in Arena fights, that and the balancing element of T1.

But how much those two affect the fight is up to the participants. Why not turn theory into practice?

Prepping only complicates the matter further. Let me explain why i think so.

Lets say, you have a kevlar vest and a magic projectile. But what does prepping a that magic projectile actually do? Will it be able to break through the vest or not, even if unprepped it was so weak it couldn't even bruise the wearer? And the opposite, what if the defender preps against a projectile powerful enough to penetrate and fast enough to land a solid hit?

IMHO, preps should scale with the abilities predetermined physical damage, as it was in Leeroy's Everlasting arena, not some conceptual quantity that doesn't correlate with any other type of measurement.
Cannot magic be quantified by it's effect? I do see such problems arising with pure magical attacks used against pure magical defenses, but fireballs, which you use as an example, can have their effectiveness measured fairly well by the amount of heat produced.
I tend to assume a middle ground, as you may have figured out. Prepping is a good way of building up power, but once pressure is applied, you don't really have the opportunity to do so. That taken into consideration, unprepped magic would be a mage's bread and butter.
I never understood prepping. Either you have your character's abilities to require prepping as a means of bogging down their power level, or you simply don't prep and attack right off the bat.

Example: a character capable of launching a gigantic icebergs at his foe faces off a pyromancer powerful enough to only launch a tiny fireballs. What can you do to even them out? Have the ice mage prep for his iceberg attack.

As i see it, prepping is something applicable only to those abilities, which are meant to be prepped.
Freedom and imagination? Sorry, but when the hell did that become a privilege of the high-tier characters?

As for your dissatisfaction with the current tier system, it is only natural. As i see it, we have opted to much more simplified system than before in favor of actually comapring the characters themselves rather than using the tier system as a transitional unit.

i like how obscure of a reference your custom title is
"That son of a bitch! He is eating my planet! HE IS EATING MY MOTHERFUCIKNG PLANET!!!!!"

@Impaqt Ill surely accept your challenge.
@Skallagrim Will do.

Well if you research the Troodon, you will find that it has highly advanced behavior and senses, and if had not gone extinct, could rival smartasses today. These dinosaurs. They are not extinct. Another thing is, they are not new to combat. They can mimic human kicks and tactics and such. And theier arms are not short porportion wise as the T-rex. Their arms are very similar to ours, though not as long they make up for that range in having advanced fighting capability due to their claws. And it has been discovered that they may have been capable of holding some objects. Aswell as, if they fight the same opponent a second time, they may have addapted to them, giving them the upperhand where they didnt previously. They have a body mass about the same as a medium sized human, thought weighing more, however they can run at speed of 50-60 mph. And they can spit irritative spit-stuff. Take that and put it into a pack of dinosaurs bred to fight and hunt. Theres some of it. :)

That still doesn't support your claim of them bieng able to beat powered characters well enough. For example, i'd say that Ido is way out of their range even if he doesn't use any of his magic. With superb spatial awareness, incredible reach when using pollaxes and a modicum of toughness, he could take on three dinos with ease.
The Hallowed Halls are actually pretty well lit if you pay attention to the picture. Some shadows here and there, but overall there is an ample amount of sunlight in the main corridors. I would imagine the offshoots are somewhat dimmer though.
