Sensors are not instant. Instant Communication only means two linked points are capable of contacting each other without delay.
I think that was the least important part of my question.
We can perhaps make quantum entanglement based instant transmission common. So there's a way to get two attuned devices to make instant message transmissions.
Perhaps you may even extend this to a quantum gate system which may have strategic significance.
Remember how e always had problems with the galaxy being too big and what solution we came up with last time?
There you go.

Anyways, I have 4 ideas:
- White Corps, Star Trekish faction but with megacorp like mega capitalist structure
- Morte, small nation with troubled past filled with wars
- Martians, War of the Worlds combined with a bit of oldschool sci-fi
- Militaris Sine Finis, a tiny faction of mercenaries taking soldiers from any part of the galaxy

Number 3 is a limit on magic. I have had more troubles with technology in the past then I have, hence why there is more restrictions. I also threw in the last line for a reason, in case more issues with magic were ever to arise.

And that is a speed limit, not a restriction on the types of FTL that may be used.
Planetary radius is pretty huge. Does it mean we can have tech that blows up planets? I think spell radius is about the least which needs balancing.

As for FTL, you may allow lower interpretations I bet but I mean methods that work entirely differently from the rest. You remember my slow but constantly on warp drives, right?
Also I hope instant communication doesn't also mean instant sensor speed because that means infinite detection range. I am sure you meant something less over the top. Just warning on its implications. I like FTL sensors and they are the only way for space opera style battles. So this part is kinda not relevant.
Still, I am the last guy to call for more rulings but these rules don't prevent people making ridiculous factions but may prevent fun loving bening players to do their thing.
Can't you just try to measure each faction as they are made? Many NRP games in other sites have technology and war mods for regulating tech or military alone. You don't need to carry this burden on your own.

There some things you cannot fight alone. ;)
For everything else there's MasterWaaagh.

As per usual I don't like the universal ruling on FTL. There are so many kinds of FTL travel, why limit it to one of the most boring kinds ever known?
You claim this game would feature science and magic but for some reason I only see limitations on the technological side of things yet.
@SigmaI will post my response with White Corps either today or tomorrow.
@Voltus_VentusI am here. It's just that I realized we pretty much lack some of the major players like the commies.
I know this is more like an excuse but was good enough to prioritize several other RPs I were playing.

"Welcome to White Security Services! My name is A.D.A. from White Corps. How can I help you?"

White Corps' AI guide and hostess greeted General Lith Diae of the Ashtar forces on Anuria with her default message. A.D.A. (Automated Database Assistant) appeared as a lifelike 3D hologram and had a surprising level of sentience. She accepted commands, written input, speech and any other forms of communication and known to execute them without any bugs. There was an option to also alter her appearance for the customer's comfort, albeit the algorithm which set her basic looks had already accounted for the preferences of different races and cultures. Of course her main purpose was to guide the customer and search for services which fit his/her/its demands. In particular this particular case it involved White Security Services, the private military branch of White Corps.

Lith peered at the hologram suspiciously, and adjusted it to appear more overtly holographic. The Ashtar tended to be a little uncomfortable around information systems that too closely mimicked the living mind. Even though the transmission was being routed through multiple encryption layers and only being accessed from network isolated systems at Point Jakurna, he was still feeling paranoid. Irrational, he knew; infecting their clients' networks with spyware was hardly a good way for White Corps to gain repeat customers. "Yes, program." he said with a slight grimace, "We wish to bolster our forces with additional armor support. Significant armor support. However, we need the personnel to be..." Lith trailed off, casting Hierarch Arctes a skeptical glance.

"Heroes. Light blessed, salt of the earth, lead by example type people." Arctes finished. "We are having a somewhat unusual morale problem. Understand that battlefield psychiatrists or speech makers will be useless; we require honest, simple men who believe in the strength of their own convictions. Can you provide such materiel and personnel?"

"Ever since the Fires of Anuria conflict the term 'hero' became a vessel of plenty controversies. One nation's hero could be the opposition's heinous war criminal. Starting from Stardate 2604 White Corps replaced the name of 'hero' with the expression 'model employee' within WSS. We strive to have model employees and most of our sub-contractors have a spotless record with selection of only the best. Our technical preparedness and equipment is renown galaxy-wide and WSS can field diverse types of weapons, armor and air support anytime and anyplace. Our branch White Security Starforce can give similar degree of freedom to deal with space-borne issues. How can we help you?"

A.D.A gave them a sales pitch mixed clarification while trailing the talks back into business Asking whether they can offer assistance is not a matter of 'ifs' or rather 'For how much?'. There could be extreme situations when most WSS personnel are occupied (this is a booming and busy kind of business nowadays) but for standard missions they always have people at their disposal. Following this A.D.A gave them a rolldown list of potential WSS units to hire while still offering her guidance to choose. White Corps had up to date information on the rough situation on Anuria thus A.D.A knew what she's doing. She was the modern equivalent of the door-to-door agent, saving the enterprise at least 10 million people's worth of salary. A.D.A was to comfort the customers, accurately identify their needs and meet them while making the most profit. It was a difficult job where both sides of the meeting would end the talks with the most satisfaction. In case of WSS it even meant she's potentially saving lives by not letting the mercenaries to risk missions with too limited forces.

...

With A.D.A's assistance, the General and the Hierarch assembled an ever growing 'wishlist' of WSS forces. Power armored soldiers, Mercutio main battle tanks, air support, infiltrator units, C&C integration staff, on it went. When they'd assembled something like a small army, A.D.A gave them the bill. The two Ashtar didn't bother to haggle --it was a skillset they entirely lacked-- and agreed to the requested amount of exotic minerals and materials. Being outside the galaxy-wide economy Ashtar currency had little worth. In turn even with nano-formers and matter synthesizers common one can see the worth in rare materials with highly sought-after properties. That was their deal with White Corps, a rather hefty sum. Yet Arctes judged the transaction well worth it.

It was a reoccurring issue Arctes had seen over and over again on countless fronts across a thousand worlds. The Ashtar require allies to fight with in order to properly function. Without... context? Perspective... the functionally immortal Ashtar had little if any motivation. They didn't require training or rousing speeches, they were good soldiers and knew of their right cause. What they needed is ironically to have someone who could die at any time, fighting their fears of death and struggling for survival. The rest is handled by the psionics, channeling these feelings of hope, fear and regrets to catalyze the rest of the Ashtar force. The presence of the so-called 'mortals' reminded the Ashtar of the value of live and thus they'd fight harder than ever before.
Such simple thing yet oh so increasingly difficult to pull. Arctes knew that hence he requested aid straight from White Security Services. Given the size of the purchase the full mercenary force will arrive only by tomorrow evening.
@SovereignI am kind of interested. Just for example wonder what you mean under scientifically possible.
A minigun which shoots black holes is actually kinda possible. It's about on par with the scientific possibility of creating particle accelerators which shoot neutral particles. Doesn't mean it's worth the effort, though. Or it would be an effective weapon at such small scale. (An anti-starship weapon which shoots decaying micro-blackholes? Now, that's something you can work with.)

Anyways, my question is that how rigid scientific adherence we're talking about?
Reading the sole posted NS it doesn't look anything dangerously tight, though. Nanomachines like that are borderline soft science.
No offense to WrongEndOfTheRainbow at all. His faction is pretty good overall.
Just noting that in retrospect maybe I have nothing to worry about to begin with.
Unfortunately the Kasyrinian Federation has no interests in Mercenaries.
White Corps is a nearly galaxy wide enterprise combining all sorts of business.
I am pretty sure there's something we can help you with.
I just mention the mercs since WSS is the most obvious way I can insert White Corps' actions into a war-centric NRP.
Arms trade, information, R&D and so on just to mention the most typical topics aside from hiring mercs.
Or perhaps you can attempt to do things like a raid on one of my research sites or attacking my trade ships because I carry cargo to your enemy.
The potentials are practically limitless.
Yet ironically unless we collab up a reason my hands are pretty much tied. Which is my issue.

@Sigma@OzerathShall we continue this in PMs?
Even if you hire mercs there are countless options you can choose from.
Basically hiring WSS often works by the client sending the request and the required parameters to the database and then he can choose from the various "search results".

Say, you are the the great leader of the Glorft Empire but live in a tumultous era filled with assassinations and backstabings. You are paranoiac and would rather hire outsiders from WSS. All the while you don't wish to show up with strangers so you request a security unit which doesn't appear to be different from the Glorft elite usually assigned to protect the leader.
Say, you get three options. there can be often more since overlaps of course exist.

Unit 092044 - All-Glorft shock troop unit with 11 combatants. They rarely take up security jobs but know the Glorft Empire well and their mentality is very similar to the Great Leader's choice of elites. They rely on WSS equipment during missions but use Glorft weapons for recreational purposes thus if required they can be equipped with those for the sake of concealment.

Unit 024456 - Unit with 9 members specializing at infiltration and providing security without making it obvious. They are willing to undergo surgical/cybernetic alterations in order to disguise themselves as another race and they have expertise at modifying their equipment to appear authentic yet retain most of the quality and capabilities of White Corps tech. Of course they are also far from cheap.

Unit 102244 - All-Glorft 10-man unit offering covert services within the border of the Glorft Empire. They are well-versed in Glorft affairs and known for their absolute neutrality. The also have equipment modified to look as if they originated from the Glorft Empire.

So in this entirely theoretical situation our still unnamed Great Leader has at least three choices. He can also modify a few parameters on his request to see more, the search engine also highlights finds that met nearly every criteria but a few if checked.
Convenience of the customer has the first priority, you see.
Of course the same kind of service or perhaps even better is expected in other businesses with the White Corps.
Just ask something and we find the solution.
