I would sooner face outright phobia again than be given a half-hearted apology by the same systems which did nothing in the face of injustice and to now seek to make profit from our suffering.

Pride Month is celebrate by those who have never struggled. Those of us who have - those who have been harassed, assulted, detained and debased - have no such pride in it. There is only ire and spite.

So sorry if I'm not enthused. It's just that there's nothing to be happy about now, and people just buy rainbow stuff from the same corps who need us kept down to sell them in the first place.

“There was a time when I was master of the universe. As I was staying ageless and motionless before my computer, flying untouched over human frenzy, cities rose and crumbled under my thumb, tiny people ran hurriedly to their death on the roads I had built and time flew at my command.
Then it all stopped, and I had to become one of those running specks. They call it 'life.'”

Hey, everyone! Yam here back at it again with yet another annual post-winter rush RP.
Mekhanauts is a military science-fiction RP inspired by works such as BattleTech, Dune, UnderRail, and Aposimz. It's intended to take some of the out-there tropes of hard, cold, facts-based science fiction, and with the introduction of fantastic and unearthly developments of the farther-than-perceivable future, all in a Gothic Realist subtext.
It's a blend of realism and fantasy means that the characters are developed as true to what they would be in the real world while they are place in situations that are completely supernatural. To put it simply, Gothic Realism is about how real people react in unreal situations.
To that end, Mekhanauts combines real, hard sci-fi concepts with the fantastic, combining and reconfiguring what can be known and what cannot be - until coalesced into one, syncretic faith: The Religion of Science, conjoined into what is referred to now as, "wisdom".
You are members of one of the uncountable numbers of warlord states in this fractured Imperium. Not as commanders nor bureaucrats, but as common people thrust unto their positions as the backbone upon which a new Empire shall be construed. You fight under the banner of the Admiralty-Governor Khorchidian - Lord of Kyzyl-Dash and heir-claimant to Sirius - common soldiers fighting over the fate of the Empire. There are countless warlord states, all claiming to be the true adherents and successors to Sirius, and Khorchidian is no different from the rest. But, you have a job to do, and your objections, aspirations, or motivations to be here may very well not matter to him one bit: He is still supplying you to do a job - with a large degree of autonomy to boot - is he not?
S E T T I N G
The Sirian Empire - which has ruled over near all-Mankind for close to six millennia - has found itself broken and scarred. Her children lord over their petty leftovers, where they bicker over the succession that was the Great Galactic War. The Milky Way Galaxy of Mekhanauts is a place of unbridled heroism with horrid acts and rectification of its structures, until one reaches reconciliation or apathy.
A majority of Mekhanauts' influences come from various older, more fantastical epic science fiction: It combines Dune's multilayered interactions with ecology, politics, religion, and emotion with the intrigue, fusion of science and magic into one entity of UnderRail. Mekhanaut's main nomenclature is of Kazakh, Armenian, Greek, and Slavic (Primarily Russian, Ukrainian, and Serbian) origin, fusing together old mysticism and legends of West and Central Asia with the cautious coolness of retro sci-fi. The world of Mekhanauts is as much of an operator of "Rule of Cool" as it is a cautionary tale of romanticism of empire and historical phoenixism.
Society in the 96th century is incredibly fractured, and drastically different from our own. A total coalescence into something that can be called "Imperial Culture" is, by all means, impossible. The Empire is a collection of thousands of worlds and even more floating colonies. Every world and colony contains hundreds of languages of various families and trees and countless more clans, and it is only by the tenuous connections of its upper strata has the Empire developed anything close to a coherent culture. Many even from the same world do not speak the same mother tongue as one another: It is only through Salchak - a trade language that remains only barely standardized enough to allow for some degree of mutual intelligibility throughout the wider galaxy - that any are able to even speak to one another. Even this is, from time to time, assisted by the utility of psyonik power to accentuate words or feelings, incorporating the necessity of psyoniks into language itself.
Slavery has always been a topic of incredibly nebulous legal tenure within the Empire. Slavery was never de jure legal within the borders of the Empire, but the practice had never been formally outlawed and persisted throughout the perpetuation of various indenturement and caste systems, which had transpired into may forms of coercive control - de facto allowing slavery. While most people who existed as various forms of property in this sense have had certain protections against them in the case of outright abuse or negligence, the hard fact of the matter was that the effectual enforcement of any of these rights were simply far too diffuse to realistically control - there were far too many planets and not enough infrastructure to effectively police these actions.
Many warlords - and Imperial Lordships before them - insist on the mass-creation of vat-cloned persons through the gene-banks of so-called "martial castes", where they are typically drilled from young annual age to fight for their creators', or otherwise are contracted out for mercenary service at hefty cost. Their freedom of movement is severely restricted, and their opportunities and knowledge are far removed from anything that is not combat-related. For all practical intents and purposes, they exist as the property of their creatives. Many local administrators believe that agrarian or industrial lifestyles has made a large part of the galactic population simply unfit for military service or warfare of any kind. Even with optimistic reforms, this belief is so wide-spread and well-entrenched in some regions of the galaxy that it would require at least a generation to overcome.
Juggernauts - great machines of war which have beared the brunt of thousands of conflicts across centuries of galactic warfare - are your companions, and you the eponymous "Mekhanaut". Juggernauts are war incarnate - towering machines that advance forwards with thunderous strides, bolts of war roaring from the weapons at their disposal, while connected to their core by their pilot's Psyonik Tether. They are terrifying combatants, fighting with all the skill and ferocity of a fully-fledged warrior as though they were moving their very own body, but combined with the durability and firepower of a main battle tank.
Juggernauts are not, however, simple machines. Though the continuous bond and the residual operation within each and every Core they posses, Juggernauts grow to possess a being all their own. Many Juggernaut suits are decades old, if not centuries, and have long grown to harbor their own sentience and persona. All but the most recent of Juggernauts develop what is a Spectre - a being that is unto itself another essence within the fusion of man, mind, and machine. To operate a juggernaut is no simple task as it is to drive a car or to steer a spacecraft, for each Juggernaut comes to bewitch their own senses of desire and self-preservation. They have their own intelligence - even if they are usually not capable of prolonged speech, but all operators know that, to a Juggernaut, they shall act far before they ever speak.
It is far from uncommon for old Juggernauts to be able to comprehend long-extinct languages from centuries or millennia ago, the result of far-lasting bonds between their former operators and their shared experience. Even the nature that they still stand is testament to their odds to their operators at times: While a nuclear blast or a solar pulsar might fry an operator inside until all that is recovered is a melted biological sludge, the Juggernaut often survives intact.
There is little more rewarding than to be a skilled juggernaut operator. Apropos riding a great dragon or tumultuous stallion into battle, moments between total control and no control.
Z Y U N - A Y R A Q
At the intersection of several Enkoispace routes, the Ayg'hri (Аъгхрі) System at first glance seems to be an unassuming place - only home to some artificial colonies and small mining operations. In such an unassuming system belies the gem of Zyun-Araq.
She is a frigid, terrestrial planet, the fifth from her star and possessive of one thin set of rings and four moons. The majority of her surface is of a cold desert climate, rocky and with hot, dry summer periods followed by long, cold, freezing nights, and only broken up by a strip of temperate steppe at her equatorial region. She is habitable - just barely - through the efforts of timely adaptation and ingenious architecture. Her indigenous aliens are an amphibious ilk - though primitive compared to us, they are a hardy and perceptive peoples, and pick up on new concepts very quickly. They have built little of a civilization for themselves, and have bequeathed themselves to their ancestral lifestyles as subjects beneath the Empire.
Zyun-Ayraq has also found herself home to another flock - followers of old, Earthian Abrahamic religion: We know them as Avrakhans, and for as long as there has been a good Empire have they constantly been a thorn in the side of the good nature of Azvari and the Empire. The Avrakhans are a largely nomadic sort, traveling the vast reaches of the planet in single-file caravans of yak-like creatures they call "ghurts". They were long ago sent here to earn off their continuous debt to the Empire as well as to allow them to provide the Galaxy with an invaluable service.
Indeed, they both guard something of far greater value on Zyun-Ayraq.
Sozyak seeds are unassuming things - they are bumpy, black or slate spheres with tiny, pink-lined ridges. Each is barely the size of a ball bearing, and possess a distinct gritty, saltine taste to them when eaten raw. They are hardy things, capable of surviving under deep snow and ice, where they thrive in the rapid melting periods of Zyun-Ayraq's hot seasons.
And each Sozyak seed contains enormous amounts of DELTA - the most potent psyonik drug known, and has provided the overwhelming bulk of facilitation of psyonik power throughout most of history. Its use in both biological and mechanical applications for astral travel is far too omnipresent to every truly undersell. From these tiny seeds is the DELTA within extracted and refined into various psyonik powders and reagents, from industrial-grade Enkoinine meant to be churned and thrown by the barrel-full into Enkoimetic Astrogation Computers to Desat psy-drugs that open minds to peer into the threads of time and space themselves. From these inoccuous black-and-pink dots from the backwaters of the Galaxy are they shipped off by the tonne, where they are heated and crushed and titrated and blended where they supernova in value. It is no understatement to say that the known universe's navigation relies on DELTA - Whoever controls the manufacture of DELTA controls galactic space travel.
This unassuming planet harbors the one of the keys to intergalactic travel and psytek, and has carved for herself a place as the Galaxy's seedy trading post. Her moons shelter smugglers and traders from all corners, all hoping to nudge in on the lucrative trade of Sozyak. It is imperative to anyone in the Southern Galactic Hemisphere - so close to the old position of Sirius - to control the segment and with it the tide of the great struggle.
Your mission is the pacification of Zyun-Ayraq. The overall control over the planet is essential for the continued operations of the war's progression, and the control over Zyun-Ayraq's strategic position and its Sozyak production is essential.
You are, however, far from alone in this goal: Already several warlords and rivals have begun to stake operating bases on Zyun-Ayraq. We cannot accurately assess their total strength or influence on Zyun-Ayraq, but their influence over the control and production of Sozyak is likely a tremendous source of their income - one that we must appropriate at once.
The locals have also not been the...most cooperative. Many of them erroneously believe that, because the authority on Sirius has been called into question, that rules and laws somehow do not apply to them. The Avrakhans have a considerable sway over the cultivation and production of Sozyak as it stands. It was believed that - by giving these cultists a token goodwill measure and shipping them off to this frigid lands to forever and put themselves to greater utility to all Humankind than to stand idly and preach their horrendously antiquated scripture - this small act might allow some of these Avrakhans to be appeased with the idea of relative self-governance while producing an invaluable commodity to our Empire. Alas - it seems that, as the old saying goes, if you give a rat a biscuit, it shall ask next time for the entire pantry.
Your top priority, above all else, is the security of Sozyak production and the total control of Zyun-Ayraq. All other means are secondary, and you and your comrades are free to pacify the planet as you see fit.
We are likewise on something of a tight schedule: Our leader, the Admiralty-Governor Khorchidian - Lord of Kyzyl-Dash and heir-claimant to Sirius - is highly expectant of our success. It has been made clear in no uncertain terms that, once our mission is complete and the planet secure, that His Majesty expects total control to be transferred to his jurisdiction (Or warlordship - whichever you prefer). Of course, when this is all said and done and Zyun-Ayraq is under our control, we might have something to say about that...

MECHS:
- Called "Juggernauts" - About 8-10 ft tall - Each one is personalized to the user, decorated in livery and personal paint patterns, holy sigils, war trophies, badges, etc. - Every Juggernaut progressively develops a "Spectre" -- Spectres are "machine spirits" that co-develops as the operator uses their juggernaut for extended periods of time, and the juggernaut's CPU develops personality quirks in turn. -- Every juggernaut has to be unique to the user unless you rip out an entirely new Core and Engine. -- People close to the Operator like close friends can potentially operate the Juggernaut without too much negative feedback. - Requires a psyonik tether to operate optimally - can be operated "unlinked", but responses are slow and "mechanical" -- "Unlinked" operation is done in long marches, not in combat zones, saves on power and user fatigue -- Requires more focus and mental + physical energy to operate "linked in" -- "Unlinked" operation is like driving a car. - Juggernauts are capable of limited autonomous activity, but will generally not coordinate with other units in any meaningful way.
SHIELDS: - Electromangetic energy shield emitters are common and found on nearly every person, from the lowly foot-soldier to the largest warship. - Shield emitters are set to one of three general frequencies: Low, medium, and high. -- The protection given by the shield emitter is dependent on the frequency against the impact velocity of the attack in question: -- High frequency shields provide excellent protection against lasers and direct energy, but melee weapons will cut clean through them. -- Likewise low frequency shields are excellent against melee attacks but provide poor protection against direct energy weapons. -- Medium frequency shields provide the best protection against ballistic attacks like bullets and missiles.
PSI POWER: - Psykhyk power is necessary for effective astral navigation. - A relatively (read: In the past few thousand years) mutation in the human genome - Developing psyonik powers on one's own through biopsykinesis takes decades of meditation and careful regimen, typically anywhere from 25 to 40 years. - Most opt for psykho-neural bioconstruction, usually either taken by injections or implants. - Psykhyk power usually manifests as more conscious, empathetic power to align one's self with another's thoughts, wishes, feelings, and desires, and taps into the greater Enkoisphere - a planar sphere of all consciousness and psyonik power - which allows for faster and further computation of one's thought processes. - Even with bioconstruction or biopsykinesis, it is often difficult to centre one's self or to project power for too long without losing control. Auxiliary sources such as enkoinetic tethering implants are often needed to maintain control for extended periods of time.
Azvanrism: - Inspired by Tengrianism, Hinduism, and Buddhism. - Henotheistic: there is an Almighty God with a pantheon of Lesser Gods and Patron Spirits which permeate the greater universe. - Patron Spirits are typically tied to several key cosmic phenomena such as black and white holes (Divine creation / destruction), cosmic rays (divine inspiration), nebula (Birth + conception), and so forth. - Azvari Temples are dug into the Earth: -- As you enter temples, picture as wholes or circles in the ground, evocative of Black Holes: Entering symbolizes a portal into the spiritual world. -- Each temple contains gardens of sand and lichens, caretaken for and symbolic of constant change and the origins of life as something even so small and insignificant as moss on the wall. -- Prayer Hall (Eschachorium) is situated in a giant swirling pattern where one's feet dangle unto the pit below. You feel yourself being dragged unto the new portal. -- Speaker is never physically seen: They speak, never show, like a Catholic confessional. - Clergy, called "Keepers", wear black robes with varied, androgynous patterning and design to them. - Keepers - Azvanrism has it such that transcendence of mortal preconceptions of sex and gender is an affirmation of godliness and devotion. -- Becoming a Keeper requires a forsakenness to one's physical conceptions and thus void their sex and gender: The logic being - if a soul or a spirit in its quintessence does not have definitive gender - then if we as mortal beings are genderless, we are closer to being our true, spiritual selves. -- By doing so, it can be thought of as a step along the journey into co-aligning one's self with the spiritual self and a renouncement of the trappings of the biological being. Like being "baptized" or "born again". - Keepers will (and do) bless literally anything.
The Decree of Sayan: - This controversial decree was issued by the Sirian Azvari Parriarch and is widely considered to be one of the final straws that caused the Great Galactic War. - Due to the beliefs regarding the transformation of the soul and apotheotic humanism, the Azvari Parriarch - supported by the cultural beliefs of much of the Galactic Aristocracy in regards to the issue - passed a decree in the Azvari faith that prohibited biological conception and all therein related acts, only allowing for vat-cloning to be the acceptable form of reproduction. - Under the theological claim regarding the nature of the soul, it was issued that such means of conception were the only righteous means by which a good Azvari could ethically reproduce - as the construction therein of vat-cloning coaligned the newborn ever-closer to their eternal soul. - This decree went over poorly (understatement) and it was largely blamed as unrealistic and as the major last straw of the social and political fractures of the Empire.
DELTA: Diethyl Lesythanolamine - commonly known as DELTA - is an organic, nous-reactive, chemical that is extremely rare in nature, and normally must be artificially synthesized. It is a viscous, organic compound that contains a binary amine, and is usually found as a solvent in water as a high-molar acid. As a result, the pKa of DELTA in its acidic form is high compared to most organic acids, but remains a relatively weak acid owing to its molecular structure. However, DELTA's relative readiness to donate electrons in bio-electric generation makes it unique among organic acids. As such, DELTA is a potent psyonik catalyst.

BASIC INFORMATION
► FULL NAME || Over the course of several thousand years of cultural cross-polination and linguistic drift, names are gonna be pretty funky. Our main inspirations for names and languages when making things were Greek, Turkic, Armenian, and Slavic - so consider these as a baseline for generating a name. ► CALLSIGN || It's bad cred to give yourself a callsign. If you have one, let the other players determine what it is. ► PRONOUNS || You know what these are. She/her, he/him, they/them, etc. ► AGE || This one might be tricky for the lore. Given how a lot of people are vat-born - clones made through genetic modulation - in this day and age, someone may have an annual age that may be different from their biological age. For example, being born into warrior castes of certain clans may be "born" as a late teenager or as a young adult, and from the moment of their birth are thrust into training regimens. Particularly desperate worker societies may also birth one as a full adult, so as to fill a constant demand for new forge and manufactory labourers. However, most of the highest and lowest echelons of society remain to have most children have a regular childhood growth cycle. ► HEIGHT || Self-evident. ► WEIGHT || Self-evident. ══════════════════════════════
SKILLS
► [Skill here] || Basically, list out what your character is good at. "Juggernaut piloting" and "shooting" are skills that rank up there in importance with "walking" and "breathing", so list anything else out of the ordinary of what's to be expected from them. ══════════════════════════════

══════||BACKSTORY||══════

(Anything you think that needs saying but doesn't fit anywhere else goes here. )
► NAME || Juggernauts usually have their own individualized names on top of the designation given to them by their creator - especially for older suits. The Spectre within an ancient Juggernaut will have its own name that it responds to and identifies with, and will expect it to be honoured - if not humoured. ► POWER ALLOCATION || <<NOTE: ALL STATS ARE OUT OF 10. THERE IS NO BENEFIT TO HAVING GREATER THAN 10>> The total Weight of all the 'naut's Weapons and Subsystems / Unit's POW stat. ► ENERGY ALLOCATION || The total kY of all the 'naut's Subsystems / Unit's ENE stat. ► STRENGTH || Strength is the total raw output and structural integrity of the juggernaut. A higher strength score indicates that the juggernaut can, for all intents and purposes, hit things harder and lift heavier things on top of its usual combat load. ► AGILITY || Agility refers to the speed and handling characteristics of the juggernaut in question. Higher agility means a quicker, more reactive suit. ► ARMOUR || Armour is how damage-resilient the juggernaut is against direct attacks. ► RELIABILITY || Reliability is how much external, wear-and-tear damage the juggernaut is capable of withstanding and still going on. It also determines the resistance of the juggernaut against EMP and Psy attacks. ══════════════════════════════
(Just a brief outline of the juggernaut's overall appearance, its paint/livery, any scratches, burn marks, rust, and so forth. Feel free to stick all the techno-babble in here that doesn't fit in the parts selection.)
══════||SUBSYSTEMS||══════
(List out the subsystems employed by the 'naut, and in what slot they're in.)

Mekhanauts will be using a CYOA-based system for juggernaut creation. It'll be used more as a guideline (and for fun) than for any mechanical base when it comes time for RPing. It's mostly finished, but here's some previews for those interested:
Yeah, the girl upstairs is some kinda Instagram girl-wannabe. Doesn't wear anything but black and gets in shouting matches sometimes. Dunno too much about her.
So you can freely advertise a gay fantasy book in your own thread, but my boy @LetMeDoStuff gets his ad on his bio taken down because it apparently violates the rules, huh
I demand justice! Dieselpunk shall not be silenced any longer!

-- Likewise low frequency shields are excellent against melee attacks but provide poor protection against -- Medium frequency shields provide the best protection against ballistic attacks like bullets and missiles.

Mekhanauts will be using a CYOA-based system for juggernaut creation. It'll be used more as a guideline (and for fun) than for any mechanical base when it comes time for RPing. It's mostly finished, but here's some previews for those interested:
Well, okay. Since we have this discussion like...a few times every month I suppose i'll just pitch in some of my thoughts on the matter:
If i'm just going off of everything that's been said here in the past couple of posts, yeah, i'll sum it all up - mods are useless, users come and go, and the entire site is basically at the mercy of having a stubborn old guard who loves the place and still bothers to use it.
Truth be told, i've long given up any idea that there's going to be any actual, lasting changes ever made to the site, and that the RPG that we have now is probably the RPG we'll get until the day the site goes down.
Yeah, there's lots of other Roleplaying sites that are way more active and have integrated IRC and actually have a text editor and BBCode support worth a damn. But that's also not why we're here: If that was the end-all-be-all of roleplaying then this site would have been abandoned a long time ago and here we are, all here bitching about how our usual RP site is going down the shitter. There's a billion other sites that host ten thousand cookie-cutter anime-faceclaim-only isekai SoL Bullshit RPs that are either chicken soup for your teenage soul or are actively shaving years off your life the longer you look at the interest check: And here we are.
Even as i've watched this site dissolve into a pile of its own shit as it dies a long, drawn-out death of ten thousand cuts and burns...every single time i've thought of writing off the site and just logging off one day and never logging back on, there's always been that one RP that keeps me on.
It's all down to the average RPer. And no matter how the mods don't give a shit or the contests dry up or whatever - i'll be here for as long as the folks are here. Love you guys.
BTW, anyone can help me drawing up the map? So I have none of thr Hannoverian territories. No Rhine terriyories aside from some dots. Typical Prussian territories otherwise except that Saxony in its entirety belongs to me, even if in a personal union.
Also no Zelleverin until a few years later. Prussia only reborn since 1825 tends to push back a few things.
Appearance: Illya's colossal height of 171cm is hardly going to intimidate anybody, but at least his stature lets him fit into cockpits with ease. He's an athletic sort, light in build and quick to react, and always gives an energy that he's always ready to spring to life. Illya never had a whole lot of experience with the "upper echelons" of life, and with it comes an unfamiliarity with the conventions some in the academy might find utterly banal. His uniform is always just slightly off - a crumpled collar, an undone button, his tie loose and crooked, so on.
Personality:
Illya usually comes off as fairly easygoing, if a bit jockish, getting competitive with a lot of mundane contests as a form of camaraderie and a healthy dosage of energy. He's a person who enjoys pushing boundaries, not just for the things he cares about, but also those around close to him: Illya will usually encourage others to push themselves beyond their usual limits through these little contests, which he can get particularly heated over. He doesn't mind a bit of roughhousing and generally is pretty open to new experiences.
Illya's drive for becoming the best pilot the galaxy has ever known is matched only by the most arrogant and self-centered of Knight Aces: For every other subject of his studies, Illya is a straight C student, and it's not for lack of trying. He isn't unintelligent by any means, but he does lack the discipline to really shine when it comes to doing things that don't occupy the forefront of his mind. When he puts his mind to something, the results are often fantastic and innovative, but Illya doesn't do well with "busy work" and other humdrum things that one also needs just for basic education. Organization isn't exactly his strong suit; he's a bit messy and tends not to get chores and homework done right away, usually waiting until the absolute last minute to get them into gear. What he might lack in tidiness he sure doesn't lack in loyalty. He's a very upfront person and is fairly easy to get down-to-earth with, and it's usually fairly difficult to truly get on his bad side.
History:
Born as Alexandra Karamazov in the Velara metropole, the child of a mid-level manager at a faltering pneumatics engineering firm and a data analyst was viewed to be among the many unassuming children who would call the many arcopoli of Mars "home". Money was never really a concern to the Karamazov household: Data analysis across the numberless manufactorums of Mars was a thankless position from which ceaseless new reports and corrections emerge, while the ailing Svarov Engineering Works had fallen to the wayside as investors and contractors got cold feet, but kept afloat to a steady stream of royalty payments and bond invetments. The Karamazovs were housed in one of Mars' many apartments with few luxuries and little downtime to enjoy the ones they had together. Their parents were loving but rather distant: Both of them could rarely spend time with them and dedicated much of their time to their work duties, leaving their child to be raised in the care of others.
Come secondary school - like a lot of teenagers - Illya thought that the coolest thing you could possibly be and do was pilot a Knight. Piloting a Knight was cooler than being Grand Marshal of the United Front. Piqued from a young age, Illya strove to enroll in one of his secondary school's piloting clubs. The club of the school had officially mandated that 18 was the age of self-entry - much too young for him when he started secondary school, but could be shortened to 14 with their parent's permission. They took the initiative in this circumstance and forged their mom's signature on the document and sent in the papers. When Illya's parents found out, they were understandably disappointed, but whereas their mom grew to be more supportive of the endeavor as time went on, his dad never really caught on to the idea - he insisted that the whole affair was far too risky with too little payoff for it to really catch on into a career, and insisted that Illya put his schoolwork ahead of any pursuits of piloting. He would do well, scoring in several championships, but his school wasn't anything on anybody's radar. Sponsors passed the place up - it was one of countless thousands of secondary school clubs all over Mars and none of any particular prestige or homage. And for a time, his father was right to say that his future as a pilot would go nowhere.
Until Svarov Engineering Works was purchased as a subsidiary under AMKA group.
Illya's father was now a proud engineering manager at AMKA, and at his inauguration party, he spent that entire fated night in various state of inebriation, storming about the party space ranting and raving and pacing as he dithered on his diatribe against virtually every disappointment he had in his now-son - said and unsaid. This lasted for about an hour, when his final remark had struck an otherwise aghast audience of promoters and executives at their new firm, when he remarked how he had wished,"(he) spent his time studying and not becoming 'champion' of that stupid knight-sim club."
The director of promotion had just looked up from his datawatch. He looked back down, re-checking something. He nodded back, and his eyes widened at the confirmation of his thought:
It was about to be Pride Month. And either, they could do another boring campaign - a little story here about some nonsense about 'equal opportunties in engineering', a few flags there - and maybe some modest returns on an utterly overused generic feel-good tirade...but that never looked good to the board and superiors.
Or, he could push his bets on an underdog - give a kid a dream who never had a whole lot and run with it - and make an advertising campaign off him that'd push AMKA from a niche mobile knight developer to the forefront of people's hearts and minds. And spend a tenth of the budget of an advertising campaign on a sponsorship, too.
So, he stepped forward, almost ready to allow himself to be punched or toppled or have a glass smashed over his head for what he might say against an impassionate drunkard's flesh and blood, and spoke curiously:
"Mister Karamazov...how old did you say they were?"
Mr. Karamazov blinked."Eighteen." he answered.
The director nodded. He cracked a warm smile back at him. He was drunk out of his mind, sure, but this was a chance: A chance to capitalize on an opportunity, to get an in, to get them to look good - and if this worked, they'd be killing a whole flock with a single stone toss. The lean man took another step forward, folding his hands behind his back.
"Has he been accepted to university or academy?"the director inquired. Mr. Karamazov looked down into his glass, shaking his head once.
"Hasn't accepted anything yet."he snorted. He gestured to take another sip of his near-depleted drink, but stopped at his lips."Nobody has given 'em sponsorship."
The news delighted the director into bloom, stretching the corner of his lips ear-to-ear.
"Oh."he nodded back politely. That caught his attention. Mr. Karamazov looked up, pulling his glass down. Right where he wanted.
"He's the champion of his knight-sim club, you said?"Mr. Karamazov rose an eyebrow, slowly nodding in perplexion. The director gestured behind his back. Seconds later Mr. Karamazov felt his datawatch buzz; He'd received a contact invitation.
"What was his name, again?" Capability:
If nothing else, Illya has heart. He doesn't give up on things easily and is ready to go in for a penny and in for a pound. For those of us who like more quantitative measures, Illya is very quick to react to things, good in making quick decisions and thinking on his feet. Coupled with some sharp eyes and good perception, Illya is good at noticing threats at a distance and being able to engage first. With much of his time spent towards engagement exercises and their review, he's good at predicting movements and adjusting himself in turn.
Yona • Shell • 9m
Appearance:
The Yona is a medium Knight frame, built from a modified skeleton of the Vovchek program. Standing at 9 meters tall and weighing in at 15.7 metric tons unspecced, the Yona is a general-purpose knight frame that serves as AMKA's second product offering into the knight's field. Illya's Yona is currently painted with its default desert tan and black color scheme, though there have been plans made for different coloration schemes to be present.
Manufacturer:
AMKA (Аерокосмічна та механічна конструкція аргір / Aerokosmichna ta Mekhanichna Konstruktsiya Argir, Argyre Design for Aerospace and Mechanics) is a rapidly-growing engineering group specializing in aerotech and hydraulic technology. AMKA is one of the newest hounds in the pack - young, sharp of teeth, and full of energy - but they're far from top dog. No doubt though, they have some ideas about changing some of that...
Originally founded as a specialized producer of gravitational technologies for spacecraft and outer colony platforms, AMKA has grown considerably in the past few decades, the result of smart business decisions and keen company buyouts. The company is most well-known for its civilian applications, specializing in industry and commercial tech, but in the past decade they have begun to make long strides in military technology. Their flagship project, the AMKA Vovchak, was far from the most innovative Knight design, but placed a unique selling point in its ease of maintenance, modularity, and low cost.
Design & Specification:
After the success of the Vovchek's market penetration, AMKA was ready to undertake a truly fledged knight project. Pulling out all the stops from their previous project - the Vovchak - AMKA felt that it was time to stop producing just above cost and instead focus on the failings of its past project. Key shortcomings of the Vovchek typically included limited hardwiring, narrow field of vision, and sluggish responsiveness.
Projekt Yona was specifically developed in order to counteract all of these main issues. Boasting an improved panoramic vision system, stronger transmission, and refined electronic wiring, Yona retains all of the strongest points of its predecessor in being a versatile, all-rounding system without the issues that plagued the Vovchek, while maintaining its modularity and ease of maintenance and enhancing its handling.
Though it shares over 80% commonality in skeletal parts with the AMKA's earlier Vovchak line, the Yona's external composition is vastly different. With superior composition in PLET and beryllium carbide ablative overlay on top of a titanium alloy frame, the Yona sports a fantastic power-to-weight and defense-to-weight ratios. As with its predecessor, the Yona sports several hardpoints for various weapon and support systems, giving it a significant degree of mission adaptability.
Armaments:
The Yona is capable of the utilization of all but the most niche of UFAF weaponry, but has been outfitted with a number of specific weapon systems for its initial display.
The M127 APCW is a general purpose laser cannon system, designed originally for ASB and AA gunnery systems. Utilizing a 532nm Gd:YAG (Gadolinium-doped yttrium aluminium garnet) crystalline focus and a Beryllium-ion battery, the M127 is a powerful short-burst laser system that can rapidly diffuse even puncture the thickest or refractive of materials. Owing to its secondary-state battery feed, the M127 is capable of using replenishing "recycler" batteries, extending field longevity and operational range. However, it's rate of fire is often limited to conserve its energy, as rapid fire of the weapon tends to defuse the power output to less-than-optimal rates.
The T-28 CCW is a dependable vibration blade intended for close combat. Using a rapid array of vibro-pulse microwires, the T-28 can hold its own against most conventional weapon arrays in close combat. Unlike most beam-based weapons, the T-28's strength as a virbo-weapon comes from the capacities of disruption in its initial strikes due to its rapid pulsation, not in the sheer penetrative power of a beam or blade itself.
Usually mounted on the shoulder or arm hardpoints, the P-46 Ballistic Weapon System is a laser-guided belt-fed gyrojet system. Firing 40mm APDSS gyrojet rounds, the P-46 packs quite a punch for its size, though due to the inherent nature of the gyrojet system, its effectiveness is limited in extreme close quarters.
Subsystems:
The Yona comes with following additional systems:
The PM-09 "Veles" is a medium-frequency electromagnetic force projector intended to deflect or diffuse impacts across the general surface area of the Yona just prior to its collision. It operates in both short-burst and extended-burst modes, the former providing much greater deflection at the cost of greater energy usage and limitations to movement while the ADS is in effect. In a pinch, it can be used to disengage objects or targets latched onto the unit itself and potentially fry their own electronics due to the EMP effect, at the risk of potentially causing an electron discharge which could short-circuit the system entirely.
The M236-B is an advanced rangefinder and targeting CPU which provides supine detection against medium and short-ranged targets. Capable of a 270 degree operating radius in tandem with the Knight's regular camera systems, the M263-B variant comes with additional systems for VRNV and Ultrasound modes of operation, further improving detection against electromagnetic cloaking and smokescreens.
The SV3 is a deployable A/T drone that can easily be stored on the Iona unit's back, shoulder, or arm hardpoints. Equipped with its own Y2000 GPU and twin-linked M33 Multilasers, the SV3 unit is capable of teller-operation from the Yona host unit as well as autonomous performance.
