I've seen people do this in the middle of a scene with other people, as well. You didn't do that(though I'm of the opinion you could have waited for @Azakma to clarify Clementine had run off or something, and you did kind of assume she would immediately) but it still means it cuts out the possibility of other people at least watching the fight or something, as you absolutely can have the actual fight without interruption if you want to when it's like this.

People could still watch their fight, it's only that they can't interrupt it. By the time I was ready to post the Collab, I did not notice Raineh's post of a character watching the fight with the hippotatomus until after I posted the Collab. The only one who could have possibly interrupted was Clementine and she wouldn't unless Azakma wanted her to just die given how weak that character is and the personalities involved in the fight. In addition, while someone could have theoretically interrupted them during the fight, both DIO and Juri would have destroyed them. Also neither was going to pay attention to anyone else unless their fight was interrupted.

Personally, I had quite a bit of fun writing the post and I think Lugubrious did also. However, I promise to be more mindful of other players in the future. I am going to keep the post as is, though.

I still don't like collab posts, but I'm glad that you're going to be more mindful of other players. And regardless of how I feel it's too late to change this post now.

And it's good that you had fun, that's what RPing's for. I just think collab posts can be troublesome in RP's.

Hate to be nitpicky, but we do cover the entire fight, meaning that 072 would be able to witness it in its entirety (including ki, lightning-fast strikes, teleporting, and ice powers) and be able to comment on it. Were you planning to do so in another post?

Also, just in general I'd be interested to know what you people think of the fight. Structure, flow, so forth.

No, he just arrived. It's basically me saying "hey, dropping my character into this scene".

Eh, should've been more tactful, but this is how I tend to view collabs: 'post, post, post, WALL OF TEXT FROM NOWHERE, post'. Beyond checking the start and end, I'm not terribly interested in parts of a roleplay that have been ring-fenced so that even if I was just one street over, the whole thing would be finished before my character could walk round a corner. They seem more interesting to do than read, especially when the fight's more or less for the sake of it. The roleplay's barely started.

The collab didn't take place in its own little pocket dimension. Real time passed during the duel that anyone can use. Anyone in the entire roleplay could have found them, watched every blow and witnessed every power, and can now interact with them. There is absolutely no 'cutting out' people watching. And participating doesn't mean leaping in for no reason to start whaling on someone they know nothing about; with a high-profile fight like this, someone in the vicinity could have easily decided to dodge some mashed potatoes or get hit by cracker crumbs. The only thing that having a collab post did was make it so nobody could directly interact with Juri or DIO.

The fight's purpose was to establish the character of two separate individuals, begin a relationship between them, and start a subplot based around Juri developing her own stand. If I did things simply for their own sake, I'd belong in the Free section. Oh, and this roleplay's been going for nearly a month.

Next time there's the chance of a collab, however, I'll make an announcement post about it on the OOC, and anyone who wants in can come in. That's the single way it could be easier for other people to get involved.

It's not the single way: the much easier one is to not have a collab at all. This did cut people out, because there's an assumption nobody would've intervened and that all characters are happy to stand around being a cheering section.

When I said 'the roleplay's barely started', I meant in the sense that the story's barely gone anywhere. It's still a fight for the sake of having a fight.

EDIT: Not to say that the fight doesn't have a point, but that it was a fight.

First, I'm not personally concerned at the fight moving on without me. Of all the characters in Roanapur, I think DIO is possibly the one I want Clementine to have the least to do with, particularly since no one followed the line of logic I'd been hoping for; that everyone who arrived in front of the Yellow Flag was powerful, dangerous and at least some level of immoral, and so this little blood covered girl was probably no exception. On that note, does DIO have some sort of aura-sense to gauge people's power levels, or is he just sniffing blood and going from there?

and Third, having gone over the collab post again, I don't think flow is really an issue; the big obvious benefit is fluid transition from attack to result and dialogue to response. The one paragraph that was longer than the rest could probably have used breaking in half, either before "Once she had attacked DIO long enough" or before "DIO, having lazily blocked..." just to give a breather to the reader, but that might just be me. I also think that in future collaborative posts, it might be beneficial for everyone to give their dialogue (and maybe thoughts) a personal text color, to make it stand out a bit more readily to anyone that's just skimming or easily distracted.

I also don't think it would have really hurt your collab post to have broken the whole thing up into two or three posts over the course of a day or two, in case someone just really desperately felt their character would have participated or interrupted the fight; That's their choice, even if it isn't a very clever one to make. I don't think it's something that must be done though, particularly because that would make it that much harder to get anything done if anyone involved has time constraints.

TL;DR, Collab post looks fine to me. Pro side: more fluid interaction between involved characters. Con side: It's a bit bigger of a meal than probably anyone is used to for this RP for right now.

EDIT: For the idea that someone would have intervened in the first place, excluding the dialogue at the beginning and the recovery and dialogue after, the events of the post probably took 20 to 40 seconds. A combo from Juri, a counter and then combo from DIO, and then a counter from Juri before she passed out.

I don't have anything against collaboration posts myself really. I thought the Dio/Juri one was rather nice, though I can see that some people might be a bit put off by its length.

Challenge ideas for you!

One of Us: the ordinary inhabitants of the city are all polymorphed into a picture-perfect copy of one of the various characters. For a set amount of time, all the real characters must move through the city and 'tag' people they think are the real ones by attacking them (or just touching them for less violent characters). Tagging a correct person gets a set amount of points; tagging an incorrect person obviously gives the character away, hurts the poor civilian, and delivers a lasting penalty to the character. Getting tagged is an instant disqualification, and all clones of the tagged character are restored to normal and teleported indoors.

Swap Meet: characters' minds are swapped and they are assigned some task to do, like gathering x items or defeating x monsters, while swapped. They carry over most nonphysical abilities and some other attributes; Filia swapped with Chun-li, for instance, would gain increased power (though not skill) and have Samson transposed to Chun-li's hair. On the other hand, Chun-li would be left with a normal-haired Filia body and decreased power, though she retains her Kung Fu expertise. Not all swaps would be fair; I imagine things like Twilight Sparkle / Wario and Overlord / Dizzy would be very funny. The swaps could be made using a random generator.

Diver Down: the entire City is submerged beneath an ocean. Marine flora and fauna appear, and there are plentiful ways to get air, such as trapped bubbles in alleys, buildings, phone booths, etc. Everyone's given some task to do. Naturally, some great sea monster could appear.

Heaven's Door: after an enormous rumbling, chunks of the city fall away into an infinite sky, and the remaining parts become sky islands. Finding a single hidden treasure might be good in this.

Shut Up and Drive: a massive go-karting event through the City or some great track. Characters get custom karts but any cheaty powers are inhibited. It's a race to the finish!

Born to be Wild: all characters are transformed into animal versions of themselves, with most of their same powers. Again, they're given some task to perform. Ones that are already animals don't change.

I Bet My Life: a tag-team challenge. Characters, after teleportation to some central zone, are allowed to choose their partners starting from the weakest and ending at the strongest. Once all teams have been created, they're let loose in some exotic location for a grand deathmatch. A team is eliminated if both of its members are incapacitated or one of its members is incapacitated and not revived within thirty seconds. The trick is that either character on a single team can 'bet their life' by saying so, after which they'll collapse on the spot and their teammate will receive all of their strength and powers, tailored to suit them appropriately. A team in which a member bets his or her life has an extended time to win it all before that team is counted out. Last team standing wins.

Monster: at the start of the event, all characters are moved to random locations in a new, exotic locale, and a timer begins. One person randomly becomes a much larger, more powerful, monstrous version of themselves, (for instance, Filia and Dizzy) and receives points for damage and KOs it accrues while it is the Monster. Any character who deals the finishing blow to the Monster becomes the next Monster. The challenge is not only to hold the title of Monster longest while the timer's ticking down, but to

As a player and a co-GM, I will start out with saying I am really not a fan of any challenges that involve transforming or swapping characters.

This is largely because I generally feel like people have signed up to play a character, with that character's personality, appearance, and powers all intact. This is how I feel about it at least.

That being said, the non-transforming ones have potential, though I'll have to look into them a bit more.

One Of Us seems tough to manage because it would be totally arbitrary or powergamed whether anyone ever found the real person.

Hm. Well, you're the boss. Or co-boss.

You're right, people who have characters in the same area would have to think about how it would play out beforehand. That's reaching suspiciously into collab territory though, so perhaps it's just not a good idea.

I will say that Challenges that have effects that transform characters into other forms will be optional rather than mandatory, and that if people don't want to change their characters into something else, they can choose not to. It's just a bit hard for some players to have their characters change and have to adapt to things they're not prepared for. On the other hand, people that want to change to fit the theme of a Challenge or adapt to certain situations and/or environments are encouraged to do so.

@Azakma Oh right, Super Skrull's accepted. Sorry for forgetting until now.

I'm planning on suggesting my own challenge ideas as well.

Currently I've got a sort of gauntlet-style thing which would be mostly free for all, and a dungeon crawl where people would have to work in teams in different areas of a huge dungeon.

It might be prudent for anyone who wouldn't want their character altered at all in some event/challenge or another to speak up. That way, we'll know if enough people are averse to it to exclude those challenges completely.

I for one would be okay with it.

I absolutely don't want any challenges like that, frankly, and I know there's some others who share that opinion.

The most I'd be willing to do is temporary wardrobe changes occasionally.

Duly noted, though it's worth waiting for those people to say so themselves, I think.

With the co-gm against it, though, I've come up with a few more event ideas. Some are edited versions of the alteration challenges. I did not count 'I Bet My Life' as an alteration challenge.

Thunderstruck: All characters are moved to a new and exciting arena, where one selected at random by the Viewer is 'charged'. This has no effect on their appearance save for a faint electric aura that makes the charge easy to recognize. The character acquires a point every second while charged, and anyone who touches the individual is charged instead, making this a chase kind of game. Special movement abilities for a charged character, like flight or teleportation, are limited.

Play Ball: Some kind of super sport involving a ball, obviously. Rules are up to the Viewer to decide, but two teams is the most likely option.

Land Before Time: The city returns to nature, sporting prehistoric sights like tar pits, steaming jungles, slimy swamps, lava flows, and glaciers, and it gains an unhealthy infestation of dinosaurs, mammals, reptiles, bugs, sea creatures, and more, from Stegosaurus to Dimorphodon to Pulmonoscorpius. The objective? To survive the many dangers of the ancient world and find the magnificent Golden Egg.

Life is a Highway: A grand demolition derby in an epic arena, with personalized vehicles and a whole lot of mayhem! Think a slightly less grim Twisted Metal.

Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger: everyone gets mechs. Whether it's a race, a battle, or something else, the Viewer chooses.

Smoke + Mirrors: Every character is hunted by a palette-swapped doppelganger of themselves, with stronger abilities. It's up to every character to figure out the trick for beating their clone, be it outsmarting, eliciting help, or some other method.
