So, we have empty slots for a mages and familiars, and not a ton of time left before the ceremony is up. This was something we promised, and the slots are still up and won't deprive newcomers of their chance to join. After all, we are always open! So, we've come up with a fun contest for you! Now introducing, St. Fortuna's first canon-shaping contest!
Monster Design Contest!
The rules of this contest are simple. You design a monster using the monster species CS below, post it in the OOC, and if it wins, you get a prize! What's the prize? The five winning monsters get to become canon and will be placed in a soon-to-come Bestiary tab in the opening OOC post. The players who make the 2 best monsters get the big prize, they get to make a second character! We're kinda really short on girl characters here, so keep that in mind.
The rules are for monster design are simple. No monsters larger than a school bus, no overpowered monsters, no half-human monsters, and the monsters must be original creations BY YOU. I don't care what art you use for them, but don't go submitting a Chimera or a griffin here. The monster's name, body, and powers must be designed by you. If it's a generic name (i.e., Blank Slime) that's fine, as long as you make something to fill in that blank. You can also mesh up the names of existing animals ATLA style if you want, such as what I've done with the Bearcat.
This contest will go on for 3 days, or until all contestants have submitted a monster. You only get to submit once, so make sure it's the one you want.

She has to at least spend thirty minutes on her long brown hair everyday, to make sure each curl or wave is exactly the way she wants it. Her grey eyes are often framed by long lashes, thanks to the power of mascara. Her pale complexion is possible because of her diligence, sunscreen, and a cute pink umbrella she totes on sunny days. Aside from mascara, blush, and lipstick, she doesn't put on too much make up because she thinks that it will ruin her already beautiful face. One could only begrudgingly admit she is pretty, but the same cannot be said about her personality.

She might actually be a pretty quick learner if she applied herself more, at least, that is what her past teachers had written on her past report cards. She was also manipulative, selfish, and overall unlikable. The only people who would hang out with her are desperate guys who do her bidding, or girls who were both terrified and jealous of her, waiting to stab her in the back. However, she is surprisingly aware of her situation and makes the most of it. She makes sure that no one could get close to her and uses insults as a defense mechanism.
But of course, underneath the confidence and iciness, is a lonely, insecure girl. Maybe... Somewhere? Like really, really deep down.

On a warm, humid July afternoon, the first and only child was born into the Iovine family. The baby was frail and sickly, but she was still better off than her mother who soon died after giving birth. The father, a semi-wealthy business man in the cosmetic industry, was heartbroken and scared. He had just lost his wife, but he might soon lose his daughter as well. Thankfully, after a few days in the hospital, her health began to improve. He named his beloved child, Mikayla, a reminder of his beautiful wife, Kayla.
Kayla grew up in Maefeld for her entire life. Her father was often busy with business meetings and work, but she occupied her time with her cornucopia of toys. He would get her anything she wanted because she was the only family that she had. Growing up, she became proud of her looks because of the compliments given to her by her father's work associates and her caretakers. It especially made her happy to hear that she "looked exactly like her mother".
When she started attending school, she used to be rather popular. She was a bright enough student to do well in her classes, pretty enough to attract attention from boys, and she was always dressed in the nicest clothes. Of course, with popularity comes jealousy. Many of the girls in her school disliked her but pretended to be her friends to get close to her. It took her a while to catch on that they were actually talking behind her back and secretly doing petty things like hiding her textbooks. Although, Mikayla was discouraged at first, she did not take their meanness, lying down. While, it might have been better for her to confront her teachers about it, she began to give them a taste of their own medicine instead. She began to turn the girls against each other with lies, and it turned out their friendship was as superficial as they were. Learning her lesson, she decided that she would only use people to get what she wanted and to never let anyone close to her again. Friendship was only a weakness.
There was not a single person who had not heard about St. Fortuna's Academy for the Higher Arts. Mikayla, well aware of the prestige of the academy, was quite insistent on getting in. Her father was a bit hesitant at first, since it would be the first time Mikayla was away from home. But after much persuasion and begging on her part, he agreed with hopes that it would help her daughter mature in some way. He had hired the best tutors for her to help her write her essay, and prep her in general so she would be able to do well in the prestigious school. If she was able to maintain her grades and not get into trouble, she would be able to stay.

-Adrenaline Rush. When a Bearcat has been threatened or perceives a threat, they go berserk, attacking anything and everything in their vicinity until the threat is gone or the Bearcat is exhausted.
-Yowling. Bearcats are known for their high-pitched scream that can startle would-be hunters and inexperienced adventurers.
Weaknesses:
-Water. Bearcats cannot swim, due to their heavy bodies and thick fur, and they hate and fear water more than anything else. A quick splash is all a hunter needs to get them out of berserker mode, and the cat will flee, screaming all the way.
-Intelligence. Bearcats are not smart creatures by any means, and have terrible memory. Because of this, they are easily trapped and tricked, and quickly lose interest in prey they can't catch. On the upside, this means that despite their demeanor, they never hold a grudge, because they can never remember why they were angry in the first place.
-Fire. Bearcats are terrified of fire, as their instinctual aversion to water means that they are completely vulnerable to it. Merely waving a torch at a Bearcat is enough to send it running, but be warned! If trapped between water and fire, the Bearcat will never willingly enter water, and will attack the fire holder.

Bearcat fur is often used in winter clothing, and because they are pests, Bearcats are allowed to be hunted for private and commercial purposes. Domestic Bearcats are common pets, and adapt easily to new environments. Though it is now illegal, Bearcat fights were a common sport in the past, with the caged animals being forced into berserker mode to attack each other for onlookers amusement. A couple issues we have noticed.
First off, her father’s income is never specified. What does he do? What is his job? He apparently sacrifices a lot to give them the illusion of wealth, but why? We need to know his job and what he does to make sense of this.
Next up, this is a big question. Why does your character want to go to St. Fortuna’s? It’s a very expensive school, and the equivalent of $30,000 a year isn’t easy to come up with. It’s very prestigious, true, but if she has poor grades and a bad attitude and her father is concerned about their finances, surely it would make more sense to send her to a less expensive school? There’s not a lot of motives here, beyond that of a man desperate to give his daughter everything. But I want to know about Mikayla’s motives. So far, her history is more about her father than about her. There’s nothing to say how she developed this personality, if she’s had issues with back stabbers before, or how she views her father. I’d like to see more about Mikayla’s thought, motives, and her personal history. There’s not even a city she’s from. It’s the details that help build a character’s bio. Don’t skimp on it.

For starters, your character’s height. This is a trend I wanna stop right now, but 4’10” for a 16 year old girl? You realize how unusual that is, right? To put it in plain terms, 4’9” is the average height for a 10-year old boy. The average height for a 16 year old girl is 5’3”. If you could make your character’s height more plausible and bring us back from the brink of having Extremely Tall Boys and Extremely Tiny Girls, that would be much appreciated.
Next up, this is something we didn’t make very clear, and that’s on us, but a Mages and Familiars general don’t manifest their magic/ability until 12-14. Some don’t have it manifest until after they first bond with their partner. So your character prepping to be a Mage at a young age like 5-10 doesn’t make a lot of sense, in this context, when she could turn out to be a Familiar.
Also, Mage is not a profession. Mage is a person who has the ability to use magic. It’s something you’re born with and can’t change or erase. That would be, in this world, as strange as saying “I wanna be white when I grow up!” Pretty strange, right? That’s how it is in this universe. Mage and Familiars is simply the classification of people who can use magic, and people who can’t.
Next up, for both her parents to be untrained is rather strange. Even in public education, Mages and Familiars get some training. Untrained would mean their their powers could manifest randomly, which would be dangerous. In sum, your character needs some work, but isn’t unworkable. Put them on the stretching rack, clear up the stuff with the mages and the parents, and tell us where the snakes are. After that, we’d be happy to review your character again. :)
