Leith stared at her for a moment before he said, "Don't believe ya. Never known you to have a good bone in your body." He sighed, rubbing his face in his hands. "But I can't bring myself to care right now." After a while, he said, "You really do remind me of her, Kaye. Her name was April; me and Christina got married in spring, April was born two years later in, you guessed it, April. Figured that we'd ought to give the season some credit. She was my little sunshine; worst kind of kid you could ask for, as she never gave me a break, but I loved her. My world revolved around the girls."
He glanced over at Kaye. "You never give me a break, either." He smirked, just a little bit.

Basil leaned back from Jace just a bit, and asked nervously, "Um...you're acting a little weird, Jace. Are you okay? I mean, I'm glad you're feeling better and all, but..."

Kaye flushed a little at his comment, feeling more like a child underneath his scrutiny. He had never made her feel like this before and for once actually felt...tamed. "I am sorry to hear that, but...I can be one of your daughters." She hugged Leith for first time since she had met him. "Can I call you Paps?"
"I am feeling great. What with my near death experience and all..." He paused a moment. "I am glad I survived, though. I am even gladder you were there to save me..." he stared at him lovingly and slowly leaned towards him until his mouth brushed his ear. "You really did save me...on more accounts than one. Ever since the day we first met...you have saved me."
Kaye looked over at the two and gasped slightly. "Lookie, lookie! My plan is Working!" She whispered excitedly. "Be quiet and don't ruin moment!" She jumped up and down happily.

Leith looked over just in time to see Basil jump to his feet, taking three hasty steps away from Jace. He shook his head, narrowing his eyes at Kaye, "What the hell, Kaye?"
"Jace, what in the world do you think you're doing?!" Basil asked, cheeks flushed. He folded his arms over his chest, though it was similar more to him hugging himself. "You're acting very strange right now. You do realize that, right?"

Kaye looked at Leith innocently. "I didn't do anything but amplify his real affections," she said, crossing her arms. "But I would have expect3d at least a smooch from them before things went south. It even says so on the label..." One thing popped into mind, though...how did Basil seem so unaffected to the drugs? No humaj had ever fought the effects of the chems in such a manner before...
Jace looked like he had been physically struck when he moved away but continued smiling optimistically. "I feel fine. better than fine in fact. I feel great. Why don't you join me, Basil? We can feel great together." He didn't even know that sounded, but he hadn't meant it that way.

"Feel great by yourself," Basil muttered, taking another step back.
"Doesn't look like anything affectionate's going on," Leith said, glancing at Kaye, "In fact, it looks more like you're destroying what relationship they made have had."

Jace took a step towards him, swaying slightly. "Why..are you running? I want want to love you, Basil. At least a hug?" He held out his arms for a hug. God, did he really just say that he loved him? Why the hell had he said that?! The words were out before he realized it and even then he couldn't truly comprehend the weight the words possessed.
Kaye shared a look towards Jace and Basil before looking at Leith, at a loss for words. "It isn't working... Something isn't right..." she said the last part more to herself.

"Love me some other way," Basil said, turning away. He wanted to leave, but knew that he couldn't just do that; for one, it would only be worse for Jace, and two, it'd cause more danger for the entire group if he just ran off into the dark wilderness.
"You can't force people into relationships, Kaye. It doesn't work that way," Leith said with a shake of his head.

Jace stared at Basil in silence for a long time before scowling slightly, if only to hide the hurt and confusion in his eyes. "Fine...I can take the hint, but know one thing..." slouching slightly, walked towards Basil until he was mere inches from him. For a long while he stared at him in silence before leaning closer. Even if you grow to hate me...I will always be here to protect you, even if it is only as a shadow... will here for you." He leaned over and gave him a quick kiss on the cheek before he could move away, gave him a quick smile, the stepped before turning his back to him.
"I will be...somewhere. doing a patrol or something." He didn't know what was going on, but he had to get away from Basil lest he do something even more stupid that he would regret later. He was honestly frightened of what was happening and Didn't know how to go about controlling it except to run from it. He grabbed his gun and begun to walk off.
Kaye watched as he walked away and looked between the two guys who were left before finally settling jer eyes on Leith. "He shouldn't walk off like that."

"No, he shouldn't," Leith said, contemplating on it for a moment. He stood up, wiping dirt off the back of his pants. He then looked down at her. "You take care of Basil. I'll go after Jace. And once all of us are back, it'll be your job to try and get the two lovebirds to make up--and no, before you say it, not make out, but make up. Got it, doll face?"

"Probably not," Kaye said, smiling at him as if oblivious to the who situation. "But you can count on me. I will talk to Basil...promise." She saw how serious Leith was, so attempted to keep a stoic expression. It was unclear if it worked but she did it anyways.
Once Leith left, she looked over at Basil and walked over to him, hands on hips. "Mind telling what that was all about?"

Jace wasn't particularly paying attention to where he was going as long as he was getting away. The fact still eluded him as to what the hell had happened but was mostly certain he had been drugged with something. Never would he have acted that way in front of Basil. He had most likely ruined everything with him and couldn't dare face him in this state. For some reason, even after he left his side he was the only thing he could think about. Oh how close he had come to kissing him...
The thought brought an immediate blush to his cheeks and wanted to punch himself. Never would he have done something like that without the help of some unseen, otherworldly force in the works.
"Repeat after me...'I am a fucking idiot...'" he muttered himself.

Basil glared at Kaye. "And just what do you mean? You were probably the one behind it all, so you should fucking know."

"Yes, indeed you are," Leith said, popping out from behind a tree. He leaned against the base, one finger holding a lit cigarette and the other holding onto a revolver. "Now, repeat after me. 'We all already know that. We have plenty of evidence to support that thesis.'" He smirked.

Kaye was taken aback by the sharp tone he had taken, not knowing he was capable of such harsh words. "Why must everyone assume that everything is my fault?!" She glared at him. "Okay, so I did have little bit to do with it, but you did, too! You are the one who actually put the "spices" into the food! And furthermore, it is your fault because the chems didn't affect you! This was supposed to be both of your moments!"

Jace turned to glare in the Ghoul's direction. "I am not in the mood to put up with your bullshit, rot-face."

"You told me that it was a spice!" Basil shot back. He shook his head. "I didn't...realize that it was a Chem. But you shouldn't blame me for not reacting to it when you shouldn't have put it in there in the first place." He narrowed his eyes at her. "Both Leith and I trusted you, and you went and did that as if it was nothing more than a practical joke. How much longer do you think you can do stuff like that before people get sick and tired and leave you for all of the bullshit?"
He snapped his mouth shut, cheeks flushing from shame. He averted his gaze. After a moment's hesitation, he said, "I'm...I'm sorry, Kaye. I shouldn't have said those things, but..." He'd allowed his anger for his prior domestic life seep into his present words; he closed his eyes shut tightly, awaiting Kaye's own retorts and perhaps physical attacks. "I'm really sorry."

"Hey, at least my nicknames for you are creative, rather than just plain derogatory and offensive," Leith remarked, but chuckled. He relaxed against the tree more. "Like, I've got a few good ones so far. Lead-head--you know, because it's supposed to be ironic? Lead is supposed to protect against radiation, but we found you dying from it instead? No? I thought it was pretty good. Humored me for a couple minutes. Uh, brain-waste; yeah, I like that one, too. Kinda connects back to the whole radiation ordeal, but you know, it's also relating to the fact that you're an idiot, as reviewed in adequate detail before. I need a new one for this situation, as well; can't let this one slip past me. Huh, let's see here...dope-for-brains? Nah, nah, too much like brain-waste. Smooch 'n Beans...maybe? 'Cause you know, the Chem Smooch was mixed into the beans and you were trying to smooch Basil back there. Too soon? Nah, never too soon to laugh at what hasn't killed us. I'll have to go over that one before I make it official, though."
He took one last drag on the cigarette before flicking it onto the ground, crushing it with the toe of his boot.

Kaye winced at Basil's verbal assault and stared incredulously at him for a long time. Her eyes started watering as tears threatened to fall and qiickly wiped them away before he noticed, but was sure he knew. "You know what...? I...I do the best I know how and you can go to hell! Your type always think you are better than me, you know? You are all the same! Just because you have the brains while the other guy is the brawns. Well..." she had no idea what she was trying to say and looked away, teeth clenched together. "I...fuck you! This is the thanks I get for trying to help someone! Your buddy almost died today and I was trying to show both of your feelings for one another before it was too late! In this world, death hits you as fast as it takes a bullet to strike." She fell silent for a moment, looking at the ground. "Then one day...you wake up to this. Welcome to life!"

Jace looked at the ghoul, death incarnate rittled in his fiery glare that he set on Leith. His grip tightened on the gun, almost tempted to shoot him but barely refrained from doing so. He held his gun in one hand as he walked over to the ghoul, grabbing him by the collar of his shirt. The gun slipped from his grasp before it registered in his mind and formed a fist before punching him as hard as he could in the cheek.
"You fucking carcass." He spat on him, practically growling. "Get up and fight me now, you bastard."

Basil stared at her, frowning. He then said, "I appreciate that you helped us. I've also...appreciated the company, despite the circumstances, but..." He shook his head. "No matter what Jace feels for me, I do not feel that way in return. Perhaps I could, with time and contemplation, but at the moment, I'm not interested in romance or anything of that relation. And I refuse to pretend as if I do." He then added softly, "And the world isn't so bad. And even if it really is, then it's our faults, not the world's. There are still so many opportunities to make things better. So why are they still so bad? Because people instead choose to keep hurting each other. That's the only reason."
He stood. "Thank you for your concern, Kaye. But I'm afraid that you were assuming things."

His jaw knocked to the side, Leith only smirked. He then said, "Eh...kinda been a long day. How about tomorrow, though? Give my radiation powers a few hours to charge up again, and you'll have a real challenge."

"You know...that is what I believed for many years. We are the sole owners of our fates to decide our happiness and demise, right? It sounds so...simple, living that type of life. But it is all bullshit! If we are the sole holders of our own fates, then how did the decision of a select few bring such destruction and suffering upon an entire world of people?" Kaye looked off to the side and fell silent for a long time. "As kids, we were all told by our parents the fairy tales of choosing our own fates and living life as happily as we could. When I was a child I believed in those stupid stories. I was going to find my prince charming, move into a big white house with a picket fence surrounding the yard with a dog to run around outside. It is amazing how the innocence of a child can stay in tact even when the world is crumbled apart underneath their feet.
She finally looked up at Basil, glaring slightly. "I didn't have my fairy tale ending and neither does anyone else. That life seized to exist many years ago, even before the bombs fell. Society has been crumbling for a long time because when the childish innocence was taken from them, they realized the only way to make a good place in society is to take it from others. That is simply the laws of nature...taking from others so they may live happily. If I'm not mistaken, I believe that was a lesson taught by...Darwin?" She gave him a haughty smile that said 'I'm not as dumb as I appear.'
She realized she was getting off topic a bit, so decided to get back on track. As she continued her monologue, she turned away from Basil and stared into the glowing embers of the fire. "Bottom line, we are not the heroes of our own stories, because there will always be someone to come along to steal that life away from us, if you have what they desire. We are all the victims and martyrs for others and that is all we ever will be. If our lives suck, then it isn't of our own making. That was simply the bed that we were made and we have to lie in the consequences of others actions." Her thoughts were whirling in a tornado and she didn't even realize she wasn't really talking to Basil, anymore.
"I know you don't really know me and don't really care to know more than you have to, but I am not speaking out of pessimism...this is the hard truth that I had to learn myself, you see? While I was working on my fairy-tale ending, it was stolen from me in a split second, taken away in a flash of light and a small wisp of smoke. If you take nothing from this conversation but one thing, just remember this... It takes a lifetime to make something of your life...but only a short moment to destroy it all."
Kaye blinked her eyes and looked away from the light, allowing her eyes to adjust once more to the pitch blackness before standing up. She looked over at Basil with a stern gaze. "I may be naïve, immature, and childish in your eyes, but this is what I have left. My insanity is the only thing that keeps me sane nowadays. And I'll be damned if I let you stand there judging me like you actually have a clue...because you don't. You know nothing of the ways of the real world and are living in the clouds of your fantasies, thinking you're going to be a hero of sorts. Let me ask you something...
"Do you know what makes a hero, Basil?" She paused a moment to allow him to think on his answer. "Death. A person who dies fighting for a hopeless cause. Do you believe finding this G.E.C.K. is really going to make a difference? You think you'll go back home to everyone cheering your name and parading you around on their shoulders through town? Take it from someone who has lived it...it's a dream. And if you don't wake up...you really are going to get that hero title after all. Or lead your friend to his own death trying to make you happy."
Though forced, she gave Basil a small smile. "You may not want to believe it and remain oblivious to his affections, but that idiot really does care for you. And if the situation presents itself..." an involuntary tear scarred a path down her cheek, making her quickly look away, "he will not hesitate to die in your place, protecting you.
A long silence fell over Kaye after that as she fell deep into her own thoughts. Never before had she given such a speech, but the words spilled effortlessly out of her mouth as if she'd recited the words a million times. It was definitely uncharacteristic of her, but they were thoughts that had been pinned up for a long time; she just didn't have a situation to present itself where it might even be remotely relevant. If she had said such words to Leith, he probably would have only shrugged it off and told her to lay off the chems. The honest truth of the matter was, though, despite being on chems at this moment, her mind was clearer than it had been in awhile. Perhaps it was that nudge from Basil's harsh words that made the gears start in her brain turning again, but she couldn't say for certain. Had she even said all those words aloud, she thought? She couldn't have been for certain, but as she took in Basil's expression, she knew he had definitely heard the words.

Jace stared at the ghoul, a little bewildered that he'd said 'no' to his offer. What the hell did the ghoul expect to happen when he follows him and starts insulting him in this manner? His blood was boiling in his veins by this point and felt like his skin was going to melt away if he didn't release some of the pent-up anger he felt right now.
"Fuck that. I said fight me!" He wound his arm back and punched him in the gut, expecting him to at least block the obvious attack but he just stood rooted to the spot. "I can go at this all night until you pick up your fist and actually do something with your life, you coward! Fucking...roach-face!"

Basil was silent for a long time, but finally scowled and said, "Living in a fantasy? Know nothing of the 'real world?'" He shook his head, standing with clenched fists. However, he made no move toward her. "Look, everyone has been through more than their fair share of hardship. You're not the only one who has lost people, who has been abused, who has been taken advantage of. You don't even know for who or why I'm going through with this. For the people back at my hometown? Fuck them! I honestly couldn't care less if they live or die!" Perhaps that was harsh, but why should he even care after everything that they had put Basil and his father through, just for being born into a role that neither of them were capable of adequately filling? "I only do this for two people. For my dad and for Jace. I may have only lost one other person that I genuinely cared about, but...but at least you've had people to care about in the first place. I'd give anything for those memories."
That emptiness crawled back in, sinking into his head as he thought more and more.
He became quiet again, but then asked, almost in a whisper, "What if you always felt as if you're doing nothing more than watching someone else, just floating above them? It's like you're tethered to them through a rope or, or a chain. They're...you, in a way, but you're not actually the one making the choices or anything. You're just someone who got front-row seats to the first showing." He wrapped his arms around himself. Even quieter he said, "Maybe...maybe if I do this, then I can have something to ground me. To make me into that person. So that I don't have to feel this way anymore, and Jace won't ever have to worry about me leaving him again, and my dad can be just a little happier, at least, and...and it'll be my life. You may have said that's a pointless goal, but I don't care. I want to try. I have to try because I can't just go away without Jace having something left of me behind."

"I'm not fighting you, kid," Leith said after a bout of coughing. He shook his head. "But feel free to fight whatever's really bothering you because I know for a fact that it isn't actually me."

Kaye fell into a long silence, not knowing exactly what to say. She was beginning to think something was astray about Basil and had started thinking so when the chems hadn't effected him earlier; even Leith had experienced some form of effects from the chems. yet Basil had remained oblivious and unaffected as everything.
"You are one weird kid, I will admit that. You speak of yourself in the the third person almost. And those chems I put in the food...they didn't even affect you. Almost as if you ain't even human."

Jace glared at the ghoul, slowly approaching him again. "You are my problem and the bitch in your control is my problem. Everything was fine until you two waltz into our lives, fucking everything up!" He wrapped a hand around the ghoul's throat and slammed him against a tree harshly. "And that crazy bitch you are guarding made Basil despise me! I would not be surprised he abandoned me by this point."

Basil was quiet for a long moment, not daring to respond to her. He then looked worriedly toward the direction that Jace had taken off in. "Shouldn't they have been back by now? If they're not back soon, I'm going to go look for them."

"That boy ain't going nowhere," Leith said, prying Jace's fingers from his throat. He then shoved him away. "And like hell he despises you. He looks at you as if you're the sun and he's just revolving around you. For God's sake, you fucking mole, he told us that his whole reason for doing this is for your sake! Well, his and his dad's. But for you to act as if he'd suddenly hate you for going a little wacko on the Chems for a minute or two is just plain stupid." He gestured toward the camp. "Now, Kaye and me will get out of your hair just as soon as she's satisfied with her payment for her services. I'm just her guard, okay? But until then, we're stuck together and you're going to have to deal with it. Now let's go back, you and your fun-sized packet of denial can make up, and then we can be on our merry-goddamn-way to Vault Over the Fucking Rainbow!"

"You will do no such thing. I am supposed to watch after you and it would be stupid for two groups to be lost out there. Besides, if your boyfriend comes back and you are gone, he will kill me...if he doesn't kill me anyways." She paused a moment before continuing, "I know you are trying to change the subject, so I won't press you. Although I will tell your friend what I know."

For once, Jace was struck silent as he let all sink in. His ending comment also struck him silent as well. He looked at the ground and took a deep breath, trying to calm down. Once he felt more in cobtrol, he opened his eyes and looked at the ghoul. "Ready to head back...slime bag?" He forced a small smile. "Is that a little better?"
