Lora Croft
Rick O'Connell
Indiana Jones

By today's rigorous academic standards, they were all terrible at their jobs.
But in the Twenties they'd be lauded for bringing treasures and riches to their countries, whatever the cost to the native people of the lands they explored.

I want to do an RP about a group of archaeologists and hangers on in the 1920's, with a touch of good old Hollywood gun toting, risen mummies, and ancient curses to boot.

We can hash out real deets as soon as I have some interest, but here's a few things I have already begun to consider:

Fun character interaction(feuds, witty banter etc) is a must.
As hinted above, this will be a world where "every myth is true." Gods exist, though most have been sleeping for a while. Try not to wake them, would you?
Magic and the like might exist, but not in the overt way you'd see in a high fantasy world.
I have considered steampunk elements, though I wouldn't make this an actual steampunk world.
Possibly episodic, where each player GMs a short storyline in turns, each one focusing on a different job.
I'm not sure whether or not I want to use real locations. I may use fake ones based on real places. Or, if we do the above, each GM can decide for themselves.

From the way you described it, it sounds kind of like an RP I was in a long time ago when I first joined the site. Definitely interested.

Oh yeah? Would you mind telling me what you liked about it, or what seemed successful or not?

Name:
Age:
Appearance:
Experience: Sort of like your bio. Tell us about schooling or past experience that would aid them in their field.

Go ahead and fill it in if you have something in mind.

The year is 1922. We're going to work for an imaginary university, under the financial backing of a wealthy German inventor(living in England and trying to gain popularity in the social scene). Our "digs" start out as a vanity project, but are going to end up wildly successful.

It was an RP called "Spookhouse" and had to do with a mixed group of individuals working together to protect the world from the occult. So there was a lot of room for growth with the players since we started out just meeting, then going on all these subsequent adventures full of actions, thrills, drama, and banter between the group. What worked for it was the diverse cast of characters that were all working together, so from start to finish you saw all of the characters changing due to the people around them and the places they'd been together. Plus all of the challenges we faced were great as well, challenging enough to really make you think about what your character's going to do, but not so jarring that it pushed you away from the story. So tying it all together, it was the group dynamic, adventure, and action that really made that RP for me. As for things that didn't work, I can't think of anything. It was one of those golden RP's that seemed to just hit the right amount with everything.

Hopefully that makes some sense.

Name: Professor Gene Rusterford
Age: 48
Appearance: Medium height, and dumpy. Not exactly fat, but clearly has never worked a day in his life. Has a thick, bushy, graying beard, and round spectacles. His face a smooth and broad. His clothes are clearly expensive, the kind usually found on a university professor.
Experience: Professor Rusterford is well read in many indigenous cultures of South America. He has been on a variety of archaeological digs, and is capable of identifying almost any artifact that can be found. While he lacks physical experience in adventuring, his knowledge is top notch.

Name: Hans Von Hessen
Age: 52
Appearance: Short and squat, with broad shoulders and face. His eyes are pale blue, and his hair was once the color of straw, but is now almost entirely gray. His hair is, however, still just as thick as when he was a young man. He dresses very well, betraying his wealth, and wears a pair of pince nez on a golden chain. A second golden chain runs across his belly, leading to the pocket he keeps his watch in.
Experience: Professor Von Hessen started life in Germany, quite rich already from his family. He received adequate schooling for most people, but found it always lacking and took it upon himself to supplement it with his own reading and experimentation. In the first half of his life, he became known as an inventor and genius. When the Great War broke out, and Germany's involvement became imminent, officials in the war effort came calling, hoping to put his genius to good use. But they found him already missing, all of his inventions and notes either taken with him or burned. He reappeared after the war in England, already having citizenship under mysterious circumstances.

Now he lives a life of leisure, but still has his fingers dipped in a few pies. One of them is the archaeology department of the Stonebridge University.
He has gone through considerable political and personal effort to ensure his war veteran nephew citizenship alongside him.

Name: Wilhelm Von Hessen.
Age: 25
Appearance: The family resemblance between Wilhelm and his uncle is clear, though the younger man is much taller. His hair is the same straw yellow that Hans has lost to old age, and their eyes and broad faces are uncannily alike.
Wilhelm dresses simply in shirts and trousers held up by suspenders. He has an old gray jacket that he wears as well.
He walks with a pronounced limp, though it doesn't seem to pain him.
Experience: He worked as an errand boy for his father's mechanic shop before the war, and joined up as soon as he was old enough. He served three years, fighting in the front lines before an injury a few short months before the war ended. He was sick to death of Europe at the time, and when he was capable of travel he started making his way East. He effectively fell off the face of the earth for three years, and when he returned to Europe he went not back home, but to England with his uncle Hans, who had a job for him.

These are actual spoilers. If you want to read them, feel free. But I'm mostly putting them here so that nobody thinks I'm springing things on people out of nowhere. If you want to be surprised by things, do not read them.

This actually sounds very fun. Dereken, I was wondering if you'd be open to your character having a young protégée?

Kind of interested in this, trying to think of what kind of character to play. Immediate thought was Chinese assistant-type but I disregarded that as not likely to work.

Alright, Short Round.

As for me, i'm going for a The MusicMan/Moist von Lipwig confidence trickster and party face. Might be fun.

Short Round is probably an example of why I'm hesitant to use the idea?

But a conman face sounds good. Wonder if I can come up with anything decent.

Since the younger Von Hessen travelled quite a bit in Asia an Asian assistant/companion might not be THAT out of the question although I'll leave that up to the GM and/or discuss details with them if they like the idea.

Or he could just be someone hired to help with carrying, excavating and the like.
