Asyrdar The Ferryman

"We've had word, from across the sea in Cloazamar. We found the Ferryman."

Marcus continued to turn the words over in his head, distracted even with the warm, naked form pressed against his. She was still panting, and he adjusted his arm as she squirmed into a more comfortable position, resting her head on his chest.

"What are you thinking about?" Her question seemed innocent enough, but Marcus knew her better than that. He was silent for a time, and he felt her breathing slow.

"How did you know?"

She smirked, propping herself on an elbow. "Too dutiful. You get this look in your eyes when you're just 'doing your duty'." Her smile faded; she cast her eyes down. "It isnt going to get easier by waiting. Just say it."

"They found him. Your brother."

He felt her stiffen, wanted to reach out to her, but she pulled away. She sat at the edge of the bed, facing away from him. There was a silence, long and painful. Marcus sat up as well, took a moment to listen to the woods surrounding the camp; it would be morning soon, and he still had a long ride to the city. He dressed as she processed what he told her.

"You're going." It wasn't a question.

Marcus' heart tore. He stayed stone-faced as he pulled on his tunic. "Thats what the Princeps wants. Ill have a team - all handpicked by him, of co-"

"You'll bring him back?"

Marcus turned toward her, looked her in the eyes. Emerald eyes. Hesperid eyes. "Lydia, I'm still not sure I wont split the man in half the moment I see him. If he's even alive and this isnt a fool's hunt or an elaborate ruse to get me killed. Just promise me one thing; don't get yourself killed while I'm gone. You are all I've got now."

Well, I hope that piqued some interest. I poke my head into RPG every blue moon or so to test ideas or get some practice writing, and so here I am.

This would essentially be an alternative take on a book I'm already writing, particularly the sequel to the manuscript I'm about to be whoring out to publishers in the coming months. Low fantasy, focused on politics and military action, though this particular story is a bit more of an adventure, and thus would make a much better RP. In terms of technology, think roughly Imperial Rome, leaning toward the 'fall' of Rome.

I've left things vague, but here's the summary: In recent years, when a costly war between two major rival empires is winding down to a stalemate/ceasefire, an ambitious noble named Asyrdar Hesperos uses his family name, political clout, and various tricks and forceful measures to re-ignite the war. Successful militarily, he begins very clearly nation-building and engaging in other activities worrisome to the Senate and the Princeps ('First Citizen', Emperor in all but name), and they join forces with their former enemy to surround Asyrdar's army. He submits to law, rather than force citizens of his beloved Republic to war with one another - and some time before his execution is freed from imprisonment by loyalists, to escape across the sea to a new life.

However, the man has many loyalists, and mere weeks after his initial arrest, the continent tore itself apart. Loyalist cities spring up all around, and others declare independence - a movement that spreads across the two empires, too fast to control or mitigate. On top of this, legal battles involving Asyrdar's family lead his younger sister, Lydia, to take up arms against the State as well.

The story itself would focus around the PC's journey across a foreign land, dealing with whatever springs up as they search for Asyrdar, the so-called 'Ferryman'.

Kick ass. Going to let this stew for another day, I should have the thread up tomorrow or the next day. If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask.

Ive been out of the game for a long time, and I work 45ish hours a week, so bear with me. Things might be a bit slow starting out

Can you describe the basic things about the aesthetics of where we're supposed to come from? Also, the name of said place, of where we're supposed to come from? What are the names of the two Empires? You said that the technology level is equivalent to around the fall of Rome, but does the technology look Roman?

You use vaguely Latin words, so is it safe to say whichever Empire we're serving is vaguely inspired by Rome?

Are we loyalists or are we hunting the Ferryman down to bring him to justice?

I think it'd help me and the others formulate characters if we knew a bit more about the world our characters live in.

Ill address it fully in the OOC thread Im writing up, but here's a bit of a summary:

The two main nations in conflict for so long are Horatica Nova, a republic in name but under the subtle dictatorship of the Princeps, and Teleucia, a large empire governed by Satraps answering to a Great King. Their continent sits in the east, with Teleucia dominating its rival in size and population by twice as much or more. They've been at war on and off for the past four decades, and are currently in a state of ceasefire. However, the bulk of this story will be taking place over the sea to the west, to where Asyrdar has escaped.

Yes, things are vaguely inspired by Rome, but imagine a Rome in which magic is present (though not common by any means, and very often volatile and dangerous). Technology generally sits at late-Roman level, with the most common metals still being iron and bronze, though many facets of life - including the level of technology - have been modified and enhanced by the work of those attending the so-called Academia Imperialis.

The Academia is what it sounds like - a place of study. Everything from engineering, agriculture, military strategy, and sailing is taught at the Academia, and many find it a goal to attend in one capacity or another. There are three main 'collegia' to the Academia: the War College, the Scholastica Civilitas (School of Civil Arts), and the Naval Academy. Each school has made breakthroughs in research and philosophical discourse that put certain aspects of life far beyond that of Rome. This is mainly in the field of civilian infrastructure, but there are military breakthroughs as well IE low-quality steel some several hundred years before IRL history would date it. It is also the place where those with magical affinity are sent - its dangerous nature requires years of formal training, and the State can and does execute those who will not comply.

As for characters, I am lenient so long as the idea works. You could be amongst those with a personal grudge against Asyrdar, you might be an agent from Teleucia sent to save or murder the man (depending on where you come from). The initial mission will certainly be 'hunt him down'. But the outcome will be up in the air; Im leaving this organic, so it can and will stray from the ideas I have for my own book.

I see, thanks. And I forgot sometimes people wait for an OOC to info-dump. Sorry, I get hasty sometimes. Anyways, sounds awesome! Can't wait for an OOC.
