The news of the chemical attack on the United States still left the country in shock. Emotions ran high as many cried for revenge. Anger, frustration, patriotism, sorrow, insanity. There was no holding it back. Those who spoke out against the war quickly joined the ranks of the war mongers as many volunteered into the military. It was a blessing in a nightmare to the right people. An impetus for further devastation.

Hundreds of thousands perished when the first biological agents made contact with the ground. Major cities were infected. Dallas, Los Angeles, Washington D.C, Chicago, and many more. How the Russians made it through US defenses was still being determined. The President was safe. While the nation of diplomacy swayed to total war, terrible rumors had been circulating about the hot zones. Mutations - creatures that should’ve existed only in fiction. While the ‘first hand’ accounts came from frightened civilians and conspiracy theorists, hard proof of these mutations remained to be seen.

Brooke walked amongst the ruined city. Having been with the CIA clandestine services for several years, the job took her many places. Her occupation required stealth, tactfulness, and adaptation. However, at some points, transparent intervention was needed. The agency had taught her well at the farm to adapt to a myriad of situations. Upon the aftermath of the biological strike, Brooke was activated as part of Operation Purge. The CIA’s response to the terror attacks. They were to ascertain anything that helped find a cure and root out any enemy spies under their discretion. It was an honor. She’d killed before in her country’s name, and she would continue to do so to preserve the ideals she loved. Brooke had heard of the creatures the biological agent created. Luckily she had yet to encounter one and hoped it stayed that way. A deeper part of her wished that the things were fictitious, unsure of how’d she respond. Just silly propaganda.

Walking towards a checkpoint, Brooke showed a soldier her identification as he let her pass. Chicago had been rioting for weeks. While the armed forces tried to screen and process as many as they could, the evacuation zone was overwhelmed and understaffed. The civilians weren’t making it any easier. There had been casualties amongst the soldiers and the civilians. Pandemonium was what it was. The soldiers followed their orders while the civilians wanted to flee. Brooke could understand that. She didn’t want to be near this place either. However, she had her orders like the soldiers. If the people would just calm down, order would expedite the screening. She wondered if they knew that with ever incident, the screenings that led to their freedom was interrupted. Desperate times always threw logic to the wind she supposed.

Making her way into a tent, Brooke rested her eyes on several others as she nodded to them. “Have any of you tried the hot zone?” Brooke asked before the meeting even started. She already knew what this was all about. Their search for a cure had turned up empty. The other teams at the other hot zones weren’t having any luck either. It wasn’t because there was nothing to find. The simply haven’t mustered the courage to go into the belly of the beast. Bullets was child play compared to chemical agents. The couldn’t see the germs. “That’s the only place where we haven’t looked.”

“The part of the city that wasn’t hit by the chemical agents turned up nothing,” said David - the group leader - as he activated his tablet and showed the others. “Wilhelmsson’s right. We have to push into the contact area. I’ve requested filters for all of us. Hot agent containment capsules as well. We’ve been cleared for weaponry that the military will provide.”

“We’re actually going in there?” asked another agent - Singer if Brooke recalled correctly. “I ain’t opposed for dying for my country, but biologicals? That’s some scary shit. What the fuck were the Ruskies thinking using those? You think we’ll be sending our own?”

“And become another voodoo bad guy? Fuck, Singer. Use your head,” David said as he enlarged an image. “Get focused. All of you. This is where the biological impacted first. The agency figures that’s where the samples will be the most potent. I’m inclined to agree. However, that’s where the killing agent will be the most saturated. I know y’all heard those rumors. About those beasts. Nothing’s been confirmed. Get your shit straight when we go in. Most likely, we’ll run into civvies and rioters. Both are monsters in their own right.”

The tent filled with nervous laughter. All of them knew what human beings were capable of.

“We’ve all been through worse than this - minus the chemicals. Rioters and civvies will be no problem. We’ve got people fighting overseas. Hell, even the Alaskan front’s taking a beating from the Russians. We do our part and secure the home front. We commence the insertion tomorrow morning. Filter orientation will happen at 2200. Prototypes, but their a hella lot better than our current ones. With germs, I’d rather take the strongest shield. Got it?”

Brooke nodded along with the others. Tomorrow. Butterflies fluttered in her stomach as she thought about the operation. It’s importance couldn’t be understated in the slightest; she had to focus her entirety on it. However, no matter how hard she tried, her thoughts always moved back to the same thing.

Her family. Were her parents okay? Her kid sister? Brooke shook her head as she played out the worst case scenario. She was never the devout, but she prayed that they were alive. All of them.

“Step back!”

Brooke looked in the direction of the voice. She had just finished changing into her field clothes to remain incognito amongst the civilian populace. A soldier was pointing his rifle at a scared mother and child. They were well past the ‘Do Not Cross’ line. Quickly making her way over, she made sure the soldier saw her. Brooke looked at the soldier’s name embroidery on his BDU. “Corporal Charleston? What’s the problem?” Brooke rose her hands as the M4 pointed her way. “Whoa there.”

“No civilians past the line!” ordered the corporal as he stepped back slightly. Marines were converging on them as they trained their rifles. “Step back across or you will be shot! This is not a request.”

“Listen, I’m going to reach into my coat pocket. Just for my credentials, okay? Don’t go happy with that trigger.” Her cover for this station was a special contractor, Bethany Sanders. She was to fake believe that she had experience combating chemicals but really did not. Brooke wagered she had dozens of fake aliases. It was her job to make the transition as seamless as possible. When she found her identification, she slowly walked it to the corporal very aware that a number of muzzles were pointed at her. “Here. Take a look.”

The corporal lowered his rifle as she looked at the identification. He rose and eyebrow. “Department of Chemical Defense?”

“Government sanctioned office in times of chemical warfare. Our supervision falls directly under the joint chiefs.”

“Shit,” said the corporal. “The civilians have us on edge. They test the barriers. All they’re doing is slowing down the doctors. The screening takes a fuck ton of time as it is.”

Brooke resisted the urge to smile. Fuck seemed to be the common word in every Marine’s vocabulary. “I hear you. What? Fifteen minutes per person? That all adds up. You know what else slows down the process? Starting a riot by shooting a mom and her kid,” she said. “Let me have a word with them, okay?”

Turning around, Brooke walked towards the mother trying to look as amiable as possible. “Ma’am? My name is Bethany Sanders with the Department of Chemical Defense. The situation’s pretty hairy, but please step back into the line. This is for your protection as well as everyone’s.”

“You’re herding us like animals,” said the woman as she drew her daughter in close. “Like goddamn animals!”

Brooke shook her head. “Not at all. Once you’ve been cleared of infection, you’re free to go. Look. You’re almost at the testing site. Just wait a bit longer. For you and your daughter’s sake. These men have orders to shoot anyone past this line. They don’t want to. Don’t make them do that. Please, back into the line. You’ll be out soon enough.”

When the mother dragged her child back into the sea of people, Brooke breathed easier as she walked back towards the Marines who now stood at ease. “Crisis averted, corporal.”

The soldier nodded as he stepped back into position. “Wish all cases were that fuckin’ easy,” he said. “Thanks Sanders. Hope you DCD folks clean this shit up. Biological’s in the states? Fuckin’ Russians.”

“We’ll do our best,” Brooke said as she began to walk down the line. Watching all these people reminded her why she had to succeed. Though she hated the stupidity of mobs, fear was something none of them had to face head on before. For the majority anyway. About to head back to the ‘Authorized Personal Only’ portion of the compound, someone caught her eye. She knew that face anywhere. “Shit.”

It was her kid sister. This had to be handled delicately. Bethany Sanders had no siblings, and those not within her circle could know her identity.

Sighing, she walked towards the woman as she looked around. “Ms. Wilhelmsson?” she asked. God, her sister looked all grown up. It’d been too long since she’d seen her. “Your sister sends her regards. I work with her within the DCD. If you’ll follow me?"

She floundered. Every step felt an eternity. Every step was heavy. The heels of her boots scraped against the stone cold asphalt. The light drizzle had malignly turned into a beating downpour, each drop of water resonating loudly against stuff of metal and plastic. She was freezing, but her mind was numb. The surroundings were dark, but she could no longer recall the time of day; was it early morning or late night? Commotion and ruckus spurred all around and occasionally penetrated her senses to disturb their trance. She had lost count of how many hours or days that had trapped her in this state. It was a blur of passing lights and awful sounds—a nightmare to some, a dream to others.

Olivia Wilhelmsson was her name. To the fleeting eye she was a seemingly unknown but attractive composition, displaying uncanny symmetrical features. In a now past life, however, customers relished her excellent service and blazing speed. The routines of those fading memories were unremoved from bodily actions and reflex. As such, the fortunate few who had crossed paths with Olivia thought her a nurse. For she brought water when they thirsted, searched for food when they hungered, and offered them the warmth of her presence when they chilled. She never answered when they inquired, nor did she accept when they invited. Olivia’s destiny was only her own to give.

People were afraid, and rightfully so. Rumors of Hellish creatures, lurking in the dark, spread throughout the masses akin to wildfire. The whispers of fear were close to her ear. Children anxiously looked to their elders and teddy bears for sanctuary. The words of attempted comfort echoed loudly in the crowds, some being stronger than others. Olivia frowned at how certain parents seemingly ignored their weeping young. Pitiful, she thought. But blast and judge the actions of others and the universe will put you to the test yourself. A boy of perhaps six or seven years of age suddenly bumped into Olivia’s side. Their eyes met in silence, as the mass of people droned towards treatment.

“Hello there,” said Olivia.

The boy stared at the girl twice his height in silence. The brunette woman glanced at those close to her, but no signs of next of kin were apparent.

“What’s your name?” she inquired.
“Adam,” said the boy and tightly embraced his stuffed toy, which appeared to be a koala bear.

“It’s nice to meet you, Adam. I’m Olivia,” she said and squatted before him. “That’s a nice teddy bear you’ve got there.”

The boy remained silent, glancing at his stuffed toy, and then back at the woman. Olivia felt sorrow within her heart as she noticed the boy’s shivering and seemingly malnourished features.

“Are you here all by yourself? Where are your parents, Adam?” Olivia inquired.
“No, I don’t know,” Adam responded, confusing as it were.
“You’re not here by yourself, but you’ve lost your parents; is that it?”
“Yes.”
“Well, then we have to find them, don’t we?” said Olivia and offered her hand along with a blinding smile.

The boy firmly embraced the brunette’s hand and gazed towards the back of the masses. Olivia’s worst fears were thus realized; if she wanted to help this hapless young man, she would have to leave her time invested position in the queue. The thought of taking the boy with her began to infest. However, at the other end of that thought, a pair of parents in despair lingered. Olivia shouldered her backpack and squeezed the boy’s hand.

“Okay then, let’s find them,” she said.

Olivia was showered with gratitude twenty minutes later. The family was reunited and all was well. The mother and father insisted on providing Olivia with whatever supplies that they could spare, but she declined. There was no need to praise or reward that which came naturally. The parents expressed their guilty feelings for forcing Olivia to leave her position in the queue, but the brunette reassured them that they needed not to think of it any further. The world had become such a dark place, and so rapidly, that a little bit of light was always appreciated no matter what the cost. Adam’s parents insisted that Olivia stayed with them for the duration of the screening. She could do nothing but accept their kind offer.

A surge of doubt crawled into Olivia’s heart and mind when a seemingly familiar woman approached and called her by name. The stranger appeared official, considering the outfit and respirator. The latter clouded the woman’s face enough for Olivia to feel at a disadvantage, but deep down inside the familiarity was prevalent. Everything about the resolute woman synched with Olivia’s memories of her sister. However, it was dark and she was tired, edgy on her feet and defensive around her newly found friends. The brunette subtly guided the family behind her own presence, a protective sign.

Olivia considered the woman’s proposal, unable to determine whether or not it was a humble request or an oppressive order. However, there was little to lose at this point and her gut screamed and pleaded her to venture further. Olivia turned to the family and thanked them for their hospitality. She then squatted before Adam and gave him a kiss on his cheek.

“Don’t you run off anymore now, okay?—stay with your Mom and Dad,” she spoke.

Olivia straightened her posture and faced the looming authority. “Is my sister here?”

Brooke waited in silence. For the longest moment, she was afraid Olivia would simply disregard her 'order' and tell her to shove off. Honestly, the woman had no plan on how to react. All she knew was that she had to get Olivia out of here. It was breaking protocol, but when Brooke ventured into the city as her orders dictated, she wanted to go in with the knowledge of her little sister being far from the contaminated zone. The riots hadn't reached the barricades yet, but experience told her desperate people resorted to desperate measures. She'd been on the receiving end far too many times. Even instigated some herself to complete her objective. The things she did to preserve her country's freedom. It'd make the common man swoon.

Watching the family Olivia stood protectively in front of, Brooke wished there was something she could do for them. However, trying to get her sister out of line and expedited out of the city was already breaking so many regulations she could hardly keep them straight. The families that had gathered were simply unfortunate. No doubt some of them had better jobs than her, Brooke was in a position to do something here. For once, it wasn't wealth that was going to save these people but connections. In a better situation, she would've simply laughed at the middle-upper to upper class. Now? She felt sorry for them. They lost everything after all. Their lives, their homes.

When the goodbyes were exchanged, Brooke reached over and grabbed her sister by the arm firmly as she led her away. "Your sister is here. The matter she's attending to is classified," Brooke said. It was odd to talk about herself in the third person. It'd have to do until they were safely out of sight. "We issued an early extraction for families of the DCD. Did a vehicle not come for you? When the germs hit, you should've been track down and taken far from here."

Nodding to a soldier, Brooke ignored his perplexed look as he resumed his patrol. The woman had already weaved together an alibi should they be stopped. Olivia was a person of interest that her superiors wanted to talk to. It was a very unstructured lie, but did the soldiers know any better? Her circle hardly told them a thing as they operated. As long as she flashed her badge, they let her be. If they gave her trouble, she reminded them who she reported to.

Opening a tent at the edge of the compound, Brooke looked around. It was empty - thank goodness. Leading the way towards a desk, she sat Olivia down as she quickly disabled the respirator. Taking a deep breath of fresh air, she looked on her sister with a mixture of emotions. Things had ended badly for them last time she spoke. They had a falling out, and that was that. Now? Brooke hardly cared about all the drama, the jealously, the arguments. She couldn't get through to her parents, and just having her kid sister alive was enough for her.

"Liv," Brooke said as she sat across from her sister. A smile tugged her lips up as she took the younger Wilhelmsson in. "I thought they came for you. The cars. They told me they'd get you out of here. When you weren't at the drop off, I was worried. Have you heard from mom or dad? I couldn't get through. Were they with you?"

Brooke chuckled ever so slightly as she sat back. She checked the time. She had to leave soon. Such terrible timing this reunion was. "I can't stay for long," she said as she reached over and grabbed Olivia's hand that rested on the table. She gave it a gentle squeeze. "I need you to get as far away from here as you can. I'm sorry I haven't called or anything. I hope you're still not angry at me? Even if you are, it was good to see you again. Your big sister's on the job. I'll fix things up and come find you. I promise."

The iron fist wrapped around Olivia’s fragile limb relived a good portion of her doubt. Jumping to conclusions was not her game, but she had been handled like a ragdoll before, and throughout her childhood. The senior sister was the stronger of the two. She was the faster of the two, the better of the two. Contemplating that fact, Olivia determined her sister to be sour milk—not spoiled milk but sour milk, specifically. It was an acquired taste. Olivia had sometimes served it with various brands of cereal to foreign guests at the restaurant where she used to work. She once ate a moderately sized bowl of it herself. No words could describe how disgusting it was. One of the guests, an elderly Scandinavian gentleman, explained that it was very much a cultural food. There was little to no chance of enjoying it if you did not grow up with it. Brooklyn was Olivia’s sour milk. As an outsider, Olivia hated her; as her sister, Olivia loved her.

“Hey! Take it easy,” the brunette grunted. Luckily, she had been able to secure her backpack before being man-handled away from the droning masses. However, her steps were nonetheless reluctant; no longer heavy or floundering but light and resistant. “Classified? Don’t give me that shit. Just take me to my sister or I’ll just go back to the cattle pen,” said Olivia with strong tones of sarcasm and contempt.

Transitioning into the tent away from the rain was much appreciated. There was no presence of warmth to be found, but the lack of icy drops falling from the sky was good enough. Olivia attempted to make sense of the mess that was her hair, slobbering all over her face, while the authority lady made herself busy by removing the respirator. The brunette’s eyes were fixed on herself, thus she did not notice who the woman was at first.

“Look, lady, I don’t know what this is about, nor do I care, but you better take me to my sister before she finds out about this, because she is going to kick your…-”

Olivia was interrupted by a, to her, well known nickname. The instant she gazed upon the woman, it felt as if Bruce Lee himself had resurrected and punched Olivia in the chest; as if the Witchdoctor from Indiana Jones ripped her heart out; as if hitting a tree with her car at maximum speed; all the while falling from an airplane without a parachute. Olivia’s eyes welled up and she threw herself at her sister, embracing Brooke with all the strength that could be mustered. The brunette gasped, puffs of air emanating from her presence, unable to speak properly. However, the scent of sour milk crept ever so closer.

“They did come, but I was helping Amber when the chaos broke out. You remember Amber, right?—my coworker. Anyway, we got held up at her place, and then we were separated at the train station,” Olivia whimpered, trying to dry her eyes. She exhaled deeply. “I don’t know what happened… I tried to call mom and dad, but all services were down.”

Olivia’s brief moment of relief was drowned with despair once again when her sister retorted. The brunette withdrew her hand from Brooke’s embrace. Olivia’s gaze turned contemptuous once again; that disgusting taste of sour milk rapidly filling her mouth.

“What? You’re going to leave me here?” She exclaimed and violently stood up from her seating. “It never stops, does it?! Even when the world has gone to shit, you leave me behind while you go off to play with the big kids! How fucking dare you?! You’re not leaving me behind this time, Brooke, because if you do, you’ll never see me again. That’s a promise.”

The hug was unexpected. Brooke resisted the urge to throw her kid sister against the floor and incapacitate her. All that stopped her instincts from kicking in was the fact that Olivia was no danger to her. Brooke wrapped her arms around the woman just as tightly as she remained silent. However, deep within, she was just as happy. Whenever did she miss the touch of her sister so? The choking grip made it hard to breathe, but Brooke didn't mind. She hadn't seen her baby sister in years. She'd just enjoy the moment. It may be her last.

Listening to Olivia talk, Brooke rubbed her back gently. "You should've just went straight to the pick up point, Liv. Amber's smart she can take care of yourself," Brooke said as she sighed. She knew the services were down, but she had to ask. "We'll find them. You think germs could kill dad? He's far too stubborn. Mom too."

As with all of their meetings, this one was no different. Brooke frowned as she clasped her hands together. From her parent's praises to always leaving Olivia alone, the older sister could hardly blame her. If Brooke was in her position, she'd probably react the same. The sister that was never home, never there to talk to her, never there to share in her pains when she needed someone. That's what this life had cost the older Wilhelmsson. Even so, she hadn't regretted a moment. From stopping dozens of threats against the states to bringing stability back to unstable regions, those were proud accolades to be had. However, she needed her family too.

"Olivia Wilhelmsson. Stop being such a child and sit down," Brooke said as she stared at her sister. Though she was glad to see her kid sister, Olivia could be such a child. Such a spoiled, rotten child. "I'm not leaving you because I want to. I have a job to do. I need you out of the city and safe."

Getting to her feet, Brooke crossed the table as she placed her hands on Olivia's shoulders. "I'm doing this to protect you. All of us," she said. "I'm going to go find you an ID. You'll have to fake your identity for but a moment. Walk out of the base and get as far away from here as you can. My ... christ, Liv. My team and I are about to go to the hot zone. We need to find the source of the chemical to manufacture a cure. Don't you dare tell you a soul. I'm telling you because I trust you. I trust you, sis. Now, don't make this any harder on me. Our home was attacked. Someone's gotta pay. Now. Stay here. I'll be right back. Don't leave this tent, understand?"

With that, Brooke put her respirator back on and walked out. She needed to get Olivia out of here quickly.

Security was obviously not a priority as Brooke found an ID laying around outside of a decontamination tent. The person didn't look like Olivia, but as long as her sister moved fast, the soldiers had other things to worry about other than identity identification. In fact, things seemed to be growing more tense by the moment. Brooke hadn't been monitoring the radio chatter, but the number of soldiers had increased. Their body language told her something was amiss as well. Feeling her heart beat slightly faster, she hurried on back to the tent.

That was when she heard the gunshots.

Screams filled the air like the choir of the devil. The sound of rifle fire was were the drums while the people were the strings. There was another sound. Wails and guttural growls that Brooke had never heard before in her life. Her body shivered as she looked in the direction of the sounds. Then she saw it.

Her mouth dropped open when she saw the creature moaned sounding uncannily like the large cargo ships pulling into the harbor. When she saw the creature pick up a woman and thrust its hands through her chest, Brooke felt her legs began to shake. The creature began to ooze a liquid over its victim as the woman wailed. Her skin began to corrode as the creature began to suck on the woman, as if it were drinking her.

It was when the creature discarded the corpse to the side did Brooke finally regain control over her senses and ran. She heard the intercom system calling for total lockdown. She knew what that meant. Code Black. Contain the scene no matter the method.

Running as quickly as she could, Brooke nearly yelped as another one of those things appeared around the side. It looked at her as it groaned again, as if it were in agony. What the hell were these things?

Scampering the other way, Brooke tripped as a half melted soldier switched on the ground. She couldn't tell the difference between organs, blood, and the liquid. It all was the same crimson-brown mush. Grabbing the soldiers rifle and sidearm, she took whatever magazines she could find before taking off again.

Making sure to lose the monster before heading back to the tent she left Olivia, the brunette prayed that her kid sister listened to her.

Bursting through the tent, she had her rifle pointed inwards. She lowered it when she saw Olivia. "We're leaving," Brooke said between breaths. She handed Olivia the pistol after checking it. "Safeties off. Just point and pull the trigger. Only if you have to. The corpse I took it off of had two clips. Here. We don't stop for anyone. We come across a dead soldier, we take their magazines and water. You hand them to me; I'll put them in my bag. Rations too."

Taking a deep breath, Brooke gripped Olivia's shoulder. "Just follow me, okay? We're leaving. Together. No matter what you hear, just keep your eyes on me, okay?"

The standard procedure was for Olivia to go batshit crazy from Brooke’s undermining choice of words and tone. Their mother had resorted to calling the younger sibling a ‘child’ before. She and Brooke had teamed up at the dinner table on more than one occasion. However, it was not entirely to a fault. Olivia tends to blow things out of proportion, be vocal about her inner feelings, and has no shame when it comes to informing people of what they are doing wrong according to her. Of course, the brunette means no harm even if she can be quite clumsy in her vocabulary.

Olivia simply did not understand her sister’s argument. In a world that was rapidly going to hell in a handbasket, Brooke wanted her sister to venture off on her own. The younger sibling’s eyes were wide open at this point, staring coldly into her sister’s eyes; her mouth was ajar and her mind could not fathom what she had just heard. Olivia finally surrendered and sat down, emitting an audible grunt in protest.

“Wouldn’t I be safer with you, big government hero?” the girl interrupted her sister, who simply retorted with the stare—as in ‘shut up and let me finish’. But, when that moment arrived and Brooke asked if her sister understood what she had said, Olivia simply sat in silence and refused to exchange eye contact. Obviously, she would do as Brooke instructed, but she was not particularly happy about it at the time.

Only a couple of minutes passed before Olivia could hear gunshots and screaming from outside the tent. She flinched and stood upon her feet in an instant. This was the first time she had heard gunshots up close. It was quite a different experience from hearing them during July 4th celebrations or on the news; the contrasting context was what frightened her the most—were the soldiers shooting people? Olivia’s breath intensified. She grabbed her backpack and tightly strapped it in, ready to flee at a moment’s notice.

Olivia slowly approached the flaps that comprised the tent's 'doorway'. Drenched in the sound of gunfire and screaming, she could hear other strange sounds that were unfamiliar—perhaps they were some sort of malfunctioning machinery or maybe the power had finally failed. However, just as Olivia was about to remove the flaps, her sister burst into the tent with an automatic rifle spearheading her entry. Olivia flinched once again and stood back to allow her sister space.

“What’s going on out there?” It was the only thing Olivia could think of. The younger sister was thoroughly confused and the fear within her amassed at a steady pace. “I don’t know how to use a gun,” said Olivia in an attempt to highlight the pointlessness in giving her one. “What? Dead? Brooke, what’s going on out there?!” Olivia finally grabbed ahold of her sister, who was acting fast and allowing her training to do everything for her.

Taking a deep breath, Olivia carefully heeded what her sister said. Something terrible was going on outside, that much the younger brunette could figure out at this point. Brooke had broken the threshold of craziness that Olivia could deal with. She was no longer messing around or trying to undermine her younger half. This was serious, and Olivia managed to acknowledge it by gesturing a nod at the instructions given to her.

Olivia was as ready as she ever would be, gun in hand.

Brooke wanted to explain, but there simply wasn't any time. With the shoots from outside growing ever nearer - and intense - who knew when those things would find them. There was no way Brooke was going to let Olivia undergo the same fate as the woman she saw on her way here. It was horrible. The melting of the flesh was terrible to witness, but to be slurped up like a drink? that tore at Brooke the most. No, they had to get out of here and get out quickly.

"Remember, just focus on me. We can't stop for anything except supplies if it's safe. Do you understand me, Liv?" Brooke said. She looked pointedly at her sister. She knew Olivia didn't want to listen to her and wanted to argue, but now wasn't the time. When they were safe, she'd take anything her younger sister could dish out. Brooke gestured to the gun. "Point and pull the trigger. It'll have a quick but not too much. Only shoot if you have to, alright? Lets go."

Leading the way out, Brooke cleared the area in front of the tent as a foul odor assaulted her sense of smell. It smelled like tar and burnt flesh merged into one. Olivia never smelt burnt flesh before, but if bet her savings that it'd smell like the odor she smelled now. A great heat from a nearby fire made the cool Winter night feel like wonderful Spring day. The brunette would've danced in glee if the weather was truly like this. However, death fed it. She couldn't be happy about that.

Moving towards the right, Brooke checked to make sure her sister was behind her as she kept moving. Bodies were everywhere - or what had resembled them in the past. If the Russians knew about this side effect, they were going to pay. Biological agents were a terrible thing to use from the get go. Biological agents that transformed people into these beasts? That was unforgivable.

"Stop!" Brooke halted just in time as bullets peppered the spot where stood just moments before. Spinning on her heels, she pushed Olivia towards some crates as she followed closely behind. "Weapons! Drop them! Drop those fucking weapons!"

"DCD! Cease fire goddammit!" Brooke was about to peak from around her cover before she felt bullets whiz by. It was then Brooke realized what was happening. The soldiers were exterminating the civilians. Protocol Black. In times of biological terror, when destabilizing elements were present, the military were to take all measures necessary to ensure the region stabilized. Looking over at Olivia, Brooke made sure a bullet was chambered in her rifle. "Liv? I'm about to do something terrible. Don't you watch, okay? Stay hidden and watch our back. Olivia! I'm trusting you, you hear? I'm trusting you!"

Taking a deep breath, Brooke focused as she peeked around the side rather than the top. Getting and ankle, she aimed her rifle and slowly squeezed off a few round. The stock kicked back against her shoulder as she fired short, controlled bursts. She saw the soldier slump to his feet as the others began to shower a hailstorm of bullets her way. Cursing, she moved back behind the crate as she quickly reloaded. Set for another round, she peeked around the crates again as she quickly aimed and fired.

It took three clips to take out the Marines. She felt sick to her stomach. Killing her own side was not pleasant at all. She worked with the Marines - even made some friends. She hoped they were still alive and kicking. "Come on," Brooke said as she grabbed Olivia and willed her tired legs to keep moving. Stopping briefly, Brooke looted the soldiers bodies taking more clips for both her rifle and Olivia's pistol. She took a several combat knives and stole away some MREs. She took the water as well. She whispered, "nice."

The perimeter fence was in eye sight now. Brooke felt a sense of elation as the two sisters began to move again. Clear moments ago, Brooke looked in horror as the things started to come from the sides. She heard the agonizing moans, as if the people they were before were locked in an endless cycle of torture. Thinking on her feet, Brooke spotted a truck as she pulled Olivia towards it. She checked the cabin as she swore out loud. A dozen of those things were getting closer, but there was no way they'd slip past them on foot. There was simply too many. Then she heard a terrible roar pierce the sky as the ground rumbled. Brooke looked towards the sound; she almost fainted.

"O-Olivia," Brooke said as she took out spare pistol clips and gave it to her sister. "That thing hasn't seen us yet. We need to get the truck moving. Cover me. I'm going to hotwire the truck. If you can't hold, tell me, okay?"

Brooke didn't have time to reassure her sister any longer. The small monsters were coming ever closer while she wanted to be far away when that large one saw them. Sliding underneath the truck, she took out a metal panel underneath as she started to play with the wires. Her hands shook so much that the normally easy task for her turned into a mishmash of hell.

Calm down, girl. Get this done and get home. Get this done and get your sister out of here.
