Standing at a mere 5’9”, and weighing in at around 140 pounds, it’s safe to say that Jesse isn’t exactly the most imposing of figures. It doesn’t help that he never stands up straight, either. His posture is terrible; shoulders rolled forward, knees bent, hands inside his pockets. No matter how many hours of sleep he gets a night, it’s always fitful, as evident by the dark circles under his watery, blue eyes. There is an unhealthy pallor to his skin, marred with fading bruises and abrasions. This, combined with his mop of dirty blonde hair, gives him an overall appearance that can best be described as “washed out”. Unless he is comfortable in his surroundings, he is unsmiling, a seemingly permanent scowl darkening his features.

Jesse has chronically chapped lips, and the bridge of his nose is no longer quite straight, having been broken one too many times. His face is dusted with a light smattering of freckles, though they’re only visible upon closer inspection. It’s not something he’s self-conscious about, but his voice is a different story altogether. Most of the time, he tries speaks in a bored, tuneless monotone. Jesse doesn’t like raising his voice, even when he’s agitated, because he hates how he always sounds like he’s on the verge of tears, only worsening with anxiety. After all, it’s kind of hard for people to take you seriously when you sound like you’re about to start crying.

Jesse couldn’t care less about fashion, and he often looks like he just threw on whatever was clean. Most of his clothes hail from the neighbourhood thrift store - a lot of t-shirts, hoodies, sweaters, and washed-out jeans. They don’t fit that well, but he’s comfortable in them. He likes things a little baggy. As for his shoes, Jesse’s been wearing the same pair of Chucks for three years straight. He’s pretty sure they used to be black, but they’ve since faded into an ugly, mottled grey.

Jesse has more scars than he can count, though they’re mostly rather superficial; all scabbed-over cuts and purpling bruises from getting into one too many schoolyard scraps. There is, however, a particularly obvious one on his right forearm, about two or three inches long. If anyone asks, fuck off or a shoddy lie about a fifth grade biking accident are the only answers he’ll give. In truth, it was a souvenir from his mother’s ex-boyfriend, when he’d gotten his arm broken for talking back.

A recluse by nature, Jesse does not often associate with his peers. At social events, he is withdrawn and quiet, preferring to hover on the fringes of conversation without actually partaking. When he does decide to speak up, however, “abrasive” is really the only word that can be used to describe him. Inwardly self-destructive and outwardly misanthropic, people often find themselves put off by his hostility. He doesn’t abide by the rules, he doesn’t play fairly, and he certainly doesn’t let anyone think they can get one up on him. Jesse likes to pretend he’s hot shit, but when faced with truly confident or successful people, he can become flustered and defensive, lashing out with increasingly nonsensical insults.

If he likes something, chances are he’ll let you know it, and if he doesn’t - well, he’s never been shy about voicing his opinion in that matter as well. Try as he might, he’s never really had the best poker face in the world, and it tends to give him away more than not. Jesse is hard to like, much less to love, but underneath the layers of barbed distrust and anger, lies a deeply frustrated young man. That being said, one of Jesse’s defining traits is his volatility, and suffice to say, he has a terrible habit of mouthing off and getting his ass kicked.

It’s easy to peg him for a textbook case of Small Dog Syndrome, since he’s the kind of guy who’d rather start throwing punches than hash things out; and in most cases, this trope proves to be true. Still, he isn’t purposefully malicious, he just doesn’t like feeling vulnerable. Caustic sarcasm is Jesse’s go-to way of deflecting attention from his innermost angst, the majority of it stemming from his abandonment issues. And while it might be hard to believe, he does, however, have a soft side; it’s just buried under layers and layers of sardonicism. If you do manage to find a friend in Jesse, however, rest assured he’ll go to the ends of the Earth for you, and he’ll always having your back, even when you’re in the wrong.

When prompted to describe Jesse Callaghan, it’s hard for most people to find the right response. It’s just strange how one can be such a mystery, yet such an open book. But Jesse knows that you choose the flaws you wear, whilst disguising the rest of them.

Jesse and his mother only came to Verona five years ago, moving from Kalispell, Montana. Childhood wasn’t quite as picturesque for Jesse as most others’. With a drunkard for a father and a mother who somehow managed to balance two jobs, he didn’t exactly grow up surrounded by sunshine and rainbows. But still, that was something he genuinely wanted - a loving, close-knit family, just like those disgustingly American Norman Rockwell paintings. His father’s idea of a bond with his son, however, was keeping women he brought home a secret from his mother, while she thought quality time with Jesse was handing him a list of household chores to do as she spent her nights bussing tables at the local diner. Jesse, for the most part, was left to his own devices.

Jesse has always been a wallflower, ever since he was a child. While his classmates ran around the playground, he’d always sit aside and just watch. That was something Jesse did a lot - watch. People, animals, even the clouds inching across the sky; as long as it moved, his eyes were focused on it. They would follow every movement, every sound, until he eventually got bored. His parents never found it strange - not like they even really noticed, anyway. Both of them were far too preoccupied with their respective endeavours to pay any heed to what their son was becoming.

It wasn’t long before his father left, running off to the East Coast with a rouged-up tart on his arm. Gillian was heartbroken, despite her husband’s numerous betrayals, though it was all she could do to put up a tough exterior for Jesse. For a few years, they got by. Jesse had to grow up fast, but he never blamed his mother for never being home. Gillian Callaghan was a real good parent, if you could look past the fact that she wasn’t much of a parent at all.

Jesse felt like Gillian was enough, and he knew that was all that mattered. She was his mother, and she worked her ass over to keep a roof over their heads, and most days, he tried to convince himself that having no father was better than having a drunk, deadbeat loser that slummed around the house all day. There were people all over the world who had a hell of a lot less Jesse knew he had to count his blessings each night and say a quick prayer to whoever it was that listened, if anybody at all.

By the time he’d gone and turned eleven, Gillian found the courage to move on. Tom was a mechanic at the local auto shop, and even then, Jesse knew he was bad news. His mother, however, seemed smitten. He appeared to be a nice guy, but only within earshot. Behind her back, it was a different story altogether. She only realised something was amiss when one day, she returned home to find Jesse with a broken arm. It was clear who the culprit was, and while Gillian kept silent about the incident for fear of losing Jesse to Child Protective Services, she did her best to protect him, eventually moving to Verona in an attempt to cut Tom out of their lives.

Since then, their lives have been quiet. Gillian still juggles two jobs, and Jesse is still a lone wolf with anger issues, except now, he works part-time as a cashier at Walmart. It’s not the best of situations, but Jesse can’t complain.

He has, after all, been through worse.

Gillian Daphne Callaghan (Mother, 44) - Gillian is a single mother, having raised Jesse on her own since he was eight years old. These days, she works the graveyard shift at the Salem Diner, and is also a receptionist at the local clinic.

Illusion Manipulation

The ability to manipulate how other people perceive reality.

Jesse is able to cast illusions, causing people to see, hear, feel, smell, and/or taste things that do not actually exist. He can also cause people to sense things in ways that they would not naturally; for example, he can make himself look and sound like a different person. For this to work, the targets have to be within a certain radius - about ten to fifteen meters, in this case.

Jesse has to concentrate fully to create a convincing illusion, and even then, an exceptionally observant person might be able to see through the smoke and mirrors. A few common mistakes he makes are misplacing a feature on a person, or creating shadows that face the wrong direction. Those who possess telepathy are nearly, if not completely, immune to this power.

Lucy is known for her angelic face in her family. With refined cheekbones, that appear prominently when her small, elegant smile widens her face and her perfectly white, straight teeth that stand starkly against her soft, pink lips. Her brown eyes have a droop to them, but glitter in the sun and shine with her emotions. Her chin is wide and has a small dip in the middle, though it isn’t severe. Lucy’s long, silken tresses are a chocolate brown with a slight red tint to them – there are speculations amongst friends that the red is dye, but she has yet to comment on it – and has a natural fullness to it. Milky skin feels soft to the touch, though her fingers are calloused as well as her feet. Lucy is of average height, which is surprising to the typical stereotypers, and stands at 5’6”. Lucy prefers to wear jeans, button-ups, or sweaters – cardigans or otherwise – paired with her favorite beat-up cat-decorated vans. She doesn’t typically fuss over her appearance, except with a slight amount of lip palm and the occasional mascara. Her hair is her pride and joy when it comes to her body and she is careful to keep it healthy and luscious. Those that are close to her report that she possesses a tangy tangerine and vanilla scent because of her body wash and cheap store-bought perfume.

Lucy only has her ears pierced, but she surprisingly has a wish for a small tattoo on her arm when she turns eighteen. Lucy does have a scar on her knee from a vacuum cleaner incident (she doesn't want to talk about it).

The overachieving Asian – an annoying stereotype that was pushed immediately upon Lucy when she arrived to America. Several times she has been accused of having overbearing parents and stress-related problems. It has never occurred to people, however, that Lucy studies and works hard of her own accord. Ever since she was little, Lucy had been ambitious – she strived for perfection and would only accept the best. Upon the ripe age of twelve, Lucy began to work in her grandmother’s restaurant in order to make money to pay for books. When she wasn’t working, she was studying hard. Lucy had dreams of going places – she didn’t want to live her life stuck behind a desk, making minimum – or even medium – wage. No, Lucy wanted to build an empire; she wanted to leave a mark on the world. While some may see her ambition as admirable, Lucy was the type that would never let anything get in the way of her dream and would go to extremes if she had to in order to stop it.

Working as hard as she does, it is no surprise that Lucy is smart – genius, almost. Lucy has never received anything lower than an A in her life – though she almost came close to a B. Her mind tends to work a mile a minute, so it’s never really surprising when she becomes scatter-brained or forgets something or another because she’s too busy thinking of homework and her studies. Because of her love for intellect, Lucy prefers sardonic, cynical humor and sarcasm and enjoys satirical movies and TV shows (and the rare straight-up parody). Downside to her intelligence: Lucy can be manipulative when she wants to be. She never typically finds a reason to be, but she will do what she has to sometimes. Lucy is sly and sneaky when she wants to be and isn’t particularly honest all the time – though she prefers telling half-truths rather than fullblown lies.

However, Lucy is not as rigid as many would like to think of her. In reality, Lucy is rather idiosyncratic in her passionate personality and opinionated behavior. It is not rare to see Lucy yelling to herself in public, or for her to be grumbling something under her breath. She gets really passionate about things that she cares about and her friends typically like to provoke her ire just to see her yell facts off the top of her lungs. Above all, Lucy hates being wrong and will argue till she’s dead that she’s right – even if she knows she isn’t just because she doesn’t like feeling stupid compared to others.

Though when with her friends, Lucy tends to be rather open and loud, she’s quite shy around strangers and prefers to keep quiet rather than participate. She usually keeps a cold composure when shy, though she might hide behind her hair every now and then, and speaks formally and politely. This coldness tends to turn other people off and create preconceived notions about her such as her being a “frigid bitch” though Lucy doesn’t take it to heart often.

Lucy never really knew her father – he supposedly died before she was born, her mom says a bungee jumping incident but her grandmother maintains that it was a robbery. Neither can really be trusted. Either way, it was sad and all, but her mother and grandma moved on eventually and now only remember fond memories. Of course, there are a couple of times growing up that Lucy walked in on Grandma crying, but those were usually when she was drunk.

Lucy was born in Busan, South Korea a minute after her brother, Levi. There’s not much to say about her early childhood, Lucy spent it studying and reading. Though around the age of seven, Lucy gained a fascination for watching Grandma cook dinner and took it upon herself to start studying cook books (she still almost burned down the kitchen, but there was progress). When she was ten, the family relocated to Seoul, South Korea so Grandma could open a restaurant. Lucy didn’t particularly like it in Seoul – because she had a thick Satoori accent, she was often the butt of the joke of the children and so she worked really hard on adopting a Seoul accent. Lucy didn’t make many friends, except for three, because she spent most of her time alone. At the age of twelve, Lucy convinced Grandma to let her work at the restaurant and worked there most days and nights.

During her childhood, Lucy was very insecure about herself in Seoul and felt like she didn’t belong. However, whenever she became a teenager, she grew into herself and became a lot more confident in herself. Perhaps it was her newfound confidence, or maybe her newfound boobs, but Lucy was often bothered by a boy, named Duri, in her class who had a crush on her. She didn’t particularly like him like that and often was rather annoyed with him. Then, one day, she was trying to study in the park when he brought her milk and Lucy got annoyed at the distraction so she decked him in the face. They’ve been best friends ever since – and his crush on her eventually faded. Afterwards, if any other boys bothered her, Duri beat them up for her.

A little bit after Lucy’s sixteenth birthday, her brother (then identifying as her sister) spontaneously cut off all his hair during the night and told their mother that he no longer wanted to be known as Sang-sook. Their mother reacted badly at first, grounding Levi and not letting him leave the house except for school. Lucy didn’t really understand Levi’s new transgendered identity, but accepted it either way, and it was only with her help that their mother finally allowed Levi to dress as a boy (though she still holds that it’s only a phase). Shortly afterwards, their mother met a tourist named Richard while getting drunk off of wine at a hotel. After a week of knowing each other, they legally got married.

The Kim family didn’t leave Korea right away. They waited until August before they moved to America to live with Richard. Lucy and Levi at first did not like Richard, but they have since learned to reluctantly accept him – Lucy gets along with him better than Levi does.

The Kim family has just recently moved to Verona following Lucy and Levi's mother's marriage to a tourist. The family is rather private and so not much is known about them. However, their new step-father is known throughout the town as a lawyer and a native as his family has lived there forever. They live in a relatively nice suburban house with plenty of room for them.

Possession

The ability to transfer mind and spirit to the body of another being.

With possession, Lucy has the ability to control the body of those she possesses and therefore is able to sleuth.

Lucy does not have access to previous memories or thoughts and cannot mimic their personality unless she has known them prior. When possessing someone, her body falls into a comatose state and is left vulnerable.
