“People sometimes say to me, ‘Pepper, you’re a multiversal traveler. You could pretty much do whatever you want. So, with the power you have, why just run a bar?’ Seems like a waste, right? I could learn all the knowledge in all the universes and use it to get all the power I want. Well, I don’t care about power. I care about people. In the Rabbit Hole, I meet all kinds of people, hear their stories. And what stories they are. So, before you tell me your story, I’ll ask you one thing."

Pepper yawned. It had been a slow day so far. She had wiped down the bar so many times that it must have been completely sterile, and the glasses were so shiny that they could blind a pilot and cause a catastrophic plane crash.

She took a sip of her Green Russian (as the owner, she was perfectly fine with taking some of the alcohol for herself) and leaned back, out of things to do besides wait for a customer.

William walks in and looks around seeing the bartender having a drink. He smiles and sits at a bar stool near her and asks, "Can I have an ale?"

Pepper's posture straightened with excitement as a customer came in and asked for an ale. She put down her drink and poured his.

"Here you go, my good man. So, you're a new face. What brings you here?"

"I'm looking for someone." He picked up his ale and drank deeply. Wiping the foam off of his mouth he looked at the mug and smiled. "That is the best ale I've had in a long time. Thank you."

She picked up her drink again and took a swig.

She finished off her Green Russian and set her glass down, reminding herself to clean it later.

"I've had this place for something like three years? Yeah, had to be that long. Hard to run a bar when you can't drink."

She said the last part more to herself.

William chuckled. "You look like you are handling that part just fine." He watched as some small groups came in and sat at some of the tables. "Looks like you have some tables. May I have another?"

She poured another ale.

"Enjoy," she said with a smile.

Pepper took orders from the people at the tables, glad to be active. Mixing drinks was like a strange kind of meditation for her. She hummed along to the song playing from the radio.

Leaning heavily on one foot in a limp, Kye carefully walked up to the bar. He wasn't used to the customs or the formalities of walking into a bar, he just knew that it had been a long day and he was in need of something to take the day out of his head and replace it instead with a haze.

He was a tall man and his mouses hair was short around his ears but longer and set with wax on top. He wore a simple tunic and a worn cotton cloak which he carefully removed as he sat himself down at the bar, hands tense against the wood and his finger tapping at the bar anxiously. His hazel eyes looked up at the specials board before glancing around for someone to serve him.

"Ooh, that's a good one! It's supposed to be the best drink in existence! Well, at least it is in the universe it comes from. I think I read somewhere that it feels like 'having your brains smashed in by a slice of lemon wrapped round a large gold brick.' I can attest to that. Just don't drink more than two."

Pepper had to give that warning every time someone asked about the Gargle Blaster. She had drank more than two once. The memory made her shudder.

Suni stumbles into the bar, black hair coming loose from the rapidly deteriorating bun on the side of her head. So many sounds. So many colors. She needs a drink, fast.

"He...llo," she says clumsily, seating herself on one of the bar stools.

"Right away!" Pepper made some conversation while pouring the drink, "Funny thing, this stuff is actually meant to be medicine. Basically it's a painkiller and anesthetic. It can numb your pain, or knock you out, depending on how much you drink. No matter what, it'll get you drunk."

She set the glass on the bar, "Voila."

"That's... That's good." It was. Usually, she'd go for something more... alcoholic, but her headache was worse today. "Thank you," she says, trying to remember her manners. The tinkle of glass and ice rises in her mind's eye as waves of orange, scarlet.
