Hundreds of men, women and children fire away, wielding a variety of weapons. Demons and monsters are torn to shreds, an Angel falling from the sky as it's hit by a rocket launcher. The line holds, a nameless luitenant blaring orders, as the humans focus and refocus their fire, taking out summoners and leaders, as well as occasionally providing cover fire for the small amount of artillery they have. A fireball explodes against the line, 2 dead, 5 wounded. An earth golem erupts from the ground, holding a man in it's grasp, and one of the more talented young snipers shoots the gnome warlock that summoned it. Fire rages in the sky and in the earth, as death flashes on both sides. There's a grim certainty that if the demons can close the lines and get in close, the firefight would erupt into a slaughter, but the commanders are skilled and experienced, and each of the survivors is a battle-hardened veteran. Then, the arcane shields erected by the Spectre Coalition fall, and the entire strike force is open to shooting. Heavy gunfire wracks the enemy. The Leviathan the enemy was using as a battleship starts crashing down, the sky-spheres that kept it up shattered, and the men circle the beast. Monsters pour from it's back, but they have no chance. Five more men die, but there's nothing left of the opposition.
Grimly, the men search the battlefield, taking weapons from the fallen humanoid enemies. Some of the beasts are dragged away, either for food or because of the properties of their bodies. Many of the men are using armor made from Leviathan Leather, or Dragon Scales. When supplies are scarce, you use everything you can get. The medics are highly busy now, saving those that can be saved through magical and scientific means, as one of the men dispatches of a surviving Death Knight. The resistance is united in the Coalition, which has formed together on the barren soil of Africa. From hundreds of smaller groups that were hiding out, a more powerful resistance was being formed, supplied with weapons and supplies from the Enclave. However, as their banner of the Coalition runs high, the men start hearing the wailing. The screaming, shrieking sound which can mean only one thing.
Breaking up instantly, the army drops it's weapons, in practised retreat, repressed panic in the air. No attempt is made to resist, not a single man turns to fight, as on the horizon, a horde of white and green forms can be seen. Above them floats a massive behemoth, a figure draped in black, covered in chains from which hang thousands of skulls, each of which screams and wails as if in agony. In each outstretched hand, the God of Death holds the end of the chain, which flows down into the army of screaming ghosts, pale human soldiers, bodies withered and decaying, but still bound to this mortal coil. Commander Mathews looks over the scene, and he could weep. They were foolish, congregating in numbers so large. The Coalition was a dream come true, the first steps of the resistance, but obviously the Old Gods knew to smother such things in the bud. Holding out a hand, he gave the order, the order that would cost him his life.
Men scattered, moving to all sides, fleeing. They took cars, mechs, mini-jets, shuttles, and any transport that might take them. Chaos, as men knew their lives would end this day. The determined edge of hope drove the men to all sides, all so they might not be ripped apart by the approaching horde of the dead. However, the God of Death did not change his path. He wasn't after the men, or the vehicles. Commander Mathews finds a ridge to stand on. By his side are three figures. Two were his fellow commanders, who, resigned to their deaths, stared up at the approaching hellscape. The last was Shiri, the bioweapon gifted from Lord Justice himself, a creature beyond fear. How Mathews envied it. He clutched his ceremonial sword, and unashamed tears of fear streamed over his cheeks.
"Come on, men. This isn't a drill." it was a weak statement, but Mathews gritted his teeth. Planting his feet into the ground, he thought of Samantha, who now surely was fleeing along with the others. Would she survive? Would his single act of heroic defiance perhaps save her? Mathews looked up, and witnessed all his horrors personified. The God of Death held up both hands, and, with an air of satisfaction, dropped the chains. They crashed to the ground, as the horde of dead rushed forward. The man next to Mathews dropped to his knees, and Mathew felt his own trying to drop him as well. But that wouldn't do. If he could buy her a minute, even a second, he would, no matter how hard. His hand on his sword hilt relaxed, as he drew it. "This isn't a drill. This is your last chance to fight for what you believe in. Stand up, dogs!" Pointing his weapon at the enemy, Mathews didn't watch his former colleagues, but he could hear them stand. Jake even fell into a fit of chuckling, as he drew his own sword. Shiri was silent, twitching slightly, long steel claws elongating from it's hands with a slight hiss, as the green lenses that served as eyes focused, Mathews uttered a single primal scream, as he charged towards the zombie horde, steel flashing defiantly in the sunlight, the screams of the commanders mixing with the wailing of the dead.

Commander Mathews died that day. The three leaders of the Coalition, Jake, Mathews and Adams were slaughtered, their souls added to the torturous horde of the dead that followed around the God of Death. However, he had bought that minute. Scattered throughout the continent of Africa, small groups perservered. Scattered, hopeless, crushed and vulnerable. Samantha had, indeed, survived the escape, together with her unborn child. Many brave men who had joined the coalition, as well as those who had avoided the gathering of resistance fighters, were thrown together without food or water. One such group formed, as a man by the name of Johnathan Mattocks stood outside of the cave that he and his family called home. He could see the members of the army fleeing from the unleashed dead, and shouted out to them, offering his shelter. Regardless of the risk, Johnathan couldn't let his fellow man die before his eyes without helping.

Jay Cho, seventeen year old fighter for the resistance, had been doing a great job of fighting off everything he made contact with until the Shinigami arrived. Looking at the beast, Jay was tempted to fight it, but decided against it so he could keep fighting the good fight. "Cheap bastards had a God on their side!" Jay exclaimed before retreating into a cave someone was telling the fighters and soldiers to take refuge in. "*gasp* Thanks man..." He said with gratitude as he looked at the man who let him and the remaining Resistance Army into his home.

Nara walked up to Jonathan. "Thank you." she said, returning her 3DMG blade back into it's holster. She turned to look at her brothers. Ronin and Konin nodded. "Yeah, thanks!" they said in unison. True, it was impossible to tell them apart, but right now it didn't matter. They had to rest. Nara looked outside, her face expressionless as she watched the wind. All is not in balance... she thought.

Zelos was never one to show fear. He had faced beings several times larger than him, and sustained the wounds you'd expect, but he'd never show fear, even for a second. But when the God of Death showed himself, a fear gripped him the likes of which he'd never experienced. Something about that giant God of Death scared him to no end. And he wasn't ready for it. He ran for it, heading for the cave some were taking refuge in. "Well, that could have gone better..." He said.

"I'll say. I'm stupid, but I'm not stupid enough to fight that thing." Jay responded to Zelos, smiling happily before looking around his environment. It was bleak, stony and grey, but at least it was safe. "So what's our next move?" He asked the room, his smile fading and being replaced with a face of determination and courage.

"I have no idea." Zelos says, leaning back against a nearby rock. He winks at Nara, keeping true to what he's probably known for. "Hey there princess."

Nara rolled her eyes, walking over to the other side of the cave.

Ronin snarled at Zelos. "Keep your eyes off of our sister!" he growled.

Konin laughed. "Yeah! She'd probably murder you before you had the chance anyways.."

The two brothers laughed hysterically as they followed their sister.

Nara sighed and put her hand on her forehead, snarling. "Honestly, when are you two going to grow up?" she growled.

The twins looked at each other. "Well...." they said in unison. "....Maybe..... never?" they laughed.

Nara rolled her eyes, smiling weakly. "You're goofs...." Her smile quickly faded and her face was back to no expression at all. "But seriously, grow up a little..."

"ANOTHER!" A hard, commanding voice boomed from somewhere within the cave. There was a shuffling sound, shortly followed by the sound of running water, and then a sound like wet burlap being torn apart, which, was actually what was happening at the moment. The burlap in question, was a sand filled bag that had one point sported the face of a demon painted on its front, that is to say before it was torn apart by a highly pressurized jet of water, a jet emitted from none other than resident water elemental and competitor for the 'prick of the year' award, Jacque Lacroix. Jacque scowled down at the remains of the target and willed the liquid that pooled around it back onto his person and into the shape of an arm, "Brutus, ANOTHER!", Jacque snapped. Jacque was met with the sound of growling and a sack being dragged as Brutus, his faithful companion, dutifully dragged out yet another heavy sack of sand. As Brutus drug the bag, the rhodesian ridgeback pup shook his head every now and then as though there were an actually demon gripped in his small, needle like teeth, something that caused Jacque to smirk approvingly, "Thats far enough boy. Step back.". The pup backed off just in time to avoid being caught in the next move, Jacque wasted no time willing the water into a whip-like tendril, flicking the bag into the air, then rearing the tendril back and swinging it back forward, resulting water's tip splitting the bag and scattering sand everywhere.

Just as Jacque was about to tell Brutus to bring him another target, another resistance soldier jogged behind him, stopping once he was a meter away"Lacroix! We've got new arrivals, Johnathan wants everyone gathered, including you." the soldier said before jogging back from whence he'd came. "Oh joy...more meat for the grinder. Can't wait to meet this bunch" Jacque hissed, his words dripping with sarcasm. Jacque really wasn't in the mood for a meet and greet, however Johnathan had made a request for everyone to be there, and given the fact that the guy had put a roof over Jacque's head when his resistance group was decimated by overwhelming forces several days prior to the new one's arrival, Jacque felt at least some what obligated to listen to Johnathan for now. Jacque willed the water back into the camel pack strapped to his waist, then tapped his leg once, "Brutus, come." he said before walking in the direction that the soldier had come from. Brutus barked happily in response, then quickly fell in line behind his master. It was time to see whether these newcomers would be useful in the resistance, or just more cannon fodder.

"Oh, hello Jacque. Haven't really seen much of you lately." Jay looked at his superior with a small smirk. (Also, I'm pretty sure we're still at that day and still in the cave. Just Saying.) "What's with that angry look? Are ya mad because of the Shinigami outside our doorstep?" He asked Jacque, with a bit of snark to his voice and a shit-eating grin that would break all nineties cartoons.

Byakuren was already in the cave. She had arrived a few moments after the destruction of her temple. She only had few reminants of scrolls that she had studied. Thankfully, she had learnt most of the scrolls she was studying and could work out the rest on her own. Byakuren still felt the great pain in her chest when she first discovered what happened. She sighed, shifting slightly and moving to a darker corner. She was starting to hate this already.

Nara sat down in a corner, far off from other people. She looked over at her brothers, who were going to go bother someone else.....for once.

Ronin and Konin walked around, looking for someone else to bother. Konin clung to his brother's arm. He was technically the youngest, seeing that he was born after Ronin like, five seconds later. Ronin looked at him, a goofy grin on his face. "Hey, what's wrong, Ko?" he laughed. Konin smiled. "Nothing!" he laughed back. He spotted Byakuren and motioned over to her. "We can bother her..." he murmured. Ronin smirked. "If you want to..."

The cave was filled to choking point. Seventeen resistance soldiers, four of which were women, and three of which were heavily wounded. A young lady who was later revealed to be Johnathan's wife tended to the wounded, using the soldier's own medical kits. There were two children, presumably belonging to Johnathan, who were staring with fear at one soldier's limb, which had been ripped of by a particularly vicious inugami. The scent of fear, sweat and blood was thick in the air, and one of the soldiers puked in the corner, adding to the already bad odour of the area. Nobody really spoke, besides in whispers, most of the soldiers being too shocked to speak, having just seen everything they'd hoped for being crushed underfoot. Many of them had never even seen an Old God before, aside from blurry photographs.
Outside, the thrum of soldiers was growing thinner, as the main body of the routed army passed. Johnathan had stopped calling for new arrivals, knowing that his cave could hold no more, and even now it would be a tight fit. Supplies wouldn't hold, and worry was etched clearly onto his face, as he hugged his wife briefly, before turning to address the room. And then he fell silent. In the distance, screams could be heard. Not the wails of the ghosts, but the agonized screams of soldiers being massacred. One man went to the cave mouth to look, and came back white as a sheet. The air filled with the sound of ripping flesh and cracking bone, loose gunfire and explosions. Roars of victory, amidst screams of fear and pain.
The whole spectacle took only twenty minutes, the whole of which passed in silence. Less out of a need to hide than an instinctive fear of speaking during the grotesque massacre, the men stood still, every one pale. By the time it ended, more than one had been forced to the corner to empty the contents of their stomach. There had been an ambush in place. The fleeing men hadn't stood a chance. More than ten thousand good fighting men, massacred, many unarmed and all tired. Johnathan's wife was sitting in the corner, covering the ears of the children, who were trembling wildly, and clenching shut their eyes, as if that would somehow cause the scene to be less horrific. After ten minutes of silence, which nobody wanted to break, Johnathan stood once more, to speak.
"They're all dead. I was never up for the resistance, but they're what kept me 'n mine safe. It's only right that I repay the favour. I'm Johnathan, Mattocks. This is Alice, and the lil' ones are George and Clementine. There ain't much room, and I don't have much, but what I have is yours. I don't know how long supplies will hold, but....." Johnathan looked around, clearly exhausted. It was becoming more and more clear that there wasn't going to be enough food for this many people to stay for any period of time. With the barren monster-filled desert outside, what had seemed to be a safe haven was turning out to be a trap, a slow death instead of a quick one. "Well, I'm sure we'll manage. Justice protect us." The prayer was uttered in desperate tones, and then Johnathan sat back down next to his wife, as she whispered assurances into his ear, both hugging onto one another.

Curious, and blisfully unaware of the problems of supplies, Goerge and Clementine wandered through the cave, trying to keep away from anyone who was severely wounded, or who looked particularly scary. George, the older of the two by three years at ten, led his little sister around. Seeing a girl in the corner, both happily went over to them. While the soldiers, covered in grime and with their expressions of dread were creepy, George was sure that this new girl would be much more interesting. Furthermore, Clementine had tugged on his ragged shirt, which meant she wanted to sit down, and he worked his way through the forest of legs to the edge of the cave, where the girl was sitting all alone. Her strange clothes only made George more intrigued, and despite her fear and natural shyness, Clementine was slowly looking over her older brother's shoulder at the stranger. However, neither child broke the silence, simply staring at the girl.

Byakuren by now was murmuring to herself, practicing her pronunciation of the spells she learnt. It was much more difficult than it looked or sounded, that's for sure. She did it slow enough so it didn't actually cast the spell, so she wouldn't harm anyone here. Soon, she had caught a glimpse of two people, looking exactly alike. Twins. She made a short wave as she continued murmuring the spells over and over again, concentrating to get them right.

Nara sat, sharpening her 3DMG blades quietly. She glanced over at the others, her eyes scanning their faces.

Konin smiled cheekily at her and dragged Ronin over to Byakuren. "Hi!" he laughed, nudging Ronin. Ronin smirked at his brother and then looked at her. "Hi...." Konin smiled at both of them. "Watcha doin?" he asked.

Zelos knew the true nature of the situation. 'Sure, we'll manage all right, but for how long?' he wondered. Undoubtedly they wouldn't last long for any amount of time. The situation was hopeless. But despite all this, he smirked. "Yeah. That whole thing could have gone a whole lot worse." He was leaning against a wall, acting very lax though he far from felt that way. Zelos noticed Nara looking at everyone in turn and smirked once more, winking at her when her eyes fell on him.

[Just tossing this out, I made a request to wizard requesting that Jacque had been housed by Johnathan about two days prior to the latest attack. Hence my post mentioning him being as grateful to John as he currently is.]

Jacque scowled deeply at Jay who'd began to pester him, "Piss off maggot." he hissed contemptuously before walking around the younger man and storming towards where the others had gathered. Brutus stopped, sniffed Jay, then licked the Papilio's leg affectionately before running off after his owner. The looks on everyone's faces as he'd joined the group told Jacque everything he'd needed to know about what had transpired just moments ago. The fuckers had FED on the fallen, the idea of such a thing made the pit of Jacque's stomach boil and burn like acid as he tried to come to terms with his rage. Most of what Jacque currently heard was the blood rushing through his ears, however through the steady throbbing, he vaguely made out what Johnathan had told the group, picking out the fact that space and resources were limited. "As if this is anything most of us aren't used to..." Jacque muttered under his breath. Brutus only whined and lay at his owner's feet, feeling distressed by the tension that hung thick in the air within the cave.

At that Zelos' smile faded. "Well that's just great." He muttered to himself. "You went and pissed off another one. Zelos, Will you ever learn?" He scolded himself, before being unable to stop a bit of a grin to come back to his face. The answer to that question was no.
