I'm still not sure what, in this case for example, would constitute a "negative consequence" if somebody with less tan 6 Soul (which is considerable) attempted to "feel spooked" by the metallic noise.

@AshganYou know in the movies when someone says "I heard something", and the other guys says "It's nothing" and gets ripped to shreds by the killer because he didn't feel the strangeness of the situation? This would be something similar. A 'negative consequence' can simply be passiveness, ignorance, to not take something seriously that will eventually, later go badly. Consequences don't have to be instant.

Hm, okay, I see what you're getting at. But the skill checks are optional; would, in this case again, NOT interacting with the Soul check be the equivalent of a failed interaction? Since they both lead to not taking the threat in, or taking it seriously?

@AshganThe 'skill checks' are mostly for me and my planning. With a 'skill check' I can hint at there being something there of interest, but you as the player decide whether you want to pursue it. You know there is a risk of negative consequences, but you don't know how severe they will be.

Let's say that a character takes it seriously, that they feel some kind of occult presence. If it later turns out to be true, they might not be as startled or crippled when action is required to save their own life. Simplified example here, but you get the idea.

Not interacting with the Soul indicator is technically a 'failed interaction', but the way in which the Soul indicator is described, you can sort of figure that the consequence might not be all that severe.

All right, thanks. I think I understand better now. It's mostly the Spirit-related ones that gave me a bit of trouble, especially because there is some overlap with Willpower, I feel (even in your example, you say that the bonus of positively checking the Spirit indicator would be to be less startled or crippled with fear - exactly what Willpower wards against). That said, Spirit probably branches out into a region of its own when the occult dial gets turned up, and at that point I expect things will be clearer.

Exactly this. At these 'low levels', they overlap quite a bit. So, your concerns are completely valid. But when things move along and the occult encounters and matters become more complex, the difference between 'soul' and 'willpower' will be greater. Willpower is also for normal threats and conflicts that are not of occult nature, so there is another difference.

@Ashgan@TrivvalHah, I knew this was coming. 'Mental resilience' is definitely something you need when you are getting mugged, raped, or getting your face bashed in by a stranger. And then there is the occult part. So, Soul and Willpower are attributes that go and in hand.
