Rukeewei laughed. "Yes I think you will enjoy it much more than the normal version. That one is served with a live mouse." He commented, his tone making it difficult to determine whether or not he was joking. "I do wish you could visit more often as well, but...or, actually, I guess you are able to. Sorry, I sometimes forget how easy it is for all of you to travel. I, um, probably won't be able to make a feast for you every time or anything, but all of you are always welcome in our home."

Meesei felt just as warmth within her as Ariel, though for different reasons. Now that she was able to get away from her responsibilities for long enough to spend some time with Sabine, Meesei was able to see how much Sabine's life had developed. She had family, love, and now had serious plans for having children of her own. Although their lives were still strange by much of the world's standards, it was the kind of life that Meesei had always wanted to give to Sabine, and it was so close to coming to fruition. There was just one more task, one more goal to complete, and Sabine would be able to live that life without worry.

"You know, Sabine, I believe there is something I could do to help you with that. There is an enchantment I can apply to a pair of rings, or other objects, that I have used for...similar reasons." Meesei offered, turning her attention towards Ariel to explain in more detail. "It binds the two rings together, so that charging a certain type of magic through one ring changes the color of the gem on its counterpart, regardless of how far apart they are. If you wanted to see your sister more regularly, without it needing to be an entire event, you could use them to convey simple messages. Such as notifying her if it is safe to open up a portal straight into your kitchen, for instance."

"Hmm, well I remember it was a whole ordeal to set up a dolmen during the Planemeld." Hal-Neesa answered. "The worm cultists would have to build up these stone platforms, inscribe them with the proper Daedric sigils, then carry out a ritual to summon up the anchor. Fortunately for you, the whole process will be a bit more streamlined this time around. Since the barriers to Vile's realm are weaker, the sigils do not have to be arranged so precisely, so you don't have to bring along a construction team. Flat ground will do, and the sigil stones will take care of inscribing the sigils. Still have to carry out the ritual, though, and protect the sigils on the ground during the process. I'd say about...ten to twenty minutes, depending on how many mistakes they make. Once the anchor is down, Daedra will start pouring through, and it'll become a lot harder to dislodge."

Neesa was mostly neutral in her attitude when speaking to the Legate General, but her gaze towards Teroiah was a bit sterner, perhaps judgmental. "I would say to be careful about being too ambitious with your plans, child. I know of countless advantages to dividing one's forces, of course, but you will be fighting in the enemy's home territory. Not to mention, the Skaafin make use of enchanted mirrors to communicate instantly across vast distances. Their commanders can coordinate quickly and easily, no matter where they are. If they notice you spreading your army too thin, they will take advantage. Quickly. Though, perhaps you can be clever enough to take advantage of that, if you really put your mind to it. I would not say that the Skaafin are superior beings, or any such nonsense. They may not be Dremora, but they are still Daedra, and still arrogant enough to make a Thalmor look humble."

In one of the more strange reactions she had given, Neesa suddenly started to smile, seemingly unprompted. "You know, all of this talk is actually somewhat...nostalgic for me. It brings me back to the very first war I ever fought in. I was no one then: a lowly archer with a few pathetic magic tricks. But, it was still an experience to learn from. Like these Skaafin, the Elves were an arrogant sort, and just loved showing their superiority over their enemy. The strategy of our leaders was simple, and mostly unchanged through the whole short war. They would march up to their cities, and our Champion would challenge their leader in single combat while the armies fought in the fields. No matter how superior the Elves thought they were, our Champion always won, and while their commanders were tied up in battle, our side had an easier time against a less coordinated opponent."

Karl's first mouthful of the next course was well received, but his chewing halted on the words 'live mouse.' He gave Rukeewei, Ariel, and Sabine worried looks. However, the conversation moved on by the time he swallowed.

"Hmmmmm," Ariel's response to Meesei inflected with interest. "I could use something like that for a great many things. But, I am no less interested in using it to keep in touch with all of you." She put her hands in her lap. "I admit, there were some times when I started out in Thorn where I would just feel flat, tired, desperate just to speak with old friends and family." She smiled at Rukeewei. "I had friends, it was true..." Her eyes went to Meesei again. "I still felt I missed Vos and the rest of you after spending so much time. Especially Sabine. I think more regular visits will be wonderful, if it suits you."

Sabine nodded vigorously. "I may be busy in the coming few months, but I will try to make time."

"It's settled then. We'll take you up on your kind offer, Meesei." Ariel grinned and finally got started on her meal.

"I can empathise with you on your feelings, Ariel," Karl added. "When I first moved out of Wayrest, there was so much new and unknown that it exhausted me on numerous occasions. I felt very homesick. I sometimes still do."

Ariel looked at Sabine and Karl sideways. "Perhaps you two need a romantic honeymoon in Wayrest's summer." The joke passed quickly as Ariel addressed Meesei once more. "Speaking of romance, Sabine tells me you have found some time for another lately. I understand she had reasons to be secretive over her letters, so I don't know much more than that, but it was still a pleasant surprise. Is there anything more you can tell us or is it still a little too forbidden?"

Teroiah's lips pursed in as if she was holding a mouthful of needles. Her eyes narrowed at Neesa as if warning her of treading such ground alluding to her recent defeat would make any difference to the vampire's attitude.

Gro-Tagnud did not know the context. He continued bluntly. "I don't know if the daedra of a prince who's wheelhouse is deception are going to be so easy to goad into straightforward single combat, but that can at least give us some insight to develop our strategy." He looked to Teroiah. "Twenty minutes is a long time in a fight, let alone adding how long it'll take for people to sneak around to where they need to be. However, the way I see it, it'll take us even longer to fight our way to those sites loudly as one army. We can't afford to to spend any extra time when the enemy is going to outnumber us so much. We'd be ground down like grain in a mill. As for pulling this misdirection strategy off, let's imagine ourselves as long-lived beings who can talk face to face with our subordinates on demand and have a real high opinion of our prowess and the enemy's stupidity."

He eyed Teroiah and Hal-Neesa for an extra second with his stern features.

"How do they handle this situation?" He continued. "How do we convince them they are in control? How do we maintain that while taking control away from them?"

Meesei had to stop for a few moments to think on precisely how to word her response. She took a bite out of the snake, then another drink of wine to buy a few seconds to collect her thoughts. "Hmm...I can say that the secrecy was not just because of the lack of security with the letters. There are some other reasons that I have to keep my personal relationships more private than most. You know how my position places rather high expectations upon me, which can complicate matters at times. I have to avoid showing undue favoritism between clans, or even the perception of favoritism. I have found someone, yes, but knowledge of that relationship could cause issues between certain groups." She explained. Strictly speaking, Meesei's words were not a complete lie, as her relationship with Lunise would certainly raise some questions about Meesei's connections with the Dominion, and Dominion clans, but that was far from the greatest of reasons they needed to remain secretive.

"What I can say is that she is a beautiful Altmer. Someone who can be difficult to get to know, but who is definitely worth the effort. She filled a void in my life that I did not know I had." Meesei added.

"Well, make sure your men are competent enough not to make mistakes, and you can cut that down to ten minutes." Hal-Neesa remarked. If there was one trait that she had in common with both the Legate General and Teroiah, it was that they had no desire to temper their words for the sake of diplomacy. "If you don't think your armies are skilled enough to even hold off for that long against the enemy, then you may as well resign yourself to death here and now. What you get out of bringing down a dark anchor is basically an entire extra army. Do I really need to explain the value of teleporting in an army of reinforcements right into the middle of a fight. Moving around your army is going to take time regardless; if we can shape up your frontline to be decently competent, then we can bring down an anchor by the time the rear of your force has caught up to the position. Risky? Sure, but if you want guarantees, then you're joining the wrong invasion."

Without skipping a beat, Neesa continued on with something of a satisfied smirk towards Teroiah. "Now, as for dealing with their commanders, I would have thought the same about the Elves we fought. They were supposed to be the 'superior' race of intelligent wizards, yet they fell for the same trick every time. Helped that our champion never left any survivors to report on what happened. And that Morihaus was an exceptionally better leader than any of their lesser commanders. Our victories were...decisive. Obviously, I do not mean that we should start shouting at the Skaafin commanders to take a duel with our champion, but they are Daedra, so they will be leading from the frontlines. I think we can just send in Hircine's Champion eliminate any commanders we find, and they will not even consider retreating from that fight. I judge her to be acceptably competent for that role. Aside from myself, she is obviously the strongest that any of you three have available to you. Best of all, she and her minions have that irritating 'hero' mentality that will, at least, make them just eager to agree to it."

Ri'vashi hid her suspicion and anger towards Hal-Neesa for now. Aside from her suggestion to use these portals to Coldharbour, Ri'vashi did not find herself disagreeing with her plan. "There is some merit to what the vampire says. Any Daedra will drastically underestimate our Champion and her pack. They are a small team that can move quickly, and with deadly purpose. Ri'vashi doubts that the Daedra would ever become outright demoralized, but they seem to place great focus on powerful, elite units, which, in Ri'vashi's opinion, will still not be able to stand against the Champion's pack."

"An Altmer woman?" Ariel said, slightly surprised. She paused for a moment. "Hm, I should not be so surprised, you must meet all sorts of people in your position, from all over the world. Oh, I love the intrigue of it. A lover kept secret...Do you at least have enough chances to spend time together?"

Teroiah took in a careful breath. "I understand the effectiveness of matching our best against the enemy's elite, whether they make room for the two groups to fight or not. However, before you start reminiscing about your halcyon days of witnessing the creation of the Mundus at the hands of the Aedra, may we reconcile what we can gain from this plan? Are these daedra as susceptible to disarray as a conventional army? Are they smart enough to know what we may be doing? If Meesei is rendered unable to bring the axe to Vile, likely out of sheer bad luck, our chances are made far slimmer."

"I actually like the idea," Gro-Tagnud said. "Even if it doesn't disrupt the enemy too much, it'll be a good believable distraction. I was briefed on the Hircine cult's general culture, General Ri'vashi. They'll see the champion picking fights for the sake of it like any other lycan looking to show their dominance. They'll try to take the chance to put her down, drawing their attention." He looked to Neesa. "With respect, I have to insist that the anchors aren't placed too near to the army. The only thing better than having an extra army at your back is having an extra army behind the enemy. Of course, if we find a defensible spot to hold up where there just happens to be an anchor site we can exploit, doesn't mean we have to pass that up."

Meesei smiled. "If distance was not such an easy problem for me to solve, then I would not, but fortunately, it is only time that I have to worry about for now. I would say we have enough time together, considering the circumstances."

Rukeewei spent a few moments in thought as he started on his stew. "I can hardly even imagine what it would be like to have to worry about those kinds of things. Politics, a public image...I don't envy that part of your position. Or many other parts of it, if I am being honest. I do hope things calm down for you once everything you are doing is over."

Meesei nodded. "I believe you echo all of our sentiment. Though, I do sometimes wonder what I would do with my skills if I did not have such worries. Or if I was not part of my clans? I suppose most mages join various conclaves or guilds. I am curious, have you had any reason to use your non-alchemical magical talents, Ariel? I do not think I could bring myself to not at least keep myself in good practice."

Neesa answered quickly. "Daedra will never fear nor rout, but they are just as able to be confused and disorganized as anything else. Moreso, really. The Skaafin will not be as effective without their leaders to react to your tactics. As long as you all are acceptably competent commanders yourselves, you should have the advantage. And perhaps it might do something for your soldiers' morale to see their allies slaughtering the enemy elite. Should Hircine's most important dog die, then you can just pick up the axe." She said, looking directly to Teroiah. "And if you all fail, then I guess I will just do it myself. But please, do not take that as an invitation to go jump onto a Skaafin sword. I would rather not have to go deal with a Daedric Prince myself."

Ri'vashi was becoming more adept at hiding her irritation with Neesa, despite the continued offenses she liked to make. She realized that she needed to ignore any personal feelings on the matter and focus purely on strategy. "Provided we make sure the ritual is not interrupted in each case, there are many options open to us for how to use the anchors. We could use them to augment defenses, force the enemy to attack away from their own defenses, surprise attacks, and the like. Ri'vashi would suggest, perhaps, that we vary our approach on how we use them, so as to avoid becoming predictable to the enemy."

"Hmph, use them however you like, as long as you use them." Hal-Neesa commented. "At the core of it all, we still have to make sure your armies are actually going to be competent enough to fight against Daedra at all. Your normal formations, tactics, and all that aren't going to work like usual. Let's go over some troop formations..."

Ariel's expression changed thought again at the change of subject. "Hmm, let's see..." She tapped a finger on the table. "I still use it for some things. Knowing some basic spells certainly makes some alchemical processes much easier, especially when controlling heating or cooling. But, apart from that, I have only really used it either to help understand the girls' symptoms when they fall ill, occasionally for healing little wounds, other small applications...It's always there, as well, should I need to defend myself, though thankfully I have not needed to do so since living here." She looked directly to Meesei again. "I must admit, the more complicated magic that I use is completely to do with my more complicated alchemy. There are a few mages who take work here and there in the city, but most other mages in Thorn who make their living from magic are as you say; academics."

"Indeed, I would hope you would be safe here. That is one of the greatest advantages of living in a city, I will admit. Though most cities do have their dangerous elements, I suppose you know how to avoid them. And it is also a relief to know that no other outside dangers have made their way to you. I...well I do suppose you have a right to know about this. Since the last time you helped us, I had someone keep an eye on you, just to guarantee your safety." Meesei explained, pausing for just a moment as her eyes glanced to the young girls nearby. She still needed to avoid being too specific. "I did not have too much or a reason to believe that you would be in any danger, but I would not have felt right just leaving you alone. Someone from one of the local clans has been checking up on you, watching out for suspicious activity. I can happily report that our...adversary does not even so much as knows about your connection to us, much less has any actual knowledge of where you are. If it was something you were worrying about, I believe you can dispel any of those fears."

"Oh." Ariel's surprise could not be described as pleasant. She placed her wine carefully down on the table and put one hand over the other. "I wish you would have told me, Meesei. I, of course, trust that you only had the best of intentions, but..." She glanced at Rukeewei and back to Meesei. "...If there are threats against us, we wish to be the first to know."

Sabine ate another spoonful of pumpkin stew, avoiding Ariel's eyes.

Meesei simply nodded. "Apologies. That was my sentiment as well, but I was, how should I put it, strongly advised by my..." She began, her eyes drifting again towards the young girls. "...expert advisor to avoid mentioning it to a soul. Not even my own, um...family. I had to pester him for months to get him to agree to let me tell you now. I may be in charge, but I chose them to aid me for a reason, and I have to be willing to trust their advice when I know I am dealing in their area of expertise. As I said, though, you were never in any danger. Their investigations over the past few years have pretty much confirmed it. You and your family are safe here, and if you ever find yourself in danger from something else, you will have our protection."

Pausing a moment for a drink of wine, Meesei continued, just as friendly as she had been the entire night. "In the name of transparency, if you wish to know your secret protector, I am free to tell you."

Rukeewei certainly had his own thoughts on the matter. He was not necessarily uncomfortable, but for the moment, he wanted to let Ariel be the one to speak. He supposed it pertained a bit more directly to her.

Ariel had straightened up, contradicting the relaxation the wine had made her express. She turned her upper body and head around to check on the girls, who were almost done with their course. Ariel took a small breath in and knitted her brow, before turning back around and answering Meesei.

"I think I would like to know, but what I would prefer to know is how long you intend to keep watch." She sighed quickly. "I would like you to tell me once the girls head to bed whether you honestly believe we will be able to live without worrying about the strangers around us. And if so, when that will be."

"Not long now," Sabine answered sincerely. "We are almost at the end. We can promise that."

Meesei chuckled lightly to herself. "Ariel, I need not wait to tell you that you are safe. Saras closed the investigation months ago. You do not have to be suspicious about any strangers...well, no more than you usually would. The world is not a safe place, but you are in no more danger than anyone else. And, as Sabine said, hopefully the same will be true for us soon enough."

Rukeewei listened on, absentmindedly tapping a finger against one of the small horns above his eye. "You said we are safe here, though? I mean...I guess that's the important part, at least. Still would've liked to know, but I guess Saras is like one of those spies that like to keep every single thing a secret. I guess that's what they're supposed to do...or at least that is what it's like in those novels, and I think they're 'real' enough...I think..." He said, hesitating and stammering more and more as he went on. After a moment, he looked hesitantly at Ariel and rubbed at the back of his neck. "I'm...going to stop talking now."

Ariel reached to rub Rukeewei's upper arm. "No need to be nervous, dear. We're both out our depth with all this 'spy' business, I think."

"There are similarities with the books," Sabine said. "It is not as exciting, though. Just strict. I would not like needing to act like Saras does."

"Sabine's right," Karl added. "I have never had to meet the man personally but everyone at home is beholden to his policies on keeping things a secret. No one arrives or leaves without Saras knowing where they've been and where they're going. I understand the need, it's just feels a little patronising at times."

"Hmhm." Sabine smiled. "I wonder if he knows we are here?" She asked rhetorically, while looking sideways at Meesei.

Karl spoke up again. "Rukeewei, Ariel, I know this is a change of subject, but you mentioned earlier about finding schooling for your children. What are the school houses like here? Do they get along with the other children there?"

"Oh, well, I have to assume they are." Rukeewei answered, showing at least somewhat less nervousness. "You never really know if children are telling you the whole story, but I think they are fitting in now. It's not as bad as it probably would be if we weren't in a big city. They aren't the only non-Argonians. And it's not as expensive as it could be. The An-Xileel funds part of it in the city, for their own reasons, no doubt. Still, they are able to learn more than I would be able to teach them."

Rukeewei placed his hand lightly on Ariel's. "I think you would be smart enough to teach them just as much, dear." He smiled, looking back towards Karl. "But there would hardly be time, with how much she needs to put into her store."

"Had I known what I was missing as a hatchling, I might have tried to run away to a city." Meesei chuckled. My education in a remote Argonian village was strictly limited to magic, the history of the clan, and some scattered Argonian folklore. Everything I know about the world, and other worlds, I had to learn on my own later in life. Aside from some books, I suppose, though few written in Jel actually pertained to the world outside Black Marsh."

Ariel returned Rukeewei's look when he placed a hand on her shoulder. "I think you overestimate me, dear. Regardless, it is not just time and knowledge." Ariel looked to her plate. "I don't want the girls growing up feeling separate from the rest of the city. I don't want them to feel like outsiders when this is our home. The best way I know to prevent that is to allow them to make friends here. To learn from their peers."

Meesei's comment had Ariel nodding in understanding. "And I would guess a nomadic tribe would not carry an extensive library of books with them." Ariel tilted her head. "Were you always curious about the world beyond the marsh growing up, Meesei? What did you know about cities back then?"

The table was almost finished with their main course. Only Sabine and Ariel had food left. The former because of the speed she ate and the latter because of the amount of talking she was doing.

"Hmm, I would not say I was always terribly curious, though only because I did not know how much there was to know." Meesei answered. "It is easy to become complacent when you are trapped in your own experiences. I perhaps could have become curious had there not been magic to occupy my mind. In the arcane lies a world of mysteries accessible from anywhere in Mundus."

"You do make it sound amazing. Magic, that is." Rukeewei commented. "I could never wrap my head around it myself. Not that I, uh, exactly had tutors, mind you. Quite the opposite, really. I remember growing up, my brother managed to figure out how to cast the smallest of fire spells from this book he 'found'. It was a weak little thing, could hardly start a campfire with it. But, he somehow managed to, in the middle of the rainy season, managed to start a fire in the middle of the house. Burned up half of our room before we got it under control. Father whipped his tail bloody after that one, and our parents forbade us from doing anything having to do with magic after it. That incident might have been what caused him to start being so cautious, honestly."

After finishing his story, Rukeewei also finished off the last of his wine, and since the bottle on the table was also empty, he stood up to grab another. "Would anyone like more wine?" He asked. "Oh, and we do have dessert as well, if anyone would like some. Though, I understand if you need to wait a few minutes."

Sabine and Karl once more exchanged a look. Sabine reluctantly smiled at Rukeewei. "I will wait for a moment, thank you."

"Young people discovering fire spells seems to be a common tale with similar ends," Karl remarked. He slipped at his wine. "I'm sorry your room was burnt. I hope no one was hurt."

Sabine tried to be more encouraging. "It is easy to make magic seem big and overwhelming. It's just another skill. I do not know much about wine and brewing. I know the alchemy. That is true. But, I would have to learn as much as you did to make anything worth drinking, Rukeewei." She grinned. "I think you are also the best cook amongst us all."

"Hmm, yeah, it's not the only time I've heard that kind of story either." Rukeewei remarked before stepping away for just a few moments to grab another bottle of wine. "I guess fire is just alluring for a child. Something simple to cast, but fun to play with. I'm surprised more cities don't burn down." He laughed.

Rukeewei uncorked the wine and continued while he poured himself another glass. "I don't think I would even have any kind of talent for magic, but I can say that it is useful. Enchanters in the city charge a horn and a tail to ply their trade, but my dear Ariel has really done wonders for my business. Casks with magic to keep the spirits cool, alchemical concoctions to keep the fleshflies out of the inn. The Wamasu's Nest has really started to seem like more of a...high class establishment. Not exactly, but closer."

"Oh..." Ariel waved a hand forward. "It was just side projects here and there. I would do the same ten times over for you, dear, and not just because of all the help you have given me." Ariel's eyes lingered on Rukeewei's face, showing a small smile. "We make a good team."

Dessert came out in short order. The girls were very excited for it, but their energy quickly waned once they had their fill of sweets. They still complained vehemently when ordered to bed in spite of their repeated yawning. However, they were eventually upstairs and quiet enough for the conversation at the table to shift.

Sabine in particular waited with her hand turning her wine cup nervously. When Ariel resumed her seat, Sabine breathed in to speak but was too quiet to be noticed at first.

Ariel spoke over her. "Meesei, I must ask. You've been showing little...sadnesses at times, I've noticed. When I revealed the bergamot extract and a few times during dinner." She lowered her brow in concern. "Are you okay?"

Despite the nature of Ariel's question, Meesei maintained a good-natured grin as she answered, showing no change in her mood. "Oh, I am quite alright. It simply brought up some old memories for me, and not unpleasant memories, mind you. Just some memories that I find...awkward to dwell upon now. It just reminded me of sharing a bottle of Argonian bloodwine with someone else a long time ago in my village. My, um, first love. Again, not a painful memory by any means, but now that my life and my affections have moved on, I do not feel that I should dwell on it for too long."

Regardless of her words, Meesei did have a hard time preventing herself from thinking back to that point in her life. It had always been somewhat painful for her to think of what she had left behind in her former life, but the rational part of her mind knew that the way she went about leaving it had been for the best.

Ariel tightened her lips and nodded understandingly. "Nostalgia does have its power, none can deny it." She sucked in a breath and returned to mild worry. "Is it something you do not like thinking about? It sounds like a good memory. Or, at least, not one that would have any harm in dwelling on." She hid behind her wine glass as she sipped.

As usual, Sabine asked the question that stepped ahead of their remit. "Did you want to try and find her, Meesei?"
