Marianne smiled her thanks to Kyle as the young vampire had taken the disc and began the process of transferring the new album over to the iPod. "Thank you Kyle, I admit the new age is still difficult for me." She stammered, it wasn't that it was difficult persay, Marianne simply chose to work her magic through those who often never relied upon technology to create their craft. So simply, she did not need to learn it herself.

As Kyle continued to load the iPod with her new music, the television program switched to a promotion Marianne was quite familiar with.

"Miriam, with their new lead single My Dark Heart has taken the charts by storm. They'll be performing a midnight show for everyone all their fans..." The announcer continued to chatter about the location, and the theme of the band before panning to the lead musician, the pale black haired vocalist herself. She smiled a ruby smile to the cameras before she spoke.

"I want to personally invite all of you to enjoy the show, we'll be performing all our favorite songs from the new album. She blushed a little as she announced the surprise for the night, "I want to also want to let you hear for the very first time, Marianne as an acoustic piece." Marianne's ears pricked up at the mention of the song, as an acoustic piece? Her smile mirrored Miriam's on the television as the musician continued. "I was inspired by this story, a dark muse who's been hiding through time and influencing artists. She's alone, and at the same time at the center of all these stories. She's my dark heart, and I want to show her my appreciation with a piece a little...more intimate." Her eyes took on a haze as she seemed lost in her own thoughts, before snapping back. "I want you all to come tonight, let's show the dark muse our appreciation!" There was a roar of applause as the announcer took over for the interview once more.

Marianne was lost in her own excitement, a tribute to her? She'd often influenced writers, artists, and musicians from the shadows. Tempting them with her stories, creating a world they could draw upon, and maybe, just put a little light to what often remained in the dark. She'd seen portraits of the "dark muse", stories of men and women offering their lives to her, yet something about this, felt important to her. Miriam was one of her favorites, she'd visited the musician more than once, with stories of the dark, her lives, her loves, and left her before the dawn. Always leaving the conversations as a hazy memory, just on the edge of Miriam's conscious mind. She always assumed it was a dream, but the look she gave the last night made Marianne feel that maybe she still remembered her. She had to admit, having someone actually remember her was an unusual situation. She'd prided herself on the fact she'd always remained just out of reach of her subjects. She'd been around for so long, that this was how she remained connected to the real world. Lest she'd become lost in the past, much like other vampires. Who eventually grew despondent, and eventually choosing to end their lives by watching a sunrise.

"Kyle! We need to go to that show!" Marianne smiled as she felt herself lost in the music blaring over the television. "I think we all could use a little time outside, and that is the perfect event. I think we should get the others, it would do them good to soak up a little of this century." She grinned excitedly as the chance to hear Miriam's song had her somewhat infatuated. It was an odd sensation, but the chance to feel something may have been worth the chance.

Sebastian kept his eyes on Bas this time. He was curious about what the vampire was doing, since he figured out he wasn't actually looking for a book. Curiosity was something Sebastian used to feel a lot, but these days, not so much. Isolating one self would make them not really care about anything, after all, but Sebastian was curious about the other housemates he was forcing himself to be with. Which, he was trying to change, so that was a good thing. There was also the matter of his depressing thoughts. His fellow housemates distracted from those, at least. He watched the amber liquid being poured into two glasses. He recgnoized it as scotch. He had tasted it in his travels, though he didn't know the true taste of it. He could barely recall anything from his human days. If possible, his eyebrow went higher as Bas continued to talk. He didn't quite understand why the younger vampire spoke the way he did, but Sebastian did have a more proper way of speaking. So, anything that wasn't proper always caused slight confusion in Sebastian. Obviously, he ran into a lot of that in this day and age.

Brooding? Sebastian almost snorted. He couldn't disagree. He had been brooding, after all. Perhaps Bas was more clever than he originally thought. He picked up the glass of stotch, swirling the liquid around like he had seen humans do before, and took a sip. It almost felt pointless, but he found eating and drinking gave him something to do. And, if anybody needed something to do, it was Seb. He listened to Bas, sipping the stotch carefully, as if it could have an affect on him. Some amusement thrummed through him at the younger vampire's little speech. Again, Bas wasn't wrong. That was getting almost annoying. He was more insightful than Sebastian was anticipating.

He looked down into his glass, not saying anything. Sebastian
was stubborn enough that he hadn't communicated that much with the other housemates, but there was something about not replying at all to Bas that entertained Sebastian. Perhaps because Bas tried really hard to get a reaction out of him. It was cute sometimes. Most of the time, it was annoying. But, Bas said something so foriegn to Sebastian, that the older vampire's head snapped up. "Mario Kart?" he repeated in his rough voice, actual emotion in the form of confusion in his voice, "What is this Mario Kart?"

Excellent, it seemed that Seb had taken the bait, and with the older vampire’s interest peaked Bas attempted to reel him in. He wasn’t surprised that Seb was unfamiliar with Mario, honestly, he wouldn’t be surprised if the guy had never driven a real car before let alone a virtual one. Bas, on the other hand, tried very hard to stay modern but having lived through so many decades he always remained behind enough to stand out, and as the years went by there was so much more to learn than in decades’ past.

So, Bas was usually a trend or two, or in the case of his music taste a decade or two, behind. He had a variety of consoles but his newest stuff was already outdated, and he still used a record player in a completely unironic fashion to listen to music. He enjoyed video games even more than movies or the television because they not only entertained but involved him making the experience more immersive. He detested playing online with stranger who constantly brought up the fact that his mother was a whore; how they knew this and what it had to do with the challenge was beyond him, but he found it aggravating. He preferred to play against someone who was physically there and most vampires found the activity childish, and Kyle was better than him so he got frustrated and broke too many controls playing against Kyle.

It was Kyle who had helped him hook up the games and consoles to his television and advised him on things to buy. Currently he had the Mario Kart for Wii, which he really liked because it had motorcycles which Bas thought were fun, and the little steering wheel controls which made the cartoon-y game feel a bit more real. He doubted Seb had a lot of experience with modern games, which meant he’d be an easy target for at least of few races, but also meant that he’d suggested a good one for his first game.

“Well Seb-bro, I’m glad you asked. It’s a game, human children play it so a vampire of your advanced age and, I’m assuming here, intelligence, should be able to catch on in a snap. Basically, Mario is a plumber who competes in races with a gorilla, a princess, even his own brother, across a variety of tracks for who the fuck knows why. It’s an entertaining test of dexterity, strategy, and concentration, plus so much better than brooding alone in a dark room. I have everything set up in my room, plus a wicked sick record collection, unless you think a game for human children might be too difficult for you?” Bas half joked and half taunted, challenging the other vampire.

Sebastian didn't bother to correct Bas on his name; he had done it the first few times it happened, and it seemed to only encourage Bas. If Sebastian's eyebrow stayed lifted any longer, it may never come down, but Bas' explaintion of the game caused it to stay lifted as high as it would go. After the younger vampire finished, Sebastian took a moment to take all the information in. Slowly, his eyebrow went to its normal spot, and he gave a long blink. In all honesty, he still wasn't sure what the game was about. He had seen Kyle and Bas playing a video game once, but had refused to try it himself. He didn't understand how it was a test of all those things. It just looked... intimdating, like the computer. Bas might have well spoken in a lanauage he didn't know.

"I do not see the point of partaking in something that children enjoy. Especially human children. The fact you find humor and entertainment in it concerns me," he said, staring at Bas with no trace of concern on his face or in his voice, "Do tell, what is the enjoyment?"

Bas was growing impatient, even the way the Seb blinked was slow, he wasn’t used to having to wait this long for things. Generally, when bas wanted to do something it happened immediately, and right now, and the more he talked about and thought about Mario Kart, he wanted someone to play the game with him. He wasn’t used to vampires this behind on things and for a second he wondered if this was how Kyle felt every time the rest of them needed help with technology or the modern world. He’d never really thought that much about why he enjoyed video games he just did, Bas wasn’t much of thinker in that respect.

“Dude this is probably the least concerning thing I’ve been up too but the enjoyment is, huh, I guess it’s like a movie, or like books but less boring and dusty. Your part of the game, the outcome is based on how well you do, you gotta earn it. Plus you gotta develop skills to get good. But I guess winning is the most fun.” He said pacing as he talked, standing still for too long made him antsy and continued to try and explain to Seb why some things were fun. “To really get it you’ve gotta try it, like sex I mean just explaining it to someone it sounds, whatever, but then once you pop that cherry you realize it’s totally fucking great right? Full discloser it’s not as great as fuckin’ but there’s not much else to do around here during the day.” Bas continued, kind of enjoying hearing himself talk.

Sebastian was intrigued by the sound of this... game. If he was going to change here, he had to be open to new things. Perhaps learning how to play a video game was one of those things. After all, what did he plan on doing? Sit around all day and read? While he could do that, obviously the other members of the house weren't huge on the idea. He was here to form bonds, to find a reason to continue living, and not fall back into murderous habits. Locking himself in the study was a way he centered himself, but he coudln't keep hiding out here. It was about time he learned how to do something in this modern world, even if he felt a little intimdated. It was but a little toy, though. Sebastian could handle that.

He found some amusement in the way Bas began pacing. He wasn't sure if it was from agitation or impatience. Sebastian's eyes followed the other vampire as he explained this game. "You have a crude way of explaining things," Sebastian deadpanned, a little thrown by the mention of sex. He can't even remember the last time... he mentally shook his head. He can't even remember when he first had sex, let alone the last time. He wasn't going to tell Bas that, though. "Perhaps I can try this... game for children. Though I still do not quite understand the appeal, perhaps I will after learning," he stood up from the chair, tiling his head at Bas, "Lead the way, young one." he kept his face blank, but he was grinning on the inside.

Relief and elation flowed through Bas, finally something to end his boredom. Being over three hundred years old he wasn’t accustomed to being called young one people had called him a lot worse in his days and he didn’t mind nicknames. He lead the way to his room, a place that was full of dark colors and drawn curtains so hopefully Seb would feel fairly at home, even with the lack of books. The walls of his room were a adorn with pirate flags, posters, swords, antique guns, and movie posters. The floor and table surfaces were littered with a few empty blood bags and bottles of alcohol, and most of the surfaces in his room had a decent layer of dust. His coffin, an official KISS casket, drew the most attention out of the variety of kitschy objects in the room, black and adorn with flames and the members of the band KISS it wasn’t exactly what one expected to see a vampire rise from.

“Welcome to my lair!” He said proudly as he flung the door open to his room and excitedly booted up the Wii and turned the television on. Bas shoved a control already nestled in a plastic steering wheel into Seb’s hands and gave a very basic rundown on the controls of the game as he searched the general vicinity for the disc itself. Eventually he found it in the wrong case and popped it into the system. “Are you ready to join the rest of us into the twenty first century, Ol’ Seb? I call dibs on the gorilla by the way.” He added as the screen loaded up.

Sebastian paused in the threshold of Bas' room just to take it all in. It was... different. Sebastian's own room still looked like nobody had moved into it, the only thing getting use the very plain coffin in it. He noticed the messiness of it, and felt a frown taking over his face. Sebastian had spent plenty of times in disgusting messes and now that he was trying to gain back some sort of humanity, he found he really liked clean spaces. But, this wasn't his room, and he wasn't one for telling other people how to live. Honestly, he didn't care. If Bas wanted to be a slob, then okay. Sebastian eyed a few of the pirate flags on the wall. Ah, he remembered that time. He had traveled with quite a few different pirate groups before. He eyed Bas, wondering if he was a face in his past he didn't remember, but he was pretty sure he had never met the other vampire before.

Sebastian stared at the KiSS coffin, not sure who the men were, or why they looked that way. He was distracted when a controller was shoved at him. His fingers wrapped around it automactially.,and he looked down at it with slightly widened eyes, though he got control of his expression quickly. "It's a steering wheel," he deadpanned, eyes taking in a bean bag chair in front of the TV, before he slowly sat on it. It sunk down strangely, and he shifted some, curious about the noise it made and how it felt. "I assume so," he answered Bas' question, and glanced at the other vampire. Once it was on the character screen, he titled his head, eyes darting between the different characters. It took him a second to figure out how to, exactly, choose one, but he finally landed on Princess Daisy. "I believe I'm ready," he said, looking down at the controller again, remembering how Bas told him to play.

Bas was slightly amused that Seb had chosen Princess Daisy, he hadn’t pegged the older vamp for a princess but then not everyone could be as predictable as Kyle. At least the out of touch vampire knew what a steering wheel was good, he’d rather not have to explain how to drive. Once characters were selected, a course was chosen and the game began. Bas took it easy at first, simpler tracks and holding off on the items while Seb started to get the hang of things. But ultimately the fun was in the competition so once it seemed like the guy was getting the hang of it Bas went ham, taking him to the rainbow bridge and throwing shells as day started to fade into night.

It didn't take long for Sebastian to get the hang of the game to be okay at it. It wasn't as complex or complicated as the older vampire had been expecting. It was almost laughingly easy. Until... Bas wasn't going easy anymore. Sebastian heard the plastic of the little steering wheel creaking when he gripped it harder as he was hit with yet another red shell. He was enjoying the game less and less as the day continued on, without him even noticing the passing of time. Usually, he was very aware of where the sun was in the sky, impatiently waiting for the moments he could step outside. In Bas' room, though, staring at a strange box and playing a actual video game, it slipped his mind.

The only thing indicating Sebastian was annoyed was how hard he was gripping the poor controller. Besides that, he was a blank slate. Though, as time went on, cracks began forming in the slate. His eyebrow would twitch upward when he'd get last place again. His teeth would briefly latch onto his bottom lip when Bas would laugh at him. His eyes would narrow for a moment when one of the "computers," as Bas called them, knocked him off the road. By the time night was falling, Bas was grinding his teeth together, his eyebrows furrowed some. He was managing to not outright snarl at the game, though.

Then, he won his first race. Satisfaction and elation coursed through his veins, something that had been long forgotten, and he threw his head back to laugh. "Finally!" he said, slumping back into the bean bag chair, and letting out a breath. "That was..." he trailed off, glancing at Bas, and clearing his throat some. He was almost embarrassed by his outburst, but honestly, that was well-deserved. It felt like it took him quite a few races to finally win a game. "Enjoyable," he finished, a bit late, and looked away. He still felt strange, being around his own kind, expressing himself, learning new things. But, this had truly been... fun. Something that he realized, in that moment, he had quite missed.

Wyatt studied the map handed to him by Father Luca, three spots marked where victims had been found, and a triangle over acres of woods and railroad tracks. Seemed like a likely place a vampire to hide, a weird stranger staying in town just as people started dying would probably draw a lot more attention. His experience with small towns was that it was hard to fly under the radar, there was nothing to do but gossip so anyone new or who didn’t fit in generally became the main subject of said gossip. It usually made hunting in small towns much easier.

“Excellent, Father, I think this is a great place to start.” He said showing the map to Nicole and Lilith. He was more than happy to start their hunt in the woods, it was way less suspicious to see strangers with knives, bows, and guns in the woods than around town and without knowing for sure what they were dealing with here the more weapons they could have the better. Plus he always felt more at home in the woods than he did around civilization, even if it was just a small town. “Shall we head to the woods and see if we can track anything, or I can go alone if there’s other leads you want to follow up on in town?” He offered, addressing the two other hunters.

While Father Luca went to dig something out of a cool-looking chest, Lilith helped herself to another biscuit. Those, plus her coffee, were helping her feel more human on this cold morning. It was also making her feel warmer. She loosened her scarf a little, keeping her jacket closed so her guns wouldn't be noticeable. She wasn't sure how the father would feel if he knew she was packing. She had already cursed in the church. She wasn't going to push it. She didn't want a face full of holy water or to have a Bible hit her in the forehead like a palm.

She scoffed into her coffee at the mention of the woods, eyes glancing up at Father Luce. "Of course it's the woods. It's always the woods." she grumbled, though it was loud enough for the others to hear.

When the map was in Wyatt's hand, Lilith slid up behind him, making some noise so he was aware of it. Hunters had good reflexes, and she didn't want an elbow to the gut. She would spill her coffee, after all. She got on her tiptoes to look over his shoulder at the map, not realizing how close she had gotten. She hummed a little, studying it. She was starting to think this wouldn't be too hard. Usually, small towns had people who were willing to talk about newcomers, or anything strange.

When the map was actually shown to her, she danced a few steps away from Wyatt, getting a better look at it. Lilith grinned at Wyatt's question. "Oh, Wyatt. I ain't lettin' you get away from me that easy. We haven't hunted together in a long while, have we?" she said, but her grin slowly dropped. She sighed, rolling her eyes to the high ceiling. "Though, we would get more done if we split... if we do, I'll miss ya, Wyatt," she dramatically sniffed and dabbed at her eyes, turning away from the other hunter.

Luca had some...demons of his own to face. He had been avoiding this for some time now, but with the hunters in town and everything else going on, he knew he needed to get it done now or never. Father Walter's office seemed colder now. The pictures that lined his desk, his file cabinet, the various other mismatched furniture, they all held a once warm glow. Father George Walter had been perhaps more than just a mentor to Luca. He had helped raised funds to get Luca into America, he helped pay for his school, he gave him a home, and he gave him a chance. He was like family to Luca, perhaps the closest thing he would ever know for the rest of his life.

The young priest wiped his eyes on his sweater sleeve and slowly got to work. The files, papers, and belongings left behind needed to be sorted through.

It took well into the evening. The hunters had mentioned something about a concert they wanted to go to, to investigate and perhaps get to know the townsfolk. They had invited him to come along, but of course Luca turned them down. He was too far down his own emotional rabbit hole, and crowds weren't really his thing anyways.

He pulled open another heavy desk drawer and began sorting through the papers. Bills, notes, documents, and then a manila folder. He pulled it out and opened it, expecting more documents for the church's banking account. But, instead, travel documents, passport papers, plane tickets, and a few photos fell out. Luca's own name popped out at him, and his curiosity peaked. Surely, after all these years, Father Walter hadn't kept these papers? But sure enough, the aging priest's pack rat tendencies to keep any kind of even remotely important paper had prevailed.

Luca thumbed through the papers, then put them in the "shred" pile. He woudldn't need those. His passport was long expired and he was already a legal citizen now. He flipped over the first photo, and the image was haunting. A teenage boy, probably about 18 or so, stared back at him, eyes hallow. He was thin, sickly, and wore what was once a white t-shirt. His feet were bare, despite melting snow on the ground. One side of his face was purple, bruised as though someone had taken to it like a punching bag, and one eye was swollen shut with infection. He felt a little sick looking at the image of what he once was. He wasn't sure he wanted to turn the other photo over now.

But he did. This was one better. The same boy, sitting in a hospital bed with a younger Oma by his side. He was smiling for the camera, his face much less swollen, and was hooked up to a hoard of IVs. Memories flooded back to Luca's mind. He'd never been in a hospital before, and he was terrified. He'd only known Oma for a few days, but he clung to her like she was his birth mother. He'd never been able to trust a single soul since he'd lost his family. He remembered the nurses fussing over him, being so nice because they pitied him. He remembered the doctor coming in and explaining to him that he had a disease that wasn't curable. He remembered Oma crying, and not understanding why.

Luca slid the photos back into the folder. He didn't want them, but he figured he should at least turn them over to the Pearsons. He slowly got back to work, sorting and filing.

Getting out of the house had been a great idea. Kyle couldn't remember the last time they had a family outing. Or a concert in town. He spread the blanket he'd brought onto the concrete ground. The concert was inside the town's coliseum, which was mostly used for rodeos and various sports events. The floor had never been it's best feature. He laid back and enjoyed the music and the opportunity to be out of the house.

Backstage, Miriam was tuning her acoustic guitar. The old beat up instrument was a memento from days long past. She felt a smile creep across her face as she ran a slender finger along the grooves of the rosewood. "We've had a good run, haven't we girl.." Miriam whispered to the guitar as she remembered the first real song she'd composed that felt, real. She had to admit, being in a black leather corset, full length velvet dress, and dolled up while holding a beat up acoustic guitar. She felt a little odd, yet, she was always a little out of place...

Several years ago...

Miriam sat at the corner of the busy little artist district of her town, playing a simple little blues number as pedestrians passed her by. She looked hopeful at her guitar case, which sat open in front of her. Several coins glittered among the soft red plush of the case. She had enough to grab lunch, but she would be going hungry tonight if she didn't get any more tips.

Yet she was happy, she had the music. If the world crumbled around her, which judging from her current financial situation was maybe a few months off. She at least had her music. Her fingers danced along the strings, beginning her next song, it was one her ex always loved hearing. Yet he was like the others, gone when things got hard. She wasn't always the easiest to deal with, her music would always come first. She thought about their final conversation, the argument echoing in her head.

"You're never going to be a real musician, you should go back to school. Nursing, office admin, programmer.."

He made sense, the chance of actually making it as a musician in this life was never easy. She had enough to eat, have a roof, and play, she was okay with that. Why couldn't he?

A soft clicking of her next listener rustled her thoughts back to the situation at hand. A woman stood before her listening, her lacy black dress looked so out of place. She must be a goth, Miriam thought to herself as she continued to play. As she finished her last song, the woman placed several bills in her guitar case. A black lipsticked smile crept across her face as she bowed her head to Miriam.

"You play wonderfully, so sad, but hopeful," the woman spoke softly. Miriam noted her voice had a very soft almost rhythmic tone to her voice.

"Thank you," looking down at the bills, her voice nearly caught in her throat as she realized this was several hundred dollars. "I, you can't, it's just.." The woman placed a finger to her lips as she tapped the guitar.

"You accept this, with my thank you. It's been so long since I've heard music like that. Tell me, why are you confining yourself to hiding in the shadows like this? You could be the stuff of legends..." She grinned mischievously as she gestured to her own outfit. "I sense you want to challenge the world, make them hear your music, like it or not..."

Miriam looked at this woman, drawn in by the hypnotic swap in her voice. "I, goth acts are dimestore around here.." She stammered, "I want to be a serious musician, not some schlock act, no offense.." She said sheepishly. The woman sat beside her, Miriam noticed her pale skin was like, model level pale. She must have either had one heck of a sunscreen or never went out until the sun went down.

The mysterious woman spoke again, "I want to make you an offer." She spoke quietly as she watched the rest of the pedestrians walk past. "If I said right here, you could produce an album, and be anyone you want. Who would you be?" Miriam looked at the woman incredulously, her suspicion of a prank starting to make her angry. Maybe her ex really wanted to mess with her now?

Yet something about the confidence of this woman, drew her in like a moth to a flame.

"I want to do an album, tell a story, love, loss, chasing the mistress of music and challenging her to become my ally.." Miriam muttered to herself. She felt stupid talking about what she really wanted, she had a production budget, she could whip up some top forty garbage and maybe make a few bucks..but something about telling this story through music felt, right? The woman looked at her, almost like she was trying to peer something even Miriam wasn't sure was really there.

"Done," she smiled. "I want you to make your album about this dark angel of music." Blinking as she tried to catch her breath, this woman drew forth a white business card from her purse. She scribbled a number on the back of the card, then passing the card to Miriam. "I believe you have something interesting, I want to see where you go. Call this number tomorrow, if you know others who can help your dream. Tell them you have a patron who wants to see where you will go. I will come to you in one months time. Do not disappoint me little one." She placed a small roll of bills in Miriam's suitcase. "Please get a good meal and a good nights rest. My assistant tomorrow will help you with lodgings and your day to day needs tomorrow." The woman stood once more, Miriam reached a hand out to grab her arm.

"I...I don't know what to say," The woman smiled, the first real warm smile she felt from this visitor.

"Say nothing, but tell me your thoughts through your music." With that, she walked away. Miriam looked at the white card in her hand. The number was carefully written, but the name above caught her attention.

Marianne

"Miriam!" Donnie, the lead guitarist shouted, rousing her from her daydream. "We got press, and a few q and a's before showtime!"

"Coming!" With that, Miriam quickly got to her feet and met Donnie for the press meeting.

Meanwhile, Marianne sat with the other kindred as the crowd began to gather. Vampires, for the most part drew their life from blood. Yet Marianne was old, much older than many of her kind. She drew upon inspiration, hope, love, admiration, these fed her just as well as blood. Her eyes glittered as she looked to the others.

"Miriam, was one of my favorite little projects from this era. I hope you all enjoy." She smiled pleasantly to the others.
