Sorcha frowns and crosses her arms. “Khalida gave him plenty of opportunities to show that side of him.”

Asa shrugs. “Maybe, maybe not. Does it matter? He hurts, he’s going to get hurt.”

‘Good.’ Layla’s eyes widen when she sees that Shay’s chain is bloody. “What in hell happened up there?!”

Khalida’s stone cold face doesn’t shift. “You deserve the hole in your heart. I hope whatever ‘gift’ your mother gave you is the curse I know it to be.” She turns back to her work without a glance at him, and she returns to work. “Yes, Nic. I’ll see you tomorrow. I can’t wait.”

Sorcha huffs and clenches her fist. “I need to punch something.” She leaves for the gym and works with a dummy for hours.

Asa goes to the kitchen to make another culinary monster.

Layla shakes her head slightly, crossing her arms. “It does matter. It matters to me. I get it if it’s something you can’t help but do, but I’m not going to let you risk your humanity in the process.”

Khalida sighs and rubs her face wearily when she finishes, and when he leaves, she collapses into a near-silent fit of sobbing. She falls asleep, and as she was sitting in shadows, she unconsciously travels to shadows by her bed.

Sorcha sees red as she fights.

Asa sits by Vic. “What’s that silver box and why does it keep changing?”

Layla sighs heavily shrugs. “Because I do. I know what it’s like to be treated like, to feel like a monster because of something beyond your control. I’m not going to let this,” she rattles the chain, “take your human away. Just like I didn’t let this,” she knocks on her left, prosthetic arm, “take my human away.”
