BlackBerry frowned a little as the others made several very good points against splitting up; everyone knew the trope and its often very real, and just as often very gorey, end.

“Well, it was an idea to put to the table.” He mumbled, good naturedly, watching the option sink beneath the proverbial tide.

Maritas offer to escort him away from the township touched a still raw nerve from his embarrassment earlier in the day. He stared at her for a moment, finding himself caught between betrayed and insulted. BlackBerry wasn't about to let this, the first lead in months that might actually lead to something useful, be taken away from him out of some misplaced concern. By the Gods! Fighting for his life wasn't entirely unfamiliar territory to him.

"Ha!" His laugh was like a bark, and only a little bit forced. "And miss out on such a wild adventure? Surely you jest!"

A few more chuckles were forced out before he regained his composure.

"While I appreciate the concern, it is unwarranted." He flashed a confident, toothy grin. "I've handled a few ruffians and unsavory types before. Admittedly, not Were-Rats though. That, that is new. But as they say, ‘There is a first time for everything’. So for now I shall accompany you to meet this Mr. Mallard, as originally planned, and I'll stay outside to keep watch for any trouble."

Turning round to Kosara he added in an attempt to reassure her worries. "With that, trying to regroup isn't an issue, should trouble arise."

He made a mental note to ask about any specific trouble he should look out for once he and the others were outside. Already, he had an inkling the local law enforcers weren’t the trustworthy type, if what the others had said was true, and any other were-rats would hopefully be easy to spot…

“And, it’s ‘BlackBerry’, though I do understand the confusion.” He motioned to himself. Should he explain the reason? Not, best not get side tracked any further. He waved away the issue. “Moving on; A gut feeling, however, might not be the worst thing to go on."

Shrugging at Maritas suggestion. It was better than anything he had. "Where is the municipal building?"

BlackBerry shifted restless in his seat finding all this sitting around and talking…not boring but certainly not the most interesting thing in the world. He desperately needed something to do.

"So…when would be the best time to head off then?" His eyes again zipped over to the window. “The rain looks to be lessening now.”

He said, just in time for Lady Katheryn to mention making her way to their camp.

”Good Gracious, I hope you haven’t camped out too far from here.” He said with an almost incredulous look. ”If it’s any consolation I don’t believe it was raining too hard, so hopefully your things are still in decent condition. Do you need a hand at all?”

Secretly, BlackBerry hoped she would say no. It had been bad enough trudging through the rain across the water slick cobbles and over muddy rivulettes running down the street to the Open house, so gods knew how bad it would be outside the town gates and off the beaten path. He supposed it was just as well though the party had somewhere to stay given Roberts sudden…threat? Yes it was definitely a threat. Lots of mixed signals coming from that guy just now.

Victoria Belmont
Half-Elf, Bard, Level 3
HP: 23 / 23 Armor Class: 15 Conditions: N/A
Location: Neil & Bob's Public House
Action: N/A
Bonus Action: N/A

The rain was slowing. This signaled the greater possibility that something was about to transpire. Not in a more nefarious manner (though this was still on the table), but that they would shift away from merely conducting an investigation and become more proactive in their appointed task. Then again, technically, their task was to investigate what the problem was and they had done that. If they had a little evidence to show Gregory then they might be able to get the full force of the soldiery back at Fort Darenby involved. If memory served, they might just have it in their possession, too.

Then a thought hit. The Sheriff's aide had said that he had gone and did not know when he would be back, not to mention that he didn't expect an update for about a week. Gregory was expecting this to be a much longer affair. He might not be back at the Fort for some time. Even if he was present, it was a half day journey there, and a half day back, not accounting for the time to rally and mobilize soldiers.

Another, less pessimistic idea came to mind immediately following - taking their leave would mean that she would not witness the end of the story here. No recording acts of heroism. No uncovering secrets. It would mean that she couldn't increase her reputation remotely as much, either, nor could she pen the song of this tale to relate elsewhere, except as secondhand. And Gods forfend, but if one of her teammates fell in glorious struggle against villainy, who might be there to attend to their post-life needs?

No, Victoria had to stick around. She was glassy-eyed and excited about it. Her heart picked up its pace a little in anticipation for what was about to come next. It wasn't a sudden overcoming of altruism and/or heroism as this wasn't really her style, but it was motivation enough. Her first lively words came in response to Kathryn, positively dripping with optimism, "I agree! I should like to get moving; it looks like an excellent time for it. I wonder though, if others might feel the same way." The last part came out hinting an implication of danger, but with no less enthusiasm. She seemed to be enjoying this, at least in part. "Moreover, I believe that expedience is as firm an ally as subtlety."

Victoria adjusted the brim of her hat, now in her hands, and temporarily set it on the table in front of her. She smiled broadly and nimbly twirled her arms into her slim, purple coat, quickly fastening it closed, and took to Kathryn's example by leaving her own coin on the table. Her violin, still in its strapped case, found its way onto her back and her hat back into her hands. She then moved to stand by the door alongside her colleague. "Not as important as armament," she confided in her very tall companion, "but I wouldn't mind collecting my cloak from camp." A wink and a smile followed as she rested her hand upon the hilt of her sword, motioning to the door. "I shudder to think what this weather will continue to do to my hair without a more rugged covering."

“That we can do!” Kosara energetically pipped in when Marita brought up the rest standing good old vigil outside the silversmith and be on the look out for evil doers and other general miscreants that might or might not be plotting sneaky schenanigans that bring about evil intent and general annoyances and grief! Like certain name confused constable that might or might not be in on the evil schemes. Then again he could just be a mean old man who is mean and is trying to stop the evil schemes, but one cannot be too certain until there are enough clues and facts established. So far Kosara could very well count Mr Cloverwish, Cavefish, Cavendish or whatever his name is, into the evil being plotted. On that note as the cleric mentioned the Municipal building as the rat nest, Naisha let out an energetic nod of sorts. It would make sense. That or it was locked down just on the purpose of stopping infiltrators from said nest. Again needed more facts to make decision. Better operate under the assumption that both were true!

“Yes, sir!” The tiefling exclaimed to Robert’s statement and query! He couldn’t be seen as housing them so that much was alright! Besides they did make a mean breakfast… well lunch here! Having their noon meals here was good enough, especially with the hayloft as a very good sneaky accommodations that allowed them to spy on the happenings outside.

“I got everything I need with myself, Kathryn.” Kosara stated, patting her well cared for and used traveling bag that was very much filled to near capacity in very organized manner as to be able to store as much as possible. Besides her most useful tools were magic related and her ability to use said magic. What’s more with her magical appearing sword she was gonna fare well enough and had options if it came to close up fights. Celestial blasts for the far and heroic scimitar to the gut for the melee. Seeing the others paying, she quickly left the coin for her lunch on the table by her plates.

With them getting outside at least the rain appeared to be lessening for the time being. She heard V mentioning her cloak.” You know I should probably get a cloak too, one with a hood!” She commented as she got out by the others.” Or at least a hat not too dissimilar to your own to protect my head!” Kosara stated, noting that yes the rain and weather wasn’t too good for one’s hair. Though she did somewhat enjoy it. Back home there wasn’t really rain like this. Even if it left her rather cold due the season.” Though a cloak might be the best choice because of my long hair and braid. I could keep it under it while a hat wouldn’t protect my braid.”

“Might have to go shopping after this adventure is done.” She mused to herself and looked around in a bit of a casual or maybe even distracted manner as she scanned the surroundings for anything of note to her mind. She didn’t see anything really so that was good! Unless there was something hiding in plain view that was way better of hiding than her seeing it. It could happen, though she still wondered how it was possible at times.

Kathryn was glad to see that the party, Blackberry included with in were ready to finish this. People were in danger, and without the help of local law it left few who may be able to solve this. Solve and fix it. Blackberry joining along would be more help for their party as she worried that no matter how much she tried, they would be facing a rather difficult conflict of force. To what extent, she was unsure. But the help was appreciated. It seemed the others were also in favor of following up with the Municipal building. Should their rather antagonistic men in uniform be connected to everything going on, they needed to know for sure before anything could be done. That being sharing those details, or dealing with it themselves. Kathryn gave Blackberry a reassuring smile as he spoke up about how far it may be. "It's not far at all, don't ya worry. And the supplies are safe." She wasn't sure how the rest of the party would feel about taking the dragonborn to the hideout, but she hoped they wouldn't mind. Kathryn did find Victoria's urge for exciting danger rather intriguing. She implied great dangers, and they were legitimate concerns. But they seemed not to worry her. She smiled as Victoria met up at the door with her and gave her nod at her wink. "I'm sure it'll serve us very well. A weapon's only a tool in the right hands." She heard of stories of things bards could do with their abilities and magical tools. She had no idea how many were true, or how many of the other stories about bards were true, but she was glad to have the bard by her side. "I'll make sure you don't get shot this time." Kathryn said in a tone mixed between teasing, and apologetic.

To also protect herself from the rain, Kathryn brought her helmet back on, though this time when she put the buckle together it wasn't fully latched. If she expected a fight she could buckle it back up to make sure it stayed in place to be fully effective. Stepping outside though the battered bucket she called a helm made it difficult to look about, the rain making it worse. She hoped that they weren't followed, and that no one was waiting for them. Despite Kosara being prepared with all she needed, she was first out the door to return to camp. The tiefling woman did mention shopping, which anything that didn't involve the tension of everything with this quest sounded wonderful. A good meal without the concern of being jumped, a nice shopping spree, a chance to properly work out would also be nice if she had the gear for that. A chance to get to know her new partners without the pressure that every stop they took risked more people missing. But they were getting close, she could feel it! She just hoped it was for the better.

She noticed Kosara looking about, and if she saw something she didn't say anything. Kathryn debated going around the block to throw off anyone waiting for them. But it was just as likely for someone who was looking for them to spot them if they left the area. "Let's get going. We will wanna be fast, and be out even faster." Kathryn walked for a bit, stopping a little ways past the barn but not entering. Stopping to look around again as if trying to spot something. But was instead keeping watch with intentions of being the last to enter, to make sure that everyone else got in safely before she decided to follow in.

"The Municipal Building is on the North side of town," she answered Blackberry, "It's quite difficult to miss. We would have to go out of our way to show you, however." With the Dragonborn's lingering question handled she turned to respond to Robert.

"Everyone here has been so kind to us already, I'd rather not ask anything further of you if I could help it." Marita stood up from the table and took the note from Robert. She still had her things, so there was naught for her to collect and get ready. She read over it quickly before folding it in half and tucking it away where it would hopefully remain safe. Everyone else seemed raring to go now, hopefully they would be able to maintain this momentum and resolve the case before the situation could worsen.

The cleric's eyes briefly flickered over to the gold coin she had put down earlier. She had used it as a cover for an expedient exit from the public house, The situation had changed and she was certain that nobody would judge her if she took back her money and left a more suitable payment for the food and drink they had been provided with. However, Marita couldn't take it back. She wouldn't be able to explain it to anyone else if they asked her about it. It was a matter of principle, but it didn't tie into her faith and even if there was another member of the church of Pholtus present, Marita wasn't entirely sure they would understand either. But she had put it down, so she was committed to that action. She couldn't take it back, much in the same way one could not unsever a rope.

With one last glance at the faces of the overworked staff of the Public House, Marita left praying that things would remain as they were by the time they returned. With the rain starting to let up, they needed to get going. Marita adjusted her pace, quickly making her way into the Hayloft. If they were being followed, they'd be giving way where they were holed up, but at this stage in the game, these were just the risks they had to take. They likely weren't going to leave town, so Marita would leave the majority of her travel supplies where they were. No need to lug them around. But now that the possibility of physical danger felt more tangible than ever, she would equip her weapons and shield. Altogether she was done "resupplying" in under a minute, so unless something came up, she would wait by the door for the others to finish up.

Weather: It is cool but not cold in the Township of Avonshire, or so would say the locals. The rain worked wonders in giving the ambient temperature more of a bite than probably anyone felt was comfortable. The intensity of the rain had indeed lessened, making short trips respectably more tolerable than a hour earlier. All the same, it's best to hang one's cloaks about them with care and gird one's feet with stout boots like good little adventurers, lest one catch a case of the sniffles.

Time: It is afternoon. One might surmise that it is late afternoon, judging by the area of the sky that is slightly less dark than the rest, but this is still up for some debate as the sky otherwise seems a wet, uniform grey.

Ambience: The rain had slowed. How long that may last was then unknown. All that was known was that there was window of time with which to get tasks handled. One could clearly see now why the main thoroughfares have such an ample drainage system, being so near to water - the heavier rain from before could be witnessed in the form of small streams, coursing down either side of the cobblestone streets even as inlet drains channeled it down and away.

As the group exited the Hayloft, an astute observer might have seen Robert closing one of the shuttered windows to his establishment again. He seemed to intentionally look away from the party as they made their egress from the loft but gave them a knowing nod after the door closed for the last time. Plausible deniability was ever a useful thing.

The once busy streets, full of life, laughter, and commerce, stood now empty. The tension in town was almost as palpable as the weather itself. Everyone knew that many had fled this town. Many more remained, however. Where else did they have to go? Their presence was felt just behind windows and walls of every building that the party passed on their way north and east to the locked-up establishment of Mr. Jacques Mallard, resident silversmith of the Avonshire Township.

*****

This building stood apart from the others around it. While other businesses at least bore the appearance of a welcoming environment, this one was boarded up solidly. The slimmest of cracks between the boards keeping the windows secure betrayed the same diffuse, orange light as before, but only from a very close proximity. Upon this visit, however, one could hear a soft metallic tapping from within. A series of three steps lead up to this slightly raised building, terminating in front of a stout-looking, metal bound door. It is a place where precious metals are worked, after all; security was a factor in its construction. Overall, the feel of this place did not instill open invitation.

Just up the street from this place was the Bed & Breakfast which Cecily and Lizbeth chose for their lodging. One could plainly see the building, though the sign was a little obscured from this angle. It had curtains drawn and appeared to be doing a good impression of being otherwise nondescript.

For Kathryn and Kosara, this was deja vu. Others in the party had been through this area, probably passing it a couple of times during their time in town. Now, it stood as the focus in everyone's field of vision.

BlackBerry nodded to Maritas answer to his question. It was fair enough really if it was going to take them out of their way. He grabbed his bag as the others too gathered their things.

"Thank you kindly for the wonderful meal. Take care!"

BlackBerry followed the others out of the Open house, and cast a glance left and right but saw nothing, not even the occasional figure drenched or otherwise hiding from the rain. It was a shocking contrast to the crowds that had filled the streets yesterday and made BlackBerry pull his shoulders up around himself.

"I would recommend getting something made of hide, or the like." He added to the party's talk on cloaks and hats. "Simple wool or cotton is enough for the most part, but as a defense against the rain they leave much to be desired, unfortunately."

Pulling the fabric of his scarf back over his head, BlackBerry immediately turned to his right trying to hide away from the remaining drizzle, as much as he could. Despite his best attempts, the rain found him and left damp patches on his shoulders and head, almost as if trying to confirm his advice.

"I think I shall buy a rugged cloak also, when the chance arises." BlackBerry muttered to himself, and not for the first time making that same.mental note.

"How long should they take to gather their belongings, do you think?" He asked Kosara.

He expected to see the others wander down the street and off to their camp. But instead he turned to see Lady Kathryn and Marita enter a building on the street opposite them. BlackBerry frowned in confusion for a moment before remembering Marita had mentioned herself and the group were staying in a Hayloft.

Evidently, Lady Kathryn had lied about the camp and a scowl flickered across his face. Then he remembered Marita had mentioned she and the others were staying in a Hayloft.

"'Not very far' indeed." He muttered, scuttling over to join the rest.

BlackBerry followed the others towards a vaguely familiar street, thinking he may have passed through it once or twice during his stay. A feeling of restlessness nagged at him. While the warmth and food had settled his nerves for the most part, the knowledge of a nearby were-rat horde (Nest? Troop?) had him looking over his shoulder and shooting glances at shadows.

"Ah is this the one?." He commented upon spotting the silversmith sign, and then saw the state it was in.

He walked up smoothly to the building to investigate the meager signs of life and light coming through between the boards that had been put up. The thought to put his eyes to the boards and peer in cropped up, but heeding Robert's advice BlackBerry resisted; for one, it was rude to look through someone else's window, and two he didn't want to scare the poor silversmith if he was spotted. Instead he simply put his hand on the nearest board, just to confirm it was there, and felt the sturdy material now slick with water. Everything about the building said only two words to BlackBerry: "GO AWAY"

"I must say it doesn't look terribly inviting. Is it even open?" He motioned his head towards the door.

Between going into a boarded up building or hiding out in the rain, he couldn't quite decide what was the worst option.

"Regardless, I shall wait out here as discussed. Best not to scare the poor man." He looked here and there again trying to find even a shred of dry land to hide in.

BlackBerry couldn't help also turning his own gaze vaguely northwards. The curtain of rain and the squat buildings all around hid the Municipal Building from sight, not that he knew what to look for or what it looked like, but he wanted to know where it was at the very least. Even he could feel anxiety pouring out of every closed door and empty window staring blindly at him, a feeling that had pervaded just under the surface of everything during his time in Avonshire, and now he knew the reason for it. The idea of scuttling off to investigate tempted him and left a gleam in his eye.

Victoria Belmont
Half-Elf, Bard, Level 3
HP: 23 / 23 Armor Class: 15 Conditions: N/A
Location: Hayloft -> Silversmith's, exterior
Action: N/A
Bonus Action: Morty
Reaction: N/A

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

It was times like this that Victoria wished she had some sort of raincoat for her animated companion, Morty. Having just gotten the smoky, meaty guy tidy and dry, she now had to bring him back out into the elements. The tireless boar was ever the trooper, even if it didn't exactly have a choice in the matter. In any case, the soulless hunk of cured meat and bone followed with jerky diligence as Victoria crossed the street diagonally to their temporary abode. Victoria had her own, more mundane methods of combating the elements and keeping her gear in good condition, even if she didn't mind relying on multiple uses of Prestidigitation to cover for lapses in care and upkeep. Her violin, however, was another story.

The strangely invigorated Bard took note of Kosara's declarations of intent concerning things close to her own heart - clothing and visiting stores. Cliched? Yes. But she was a person whose non-adventuring career pivoted around public appearance and the ability to impress a crowd. Style was important. "My dear, that hat of mine is not the most suitable for heavy rain, but I should think you would look just lovely in one nonetheless. Perhaps if we reach someplace more cosmopolitan, I would treasure the opportunity to help you pick out a decent hat of your own. Bespoke, I imagine, to account for your lovely ah..." Words were selected with the intent of not making Kosara uncomfortable as Victoria continued with a flattering smile, "...lovely cranial accessories." Graceful gesture on her part implied that her subject was Kosara's horns. "I would rather enjoy a shopping trip after the book closes on this. Darenby had a couple of good merchants I wouldn't mind visiting again. Oh, and almost anywhere on the coast..."

Victoria's thoughts of places more urban and the goods to be acquired there trailed off as they entered the Hayloft. She made quick work of acquiring her charcoal colored cloak, wrapping it about her and pulling the hood up, the action showing a brief glimpse of sheer, purple lining within. She adjusted the strap on her violin so that it hung at her side rather than her back - easier reach and less bulky if one had to move quickly - and debated going into her travel chest for additional weapons or goods. The decision was quickly reached that she was not the type to need a ton of arms and that her best weapon was her connection to the threads and notes magic around her. A good rapier never hindered matters, either. No, that was all she needed, Morty was good to go as well, and she needed to continue forward, now a little more comfortable in the weather.

Kathryn had made reference to the injury sustained during the tussle with Goblins, be it with some tact and complexity of emotion. While it was appreciated, she felt the need to wave it off for reasons both practical and of morale. Second guessing one's self and feeling doubt was a dangerous mindset to be in if walking into a potentially perilous situation. "We were all still figuring ourselves out. As a group, I mean to say. Let us not dwell on it further." She flashed a small smile and seemed settled on the matter.

The walk to the silversmith's place felt like it took longer than it actually did. Nerves, possibly. She was a little anxious to get into things proper. All the same, Victoria was glad that the group had all decided to come along on this. Even the new Dragonborn, though she wasn't sure what stake he had in this aside from the novelty of a mystery and a little adventure. It was reason enough, she supposed. The rain wasn't too intolerable and the drainage system in town looked to be doing a respectable job, so they weren't getting their feet soaked at the very least. But the environment that just a number of hours ago was festive and lively, full of cheer and celebration (admittedly with an undertone of something sinister, but we can't have everything, right?) was now grim and empty, even though the town had obviously not vacated. This put Victoria's mind at an unease. Expected, but not appreciated. When they actually approached the building of Monsieur Jacques Mallard, a worried look came over her. "Wait, I don't recall grabbing the paper. Did anyone get the note?" She was willing to cold-read the guy on the spot to try to persuade him to trust them, but really hoped it wasn't necessary.

Morty mostly followed along under silent mental command, expressing its nonexistent feelings on the circumstances by staring straight ahead, motionless unless called upon to do otherwise.

Kathryn was last to step into the Hayloft, making sure everyone else got in first and to cover their entry. "Welcome to Camp Blackberry." Kathryn said with a shy, almost apologetic tone. She had been coy with her description of their hideout sure, but it's not like she had poor reasons too. Plus their living situation at the moment was very comparable to camping. Only they had a wooden wall and roof instead of a tent. Once inside, Kathryn went about collecting what little else she may have needed. Though she was already fully armed and armored. She grabbed the Goblin note from Hugh's things. She was determined to know how that fit into everything. Too much was bugging her and she lacked so many answers and she was worried what this note may offer once translated. If it turned out to be nothing once translated, she would feel like a fool for thinking so much of it. She did find it odd that she had faced Goblins several times in her life, though didn't speak an ounce of their language. How many had she killed without being able to even offer them a chance to properly surrender, or learn about them before wiping the floor with them. She figured that would be something to look at some other time. The ones they faced before were without a doubt evil, but she wondered about others. Whoever wrote the note though, paid for the weapons, and paid the goblins, needed to be discovered. As well she made sure to grab her pack, loaded with water, rope, torches, and meals to last herself upwards of 10 days. For a human woman of more traditional size, and who wasn't maintaining a comparable muscle mass it may have lasted longer. But if the party did find themselves isolated, it would be food for them for a few days too. Then there were some nets, meals of fire. Pretty much the only thing she left behind were her fine clothes, and any other spare clothes she had shy of socks.

Then she looked over at the pile of loot from the goblins, much of it collected by Hugh, and even that much had been gone through by other party members. Now missing the better of her two hand axes, she walked over and against that little voice that told her looting was wrong, she rummaged through some of the weapons in play. Grabbing a short bow that in her hands almost seemed comically small. Though bows and the like were not common for her usage, she did know how to use one rather well. She had learned when she lived back in her keep, and her training for such had ended when she went on the road with Ser Lucas. She then grabbed herself a dagger and attached it to her belt. Though she was carrying a lot more gear now, it wasn't much compared to what she could handle. Victoria's followup to Kathryn saying she wouldn't let her get struck like that again was reassuring. "We're making good progress, hoping at the rate we're going we'll have some of this teamwork stuff figured out by he time we have to worry about that stuff again." Kathryn said in an almost joking manner. But she was determined to do better this time. She took the mini pouch she accessed via the gap in her armor under her armpit and took it out. Inside the original letter sat. The one originally meant for Ser Lucas. And Kathryn did her best to slide the new note in with it. She slide it back into place. Though not the most hidden, it felt more secure there then in her pack.

When she stepped outside with the rest of the party, she caught Robert's attention. He knew now, how much he could avoid saying was another thing. But he seemed like he would do what he could to keep working with them. The walk was easy enough, but Kathryn figured now was as good a time as any to talk to Marita. She flagged her down a bit subtly, and begin walking behind the group a ways to keep out of earshot. Once the two were separated Kathryn spoke in a hushed tone. "I think we were meant to find those goblins. I think they were intentionally placed in our path, so we would find them, and we would deal with them quickly and effectively. I... I don't have proof. But between the fact that they were hired for something, in a region where goblin attacks are near unheard of. And the second group of people they come across on the road connecting two population centers happens to be the group hired to take out an unheard of goblin problem? It made our story rather fool proof. And they were all armed with brand new, high quality weapons. At least by regional standards. And mass produced ones at that. Someone, wanted us to deal with that specific goblin problem." She couldn't commit to the idea it was the Sheriff. But maybe someone else who knew the whole story? Or maybe it was just a huge coincidence. The way she saw it, Marita seemed like one of the more logical members of their group. She figured Marita would realistically look at the situation and determine if it had some validity to it, or call Kathryn out for being an ignorant noble woman who's understanding of the world still needed work. Either way it would put some rest to Kathryn's mind on the situation.

Arriving at the Silver Smith Kathryn kept some distance. She didn't want to get spotted through the window and blow the party's one chance to try and fix things up. Looking down at the bed and breakfast, Kathryn wondered how Cecily and Lizbeth were doing. She hoped they were safe, and if given the chance she would love to go check on them on their way through. But she also didn't want to risk getting them into danger, or leaving her party unprotected. If she had the chance, she would check on them on the way out. But she didn't want to draw unwanted attention to them if she could avoid it. And she wanted to make sure outside was still safe for her team.

Marita's face was more dour than usual as the group left the Hayloft. There was naught left to do but stew in the anticipation of the inevitable confrontation as they made their way to the silversmith. Or at least, that's what she thought before she saw Kathryn motion over for her to speak in private. She gave everyone a quick 'wait for a moment' before going along with the much taller woman to hear her out.

"There is much out of the ordinary going on in this region, but it's unwise to believe all threads intertwine. Not even counting matters such as the fake letters, I've noticed at least a few oddities that appear unrelated to the matter at hand. Attributing everything queer to the machinations of outside sources could easily lead you down a rabbit hole of paranoia. Even if what you say is true, as far as we're aware, that has no bearing on where we are so it can be ignored until it is. There's a guideline you're taught early on when performing an inquisition: Hunting down false lead is more damaging than taking no action at all." That was all she had to say on the matter. They didn't have the time to stand around and discuss this outside matter, so after she said her piece, she turned to rejoin the group.

"From what I gather it isn't open, merely that our silversmith has holed himself up in here. And yes, I grabbed the note." She looked at the others. Although Victoria was the socialite of the group, she wasn't initiating the encounter. Well, if she wasn't going to do it, it was up to Marita. She thought for a moment on how to approach the situation. Mallard was jumpy and paranoid, so she needed to avoid escalating things needlessly. If she were a softer woman perhaps she would consider talking more softly and attempting to appear as nonthreatening as possible from the outset. Briefly the idea that she could force him to comply using her Voice passed through her head, but she immediately discarded it for obvious reasons. The cleric took another look at herself and the others. Well if there was one way to raise the stakes at a glance, it would be showing up looking ready for a fight. Although it was irritating to be rid of them immediately after picking them up, Marita took off her shield and mace and gently set them against the wall. If it were not such a hassle and involved getting partially undressed, she would have removed her armor as well.

"Look after my things while we're gone. Victoria, you might want to disarm as well." Marita cracked her knuckles before striding over to the front door. She rapped her knuckles against the door thrice before speaking in the even, confident voice of a woman of Law.

"Mr. Mallard, Robert sent us here to pick up his package." She produced the note the pub owner had written for them and knelt down, sliding it under the door while doing her best to keep it from getting wet. If the ground was too soaked to do be able to do that with the paper in tact, she would simply keep it in hand to hand over if/when the smith opened the door.

“ I would love to do so too, V! And you can call them horns! I like my horns! Make me feel a bit like grandpa though he only has 1 and his is golden. And if we ever go South, I would love to help you pick some suitable stage outfits from my homelands, if for nothing else but for making nice memories and souvenirs!” She stated sagely as she heard V’s words on the topic of getting to go shopping for new garments and accessories. Kosara didn’t have much chances to do so, since most of what she would wear or would be bought to wear when younger was from traveling merchants who specially visited the oasis just for that purpose. She and her sisters there more or less had all their silken, transparent or near transparent clothes from the same tailors and merchants.

The trek to the silversmith didn’t take too long a time this turn around, mostly because they actually knew exactly how to get here now. Though it was a lot better when it came to the weather in difference to their journey from |the Honey Barn to the tavern where they had lunch. The rain lessening made everything a lot better, though it was still quite chilly. Now Kosara was really realizing why people this far north wore more clothing and thicker and more protective ones at that. Leather cloaks or something would be a great boon. Or at least something to keep covered from the rain.

The street around the silversmith didn’t look different, nothing that stuck out to the casual glance when they arrived. She pondered if the sheriff… constable? Yes Constable, had the place under watch just in case they visited, she wasn’t sure if he knew their interest here, but one never knew. There could have been words that reached him about the earlier event of their improptu musical performance on his door. That was a fun thing she was almost tempted to repeat, but decided not to and to leave the interractions with him to V and Marita. Mentioning the Cleric, Kosara turned to her as she was disarming herself to go talk with the map.” Alright, Marita. I will watch over them like a hawk! Well… I think that was the saying!”

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Weather: Even though the rain is relatively lighter than it was an hour past, it will still drench one if they spend an appreciable amount of time out in it. Cloaks, coats, and hats are one's friends now, probably more than ever.

Time: It is afternoon. A handful of minutes have passed since the group left out of the Hayloft/Public House area, so not a lot has changed there. Just enough time for a mild to moderate conversation before the next destination was reached.

Ambience: The rain was lighter but had by no means stopped. The sky is still dark, the streets are still steadily draining away water even as it continues to be replaced, and the citizenry of Avonshire were nowhere in open view. Banners which crossed the streets and festival decorations still hung, flapping aimlessly in the wet wind with no small touch of irony; celebratory markers for Harvestide which, up until a handful of hours ago, oversaw one of the great annual celebrations of the region.

Yet somehow, the scent of smoke and pork could still be detected faintly on the irregular wind. Some people couldn't be kept from their craft, it seemed, no matter the weather or potential danger looming about them.

Despite all of the lovely ambience, sights, smells, and movement about the general area of the Silversmith's shop, things seem rather still and tense, like the Township was holding its breath, waiting to finally exhale and take in a new breath.

*****

The sign on the front door clearly read "Closed For Festival", though the party was fully aware that it was there purely to shoo regular business away. It looked slightly off-center from the last time that it was viewed, as if it had been removed and placed back in the interim. There was a short series of steps leading up to the door with a small landing, which lay underneath an equally small awning that gave some protection from the rain. As a result, the letter was able to be slipped underneath the door without worry of it becoming damp.

From inside, a heavy thump sounded from upon the boards that Baronfjord was so intently attempting to listen through, as if struck from the inside by something heavy. From inside the building, a loud, agitated voice could be heard growling something unintelligible. Regardless of what was said, it looks like the proverbial jig is up.

But that wasn't the only percussive wooden sound to come from inside the building in front of them. A pause, seemingly lengthy, occurred after the last corner of the paper disappeared from sight, taken up from the other side of the door. The muffled voice sounded again, this time easier to make out by virtue of proximity. "Uh huh. We'll see about that," it intoned, as the sound of something heavy slid off of the door, followed by a thunk as the door hit the floor on the other side of the metal-bound point of entrance.

At this time an event familiar to Kosara and Kathryn occurred. "BACK UP A STEP." came the voice again, loud enough to be heard clearly and enunciated fully to minimize any mistake on the part of the listener. The door heaved open just a crack, allowing a dim orange light to be viewed from the outside though the source of the illumination was not in direct view. A tall humanoid form blocked enough of the light to form a silhouette, and a voice issued from this form with more clarity than before. "If he sent you, you know what I'm going to do next. Come inside slow, and know that you have a crossbow on you." He steps back to accommodate entry.

When one enters the building, they are greeted by warmth greater than that of the Public House the party had just left, if with stuffier air. The lighting is dimmer, but once one's eyes adjust, adequate. True to his word, a man stands before you with a loaded, light crossbow, his hair and eyes a bit wild. The source of the orange glow was now visble - to one side of the open shop interior was a small pot forge containing a fair amount of molten metal, under which rested a flameless heat source, putting off light as a hot bar of forge-steel might. The rest of the shop did little to resemble a silversmith's, except for a number of knick-knacks on a table near the front door. The shelves along the walls were mostly barren, and the main counter had upon it a few weapons. Daggers, a spear, and another crossbow. Behind the counter sat a well made couch, upon which was discarded a blanket and couple of pillows that did not match the furniture, themselves. There were other things here, scattered about almost haphazardly; snatches of writings and various items that looked more at home in an alchemist's or talismonger's shop than one who works jewelry and keepsakes.

"Close the door behind you. There's a storage box near you there. On top of that box is a..." he paused for a second, "...a ring and a bracelet chain. Each of you take one and hold it to your tongue for a moment, and let me see you do it. THEN PUT THEM BACK. It used to be two rings until some eight-foot-tall tart ran off with one of them." He tilted his head to the side slightly to see beyond his door and those gathered beyond it. "HEY!"

BlackBerry couldn't blame Mr Mallard for wanting to hole himself up and hide away from it all. The weather itself was ghastly enough for him to want to do the same. His hand fell down to the sword sort sheathed at his hip, the sheathe had long since lost its original colour and was now a very scuffed and dirty brown. The sword it contained was in a similar state but BlackBerry was thankful to have it anyway for the reassurance its weight on his hip gave him, and the silent warning it sent to any would-be-assailants.

BlackBerry watched Marita deposit her weapons on the cobbles and thought for a moment to pick them up and put them in the pigs little wagon for safety away from the dangers of the cold and damp. But, a quick glance confirmed that it didn't have its wagon, so the idea was washed away.

"This is one very well trained pig." BlackBerry marvelled at the swine standing diligently to attention. "I do wish the animals back home were half as well behaved."

Oddly the pig was incredibly well trained and barely seemed to move at all or even pay BlackBerry even the slightest bit of attention. Then there were the wrappings covering the animal from head to hoof. He frowned at the animal now feeling more unnerved by it than impressed, wondering if he should ask about it.

As Marita made their presence known something changed suddenly and BlackBerry cocked his head to the side trying to figure what it was. Then a voice came from inside, not loud enough to know if or what was said. He couldn't hear anything, but instead it was the sudden lack of noise that had caught his attention; the steady sound of metal being struck that had been hiding quietly beneath the whispering of rain and the party's general movement, that only its sudden disappearance had alerted him it had even been there and his mind scrambled through his memory to piece it all together again.

Why had it been so quiet?

BlackBerry held up a finger signalling for quiet as he tried to listen further. With bated breath he leaned further towards the crack between the boards, not even daring to look in case fate decided someone inside to look out. He opened his mouth to-

THUMP. BlackBerry jumped, choking and sputtering on whatever he had been about to say.

Stepping away from the building and towards Kosara and Kathryn, and back into the drizzle, he didn't have to try to hear the agitated rumblings. Orange light and a gruff, harassed voice broke the darkness, assumedly belonging to Mr. Mallard, who then beckoned Victoria and Marita into the building. For a moment it looked like everything was going to plan. But the threat Mr.Mallard carried and proving that he was armed caused BlackBerry to worry for them especially with how impenetrable the building looked at first glance. He wondered, if something were to go wrong, how he and the others could even get in?

“Do you suppose they will be safe?” He asked the other two.

The moment ended when Mr.Mallard shouted in his, and others, direction. Struck dumb by surprise for the second time, BlackBerry frantically tried to kick his brain into gear and think of something to say, something to do. For an instant there was panic on his face before he wiped it clean with a more calm and collected look, or as much as he could with rain dripping off his nose.

“Yes?”

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Marita had calmed some of Kathryn's nerves. As the Cleric had reassured her, not everything going on was related. And it was was more problematic to chase false leads then no leads. "You're right. I need to not over think this and let it lead me astray." Kathryn needed this, and Marita not calling her an ignorant foreigner was nice. Not that she expected it, but she prepared for it. Maybe she was a bit too paranoid? "I would still like to get the note translated. But I won't do so at the cost of our mission." Kathryn still felt out of her element, but she still had the ability to assist those who understood the way of things better then she did. Even if that was mostly just saying out of trouble, drawing enough trouble to help paint the bigger picture, and moving heavy things for the party. She honestly did hope her specialized skill set didn't see use outside of those goblins from before. She genuinely wanted to help those who were taken, and she didn't want that confrontation with those in charge here. If she had too though, she would.

Once arrived at the Silver Smith, Kathryn debated holding the short bow in her hands so that way if she spotted anything she could react quickly and prepare to defend the group as Marita and Victoria went inside. But she decided that drawing the bow in preparation of combat would be just as likely to start something as being prepared for it. She did take a look around to see if they were being followed, or if they were about to be ambushed. And as she looked around she realized, she didn't see shit. And not in a way where she knew it was clear, she couldn't find much around her and she knew she was either looking too fast or she was missing something. Or nothing, and she was leaning on that paranoid side of things. Marita with the note began things in the shop, Kosara began watching over her weapons and armaments, and Blackberry was... Snooping? Kathryn was tempted to pick up their newest addition and pull him away from the window. But not only would that ruin what little chance they had of not getting in trouble again, but it may sour her relationship with him. "I'm sure they will tell us all about it once they are out." Kathryn said with a slight tone of concern.

Though Kathryn found herself listening in too more then she meant too. She listened as he explained the test and... wait... An Eight foot tall Tart? "I uh... I'm not Eight feet..." She had heard nearly all the comments about her height imaginable. And if what she said at the table the other night were to be believed, she would reach 8 feet soon enough. Though Tart had her puzzled. Tart... tart... Like the treat? She was snapped out of her thoughts when Mallard called out to those waiting outside. Kathryn froze, and even with her helmet resting on her head her it wasn't hard to tell she was now a deer in the torch light. Back stiffened, eyes wide, she looked at the man she accidentally stole from. "Hi." Kathryn said short and sharp as if she was a young girl half her size, who had been caught stealing from the cookie jar. Kathryn took off the helmet and set it on the ground by her feet to seem a bit less threatening as she decided to once again push her luck. She took out the ring and began stepping forward, making sure to not step into the shop itself, and to keep her body as outside of the door as possible. "I'm sorry I took this. I should have returned it sooner." She reached inside just barely while trying to stay out as much as she could in a poor almost comical attempt to set down the ring on the table next to the door. "I'm sorry for upsetting you as well earlier. That wasn't our intention, and if we can make it up to you please let me know." Kathryn attempted to say softly as she backed out the door to let Marita and Victoria take the lead again.

Kathryn while still in sight of Mr. Mallard wanted to show her respect however she could, and attempted to remember how various cultures did so. Her own normally meant a display of the family sword in the manner the situation deemed most appropriate. Being honoring a guest, welcoming a friend, proposing to a loved one, or simply a friendly hug when something more simple was required. None of those options seemed good to use with Mallard as he didn't seem in a hugging mood, and that was the same with Kathryn. And she figured drawing her family sword wouldn't help with that either. "Thank you for your time Sir." Kathryn spoke with genuine optimism, hoping that her earlier encounter with the man wouldn't negatively impact his new interaction with Marita and Victoria.

Victoria blew out a profound exhalation and composed her face, committing to just the right amount of positivity mixed with businesslike determination. She wished that there was an opportunity to touch up her face in a way that didn't involve utilizing a cantrip, but that was just not in the cards. In the end, she decided not to go with either, hoping that her weather-touched features would make her seem more genuine. The approach to the door brought with it the final few seconds for her to summarize the angle of approach she wished to use. Social engagement was close to its own sort of combat, especially if one wanted something. And they certainly wanted something. Information was as important on a field of battle as was steel, or magic, or boots on the ground. Not to mention that, if they were correct about the nature of the threat in this township, the paranoid man's silver would be a valuable asset as well.

The Bard had her game face on by the time Marita slipped the note under the door. When the suggestion was made that she should disarm as well, Victoria responded with a cheerful, smiling, "Not a chance in any of the Nine Hells." Unless prompted to give up her sword, Victoria had no intention of giving up her sword. Spells might be interrupted, but a stabbing didn't require much in the way of concentration in a pinch. She did concede a portion of the point made, unbuckling her sword belt and holding it off to one side instead of abandoning it altogether. Along a similar mindset, she issued a mental command to her animated swine, prompting it to stand under the building's roof overhang.

The "invitation" to enter was answered promptly and confidently by Victoria, striding in with her still sheathed sword out to one side. She frowned at the presence of the loaded crossbow and tried not to let the annoyance of it show on her face. Instead, she reached out to take up the bracelet chain, stating, "A wise precaution, Mr. Mallard," in an earnest tone. She was about to continue when Kathryn spoke up from outside and moved closer to return the ring. V was unsure as to whether this was a good idea, even though it looked like the silversmith had just called Kathryn out for her transgression. Again, the cheery Half-Elf spoke up, "We are not thieves. And we shall comply, of course." She delicately placed the end of the chain top the tip of her tongue and held it for a moment, then set it back down.

"As my associate declared outside, we are here on Robert's behalf. He was quite adamant that his purchase be delivered before nightfall. Ah, may I..?" Victoria made a gesture as to imply lowering her hands and relaxing somewhat, continuing with more than a twinge of emotion behind her words, "The crossbow is unnecessary, sir. We are here to help. We were sent here to help by Sheriff Gregory. Now, if you want nothing to do with what is going on here, fine. I wouldn't blame you at all. We will take Robert's commission and quietly leave." She nodded slowly, taking the opportunity for her eyes to adjust to the lighting conditions to have a quick glance around at their surroundings. Just the basics allowed by the dimmer orange light coming from the small kettle forge to one side. Mostly empty shelves but things on tables near the front of the store. A few weapons on the counter and a couch behind it. The details and full meaning of what it might mean escaped her; details which might have illuminated a greater picture overlooked. One certainty did not slip past her reasoning: This man's actions had purpose. It was not the looser strings of mental fatigue prompting wild action, but a concerted effort toward a goal. He wasn't insane. "Or, tell me your story, and we can try to do something about it." It was a simple speech, simpler then she intended. But she read the room as best as she might, and the letter in the man's possession seemed to weight her simple words positively. Victoria hoped it was at least a good start.

Marita complied with the man's demands, and kept her hands raised in the air where he could see them. He didn't ask for it, but she wasn't going to take any chances with a crossbow aimed at her and a paranoid man at the trigger. She made an effort to move as smoothly as possible, no sudden movements that might set him off. Her face was set and determined, with a twinge of anxiety in the undercurrent. True, she was mentally prepared for this to happen, but things were different when you had to stare down the tip of a bolt. She could feel her heartbeat increase and the adrenaline start to course through her veins, but she maintained her focus.

Marita's face scrunched up upon Mallard almost immediately discovering the rest of the party and then Kathryn's attempt at an apology but said nothing. Perhaps she should have told them to stand out of view from the door, but there was nothing to do in that regard now. Hopefully this swing of events wouldn't immediately escalate the situation and force drastic action, but she would simply have to remain watchful and quick on the draw were such a thing to happen.

Slowly, she knelt down, picked up the ring and pressed it to her tongue for about 10 seconds before returning it. She was content to remain silent for the time being. This was not the kind of situation that invited lots of dialogue from multiple parties, and Victoria had touched upon everything she would want to say immediately. For now the best thing she could do was not set him off and keep her eyes peeled.

With the joyous use of her cloak and the coat, Kosara was MOSTLY relatively dry with the exception of her head. She really needed a fancy hat that would allow her to protect at least the top of her head form the rain! Maybe one like V’s, but with holes for the horns? Possibilities, possibilities, or a bigger cloak that she could hood over her head despite her horns. That was also a possible solution and admittedly she could have put her own current cloak over her head as if it was a blanket and it might work… mostly. She didn’t think of it though.

Silversmith’s place was calm...ish? Yes that was a proper word or maybe it wasn’t? Kosara wasn’t really sure if it could be considered calm if they knew that for a fact on the inside there was a very paranoid and irrational man that had a crossbow. On the outside it was calm though, and the rain was making everything have this almost pleasant feel to it. She was starting to get used to being wet too by now as she hid under a ledge by one of the buildings while the negotiations crew went to start talking to the man. She vaguely noticed the door opening as she instead looked around and he attention focused on something she hadn’t paid attention to so far. As the rain gently fell it formed puddles across the roads. The rain drops made tiny splashes as they made contact with the ground.

While everybody was busy doing their own thing, she kneed down to look at the rain making tiny splashed closer. There wasn’t much if any rain in the desert. She had seen rain when she came to the north, but this was the first time she had actually nothing else to focus on, it was always usually something or other. Now as they were waiting outside, her idle hands and mind caught onto the rain and it’s many curiosities. She paid little attention to the happenings as she instead followed the way to a rather big puddle in the road where many raindrops were falling and making noise and rather pretty splashes before she did the only logical thing that anybody who hadn’t seen puddles before would do. With both feet she hopped into the puddle, splashing it’s water everywhere, including onto her pants and blinked at it. It was kinda like playing in the oasis, but different. She looked up at the rain that fell on her face and grinned at the dark crying skies. She had a childish glee as she spun around, sending water all around herself as she stomped and spun around. Her long and wet braid, now rather heavy also spun.” Hehehee!” She giggled in joy, happily splashing about in the water, stomping and kicking about, sending happy splashes. She didn’t even notice the door opening until the smith exclaimed rather loudly and only turned about to see Kathryn going there, before refocusing on the puddles and the rain and resuming her improvised watery dance of joy, not minding the fact that said energetic dance of joy was making her pants and coat rather wet also, with all the water splashing about. Nor who would have to clean the thing later.

This was part of why she chose to journey away from home! Back in the desert she’d never get a chance to play in the rain. Wondering about it, while dancing under the pretty rain, she pondered briefly how many other interesting things she may have missed on her way here, so busy to see everything and unable to keep up. Well she had time, all the time and was hearing that this Snow thing that was apparently similar to ice was gonna happen before long. She knew ice, cause of magic, but snow? Snow was something she hadn’t experienced so far and really wanted to also see snowfall. She was told that watching the falling snow was an experience even better than watching the falling rain! She didn’t know if it was nearly as fun though. Splashing about in the rain was amazing!

His attention was being pulled in two directions between Lady Kathryns attempts to appease Mr.Mallard, and Kosara splashing wildly in a puddle that was dangerously close. BlackBerry watched Kosara dance through the rain and jump into the puddles like an excited child, and the giggles she let out only reinforced the idea.

Pulling his attention back to Mr.Mallard as Lady Kathryn returned from returning a ring she had accidentally stolen earlier, possibly why she had volunteered against speaking to him before, and was it the same ring he had put in his mouth earlier? Just what was it that the other two had actually done to the poor man earlier? Kosara had mentioned he had been very eager to throw them out earlier. Speaking of, Blackberry hopped forward to avoid another splash from the woman.

Questions for later, after the door had closed with Mr.Mallard and his crossbow on the other side of it.

"Apologies sir, we don’t mean to cause any trouble." He held up his hand in a hopefully placating manner praying Mr.Mallard wouldn’t pull the trigger. "We are simply accompanying the other two but thought it best to wait outside."

He threw what he hoped to be another innocent smile at Mr.Mallard, trying hard not to look too guilty of anything under the man's wary glare. The same knot of worry twisted his stomach, the townspeople so far had been wary but cautiously accepting of him so far, but even so he couldn’t say any of them would trust him or even like him and it wouldn’t do for him to cause trouble now. His eyes locked onto the arrow notched in the crossbow for a moment, taking note of how razor sharp and undoubtedly painful it looked in the light.

In the meantime he had to, again, hop to the side to avoid being splashed by Kosara as she resumed her maddened dance through the rain. BlackBerry had to admit that she was really good, twisting this way and that through the rain drops, always moving and never in one place for more than a second, even where she did stop it was only to suddenly jump into another puddle.

"Careful!" He exclaimed and danced away from the errant splashes, pulling up his robes to avoid dragging them through the sodden ground. He snapped at her. "I would rather keep what little of me is still dry, just so thank you."

Despite his efforts, Kosara managed to spin a big drop of water right at his face. He scolded at his robes as he straightened them out again as best he could. Already they were starting to feel damp and heavy in the rain. BlackBerry eyed the slim dry space under the SilverSmiths roof beside the window he had been before Mr.Mallard had spooked him, or so he assumed at least. No, best not just yet…

Instead, BlackBerry let out a huff and calmed himself. It had been a nice dance Kosara had been doing, and he could tell (or hoped at least) that she hadn't actually meant to hit him or cause any trouble.

"Oh well. I suppose I can dry off again back at the open house." He spluttered at Kosara, and wiped away the water from his eye, and cast a sour look at the grey sky. “I assume there is not much rain where you are from?”

Weather: Rain continued in the lighter manner it had been for the last couple of hours. The sun had yet to make a formal appearance, thanks to the dramatic and foreboding cloud cover. A rumble of light thunder could be heard, distant enough not to pose much worry yet present enough to make itself known. Whether it was incoming or outgoing remained to be seen.

Time: It is afternoon. By this time, it would not be out of place to say mid-afternoon.

Ambience: The weather had not improved, nor had the temperature. The former still made profound influence on the latter, and any not dressed accordingly or with other means of staving off the elements would be feeling the effects of autumnal rain. The streets more vaguely resembled an abandoned settlement, except for the light which spilled out from slat-shuttered windows or the subtle glow of illumination behind curtains. There was life, and plenty of it, in Avonshire. None of it wished to draw attention to itself, it seemed. Displays of fun and frolic stood where they did the previous day, dripping with precipitation. It gave a lonely, forgotten feel, one tinged with the promise of uncertain peril which was slowly revealing itself.

"What part of 'close the door behind you' was hard to understand?" growled Jacques, lowering his still loaded crossbow to point at the floor as he brushed past Marita and Victoria. The words of the two adventurers who spoke through the open portal were seemingly ignored as he slammed the door shut. Realizing that he could not effectively heft the thick, wooden bar to the door one-handed, he set the crossbow down on the same storage box which held his silver "test" implements. Tired, red-rimmed eyes turned to scrutinize the two women now in his place of business.

"Alright.... okay.... alright. NOW," he finally said, some sense of social decorum coming to him, tarnished though it was. His words hinted at mania; scattered thoughts coming from a mind that held many concerns at once. "Bob. Bob's a good man. Neil was okay, too. But he's not around. BOB - decent fellow. Damn shame what happened." Mr. Mallard removed the bolt from his weapon and eased the tension on its line, bringing both back to the counter which dominated the majority of the space in his building. "I think, yes, I believe we can risk a little light. Your friends out there are doing enough to let people know I'm in here anyway so..." A lamp was produced from a nearby stand, its wick lit from a taper which was ignited from the flameless, glowing plate underneath the small pot forge in the room. It provided more adequate light, which in turn gave a better look at the surroundings.

It was difficult to place this as a silversmith's shop at casual glance. There were a small number of simple weapons on the counter and the only place silver goods were kept was on display near the windows - themselves boarded up as if expecting trouble or an extended absence. A low cabinet and table near the back door held curious items; a map and a collection of old papers, what appeared to be a goat skull, an important looking book, and a collection of inks with other sundries, not to mention a couple empty bottles of what might have once held hard liquor, if the half-full one next to it was any indication. Behind the counter was a couch that looked like it had been slept upon, as indicated by the more domestic pillow toward one end and blanket laid haphazardly across the back of it. The pot forge was openly active. Its mysterious heat source kept a moderate amount of metal in a semi-solid, malleable state and made the interior of this place quite comfortable, even at a distance. A very specific set of tools lay nearby, along with a few spools of fine, white metal wire.

"...everywhere, scurrying around with their scratching feet and..." he muttered, stepping over to his small workstation. "Good Robert has friends. He's been through enough. Okay, so, you know, right? You know? Tell me what - " Jacques stopped himself before changing his line of speech. "Don't know who to trust anymore. You see someone acting squirrely and... your friend out there... They could be anyone. Can't draw too much attention until after the Harvestide. Anyway, Bob's order isn't quite done yet. Just a few more minutes. Please, have a seat if you want." A jerky motion indicated the couch behind the counter.

The silversmith sat at a high stool and produced two sets of manacles. They were connected by chains and looked perfectly serviceable to keep one restrained for a long period of time at the wrists and ankles. A bundle of wire from near the spools was likewise hauled over, from this he unwound a length of braided metal for his immediate use. "So," Jacques started, "It doesn't take that many of you of fetch a package. Before I go telling you my story, why don't you tell me one first?" He picked up a device which resembled an inscribing tool and began forming lines on the interior surface of a manacle. A minuscule wisp of smoke carried up from the metal as drops of molten iron fell into an oiled catch bowl. The braided wire was carefully placed into the resulting groove as he went along. "Gift from my uncle," offered Jacques. "He specialized in silver inlays."

It was difficult to tell how much time had passed after the door slammed shut, but minutes can feel like hours if you're waiting in the rain. Luckily it wasn't that awful anymore. But very few people, given a free and open choice, would voluntarily stand in the rain for no reason if better options were available. No screaming was evident immediately following, which might have been taken as a good sign. Another peal of thunder, still low and far, followed a brief brightening of the sky as electricity discharged in the clouds but did not seem to make it to the ground.

This stillness, this quiet (aside from the steady white noise of the falling rain) was interrupted by the sound of someone whistling just up the road. It was not a short, sharp noise to gather attention in the slightest. Quite differently, it was a flowing and merry tune that might have found a home at a tavern late at night. Jolly, even. The source of this music came into view with confident, leisurely steps. Rain-soaked clothing hung about the square shoulders of the Township Constable, Cavendish, approached openly, with two of the Township's guard flanking him. The man carried his hammer openly as if expecting to utilize it in some endeavor which probably did not involve pounding in tent stakes. Cavendish's eyes darted about for a moment, taking in the whole scene before the whistling stopped. From his distance, he called out, "Fancy running into you two here. And you found a new friend. That's just adorable." A smarmy grin split his face, "Don't stop playing in the rain on my account. Go ahead, you stomp in some puddles, little girl. I'm not here for you right now." The three of them continue advancing on the scene with the Constable's eyes darting up every so often. "I'm here to arrest the silversmith. I hope he puts up a fight. Move aside."

Ever interested in learning new things and pieces of lore, crafty or otherwise, Victoria listened as she could and gave detailed attention to the technique presented by the silversmith as he made silver inlays into baser metal. She was not a metalworker in the slightest, though he did recall the time it took to put finishing touches on the slim cut & thrust sword generally wore when out and about in an adventuring sense. It was more utilitarian than most of her possessions, minimal of decoration and direct in its construction, its beauty came from decent craftsmanship of Ashhaven city smiths and a solid, swept guard. A practical weapon. Yet the minor embellishing of this item took significantly longer to achieve than the relatively lightning pace with which Mr. Mallard scored the metal of the cuffs and inserted braided silver wire. This had to be magic. And that piqued her interest even more.

Victoria glanced around the shop again, paying attention to the detail better presented in the brighter lamplight. This was a little odd in comparison to other jewelers' establishments, and not just for the lack of merchandise. There were sundries of ritual magic and some reagents that she recognized, and a suspicion that the book had some significance to an observer of arcane practices. Was this man acquainted with magic on a more formal level?

A clue to the answer of this question came in the form of Jacques himself admitting that his metal inscribing tool was a gift from his uncle. Maybe he wasn't a mage of some order or another, but simply close to someone who was. Whichever idea was accurate, both, neither, or some other eventuality, the fact was that this man was inlaying silver at a rate she had never even heard was possible. A spark of covetous pragmatism swept Victoria's face as she spoke with sweet, inquisitive notes, "Mr. Mallard, sir? I must admit that I am jealous of your ability to bend and craft precious metal. It is truly an art, and you appear masterful at your craft. Considering our suspicions, and what we have already learned from Robert, well... How long might it take you to grace, say for instance, a sword with your craftsmanship?" Her face remained positive even as her voice altered to the serious, following it up with, "And because of the emergency, what might I do to convince you? We are at a pivotal moment in time, Jacques. I saw with my own eyes a transformation happen right in the middle of the main thoroughfare. Giving us fighting chance would only help you. And others." Not to mention that, on a selfish level, a silver inlaid blade would be a beautiful and useful addition to her arsenal (and a great conversation opener for the telling of tales or influencing people of note). She smiled. It was flattering but noncommittal, in only the way a person of society might when they wanted something.

The silversmith paused his work very briefly to look to Victoria. He said nothing, sitting still at his workstation, though his eyes darted toward Marita, then to the door, then back to the Bard. Nodding, Mr. Mallard sighed a little and got back to his work, muttering, "I'm charging you all for raw materials."

Victoria's face beamed.
