JJ

Wertham Community Centre was awash with little verses and lyrics here and there of rasta and of rebellion. It tickled JJ's childish side. His focus was on clean broad strokes to apply bland but pleasant white tones over the gnarled abused benches. He slowed his movements as the paint wore thin, re-applying with a quick wrist to the bucket of paint least it dry and fray his work. Simple matters such as this is what he aught to focus on, perhaps it would do him some good. Maybe he was getting some secondhand of the wacky tobbacy. He inhaled his own puffer thanks to Prince before taking a small break to remark on the work others were doing. He caught some newer faces too. This was getting to be an event in JJ's restless mind.

"A little painting here, some yardwork over there, fish the bay, heck we have it all don't we.", He spoke in a soft chuckle near the end. His sarcasm hopefully landed with some still others he saw looked lost in the sauce. A sliver of french caught his ears as he turned to see some of the ladies getting to work too. This deck of cards was playing itself out interestingly. It gave JJ a large smirk.

A lanky newer face(Aksel) had managed to sneak into the group even. He felt like water to JJ, finding the crevasses to fill in. Moldable even. The youth's rambunctious side was stirring again so he struck a line toward the fellow, something in his accent sounding far off and cold. "Cosmetic paint hides alot I guess. Hard to hide from people though." He said as he walked up toward the tall guy, empty can lugging in tow. The way he approached from the back to refill his can made it seem slick but JJ was keen on introducing himself more. A receptive voice might be the ticket to a friendship if it played out right."Name's JJ by the way, what's yours?" spoke the joyrider, who instead of offering a hand was busy restocking his endeavor.

"Every little thing,” Aksel continued softly singing with Kassandra. gonna be alright.”

One of the others—a young man with long dark hair who had been searching for a light earlier—had stopped painting and was moving toward him now. Aksel allowed his song to fade out.

"Cosmetic paint hides a lot I guess,” he began. “Hard to hide from people though."

He stopped nearby, paint supplies in tow and began filling the empty paint can.

"Name's JJ by the way, what's yours?"

Ever the chameleon, Aksel mirrored the raven haired youth and continued working.

He wsan’t sure if he had ever properly met JJ before, but if Aksel were simply judging the book by the cover, he would be willing to bet that the pair of them had attended at least one concert together without knowing it.

”It might surprise you how easy it can be to hide when you really want to, he said with his melodic accent through a subtle, friendly smile. He then lowered his brush into his own can and stood up to his full height. ”Though, a bit harder for me in a place like this,” Aksel finished with a mischievous grin.

Aksel fully faced JJ and offered his left forearm for a potential warrior’s embrace—halfway a playful jest, halfway in mutual respect and solidarity.

"Aksel.”

"Aksel.” spoke the fellow delinquent, and offered a full introduction no less. JJ took it with gusto. He extended his arm and grabbed the forearm for a real shake. Not often did his bravado receive good marks but he was to take it none the less.”Though, a bit harder for me in a place like this,” With a big sloppy grin he pulled off the soon to be finished cig and remarked back, "So what brings you abouts my man?, I got sticky fingers" he tittered out with a flourish of fingers and he disposed of the vice. "Some not so much." he also mentioned gesturing to the lass Ax was trying to comfort, nodding in solidarity. "We got alot going on here though, so let's see where it leads." he spoke while gesturing to the group at large, "Til the man comes back around" his grin soured.

Frankly JJ was more worried about authority and its bindings than anything else so far. Painting and jousting verbally was just his cream on the top. Seeing a fellow musical affineado helped a lot, which probably led him to such an introduction. He'd get to know the others once he found his niche he thought. He somewhat shrugged like an afterthought, "I'm just here doing time like the rest of us." You didn't need to be much of an empath to recognize the defeat in his gestures.

"So what brings you abouts, my man? I got sticky fingers"” JJ asked, giving his own answer as he finished and discarded his cigarette

”Some,” Aksel followed where he gestured—the vocalist. ”Not so much…” JJ nodded. He clearly understood Aksel’s reason for choosing to sing along.

"We got a lot going on here, though,” JJ gestured to the other painters. Not all of them were doing so. Everyone seemed to be either enjoying the company of others or otherwise peaceful. No one was really at odds with any other. “So, let's see where it leads."

Aksel nodded while looking from person to person, ending back at his new Kamerat whose grin was fading.

"Til the man comes back around…"

Aksel’s own soft smile inverted. His brow furrowed a little, eyes narrowing slightly. He knew exactly what JJ meant. His forgotten fury that led to the deed that got him here flickering to the forefront at those words.

"I'm just here doing time, like the rest of us."

Aksel knew that feeling—the resignation. Another reminder of what had led him here.

“I know just what you mean…” Aksel said, voice barely above a whisper. He scanned the scene, hoping to hold onto what he’d felt before it slipped away—leaving only rumination in its place.

He remembered that he could have swore his keen ears had heard someone singing along in French before JJ arrived. Looking in that direction, he saw a girl calmly painting a bench. She had the still beauty of a raven on a snow drift, and a voice that didn’t try to be heard, but lingered all the same.

“Have you met her yet?” he said quietly, his gaze still on the girl.

He finally looked away.

“She seems like she’s on her own, too...”

Aksel met JJ’s eyes, then returned to the girl. Her soft, melancholic vibe echoed in his own expression.

"Thanks bro." Cait said through the spliff hanging between her lips. As the flame from Prince's lighter ignited the end of her vice, she drew in a long, smooth breath. She held her breath for a few seconds, allowing the flavor and substance of the roll to sit on her tongue before turning away to exhale into open space. The effect of the cannabis was almost immediate; her tolerance had taken a dip since her run with the police, due to her folks deciding to cut her off from any drugs or alcohol. Her head lightened and her eyes glazed a bit. A lighthearted chuckle pumped out of her chest. "The best hash, as usual from you," she said, raised the spliff like she was toasting to a drink. She took another hit, this time, a quicker one. "That's twice I owe you."

By that point the pair had arrived at a still-tagged bench. Cait, masking the loopiness of the high with an exagggerated, forced straight face, knelt down and pried her can open and dipped the brush in. She gave the pain a few wuick stirs and pulled the brush out and began painting. Others nearby had began singing an old Marley tune, setting a relaxing mood to the affair. "They damn near caught the whole crew," she explained to Prince. "Late night sesh over in the Royal Parks. Hit up some spots, dodged a few cops along the way. They finally caught up with us tricking off the Matilda Fountain." She burst out a laugh and took another hit off of her spliff. "Guess they thought the same as you thought: that I was the best skater of the lot; sent some new upstart to chase me down on a bike. I almost fuckin' faceplanted when my wheels hit his baton." She sighed. "So yeah... 'defacing' a historic monument, plus charges for public intoxicatoion. And here I am." She gently glided her paint brush across the seat of the bench, and puffed on the spliff.

Kassandra Keighley-Rey

At the sound of others picking up the soft, peaceful strains of Bob Marley, Kassandra’s hesitant smile grew. These people weren’t bad. Despite all of them being convicted of various things, despite all of them being ‘criminals’. Maybe none of them needed to be here. Yes, she'd seen the grafitti (pretty), the cigarettes (ew) and at least one joint (maybe Prince was a rasta?). But so far, she wasn't convinced.

Henry’s approach stilled her melody – and before she could put the words together, he apologized to her. That wasn’t right! “I – I’m sorry too! If you hadn’t had to help me, you wouldn’t be here at all! It’s my fault. I’m sorry.” There was a part of her that really meant to say something else. To thank him for stepping in when everyone else turned their heads, or pretended not to see. To admit that she had liked the bar, despite what had occurred.

“You’re not a bad person at all. You know? I… you…” She chewed her lip, finally resting her gaze on her worn-out trainers. She hated it when this happened. When she couldn’t convince herself to speak her mind. When what she needed to say warred with what others wanted to hear. Unconsciously, her fist balled up. Pulling at the scabs of her healing knuckles.

“...sorry.”

Henry

Henry looked around after the purple-haired lass started randomly going off. He wanted to know who she was talking to, because it could not have been him. When he accepted that she was talking to him a long sigh escaped his lips. He thought everyone here would be cool. He was clearly wrong. "Bugger off, will ya? I'm going to paint a different bench. I just wanted to check on my friend here first. And if we're going to be stuck together for six months I'd suggest being more welcoming and understanding and less of a nag. Didn't even ask my name before trying to get in my arse."

He turned his attention back to Kassandra and gave her a warm, apologetic smile. "I'm sorry about that. And it's okay. I don't mind being here. It gives me the chance to do more for the community besides giving them advice while I pour them a drink. But thank you, I appreciate it." Henry noticed her tensing up and pulling at the scabs on her knuckles. He didn't realize she hurt herself in the process of giving those guys what they were begging for. He reached out to grab her balled up fist to help calm her down. "Hey, don't sweat it. Like the song says, every little thing's gonna be alright. I'll let you get back to painting."

Henry stood up and walked over to the paint cans and brushes to get his pair before walking over to help Skylar with his bench. "Alright! Let's see if we can get this knocked out quick."

Prince

"Don't mention it." Prince responded before taking another pull of his spliff. When he was done he lifted it to meet hers in the air to complete the toast. He never did that before, but that just might be a new ritual of his when he's in a session now. "Yeah, Cassian always has the greatest bud. I'm surprised he's still small time. And you don't owe me anything. Just enjoying your company these next six months is enough."

When they arrived at the bench he watched her get started on painting. Maybe he would paint today, but after he was done with his spliff. He didn't want to end up accidentally huffing paint in the process. He listened to her as she explained what happened and laughed with her when she said she tricked off the Matilda Fountain. "Wow. I wish I was there to witness that. I would've tagged it to memorialize the occasion." When she finished explaining he took another hit of his spliff and added. "At least they recognize talent when they see it."

The Storm

Tony walked outside to check on the group's progress so far and couldn't believe what he saw when he walked around the corner. He saw most of the group doing what they were supposed to do, but then there was that punk Prince just standing around like an idiot and smoking a spliff. His friend was smoking as well, but at least she was doing work. He had to compose himself before he started going off on them at full volume. He inhaled and exhaled a few times before walking over to Prince. "Seriously? Are you taking the piss? I gave you one job to do, something you're supposed to be good at and instead of doing it, you stand around smoking like an idiot. Give it to me."

Prince stood there like a deer in headlights and that irritated Tony even more. He reached out to snatch the spliff from his mouth, but before he could a large hailstone the size of an exercise ball fell from the sky and crashed smack dab in the middle of his car causing the alarm to turn on.

Tony and Prince ducked from the shock, with Prince dropping his spliff in the process. Tony turned around to see that his car had been hit. "That's my car! I just got it back!"

"I swear I didn't do that." Prince responded, confused about what was happening. Another large chunk of hail hit the water behind everyone splashing the group in the process.

Henry looked up in the sky to see a large and ominous storm cloud hovering over Wertham. "What the hell is that?"

The storm cloud answered his question by dropping another chunk of hail into the nearby dumpster toppling it over and destroying it in the process.

Tony wasn't going to stand around and let them all get crushed by giant pieces of hail. He gathered himself and finally spoke up to the group. "Let's get everyone inside. Let's go! Move, move!" Whether they joined him or not he started running towards the entrance as hailstones continued to fall around them.

Prince reached his hand out to Cait to help her up before they started running together.

Henry jumped up from the bench he and Skylar were painting and yelled to the others, "Come on! Drop the brushes and go!"

No matter how fast they ran it wouldn't be enough. They'd avoid the hailstones, but they wouldn't get inside the building in time before they were all struck with bolts of lightning that seemed to target them specifically.

The first hailstone came down like a meteor, smashing Tony’s car into scrap metal. Sky flinched, paintbrush still clutched in his hand. “Well,” he muttered, “that’s one way to void the warranty.”

Then another fell, close enough to spray him with icy water. Sky chuckled at the absurdity of the situation. “Of course,” he muttered. “Six months of community service, and I die in a hideous orange jumpsuit. Fabulous.” He delt with this the same way he delt with everything else.

As soon as he heard Henry shout, Sky dropped his brush and bolted. “This better not mess up my hair!”

He saw Henry ahead, helping out others. Sky sighed. Of course Henry looks heroic in the middle of the apocalypse. Of fucking course.

Sky forced his legs to move faster. The storm wasn’t letting up. The sky was dark with storm clouds. The lightning cracked the sky and thunder boomed. For the briefest moment, Sky felt the hair on his arms lift. The air around him was thick with static electricity.

Then the lightning came down, and everything went white.

JJ

“Have you met her yet?” Aksel said quietly, before continuing.
“She seems like she’s on her own, too...”

"Mate, arn't we all. Arn't we all." JJ drifted off as he heard a squabble from some of the fellow delinquents. That shift quickly lead into their new overlords return, which made JJ shrink in disfavor. Much like Prince the sudden authority made him balk in silence. Granted, when you've been told off most of your years you tend to let it ride its course until you can manage a response, and he was just about to rattle off a zinger to maybe keep the mood chipper when nature's own icebreaker took out Tony's car. Another chunk fell from the heavens and splashed him adding to the disarray. Then the dumpster exploded likewise near them. Shouts of a storm and curses ablaze flowed freely, especially from JJ as this was not part of his plan. He took a gander of the situation and his feral instinct to run almost took over.

When Tony told them to move he did so quickly cussing the whole way.
"What in the fuck? Like really, fuckin boosting rides got me paintin' benches and now this shite!" rattled off the young man as he heard the argumentive fellow tell them to follow their car-less master now. JJ snorted at the absurdity of this new turn of events and nervously giggled, to his new friend, "Maybe we're not on our own, but we will be if we stay here!"

The soft smirk he gave Aksel as he sprinted towards seemingly safety was the last thing he could remember as blinding white took over.

JJ’s existential remark cemented his kinship with Aksel. A sardonic smirk gently pulled at his lip. His new friend wasn’t wrong. Still, it didn’t hurt to try and belong somewhere—however fleeting. At the very least, it was always nice to be seen. Aksel was always willing to give people the opportunity to stay.

Some storms were easier to face with someone beside you.

Any mirth drained from both of their faces as Tony returned, as if on cue, as the sky was becoming a darker hue than usual. Aksel was not looking forward to having to deal with him. He knew he wouldn’t be able to dodge the man forever, but that would never stop him from trying.

Fortunately, Aksel had positioned himself to not be among the first to incur his wrath. No, that honor fell to Prince and Co., as the irate overseer approached.

JJ had clocked it too, and seemed like he was going to make a remark to try and maintain the positive atmosphere in spite of the return of The Man—as he had put it. Just as Tony reached out for Prince’s spliff, there was a massive crashing crunch as an absurdly large piece of hail demolished a nearby vehicle.

"That's my car!" Tony exclaimed. “I just got it back!"

Prince became reflexively defensive, clearly as baffled as anyone else.

Another huge chunk of ice fell.

Henry looked to the oncoming storm.

"What the hell is that?"

Aksel followed his gaze, and for a moment, the world seemed still. The sky had gone from sullen… to wrathful. The clouds above the city were churning and roiling, as if with a purpose—and it felt personal. As if Odin himself were riding to claim their lives.

Another hail-boulder fell, shattering the dumpster like it owed the sky money. Aksel barely flinched. Watching—looking from person to person—his jaw tight, heart racing. Fight or flight kicked in, but his body hadn’t chosen a side.

JJ was cussing up his own storm, leaning on humor to survive the absurdity of the situation. Aksel admired that, but remained focused on the task at hand until Tony began shouting for everyone to run for it.

"Maybe we're not on our own,” JJ echoed his prior insight with a smirk. "But we will be if we stay here!"

With that, JJ immediately sped off with more speed and skill than Aksel would have anticipated. He kept pace with him as best he could. That is, until they were about to pass where the Prince party had been. Aksel snatched up the fallen spliff—now extinguished—and fell in behind JJ.

Waste not, want not, he thought.

Megan

"Go fuck yourself, lazy asshole" was her response to the guy trying to lecture her on what to do, and she glared at him as he walked away before sitting down and picking up her paintbrush again to continue painting. At least the other guy was actually doing something productive now it seemed.

"Sorry. Coasters like him piss me off" she offered to the other girl who seemed to be tensed up over whatever happened in the past. Then there was shouting, and a smirk from the girl. Lazy fucks finally got caught. Then there was a loud crashing sound and she spun round to look, eyes wide at the scene.

"The hell?" She stared as more fell, then there was a small chuckle. "Kharma's a real bitch huh..." The girl stood up, reaching over to grab Kassandra's hand and say "come on, quickly!" as she pulled the other girl, hoping that she wasn't going to just panic and freeze on the spot. That would be a terrible way to die, and going by what this Kass girl was like undeserved for her even if Megan thought it'd be fitting for herself.

✧𝐀𝐧𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐲𝐚 𝐌𝐨𝐨𝐫𝐞✧

Ana pauses her painting for a moment, feeling eyes on her figure. She looks up, her singing resorting to humming once more as she looks around before finding the gaze of one of the other deplorable folk she was working with.

Her eyes trail him for a moment before she nods a greeting, forcing her head back to the task at hand. It’s almost calming, painting, humming, although her mind drifts back to when she worked in the shop. She felt guilty, leaving someone who trusted her, who needed her help. Would Ana even have that place when she left this hellhole?

The young woman sighs, resting her head on the wall were paint was lacking, although some of it still got on the side of her hair. Then, she heard a crash. Ana gasps, her eyes wide as they snap to where the sound came from. Hail. Hail? What the fuck…

She drops her brush, looking up. That…was a lot of ice. Wait, wasn’t hail dangerous? The answer to her silent question was answered rather quickly, an icy ball hitting her shoulder.

“Fuck!” She shouts, along with now what she noticed as others yelling and shouting to, simply put, get the hell out of here.
Ana goes to run, but she has dodged bullets, she never dodged ice from the heavens that seemed like a cruel punishment for all the wrong she has done.

In an instant, when she was just near a place to hide, the brick like ice smashes into the side of her head, sending her thoughts to dreams as her body hits the pavement harshly

"Yeah. I suppose they do. Between you and I, that's two talents they got right." Cait's mood about the community service stint was starting to lighten as she talked to Prince. She drew in another hit off of her spliff, and pulled into a genuine smile as she continued painting the bench. Her grin faded slightly when she saw the door to the community center open and Tony strode out in all of his glory. "Task master incoming," she mouthed with a laugh to Prince, who hadn't even picked up his brush. But it was already two late, and she found herself with a front row seat to a hardknock scolding by Drill Sergeant Tony.

She began to chuckle a bit at her friend's expense.

But the sound of something heavy landing on a car nearby cut her off. Her amusement intensified when Tony revealed it was his own car, fresh back from the shop, that had just been crushed under the weight of a cannonball of hail. Cait laughed out hard, nearly spitting out her spliff; her laugher masked by the blaring alarm from Tony's car. Then a second chunk of hail slammed into the ground nearby; Cait's amusement ceased almost immediately when a third chunk crashed onto the bench she had just been painting, causing her to stumble back in shock. The others had already gotten their head start on Tony's order, running back to safety of the community center. Cait reached up to to take Prince's hand, hauling herself back to her feet with his assistance, and bolting towards the building, spliff still miraculously between her lips.

Her hand slid out from Prince's. Another chunk of hail touched down just behind her. Then a surge passed through her, the electrical current running through her from behind. She fell forward, losing her smoke, and took a hard landing against the concrete before she faded out of consciousness.

Everyone was shouting, dodging, fleeing, making their way toward alleged safety.

After scooping up the spliff, Aksel looked about. He would never catch up to JJ, and everyone else seemed—no, not everyone. The French girl. She seemed to be having the worst luck. The massive hail seemed to be targeting her as she went for cover. He started in her direction. But another piece of ice was falling. It collided with the side of her head, and pulled her to the ground in a sickening display.

"Nei! Aksel cried, reaching forward with his hand as he tried to increase his stride.

Then, everything flashed the brightest white.

Then, nothing.

Kassandra allowed herself a moment of surprise. Not at the storm itself but the fact that she hadn't felt it coming. London rain was icy - she could always feel the temperature drop before the first drops hit. This, though, had sprung from nothing. Her legs were already moving before the purple haired girl prompted her. But it wasn't until she was halfway down the street, dodging massive and vengeful chunks of the sky, that she realized she was still holding the paintbrush.

Flecks of white colored her hair, face and fingertips, dotting her dark skin like bizarre constellations. All the while, ice screamed and shattered around them. One came so close she felt the cold on her face. Unthinking, she raised her arm to shield the only person shorter than she was.

And then everything was sharp and white- the last thing held in her mind was a desperate plea that would never be heard on this Earth.

"Mummy... help."

What The Hail Just Happened?

Henry woke up feeling pain all throughout his body, but mainly in his back as landed on the hard concrete when the lightning hit them. He struggled to lean up and looked around at the others to see if they were alright. He could see them all breathing and was glad to know they were all alive. By all accounts they should all be dead. He was surprised that they weren't. He struggled to sit up, but he didn't feel anything was broken. He guessed his body was still adjusting to the shock. "Is everyone alright?" He finally asked aloud.

"No, I'm not alright." Prince whined as he sat up. "I got struck by lightning and to make it worse I dropped my bloody spliff. But I guess I'm alive." He turned to Cait to check on her. She was thankfully alive. He didn't know what he'd do if he lost her to some freak storm like this. "Hey, Cait. Wake up. It's not your time to go to that big skate spark in the sky."

Henry shook his head and sighed. At least Prince was still Prince. He looked up to see that the sky was clear as if the storm never happened. If it wasn't for all the shattered pieces of hail around them he would've believed that it didn't. "At least the storm's gone. Hey, Sky. How are you feeling?" He asked as he turned to check on him.

Tony was awakened by Prince's annoying voice. He hoped they weren't all dead and he was stuck with Prince in the afterlife. He felt his pulse to see that he was surprisingly still alive. With his luck lately he was sure that he'd be dead. He lifted his head up to check on the others and spasmed in his neck. That wasn't okay. He should go to the doctor to see if everything was okay. They all should. "Is everyone okay?" He paused to wait for their responses.

"We're alive, but we'll be okay." Henry answered. "Though I don't think any of us can continue painting, especially her." He pointed at Ana noticing the hit and spill she took earlier. He would've helped her himself, but he saw Aksel heading towards her first.

Tony spasmed again. "Yeah... You're right. We'll call it an early day. Once you're able to get up go get changed and I'll hopefully see you all tomorrow." He struggled to his feet and unlocked the doors to the Centre once he finally managed to stand. He grabbed his head and stumbled inside to his office.

"Anyone notice how he was spasming?" Prince asked. "You think he's gonna be okay? Maybe we'll end up getting a new Probation Worker."

JJ

The last thing JJ remembered was sprinting to safety. Now a lump of dissary was he as he lay crumbled on the ground. His brow half-bleeding, his wrists sore from stalling his fall, and his wits more scrambled than an egg. what the fuuuu... he internally muttered through clenched teeth before realizing people were speaking. Speaking! He was at a delinquency program, and something had happened. It all came back to him as he sat straight up in a flushed rush. Beads of sweat started at his nape, real danger and its consequences always brought a rise out of him. He hadn't managed to reply to Henry's, or Tony's check-in through his grog. Hell, he was still staring at his extremities and doing a quick one-two to make sure he still functioned as intended. But as others around him also woke and spoke, he too felt words building to bubble out.

The electric tumble frazzled his hair, and there was an exploded lighter in his chest pocket. Well, what was left of a pocket. His head rang like a bell too. That brought his mind toward the more socially primal questions. His new tribe had just faced their first adversity, might need to check on the rest of the jungle. He caught something from his fellows near the main group, "At lea... Sky. How....you feeling?"

"His poor hair." mumbled the misfit as humor started its way back into his psyche. "We're alive... but we'll be okay." Henry answered through JJ's concussed state. "...don't think any of us ...painting, especially her." That sobered up his joking pretty quickly, as he internally ran the roladex of the group for names and faces. Prince and his skate friend seemed whole, "Anyone notice how he was spasming?" he even mentioned through JJ's haze, which had shut out Tony's talk. Oh right, they had an overseer. So did Henry and his fab mate, but how was his new buddy? "Hey Ax. Aksel? You good dude?" he fumbled and staggered upright trying to spot a familiar face in this uncertainty as he looked up at the sky like it might just fall on them. Again.

Aksel’s eyes stirred. He was gradually regaining consciousness, the sounds of voices rousing him again. He blinked open to a world that felt... wrong. He didn’t remember falling. Just the flash. The brightest white. Then nothing.

Now, there was shouting. Movement. Pain. His body felt like it had been borrowed by something divine and returned slightly misaligned. He shifted, testing his limbs. They worked. Mostly.

As memory began to return to him, he forced himself onto his stomach and raised himself onto a knee before wobbling to his feet. He stretched his neck and shook his head, the long curtain of his hair whipping about before settling again.

Looking at the scene, everyone seemed to be okay. He kept scanning, remembering now what he had been doing before… well, before whatever happened.

He spotted her—not far now, but farther than she should’ve been. The flash had somehow tossed the poor girl from her last known position. Aksel began making his way as fast as his body would allow, which was even less impressive in his current state.

"Hey Ax. Aksel? You good dude?"

He slowed and turned toward JJ’s voice, slow and deliberate.

"I think so," he muttered, raising a thumb, voice hoarse. "Still here."

He looked toward his target again. She was breathing. Aksel sighed softly in relief. That was enough for now. He kept moving, each step a quiet defiance.

The shattered hail glistened like divine debris. The storm had passed, but something had been marked. He didn’t know what yet. His head was swimming, but he could try to do at least this much.

Some storms were easier to face with someone beside you, his mind echoed.

Even if this storm hadn’t played fair.

Aksel reached the girl, knocked unconscious before that flash even hit. She didn’t look in great shape, and everyone seemed to agree that heading in was the best bet. So, Aksel knelt down, scooped her up, nestled her head onto his shoulder, and began the steadiest march he could muster back toward the community center.

"Don't worry," he began, slow and soft. "About a thing... cuz every little thing... gonna be alright...."

Sky sat up slowly, blinking like someone waking from a bizarre dream. His hair was a mess, his jumpsuit soaked, and his limbs were buzzing and tingling. Everything hurt, but he was alive, somehow. He glanced around at the others, relieved they were breathing, but annoyed he couldn’t even die dramatically.

He winced, brushing bits of ice out of his hair. “Of course this messed up my hair…” he muttered, voice scratchy.

Henry’s voice caught his attention. “Hey, Sky. How are you feeling?”

Sky turned to look at him, the words forming before he could stop them. “I feel like I made out with a power outlet, and then it dumped me halfway through.” He meant it to be funny, but his voice cracked halfway through.

He pushed himself upright and forced a chuckle. “Seriously though, I think the universe is trying to kill me. And not even in a fun, cinematic way. Just…‘Oops, lightning. Sucks to be you.’” He waved a hand in the air with a dramatic flourish, then winced from the motion. He paused. Then softer: “I’m fine. Really. Just… a little crispy.”

He smiled thinly, hiding everything behind it. His fingers twitched. For a second, something Something warm and electric zipped through his arm, then vanished just as fast. He glanced down, half expecting something, anything, to have changed. But no. Just paint. Just Sky. Just background noise again, even when people asked if he was okay.

Sky cleared his throat, forcing the smirk back into place. “I guess this means we’re not getting hazard pay, huh?”

Darkness

Pure, unending, and all-consuming.

That was what had taken Cait as her head knocked against the cement walk. She felt her eyes passing back and forth, looking for anything other than the veil of pitch black that had thrown itself over her face. Was she even seeing anything? Or were her eyes closed? She tried to move her arm, and then her leg; neither budged, weighed down as though literal tons had been added to them. No. Her muscles, her bones, every facet of strength had been taken from her; in that moment, her body had shut down, stripped of all but its most essential purposes. She lay there, unable to move or speak. But where the fuck is here? She was sure she hadn't left the lot of the Community Center. Was this "place" just a dream? A sightless vision brought about by her unconscious state?

Wait... She had felt numb; so much so that it hadn't registered with her until she began feeling something again. It started faintly as a gentle vibration passing through her body, resonating out from her centre like a ripple from a stone tosse dropped into a pond. The vibration intensified steadily, until it felt like something similar to an electric shock passing through her. That's right... the lightning. She recalled the bolting hitting her, falling and arcing with intent, almost as if it had meant to strike her specifically. With the increasing intensity of the vibration came something akin to noise: a low tone rumbling beneath her eardrums; the kind of pitch no ear could normally hear because the waking mind couldn't focus on it properly.

Cait felt herself groan as both the feeling through her body and the sound in her ears developed and changed. The low tone became drowned out be higher pitches layering in over it until she could barely hear it; eventually, the dull murmur of distinguishable voices, muffled as though she were listening from beneath water, sounded above the random, ringing tones. The vibrating sensation gave way to a sort of fatigue, and then to soreness; it peaked at an almost painful clip, like the sharp discomfort of tendonitis passing through every muscle of her body. In tandem, the vision of darkness faded, first to an ever-lightening gray, and eventually to a bright, hot white before more familiar paterns, shapes, and figures formed.

And then...

"Whoa!" Cait entire front side pressed against the warm surface she had fallen onto. She felt as though she had just been dropped; she didn't realize that as she came to, her body had lurched no less than an inch off the ground through no force she had produced. She rolled over onto her backside in time to find Prince standing over her. "Yeah, yeah. I'm awake." The pains she had been feeling began to subside, though some fatigue still lingered. "But I should probably go back to sleep." She grasped her forehead. "I feel like I have a migraine or something." She felt around the ground near her, splaying her arms and hands out frantically. With a sudden jolt, she put herself upright, ignoring the throbbing in her head.

She spun around, looked down, and scowled. Fuck... Her spliff had gotten caught underneath her when she fell, and now sat flattened on the ground, its contents coming loose from the roll. She tried to gather it back together, but it was too far gone to be brought back to a proper spliff. What remained when she was done was little more than a roach. She examined the stub of of a smoke, and shrugged. "Better than nothing." She sat herself more comfortably, and motioned for Prince to hand her his light, assuming he still had it. "So... the fuck happend? Where's the hardass? Did anyone else get struck?" She took a look around at her fellow 'troublemakers' and noted the answer to her own question; they were all lethargically getting themselves back onto their feet. "Eh. Don't answer that last one. Still... what happened? Like, I'm not the only one that thinks that was weird, right?" She directed her last question to the group, her head whipping about for some form of agreement or validation.
