I generally prefer to listen to ambient and instrumental tracks while I write, either that or lyrics I literally cannot understand. I find that if my mind begins to wander as I'm writing while listening to song lyrics, I'll sometimes start writing out what I'm listening to, rather than what I'm thinking about.

I'm pretty much in the same camp as this. Of late I'm preferable towards instrumental music or anything with either incomprehensible/giberish vocal lines, or otherwise lyrics that I can't make out due to distortion effects or language barriers. Lately my go-to tracks fall within the Post-Rock and Shoegaze genres, which, incidentally, have felt accurate to the mood for a few characters that I"ve been writing; particularly over in Heroes Rise.

Recently, I've realized that I can in fact write without music underscoring the experience. At this point, it's more about multitasking than anything else; there's only so many waking hours in a day, and writing and listening to music (specifically the music that I most enjoy listening to) are two things that I can do at the same time without feeling like I'm shortchanging my attention on either of them.

I love listening to music when writing!

I'm someone who also enjoys making thematic playlists for characters which I'll often listen to if writing a post from their perspective to help keep in their head and with the vibe.

I have an entire "ambiance" playlist on Spotify which is some of my favourite instrumental music that I use for art, writing, or anything where I really need to lock in.

Sometimes I will really fixate on a particular song because I feel it just matches what I need at the time.

I draw most of my inspiration from music, but I don't write while listening to it. I love my instrumental collections, orchestral, EDMs, Vanguard's trance, and so on, but I feel listening to them while writing is too distracting. Listening to music feels like processing a message to me, or understanding the meaning behind every beat and melody. For that, I need to be immersed, and I, or my brain, don't want to be disturbed by things that require brainpower like writing.

I can listen to music so long as what I'm doing doesn't need my full attention. I'm perfectly okay working on concepts/ideas I've already got notes on, menial tasks like spellchecking and formatting. Brainstorming and actually thinking about what to write, I prefer silence. Fewer distractions so my brain has the space to explore ideas.

I have a variety of stuff I listen to, in various playlists on Spotify. I have some that are themed to my writing mood, usually of soundtracks from movies, games, TV, anime, etc that put me in the mood to right epic and exciting adventure and battle scenes.
I have others that are more just general music that gets my imagination going and my mood up too.
I usually have something on in the background though, just because it helps me with getting the juices flowing.

Sometimes music works to help contextualize my concept, other times it serves as a distraction.

Not exactly. It can get distracting at times. Though, I do listen to music while I do other stuff like reading and, especially, editing.
