Great question! I would say that, technically, it falls under Dark Magic. Simply due to the fact that the Mage is altering their appearance.

However, provided the Mage is not drawing upon an external energy source such as the Earth, it would fall into fairly neutral magic. Especially if the end result isn’t malicious!

Perhaps a Mage has a totem or an enchanted jewel that they tap in to for shape-shifting?

Hey, I am tempted, are you only interested in royal mages or would an outside rebel be fine, too…? Preferably in the desert.
Whilst the royal family enjoys their life in luxury my charakter would have to fight for just enough water to survive,steal for a handful of bread, dry enough to suffocate you, and hope for better days. If this wasnˋt enough her magic fights to burst out. Oh how easy an life with magic would be, but she canˋt risk to ever use her powers, because if she did, she had to join the royal mages or eventually get hunted down like one of the desert foxes and killed, and who would take care of her little, so not magical, brother if it wasnˋt for her?
Donˋt tell her but it is yet to decide what happens to her brother, is he killed or simply dies because he lost the fight against harsh elements, what might cause her to try and attack the royals….or.. does he eventually sprout a bit of magical talent and they join the royal mages?

If you prefer royal mages(desert),I could think of a guy known as one of the royal mages commandors. He is a born fighter and protects the kingdom at all costs. He is the kingˋs son but only his family is permitted to know, what is why he lives under the mages as one of them.

A few words about the person behind: I do rpgs for nearly 18 years now and enjoy a good mixture of one by one and plenty players. Normally I love long posts and very vivid descriptions but there is a catch when it comes to me: I am German and as well, as I might deal with the reading part, I will never be a native speaker ,nor will my computer be. It is the first time for me in an english forum. I come with love and devotion for this hobby and tons of grammar, perhaps spelling mistakes(lots caused by the german auto correction). I might use more simple words but totally plan on developing with time.
Why an english forum you might ask? First of all, the german rpg base concentrates lately on real life and I want fantasy and adventures, not a nice shopping tour and a cup of coffee, secondly I want to develop my english writing skills.
Last but not least I want to answer the question „why donˋt you join the more simple rpgs?“ Well, my writers soul would dry out with short answers and a barely real play.
