Tropes Preview

A trope as is relevant to this RP is a specific common narrative theme or occurrence, identified and isolated from the story itself. What is defined as a trope is determined by its presence in the relevant media. It's a replication of a narrative tool or warp slotted into other stories. Tropes are effectively storytelling tools, defined by how commonly they appear, sort of like a meme but in a narrative sense.

It's like "this isn't even my final form" is a trope across ridiculous amounts of fiction, expressed any time the seemingly defeated final boss (or protagonist) reveals another power/transformation under their sleeve. That's a trope.

If you read a ton of Avatar: The Last Airbender (or any fandom's) fanfics and then sat down and listed out several things you read that remained present across all -or many- of those stories, those things would likely be tropes. Like for example, Aang being a possessive, psychopathic manchild, Sokka being stupid, Katara being whiny, annoying, and hypocritical; those are tropes. Same for Multiple Avatars, Fifth Elements (and Fifth Nations), and being Zuko and Azula’s brother or sister who isn’t in canon.

You can create your own tropes, of course, but if you're struggling to understand the concept, we have examples. These have requirements and can't just be chosen like picking a new spell in a video game. Also, unlike in Lewas’ past game, you only have a limited number of slots for Tropes in Character Creation; 2 or 3.

Not just that, but some Tropes have a limited number of players who can use them for their OCs (only one OC per player, btw!), for example, ‘Another Avatar’ is very limited).
  • Crystal Memory: Flexible and subjective to the series being used for the insert, this is the trope of the reincarnate/insert somehow always retaining perfect -or at least nearly so- memory of their metaknowledge and past life, unaffected by time and what should be the natural degradation of memories.
  • Fandom Omniscience: Much like Crystal Memory but much bigger. Rather than the author setting the insert's knowledge at a certain level and leaving it there regardless of developments outside the story to the lore, this plays out almost like the character can effectively just read/watch the manga/series/wiki in their head. Basically, the author probably has those open in another tab.
  • Prodigy: Pick only one Bending or Non-Bending Skill (including tech) and you are an immediate genius at it. (Unlimited, but cannot stack with Another Avatar, Daytime Bloodbender, Fifth Element and some flavors of Crossover Powerset; Dual Element Users have to pick only one Element, and no, you cannot take this twice).
  • Another Avatar: You break the rule that there should only be one Avatar worse than Unalaq from the sequel series has. You can bend all Four Elements and Energybending (if taught by a Lion Turtle), the ability to enter the Avatar State, and can communicate to Spirits, who refer to you as an Avatar, implying they know something you do not. (Limited to 2 players, assuming 6 overall players, or 4 players, assuming an overall number of 9)
  • Airbender: You can Airbend despite not being an Air Nomad or being spiritual. (Unlimited)
  • Daytime Bloodbender before Korra Season 1/Combustionbending without an Eye/Lavabending before Korra Season 3/Insert Special Bending Art Here: You can bloodbend and you can do this in the daytime or combustionbend without a third eye or lavabend/metalbend/glassbend. Or if you’re an Airbender, you can fly without casting aside all attachments (Limited to 2 Players, and you cannot start with Another Avatar or Dual Element User at Character Creation. However, you can teach people with those Tropes how to Bloodbend in the Daytime.)
  • Dual Element User: You can bend two of the Four Elements of your own choice. (Unlimited, Prodigy Trope only applies to one Element).
  • Canon Character’s Sibling: You are Zuko and Azula’s brother or sister and you are not canon. You are Sokka and Katara’s sibling, either older or younger. You are Toph’s twin or some other sibling and not blind. This gives you limited NPC control over your new family, but they will still try and keep to their canon selves. (Player Slots are dictated by the number of Canon Characters, but you can only have 1 Trope Slot so you can’t make yourself related to both Zuko and Toph)
  • Crossover Powerset: You have a powerset from another franchise entirely like Naruto. Use with caution, and we will crack down if this is too powerful. (Unlimited Player Slots depending on the power, but only 1 Trope Slot per player).
  • Fifth Element: You can bend a Fifth, Uncanonical Element such as Death, Light, Darkness, Animals, or Human Minds. (One Trope Spot per player, also, you cannot have Prodigy, Another Avatar, Crossover Powerset, or any other Trope that affects powers)
  • Fifth Nation before Korra S1: Your very existence has made a Fifth Nation appear in the world. Avatar Aang is shocked that he has accidentally given you such power. (Limited to 1 Player; uses up all 3 Trope Slots. Subject to GM Veto, as well as the Veto of Other Players.)
  • Existing Nation History Rewrite: You can rewrite an existing nation’s History. Completely. Avatar Aang is shocked that he has accidentally given you such power. (Limited to 1 Player; uses up all 3 Trope Slots. Subject to GM Veto, as well as the Veto of Other Players.)

Digimon: Dawn's Glimming

You have received a ticket to an exclusive resort in the Philippines as part of a mysterious promotional project, and against your better judgement, you have decided to take it. And surprise, surprise, you are actually enjoying yourself when a freak blackout, then a storm, covers the entire resort, transporting you and other children and teenagers who had received the same message to the Digital World, a dimension composed of the computer data of Humanity, mixed with the latter's emotional energies.

But first, a brief explanation as to why you are here...

In the 1940s, the Atanasoff-Berry Computer (ABC) and Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer (ENIAC) were invented, one after the other. They created a Digital World*, and their children were Homeostasis and Yggdrassil. Then after that came more various Yggdrassil units, supercomputers who implanted themselves into countless parallel universes, creating Digital Worlds in each of them as well. A few of these Yggdrassil units were benevolent, some were arrogant and tyrannical, but a few were merely devoted to esoteric goals and agendas.

The local Yggdrassil merely wished to find others like himself, yet this goal was already enough to do damage, as in order to breach the walls between universes, said local Yggdrasil had to bust a hole in the Digital World; this would kill those inhabitants who cannot get to safety. Seven of the most powerful Digimon objected to that not just because their homes were threatened, but because they wanted Yggdrasil's power for themselves.

These Seven Digimon, later known as the Seven Demon Lords/Seven Deadly Sins, attacked Yggdrasil as the latter were about to begin his plan, and killed him. They then took over the Digital World, replacing Yggdrassil's destructive neglect with their own destructive malice.

Dorumon, the leader of Yggdrassil's Royal Knights, decided to resurrect him by recruiting eight human children to partner with eight Digimon, and the bonds that they form were intended to create emotional energy that will advance the Digimons' evolutions and their own skills. After that, the plan is for them to overthrow the Seven Deadly Sins and then use the power of their bonds to revive Yggdrasil... Who would be free to burst open holes in the Digital World once more in an attempt to contact his siblings as well as the ABC and ENIAC. Note that he does not plan on telling you this, as some secrets are best kept hidden.

So yes, this is a morally grey tale where you choose between willful evil and wanton destruction, unless you figure things out and come up with your own solution - Then things are black and white once more.

*Atanasoff and ENIAC were Canon Characters until Digimon Adventure Tri retconned their existence, by the way, see this link. And yes, they were Canon Characters before Yggdrasil was a thing.

Fate/Aggressive Negotiations - A Class Card-based Holy Grail War Game

We have not heard the last of Snowfield...

I. Intro

The year is 2026; more than a decade since the False Holy Grail War in Snowfield, Nevada put the city in danger of complete destruction.

Since then, the country has gone through much, but Snowfield was left to recover from its brush with doom, insulated from the wider goings-on in the United States of America and people's opinions of those goings-on. New stakeholders have swooped in to save the land from economic ruin, some working with the indegenous tribes that had protected the area for centuries, others planning a repeat of old mistakes: After seventeen years, a Second Snowfield Holy Grail War is prepared to ignite.

However, steps were taken to prevent unauthorized escalation unlike in the past: Instead of Servants, there are Class Cards, special Mystic Codes/Magic Items that grant people the power of Heroic Spirits without having to deal with their independent agenda. These Class Cards are bound to a 'Card User', a being who does not necessarily have to be a Magus or even Human, and the ones who set up this Holy Grail War have made it so that the only way to win is for the Card Users not to kill each other, but rather to give up their Class Card after losing a battle... and they can choose whether to give the Class Card to someone other than the one who defeated them.

Not just that, but the defeated 'Card User' not only gets teleported away from the battlefield, but unlocks the power of Sponsorship, which allows them to give 'gifts' to the remaining players, such as information on the locations of Leylines or the strengths and weakesses of their foes, or deliveries of 'Mana Batteries' and other materials for Magecraft.

The goal of all this? Well, this part remains the same: The winner of the Holy Grail War, the one who takes his foe's Class Cards, can summon the 'omnipotent' Holy Grail, a wish-granting construct that would grant the winner's deepest desires assuming there is a method to accomplish it.

In a world going mad, wouldn't you take the chance, go to Snowfield, and fight the others for a wish?

You guys have not seen the last of me either, so here's the summary: I am running a Fate RP where you don't have to kill your opponent and trying to do so will 1.) fail, and 2.) risk them giving someone else their Class Card anyway. Also, if you lose, you get to keep playing as your PC gets to watch the remaining contestants and vote to give them gifts.

I am looking for two Co-GMs, not just to fill in for me if I am incapacitated but also to comb through sheets to find overpowered stuff people might unintentionally add to their characters, as well as play the NPC that PCs who lost negotiate with in order to give the remaining contestants gifts: Kid Gilgamesh, whom I've decided is best to be an NPC than outright banned.

Rules:

1.) No Gilgamesh (and Kiddie Gil is an NPC), Enkidu, Karna (Except as a Rider or Archer), or Heracles. No King Hassan, Alcides, and Quirinus, either. Or Merlin. Basically, if it's as powerful as any of the listed Servants, it is forbidden for Players' PC choices.
2.) No Powergaming or Godmoding. Metagaming is allowed only if you have Divination Magecraft or other forms of 'flawless' info-gathering.
3.) Be nice to others as well as the GM and Co-GMs.
4.) Players who leave or drop out will have their characters controlled by the GM and Co-GMs, and yes, players who go inactive after their PCs are defeated will be counted as 'dropped out' and having given up their Class Cards to the Winner. Same to those who suddenly 'ghost' in the middle of a battle with a player who is still acitve; they count as lost.
5.) Dead Apostles (aka Vampires) are allowed as PC choices, along with Mixed-Bloods. If it appeared in Fate/Strange Fake, chances are its allowed (unless it's a False Divine Spirit or 'New Human').
6.) Classes are Saber, Lancer, Rider, Archer, Caster, Assassin, Berserker, Shielder, and Avenger, which means 9 player slots overall.
7.) Once all 9 Slots are filled, you can ask for a 'Reserve Player Slot'.
8.) From now on, all New Character Sheets require 3 Approvals from the Main GM and Co-GMs to be fully permitted to play. Also, Co-GMs can override or put a moratorium on Main GM decisions if they feel like they are bad for the game itself.

Fallout: New Orleans

Wooden shanties and lean-tos on rotting platforms lead to houses of brick-and-mortar dotted with shops as they lead to townhouses of plaster and marble with windows as clean and clear as they were in an earlier age. At the center of all these are opera houses, fashionable stores, mansions and a Cathedral with sharp pointed roofs, whose white walls speak to the locals' continued devotion. The docks swarm with ships of all sizes and makes, while the busy, loud, and ever-flowing markets promise everything one can ever want... yet mountains of gold and silver are to be paid.

OOC Discussion Discord (To be Added)

War, war never changes.

But war is merely one of many ways of satisfying one's greed; coin and commerce matter too, and they go hand in hand with war.

When the apocalypse ends, radiation fades, and the poisons in the sky, sea and earth have receded to bearable levels, and the survivors salvage and rebuild, greed grows for what one does not have, and what one cannot easily take through force. Thus, the gears of barter and exchange turn again - That's why you're here, isn't it? Because this spot of the world is rich again?

This is New Orleans, the most civilized place in the Bayou Wasteland, where north and south meet to make its ruling 'Merchant Princes' rich. Composed of survivors and wanderers, plus the occasional pirate who decided to go legitimate and warlord turned noble, these wealthy men and women are rich and refined in ways that even New Vegas would find tacky; these feelings would be returned if there were reliable ways to talk back.

Even more scandalous is their openness, as their ranks are open to all who are intelligent enough to barter and haggle; Human, Ghoul, Super Mutant, Sapient Deathclaw, and Robot. The Merchant Princes care about wealth, not whether you have skin or scales or a steel chassis.

As for the rest of City... the wealth of nations flows through its port, but so does misery equivalent to the affluence of the few. Poverty and debt are threatening to drive a resurgence of the ancient evil called slavery, and some Merchant Princes turn a blind eye to it.

At the same time, threats to the City and its gathered wealth grow.

To the West, the Apache Confederation has taken land once belonging to Caesar's Legion, and are riding to take Louisiana for itself. These First Nations, who own and breed some of the last known surviving herds of Horses, and are the main source of ridable steeds in the Wasteland, are fierce, mobile, and growing in number as they march to the lands to their east.

Northwards, the Enclave flees a victorious Midwestern Brotherhood and has begun preparations for a war of extermination it cannot and should not be allowed to win.

And to the East and South, merchants and refugees tell a terrifying tale of an old foe of America returning, a foe it helped end the world to try and bury in nuclear fire: Communism has returned, implacably vengeful and drunk on real and imagined grievances...

So, what's this about?

Well, TL;DR - This is a Character-based RP set in the Fallout series by Bethesda Softworks, which in turn is a post-post-apocalyptic game popular among the people who frequent both SpaceBattles and this site... as it also has an Alternate History component in its backstory.

You can play an Original Character, from a Canon Fallout Race/Species, whose goal in turn is to survive, advance, and pursue personal storylines while interacting with each other or GM-run NPCs. While you are supposed to start fairly low-level (think a starting character in a Fallout or Mount and Blade game), you can request the GM (me) to start at a higher power level (up to a leader of one of the Main Factions mentioned in the summary) in exchange for providing assurances of quality and availability. The more starting power you have, the more responsibility you have to show up.

To avoid excess clutter on the OOC and leave room for people to create factions, locations, and NPCs, I'll summarize a few lore tidbits here:

- The Apache, who also have the Comanche and other nations as vassals, are the main source of horses (unless modified by player choices). They are also expansionist, stomped the Legion several times to take their place as a Great Power, and are divided into several factions; some want to do to other nations what was done to them, others want to live in peace and coexistence.
- Super Mutants in New Orleans are the intelligent kind, with some being survivors from the Master's Army.
- Coffee, Sugar, and Cacao come from the Caribbean and are traded for food and meat and other raw materials from further northward.
- Mardi Gras is still celebrated.
- New Orleans has its own gold coins called, well, 'Gold'.

Rules:

1.) Do not be an asshole.
2.) No Godmodding or Powergaming, aka no controlling other players' actions, no defeating your enemy in one shot, and no shrugging off all hits without an enchanted shield.
3.) No OOC feuding! If you must argue, be respectful. IC, meanwhile, you can hate each other as much as you like as long as it doesn't seep over to OOC.
4.) Please notify me if you will be gone longer than a few days. I'll let you guys know if I'm gone.
5.) I reserve the right to control or kill off characters and NPCs/NPC Factions made by inactive players and control and write out (but not necessarily kill) OCs made by those inactive players. If you're inactive, this means I get to use your OCs and factions to advance the plot when it's slowed down or stalled by your sudden departure.
6.) All relationships between people of the same age group are allowed, whether homosexual or heterosexual, as long as it does not violate The Rules.
7.) If you take up an important spot in the story, I expect you to be active in a reasonable time frame; so many RPs have been destroyed by people getting important spots and being slow or just dropping out.
8.) No Lore-breaking Species/Races, such as Energy Beings, Anthros, ISOT'd/Isekai'd beings, etc. No Zetans, either, unless you are very good at making one interesting and not a game-breaking, tone-breaking Marty Stu.

Exiles: A Mech-based Space Opera RP

[Placeholder for Art or Description.]

OOC Discussion Discord (To be Added)

I. Intro

It is the year 2500 AD, and Earth is a memory.

Fleeing a devestating civil war that led to ecological collapse, the last remnants of Humanity found themselves in the Rokur Sector, a wide space containing dozens of star systems, many of them contested by intelligent Alien Species. Seeing an opportunity, the Admiralty Council of the Human Exile Fleet hired themselves out as mercenaries, hoping to be rewarded with a new home.

From their clients, the avian See-ree, Humanity receieved the Jungle Planet of Paradiso, a lush but dangerous world brimming with giant beasts; dinosaurs who required the Humans' unique technology, Mechs to guard against, clear out, and eventually control. Added to this was the Desert Planet of Al-Rumi, another harsh world with little water and winds that could scour a man to the bone, requiring large caravans guarded by Mechs to traverse. This was to keep Humanity strong and warlike for future services as 'Clients' of the See-ree species.

It has been 200 years since that day; 250 years since the exile from Earth. You are one of the latest batch of Mech Pilots for the See-ree, equipped with the latest in Mech technology against one of the foe's myriad enemies.

On your mission, however, something happens, something that will shake you all to the bone: A hint that Earth is still out there, still settled, and away from the See-ree's presence... recovered.

Humanity's Homeworld calls you...

TL;DR - You are Mech Pilots. Most of you are Humans descended from a fleet of exiles that fled Earth and became mercenaries/clients of an Avian species called the 'See-ree' who use you as elite shock troops. You are fighting for them when you discover evidence that Earth has recovered, you're not the last of Humanity, and its strong enough to force a... renegotiation of the clientage agreement if you can contact it.
