Moments like this always force me to really grit my teeth and resist the urge to break character.

In most cases, I'd be the first one to be like, "Hey. Maybe don't be mean to the friendly NPC who is giving away free stuff. If for no other reason than because this module seems to love to punish people for being munchkins in the most bizarre ways possible."
