Max

@Lady Arya@Ducksworth

Max had been about to reply to Piper when she heard a loud thud, and looked behind her to what was a very strange scene. Most of the room hadn't reacted yet, some kids had turned their heads. Apparently, one kid had cut himself doing something or another, Max thought she'd saw him grab a knife when she had walked in. The kid who had cut himself was apparently being attended to by another kid, taller and rambling about something. Max couldn't really hear what they were saying over the noise coming from all other corners of the room. Stick a bunch of kids in a room and it's bound to be a bit noisy. Especially since there were approximately ten different conversations happening at the same time. Max kept looking around for the source of the loud thud, which appeared to be another kid that had...face planted the floor? Huh, maybe he didn't handle blood so well.

Max shook their head and looked back at Piper, "I guess we should consider ourselves lucky for choosing painting. Only cuts we're gonna get are paper cuts. Though, I got this one between my fingers once...nasty. I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy,"

They shook their head again and sighed, turning their attention back to the paper in front of them, wondering what to paint. They still hadn't even made a single brush stroke. Some crafts time this was turning out to be, though, she wasn't surprised. She was just simply not a crafty person, why couldn't their mom have sent them to skateboard camp instead. Was skateboard camp even a thing? Max wasn't sure, but they already missed the feeling of the board underneath their feet, the feel of the wind in their face. There was just something serene about riding a skateboard while the music blared in your ears as you whipped around the pavement and just enjoyed life. It was the one place Max felt nothing could touch her, nothing could hurt her...well, except her own stupidity or lack of awareness. She'd hurt herself plenty of times just not reacting fast enough.

Max turned back to look at the kids that were bleeding, and then sighed. She had bandaids in her bag, she really should offer them..

"Be right back, don't let anyone steal my seat," She said and then sighed softly, hoisting her bag onto her shoulder and walking over to where the boy lay on the floor. She reached down and grabbed his arm, trying to help him into a standing position.

"It's alright, I got ya. Take it from someone who has fallen off their board many many times, you're gonna be fine. But ya can't just lay there forever," She said and then smiled softly, rolling her eyes in a playful manner. "I've got bandaids in my bag. Do ya want rainbow or tye-dye?"

Piper McAllister...
....................................................

She nearly had the bag of bracelets open when she heard the commotion on the other side of the cabin. The kid with the knife had his arm raised and she saw the blood streaking down his arm. “Yeah, shouldn’t have given him the knife…” Piper thought to herself, shaking her head in disbelief. Her gaze moved back to the bag of bracelets before she noticed the noise nearby. The girl seated next to her heard the same. As they both turned and saw another kid, laying on the floor. She met skateboard girl’s gaze and nodded in response. “Painting can be dangerous. Especially if it gets in the eye…” She responded back. They both turned back to their respective project, Piper slowly putting the bag of bracelets back in her bag. It was too soon for that anyway. The bravery slipping away.

Minding her own business, she kept painting then out of the corner of her eye, she saw the girl seated next to her pull out a box of bandaids and head off toward the kid that face planted. They mentioned something about a seat. “Oh sure…ok…” She said quickly watching them head off.

As if on queue, Jenny the one that handed the knife to the kid earlier, came busting through the side screen door. Her face frantic at the site. She rushed over to the kid holding his hand high like he had a question to ask. She took over for the other that had put cloth over the wound. “Remy? Right? Thank you for your quick action, I got it from here. Go wash your hands…with soap.” The counselor nodded toward a sink.

Jenny pulled back the cloth, the cut didn’t look too deep. Thankfully. “ Alright, let’s get you to the infirmary…get you cleaned up..” Jenny mentioned to the small pale kid.

Piper sat there watching the scene unfold as the back screen door opened. A male counselor and the new kid walked right into the chaos. Brody was his name, she recognized him from last year. He motioned to an empty seat for the new kid before making his way toward one that face planted.

“Dexter, mate… you gotta be more careful…” He kneeled beside the skateboard girl who seemed to be pulling out bandaids. “Ah, a person after my own heart. You get the prepared award, today.” He grinned at them before turning back to Dexter. “You will live, let’s get you to the nurse anyway.”

“Brody…can you take him too? Might want to tell Meg..” Jenny mentioned.

The counselors turned to one another, seeing they each had an injured kid. “Day three and we get a two-fer…” The male counselor laughed. “Keep that arm up…and you keep a hand on that nose…no dripping on my watch…and no Meg, his sister doesn’t need to know. Kid isn’t dying.” Motioning the two kids toward the door.

Piper leaned her head into her hand, it wasn’t lunch yet but the day was definitely more interesting than yesterday. She sighed softly turning back to her painting. It was nearly done but the inspiration wasn’t there anymore. The cabin was louder after the events and she couldn’t concentrate, she enjoyed the quiet. Piper moved the canvas aside as she turned her head toward the window. Outside was calling.

“I know that was exciting and maybe a little scary. Let’s focus on those creative ideas you have going. Just thirty minutes before the next activity. Jenny said before shuffling the campers back to their tables, urging them back to their tasks.

Barely inside the door, Matt took another step into the Recreation Cabin when one of the other camp counsellors, a girl in a yellow shirt, hurried toward Brody and pointed back at the tables.

“That’s your crew,” she said with a relieved chuckle. “JJ’s got a gash in his arm, and Dexter just found out he doesn’t like the sight of blood.”

Before she could finish, Brody was already moving, weaving between the tables, off to check on the boys.

Matt stopped beside the empty spot on the bench Brody had pointed out for him and watched the commotion unfold. Unsure what else to do, he slipped his left hand into his baseball glove. With his right, he began working the baseball into the pocket of the worn leather mitt, squeezing, pushing, and twisting, the way he always did when he was thinking or worried.

He studied the scene in front of him. The younger boy with the cut was already being looked after by an older camper and that girl with the skateboard, the one he had noticed earlier.

Another boy was lying on his side nearby, a counsellor offering him a paper towels for his nose. Brody had his full attention on him and Matt watched as the boy's eyes slowly opened before squeezing shut again a second later. If it had been the first time Matt had seen something like this, he probably would have been worried. Bloody noses weren't that uncommon but last summer, one of his teammates had collapsed in the outfield during a baseball tournament. Heat stroke someone said. Then, just a few months ago, one of the girls in gym class had taken a dodgeball to the head and crumpled to the floor. Everyone had said it was a concussion.

Now, watching the boy on the floor, Matt noticed him rubbing the back of his head. He couldn't help wondering if this kid had a concussion too. Holding the bloodied cloth to his nose, Matt knew the boy had to be suffering right now.

Restless and needing something to do, Matt started wandering around the cabin. He knew enough to stay away from the huddle of campers and counsellors that had gathered around the injured boys, so instead he drifted from table to table, sizing up the other campers, checking out the art projects spread out in front of each and every one of them.

He chuckled to himself when he spotted one boy sketching the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. When the boy glanced up, Matt smiled.

“That's really good. Raphael’s the best.”

At another table, a couple of girls sat weaving brightly coloured strands of thread into friendship bracelets. Matt recognized them right away, the girls at school were always making them for one another.

Off to the side, he noticed another camper, a red-haired girl, probably about his age. She was looking out the window, but it wasn’t her that caught his attention. Matt’s eyes moved instead to the painting she had been working on at the easel.

He had been impressed by the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle drawing earlier, but this was different. The painting was detailed in a way that made him pause. He remembered something his teacher had once said about real artwork having “intricate details,” and he knew this was exactly what she meant.

He leaned a little closer, studying it more carefully. The brushstrokes weren’t messy like his would have been, and there weren’t any drips of paint running down the page. Not a single stick figure. Not even a bird that looked like a V in the sky.

“Wow,” he said quietly. “That’s… really really good.”

He hesitated, then added softly, “Like… way better than mine.”

Piper McAllister...
....................................................

Piper rested her chin in the palm of her hand, her half-finished painting pushed off to the side of the table. The cabin had settled back into its usual rhythm after the excitement, but the constant chatter still lingered in the air, making it difficult to focus. Instead of forcing another brushstroke, she found herself staring out the open window. Beyond the screen, the lake shimmered beneath the mid morning sun. A light breeze rippled across the water, carrying the scent of pine and fresh lake air into the cabin. The docks stretched out into the water where, just that morning, she'd sat alone sketching the sunrise. It had been peaceful then. Quiet. She missed the quiet. Her eyes followed the shoreline before a voice beside her gently pulled her back.

“Wow, That’s… really really good.”

Piper blinked, turning away from the window. The new kid stood beside her table. He looked as though he'd spent the last few minutes debating whether to say anything before finally gathering the courage. His attention wasn't on her. It was on the painting she'd left sitting off to the side. Compliments always caught Piper off guard. Most campers glanced at her artwork for a second before moving on. Others simply assumed she spent all her time drawing because she didn't have much else to say. A small smile tugged at the corner of her mouth.

"Thanks." She glanced toward the painting before looking back out the window for a brief moment. Before she turned back to the new kid, the bull horn blasted outside. More chaos. The sound of chairs scrapping against wood, echoes of cleaning instructions rang out but fallen to deaf ears. Campers snatched up backpacks and projects, talking over one another as they hurried toward both screen doors.

“I call first canoe!"

“Last one there has to wear the life jacket that's too big!"

The cabin emptied almost instantly. Piper laughed quietly under her breath as the stampede rushed past her. She took her time rinsing her brush, slipping her sketchbook into her backpack before carefully lifting her painting to let it dry. Placing it in a spot, she knew no one would touch it.

Piper looked toward the sunlight spilling through the doorway. Beyond the cabins, she could already hear counselors calling instructions and the distant laughter echoing across the Lake. She slid her backpack over one shoulder. A faint smile tugged at the corner of her mouth. She stepped out into the warm afternoon, following the stream of campers down the winding path toward the docks, where the water sparkled beneath the summer sun and the next adventure was already waiting.

The sound was loud enough to make Matt jump. One long, loud blast boomed through the camp, and with the sound of the bullhorn, campers jumped from their seats and everyone started teeming toward the doorways.

“Canoes,” called out one of the girls.

Two of the boys nearby answered back, “Come on, let’s get to the red one. It’s the fastest.”

Unsure what to do, Matt looked back to Brody, hoping for some direction, but the counsellor was still focussed on the injured boys, helping them get to their feet. Turning back to the doorway, he saw every other kid moving through the doors and heading down to the beach. Squeezing his baseball glove a little harder, he pushed the ball deep into the palm and started to follow the crowd.

Shuffling slowly, Matt made his way through the door and down the stairs of the recreation cabin. Pausing for a moment, he watched the red-haired girl with the crazy-good artwork pass by, adjusting her backpack on her shoulders, knowing exactly where to go. Turning around, he looked back at the cabin. No one else was coming, and there was no choice but to continue.

Holding the baseball in his hand, Matt began to toss it into the air. Keeping one eye on the path ahead, he continued along the winding trail, but every step or two he lobbed the ball upward and counted the seconds until it landed back in his mitt. Distracted for a moment by the towering evergreen tress and the sights around him, he paused to take it all in. One more time, he threw it a little higher, and when it landed easily in his glove he looked up and noticed he had lost sight of the artist girl. He gripped the ball and started to jog a little faster toward the docks.

The winding trail began to slope downhill toward the lake, and the campers gathered together in groups, laughing and calling out to one another. With his destination in sight, Matt relaxed again, and every now and then he tossed the ball a little higher, his eyes following it before dropping back to the path.

Ahead of him, he spotted the red-haired girl from the crafts cabin. She walked at her own speed, her backpack slung over one shoulder, seemingly in no hurry to reach the docks.

Matt quickened his pace when he saw the canoes and heard the excitement near the water. Just as he reached the bottom of the hill, another kid darted across the trail in front of him. Matt sidestepped to avoid him, but his toe caught a tree root hidden beneath the pine needles, and he stumbled forward.
The baseball popped out of his hand, bounced once on the hard-packed path, skipped between two pairs of feet before rolling to a stop against the heel of the red-haired girl's running shoe.

Matt froze for half a second, wondering if anyone else had noticed.

Piper McAllister...
....................................................

Piper stood on the shoreline. The chaos had erupted. Kids grabbing canoes, others jumping into the swimming zone. Counselors shouting safety instructions. It was all too much. Her hands gripped the straps of her backpack. She wished she was back with the sunrise. Quiet. Still. Just her and her sketch book. As her eyes darted across the lake her memories brought up one of the camping trips she'd taken with her dad years ago, before the remarriage. They were settled in their favorite spot, tucked between tall pines and far enough away from everything that the nights were completely dark. Her dad had spent the afternoon trying to convince her to swim with him.

She had been younger then. Brave enough—or stubborn enough—to follow him farther than she should have. The water had only reached her waist when the ground suddenly disappeared beneath her feet. One second, her toes were digging into the soft mud. The next, there was nothing.

Piper slipped beneath the surface before she could even scream. The lake swallowed every sound, replacing the world with murky green water and a terrible, muffled silence. She kicked wildly, reaching for something—anything—but her hands found nothing. Something brushed against her leg, and panic completely took over. She didn't know which way was up. Then a hand closed around her arm. Her dad pulled her above the surface and carried her back toward shore while she coughed and clung to him, refusing to let go even after her feet touched solid ground again.

After that, she never went farther than the shoreline. Her dad never forced her. Instead, he'd sat beside her on the shore, and together they'd skipped rocks across the surface until the sun disappeared behind the trees. It was still one of her favorite memories with him. But it hadn't made her any less afraid of the water.

A small bump against the back of her heel pulled Piper back to the present. She glanced down to find a baseball resting against the back of her shoe. Bending down, she picked it up and turned it over once in her hand before looking toward the boy nearby.

"Lose something?" She stated.

She tossed the ball gently toward him, waiting until he caught it before offering a small smile.

"You're the new kid, right?"

Piper had recognized him from the parking lot, saying goodbye to his family, this morning. Then later, when he complimented her artwork.

"It's not always that crazy around here. The knife, fainting…” She paused, glancing toward the arts and crafts cabin behind them. "Well... usually." A hint of amusement crossed her face.

"Camp's actually pretty great. Once you figure out where everything is and which counselors to avoid before they've had breakfast."

She adjusted the strap of her bag on her shoulder.

"I'm Piper.”

Matt watched as the ball rolled towards the girl and settled at the heel of her shoe. He could almost hear the voices of his two best friends teasing and making their opinions known.

Tobias would have cringed, reminded him that girls have cooties, and that the ball would need to be disinfected. Mackenzie, on the other hand, would have laughed, said something like “smooth,” and then told him to go talk to the girl, maybe ask her out.

Matt knew everything was changing in his world. He wasn’t like either of his friends. Mack, who was exactly four months older than Matt, was always talking about girls now, especially Kelly Kapowski from Saved by the Bell. He wanted to watch MTV all the time and kept talking about going to the mall to check out the girls who worked at Orange Julius.

Tobias wasn’t ready for any of that. He only wanted to play sports. Girls still had cooties and definitely germs. When Melissa Jameson told him she liked him, he stayed home from school for three days, five if you include the weekend, and he didn’t want anything to do with her after that.

Matt was somewhere in the middle, he figured girls were... well... just girls. He wasn’t afraid of girls like Tobias, but he wasn’t like Mackenzie, ready to have a girlfriend and hoping every birthday party would be a boy-girl party and include seven minutes in heaven.

When the red-haired girl turned around and picked up the ball, Matt was ready to apologize, but when the girl asked if he had lost the ball, he only nodded, and before he could say sorry, she tossed it back with an easy underhand throw, and it landed in his glove.

He was surprised when she asked if he was the new kid. It wasn’t the question that surprised him, but that she had noticed him. He looked at her again and nodded. “Yeah, I just got here today. I’m going to be here all summer.”

When Piper laughed about the chaos in the recreation cabin, Matt let out a small breath and chuckled back. “There was a lot of blood. When that one kid fainted, I…” He stopped, realizing how silly it probably sounded, but he saw the red-haired girl was still waiting for him to finish. “I thought we were going to need an ambulance or something.”

As soon as she introduced herself, Matt answered back. “I’m Matt ... and I’m sorry about the baseball. I didn’t mean to hit you with it.”

Before Piper had a chance to reply, he looked at her and then bit his lip. After a second, he asked, "I'm not even sure what I'm supposed to do now. Do I need to find a counsellor, or do people just grab a canoe?"

Piper McAllister...
....................................................

"An ambulance? No, not yet, at least."

Piper glanced back toward the crafts cabin as though half expecting another camper to come stumbling out covered in blood.

"It hasn't been that bad here in, like, twenty years or something. Something about... things in the woods."

She shrugged casually before looking back at Matt.

"Don't worry. There's nothing scary in the woods. It's just a story the counselors make up so you don't wander off and get lost."

At least, Piper was pretty sure that was all it was. She'd heard enough stories about Camp Wyaconda over the years to know that every camper had their own version. Strange noises after dark. Shadows between the trees. Campers who swore they'd seen something moving beyond the cabins. Piper had never believed any of it. Woods made noises. Animals lived in them. People's imaginations got considerably more creative after sunset. That was all.

Probably.

Matt seemed okay to her. Nice enough, anyway. He had even apologized for the baseball, despite it barely touching her. Then, almost immediately, he'd started asking about what he was supposed to do next. That made her smile. Being the new kid had to be strange. Everyone else seemed to move around camp as though they already knew exactly where they belonged.

"Each cabin has a schedule for the day. It's mostly so we don't overcrowd the activity areas. Safety first and all that." She nodded toward the lake.

"Most of the summer campers are together right now. See? Some are swimming, and everyone else is fighting over the canoes."

From where they stood, campers were already gathering along the shoreline. A group had rushed toward the swimming area while others crowded around the racks of paddles and life jackets. Piper watched them for a moment.

"You just do what you feel like doing. No one's going to force you into anything."

She shrugged before looking back at him. At least, that was how camp was supposed to work. Piper paused. She wasn't entirely sure what came next. Normally, this was the part where she would smile, wave, and find somewhere quiet to sit with her sketchbook. Small talk had never been something she was particularly good at. Silence was easier. You couldn't accidentally say something stupid if you weren't talking. But she had promised her dad one thing before coming to camp. Try to make a friend or two. Piper shifted her weight from one foot to the other.

"So... uh..."

Great start, she thought. She tucked a loose strand of red hair behind her ear and glanced at the baseball still in Matt's hand.

"Baseball." Another excellent contribution to the conversation. Piper almost laughed at herself.

"My dad likes the Braves. He says they're going all the way this year." She paused, her brow furrowing slightly. "Whatever that means."

She knew what it meant, technically. Her dad had explained it enough times. She simply couldn't understand how anyone could become so invested in watching people stand around waiting for someone to hit a ball.

"I like soccer, though. Maybe because there's more running." A small smile appeared. "I like running. A lot."

That was probably an understatement. Running was easy. There was always somewhere ahead of you to go. A trail to follow. Another turn to reach. When she ran, she didn't have to think about what to say or whether she was supposed to be talking. She could just move. Piper glanced toward Matt again, hoping she hadn't completely ruined her attempt at conversation.

"So, I'm guessing the baseball means you actually play?"

“Cool,” Matt exclaimed, when Piper mentioned the stories and legends of the camp.

But when she quickly added, "Don't worry. There's nothing scary in the woods. It's just a story the counsellors make up so you don't wander off and get lost,” he frowned just a little and answered, “Aww, I knew it was too good to be true.”

Turning his head, he gazed out towards the trees that guarded the two ends of the beach. The enormous evergreen trees stood like sentinels, watching over a kingdom, and immediately Matt thought of the Old Forest in The Lord of the Rings. Remembering the place where Frodo met Tom Bombadil, his mind began racing. He already had the title for his next story … The Guardians of the Woods.

Looking around, Matt saw more and more of the canoes being pulled out and taken into the water. Piper didn’t seem like she was in any hurry, and he relaxed just a little as she began to explain the camp. When she nodded towards the campers, he noticed the kids who were swimming, some wearing life jackets, some using inner tubes. Seeing the boys wrestling on the floating dock made him laugh and he thought about last summer when his family had gone camping and he and his sister had tried to push his brother Danny into the lake.

As soon as Piper mentioned baseball, Matt looked back at her, with a hopeful expression. Maybe she played the game. Maybe she knew who Bret Saberhagen and Mark Davis were. When she mentioned her dad liked the Braves, Matt grinned, "My dad says they're getting better. They've got Tom Glavine and he's awesome."

Before he could ask if she played baseball, Piper talked about soccer and mentioned she liked running. Excited about every sport and knowing a little about every league he grinned, “Did you watch the World Cup last summer? West Germany was so good.”

Piper just smiled back and when she asked if he played baseball, he answered quickly. “Yeah, I play on the Cubs. I’m a shortstop but I like soccer too. I sort of play every sport. Baseball, football, soccer. I even tried hockey but I’m not very good at skating.”

Realizing he was talking too much, he remembered his sister’s words and her advice before camp. Not everybody likes sports like you do. So don’t talk to everybody like you are with Danny or your buddies. Maybe you’re going to learn something new when you go to that place.

Remembering the artwork he'd seen back in the recreation hall, Matt asked, "What about you? Do you mostly do art, or do you play sports too?"

Before Piper could answer, one of the counsellors blew the whistle again, and the sound immediately caught everyone’s attention.

Matt glanced toward the water, then back at Piper. Had he missed something? Was there something everyone else knew that he didn’t?

“So what’s that about?” he asked. “Do we have to go down there too?”

Piper McAllister...

....................................................

Piper smiled a little brighter than she had expected. There was something nice about hearing someone talk about something they genuinely enjoyed. She glanced down at the baseball still resting comfortably in Matt's hand before looking up at him.

"In a few months it's the Women's World Cup. It's in China this year." Her expression brightened in a way it hadn't during the rest of their conversation. "I'm excited for that." She paused, almost as if debating whether to say more before deciding she might as well. "Michelle Akers is incredible. She's everywhere on the field. She's one of the toughest players to ever play the game. She is a huge inspiration and why I like playing midfield.“ A faint grin crossed her face. "I think she's just really fun to watch."

A whistle blew in the distance.

“So what’s that about?” he asked. “Do we have to go down there too?”

"Looks like someone broke the rules." She replied back as they both instinctively turned their heads.

Near the end of one of the docks, a counselor was waving both arms over his head while shouting toward two canoes drifting farther from shore. Piper narrowed her eyes. One canoe rocked sharply as a camper stood, paddle raised in the air. The other canoe swerved sideways, trying to avoid whatever ridiculous stunt was about to happen. Another whistle pierced the air. The counselor's voice carried across the water.

“Sit down! Both of you! Now!"

A few campers on the dock stopped what they were doing to watch. Piper folded her arms. She shook her head at the commotion. One of the campers swung the paddle—not hard enough to do any real damage, but enough that the counselor immediately pointed both canoes back toward shore. Piper let out a quiet sigh.

"Someone thought it'd be funny to sword fight with paddles."

She watched the counselor motion emphatically toward the dock while another hurried over to intercept the returning canoes.

"Yep..." she muttered. "Somebody's about to lose canoe privileges."

Camp had rules, and counselors rarely made exceptions when someone put another camper at risk. She shifted her backpack higher onto her shoulder before turning back to Matt. The excitement around the docks was already pulling more campers toward the commotion, eager to see who was getting into trouble. Piper had never understood that. Crowds always seemed to move toward chaos. She preferred moving away from it.

"You can go watch if you want." She gave a small shrug.

Without waiting for an answer, she turned on her heel and started walking along the shoreline instead. The farther she got from the docks, the quieter it became. The shouting faded behind her, replaced by the gentle rhythm of waves brushing against the sand and the breeze whispering through the pine trees. That was more her speed. If she was going to spend the morning by the lake, she'd much rather find a quiet place to sit than watch someone get lectured for acting like an idiot with a canoe paddle.

The voice was loud and carried from the dock up to the pathway where Piper and Matt were standing.

“Sit down! Both of you! Now!"

The counsellor wasn’t big, but her voice was commanding. Matt turned a little and watched as the campers continued duelling with paddles. Sparring with their makeshift wooden swords, the two boys were laughing, having the time of their lives. The pony-tailed counsellor blew her whistle again and began to move closer to the edge of the water. When Matt saw the scowl on her face, he shook his head, “Oh those guys are in trouble.”

He laughed out loud, when Piper added, "Yep... Somebody's about to lose canoe privileges."

Not wanting to miss the action, Matt looked back to the docks. Almost every camper had their eyes on the two boys standing in their canoes, wobbling as they tried to maintain their balance. Kids in the lake froze at the sound of the whistle, and most stood waist-deep in the water, waiting to see what would happen.

"You can go watch if you want." Piper added.

“You coming too?” he asked.

When he didn’t hear a reply, he turned back to Piper but the red-haired girl had already pivoted away and started to walk toward the shoreline, leaving him on his own. For a second or two, he looked at her and wondered why she had left. Had he said something wrong, laughed when he should have been quiet.

Unsure what to do, Matt glanced back to the dock. The counsellor had moved into the water and was now standing knee deep in the lake. Although the two canoe combatants had fallen back into their seats, most of the kids had their eyes fixed on the lake. It seemed like everyone was waiting for the arrival of their counsellor and probably wondering what punishment would face the boys.

Sensing the drama was coming to an end, he looked back to Piper, but the girl had wandered farther away and hadn’t even glanced back. Not knowing anyone down at the lake, Matt felt alone. He looked back to the recreation cabin but the path was empty. Even Brody hadn’t shown up yet and he was probably still taking care of the injured kids or cleaning up their blood.

Looking towards the forest, Matt felt its pull. All the best stories happen under the canopy of trees, Bridge to Terabithia, the Hobbit, even Redwall. If Matt was ever going to write a story, or maybe have a real adventure, maybe the forest was the best place to start.

Piper McAllister...

....................................................

The farther Piper walked from the docks, the quieter the world became. The shouting counselors faded into the background, replaced by the gentle lapping of water against the shore and the soft rustle of pine branches overhead. She followed the shoreline until the crowd had all but disappeared, eventually finding a weathered log resting just beyond the sand where the grass met the trees. She slipped her backpack from her shoulders and sat down, stretching her legs out in front of her. The breeze rolled in off the lake, carrying the familiar scent of water and pine needles.

Piper reached into her backpack and pulled out her sketchbook. Her fingers lingered on the cover for a moment before opening it to a blank page. She didn't start drawing. Instead, she watched. Dragonflies skimmed across the water's surface. A pair of ducks drifted lazily near the reeds while laughter echoed from the swimming area farther down the beach. It was enough to keep her occupied without having to think too hard.

"You always disappear."

The familiar voice made her look up. Standing a few feet away was a girl about her age with sandy blonde hair pulled into a messy ponytail and a faded Camp Wyaconda T-shirt that had clearly survived more than one summer. A grin spread across the girl's face.

"I knew I'd find you by yourself.”

Piper couldn't help but smile. "Abby."

Abby had been in a neighboring cabin the summer before. They hadn't become inseparable or anything dramatic like that, but they'd spent enough afternoons together sketching, hiking trails, and quietly escaping the louder campers. She wouldn’t call her a best friend but close enough. Abby dropped her own backpack onto the log.

"I looked for you at breakfast." Abby stated, settling down next to Piper.

Piper shrugged. ”I didn’t think you were coming this year? Sorry to miss you. Were you late?…”

”Yeah, got in yesterday. Seems like a lot more kids this year.” Abby glanced toward the sketchbook resting in Piper's lap. “Draw anything good yet?"

Piper turned the book just enough to show the sketch she did earlier that morning. Abby's eyes widened.

"Seriously, Pip... every year you get better."

Piper felt her cheeks warm ever so slightly. "It's just practice."

Abby looked toward the woods bordering the shoreline, a mischievous smile slowly appearing.

"Want to get out of here?"

Piper raised an eyebrow. "And go where?"

"I found this trail yesterday that leads to a little clearing on the other side of camp. There's a huge fallen tree, wildflowers everywhere, and..." Abby lowered her voice dramatically. "...the counselors haven't claimed it yet."

That was enough to get Piper to stand. She tucked her sketchbook safely back into her backpack and slung it over one shoulder. A place away from the noise. Away from the crowds. That sounded considerably better than watching campers argue over canoes.

"Lead the way."

Abby smiled triumphantly before taking off down the narrow trail that hugged the shoreline. Piper followed close behind.

One more time, Matt gazed towards the tall pine trees that towered around the camp. Pointing towards the sky, the evergreens stood like sentinels, always protecting the camp from invading forces and the marauders who wanted entry. Somewhere beyond the trees, he was sure monsters waited. Orcs and Wargs were likely to be prowling the forest's edge, goblins and trolls searching for a hidden passage into Wyaconda. He knew the dark forces were always waiting, looking for their chance to pillage the camp and feast on the unsuspecting children inside.

Shaking his head, Matt smiled to himself before turning back toward the beach. He knew he had zoned out. Back home, his sister would laugh whenever it happened, then she would remind everyone that Matt had “that look” again, the one he had when his imagination took over, and a new world appeared in his head.

Looking back at the dock, Matt watched the kids still paddling awkwardly in canoes while others waded or swam in the crystal-clear lake. As kids jumped from the floating dock and splashed each other with water, the sounds of the campers beckoned, but when he looked to their faces, he didn’t know a single one.

Brody and the other boys still hadn't shown up, and the red-haired girl he'd met on the pathway had wandered off without another word. Still holding the baseball in his hand, Matt squeezed it a little tighter, pushing it deeper into the pocket of his glove. Considering his options, he slowly turned the ball in his fingers before remembering the rule. The answer was obvious. He didn't need to make the decision. Rawlings would.

It was a game of luck or chance, somthing he'd invented a couple of years before. Like flipping a coin, he'd toss the baseball into the air and catch it in his glove. Danny always laughed at him for it, but Rawlings had settled a lot of impossible decisions over the years.

If the side stamped RAWLINGS faced up, he'd head for the forest. If the blank side was showing, he'd go to the beach.

Matt took one slow breath and muttered to the baseball. "Don't let me down."

He pulled the ball out of the glove and made sure he didn’t look for the name. His sister had joked that he should kiss the ball for good-luck but he never did. With an underhand toss and a little bit of effort, he threw the ball high into the air. He watched as it left his hand and he noticed the way it rose up into the sky. Not taking his eye off the ball, he saw it reach its pinnacle. Against the backdrop of the blue sky and a few wispy clouds, the ball began to descend. As it fell nearer, he held up his glove and began to watch for the spin. Just like he did a thousand times before, he opened the glove and the ball dropped easily inside.

He held the glove closed for another second before slowly peeling back the leather. He already knew which answer he was hoping for, but the decision wasn't his anymore. As the mitt opened, Matt looked down. Red stitching. White leather. Right in the middle ...

RAWLINGS

Matt smiled as he pulled the ball from the glove. It never answered wrong.

Piper McAllister...

....................................................

"You're kidding." Abby's eyebrows shot upward.

"Nope." She stepped over a fallen branch before continuing."One kid somehow got hold of a knife and sliced his hand open. There was blood everywhere."

"Seriously?"

"Mm-hmm." Another pause. "Then another kid saw all the blood and fainted. Face first."

"You're making that up."

"Wish I was."

The girls laughed as they continued deeper into the woods. Sunlight filtered through the canopy overhead, leaving shifting patches of light across the winding trail. After a few moments of comfortable silence, Abby nudged Piper's shoulder.

"So... how's home?"

"About the same. Dad's still working too much"

”And the Step-monster?”

Piper grinned. ”Worse than ever. She wants me to be just like Laura. Doing pageants or whatever. No thanks. Can’t get me in a sparkly dress.”

Abby smiled to her friend. “Ha. Dresses can be freeing ya know. ”

The trail curved around a cluster of boulders before opening into a quiet clearing. Wildflowers stretched across the small meadow in patches of yellow, purple, and white. A massive fallen oak rested across one side like a natural bench, its trunk covered in soft moss. Butterflies drifted lazily from flower to flower while shafts of sunlight spilled through the opening in the trees. Piper stopped.

"Wow..."

Abby folded her arms with a satisfied grin.

"Told you."

"How did nobody find this?"

Abby shrugged as she started to lazily make her way through the clearly. Piper went the opposite way doing the same. She took it all in, the quiet, the calmness. It was like having ice cream for the first time in the summer. Sweet and satisfying. Piper laughed at herself before pulling out sketchbook from her backpack when a weathered wooden sign, half-hidden beneath vines, caught her eye. She brushed away the leaves.

STAFF ONLY

Abby wandered over. "Huh." Abby looked past the sign toward another, much narrower trail disappearing into the woods.

"Think they actually mean it?"

Piper stared down the overgrown path. Common sense told her to turn around. Curiosity tugged just a little harder. She looked back at Abby. A grin slowly spread across Abby’s face. Her friend took one cautious step past the sign. Piper sighed dramatically.

"If we get caught..."

"We blame the mysterious things in the woods."

“I don’t know, Abby. This is pretty far out. We should go back. The lunch bell will ring soon…”

“Fine… but during our free time on Saturday, when the weekenders are here… we will travel the trail less traveled…”

Piper rolled her eyes and sighed. Her friend was always more adventurous than her. Not that Piper didn’t enjoy a good adventure but she was always too cautious. The two turned to head back, handful of wildflowers in tow.
