The birds sang outside of the window and a young man with crystal blue eyes slowly opened the look out the open window. “Today’s the day!” He shouted as he sprang from his head. He and his best friend from college moved into together for a couple reasons; one was what they could save money and start paying off their school loans and the second was that the apartment complex only had one place open and it was two blocks away from the hospital they both were employed at. Yes this was Alexander, Alex, Le’Fontane and he was a new doctor at HSS Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City.

Alex hurried down to the shared bathroom to make claim of it as he got ready. Washing his face he stared at his reflection in the mirror. His hand ran across his face feeling the lack of facial hair, a groan left him. His family genetics prevented him from being able to grow facial hair and he always wondered if he could pull it off. Shrugging softly to himself he sighed and looked at his hand. Taking in a deep breath, his fingers and palm began to glow a faint white glow. Smiling brightly he ran his hand through his hair and his hair was perfectly styled and shaped. Pull his hand from his hair he finished up getting ready and hurried to kitchen.

Taking a moment to check to make sure his roommate had not started to stir, he clapped his hands together; the white glow eliminating both hands. Holding out his hands towards the kitchen, things began to move, the components to make pancakes.

Magic was a key part of Alex’s life and something he grew up using even though he lived in the human world, this magical being, this elf, lived among the humans. The problem is that the elves are scattered about the world and have to hide themselves until they felt the humans would accept them. So it should come as no surprise that they filled the locations of politics, civil servants and doctors as their powers are very useful in many different ways. The HSS Hospital was a hospital ran by elves cloaking themselves as humans and his father was the director of the hospital. Alex was destined to take over the hospital and he was okay with that but per his wishes, he will work his way up the ranks before earning his spot at the top.

His father was desperate for his son to come the hospital that he even agreed to take on the first human to ever work at the hospital and… well that was a bit problematic.

Elves were never supposed to reveal themselves to humans until the collective community agreed it was time but suppressing magic causes magical bursts of uncontrollable energy which can be dangerous so, Alex always took a chance at using his magic so he never had a burst; which is why his father was okay with hiring Kiera along with his son. One human can’t cause that many problems… right?

As the pancakes finished cooking and loaded themselves onto the plates and floated to their small dining room table, Alex hurried to Kiera’s door. His large hand knocked against the door as he was in his white tank top and black pajama bottoms. “Kiera wake up! Let’s have breakfast before we go. Hurry hurry hurry!”

Despite his looks, Alex was about 200 years old; very young for an elf but drastically old for a human but he had never enjoyed time around humans then when he met Kiera at a Comic convention and she showed him a couple outfits that were for sale. The next thing he knew he was dressed as the hero from the Zelda series and he even unmasked his ears and everyone went nuts! He became incredibly popular and the two became fast friends, even finding out they attended the same college and Alex became a very popular Cosplayer. In fact he became so popular around NYC that he no longer masked his ears and just had people convinced he had them implanted since he only cosplays elf creatures. It was fun to ‘be himself’ but it was hard because he wasn’t continually using magic hide his ears.

Now he was an elf pretending to be a human who cosplays as an elf with a human roommate and coworker to go work at a hospital ran completely by elves who help humans heal but cannot use magic around humans (conscious humans) and the entire hospital is under the supervision of his father.

What could possibly go wrong?

"Get up sleepyhead!"

Alexander Le’Fontane was shouting at her to get up, and although Kiera Dolrosch had plenty of respect for him, she groaned with a large amount of annoyance. "COMING," she screamed at Alex, which really wasn't very helpful or necessary. "In a minute. Pancakes?" She rolled out of bed, her violently red shock of hair sticking out every witch way. She ran a hand through her hair, which of course helped nothing. In fact, it made things sufficiently worse. She opened the door, stuck her touge out at him and slammed the door. She threw on an outfit that was comprised of a pair of black jeans and her heart t-shirt. She walked out of her room, hairbrush in hand. She plopped down into a chair and began to tug on it harshly. The brush made snarling sounds as she dragged it through her hair. "Ow," she winced out. The hair tie on her wrist looked like it was about to fall apart, which it was. Kiera was lazy about replacing them. And then the brush snapped. Shit, she thought.

Kiera ran back to her room to grab the next one she owned. Her hair eventually calmed down and reformed, although not painlessly. She braided it back, adding liberal amounts of hair gel to get it to stay. She could smell the pancakes even from where she was in her room. "They smell really good, Alex," she stated as she walked out of her room. Kiera's stomach growled. "I'm hungry," she whined, even though she was only hungry because she could smell Alex's pancakes, which tasted magical. Alex didn't seem to like it when she called them that though, so she kept the thought to herself. She glanced at the clock. 6:30. That explained some of her tiredness, but not all of it. She and Alex had to be at the hospital at seven forty-five, though for different jobs. She couldn't help but feel a childish buzz of excitement as she sat at the kitchen table. Today's the day, she thought. Today's the day.

She headed over to the fridge to grab syrup for her pancakes. She muttered a 'Good Morning' to Alex as she passed him, still more tired than she should be at six thirty in the morning. His hair was impeccable as always, glinting gold in the morning light. Kiera continued on her sleepy mission for syrup, opening the fridge and fumbling for a second before pulling it out. "Aha! I have found the golden snitch!," she exclaimed tiredly. Kiera plopped down in her chair and piled pancakes onto her plate, moaning as she took the first syrup-drenched bite. "These are so good, Alex," she mumbled around her mouthful. "Thank you."

“Yes Pancakes. Batter fried goodness pancakes.” Alex called out in response to her questioning about food. A smile moved across his face as she opened the door and when it slammed shut in his face, he busted out laughing. This was nothing new, in fact that were dorm mates for a long time so having a door slammed in his face from an angry redhead was nothing new for him. By the second time she had opened the door to exit, he had disappeared from the door and ventured back into the kitchen.

Picking up a plate he plopped some butter on the pancake and began to eat without the syrup. He was eating as his roommate stumbled around in an attempt to gather herself together. A chuckle left the blonde as she finally settled down with her golden snitch. “150 points to the Kiera house and that ends the game.” He made cheering noises as he teased her until she sat down.

A nod rose and fell his head as she thanked him. “You’re welcome. I’m just so excited!” Of course, he never told her his father ran the hospital and she didn’t know much about it but that was okay. They were going to study under some of the best doctors in New York City. “I’m excited to tour the hospital and see how everything is laid out! Man I hope it’s better than the hospital I interned at in New Jersey.” His whole body shivered at the thought of dealing with the jersey folks again. “Oh never again… never ever again!”

Laughing softly he cut a piece of the pancake and took a generous bite before finishing and asking, “You ready to make the world a better place?”

“You ready to make the world a better place?”

"Ready as I'll ever be, Watson," Kiera laughed out. The joking woke the redhead up a bit more, enough so that she wasn't, as Alex put it, a "Grumpy-pants". The girl shook her head, a few strands of her hair somehow managing to get free from the pounds of gel. "I- aaaagggghhh! I put half a bottle of gel in it. This should not happen!" She gestured wildly to her hair in circular movements. Kiera could only hope that Alex grasped her meaning. His hair never seemed to be out of place. "How do you do it?"

Kiera ravenously devoured her stack of pancakes, pouring more syrup than was strictly necessary on them, and soon the plate was drowning in the golden liquid."I am so hungry. Also, like, this is the first time in ten years I'm riding a bus that isn't campus regulated, so I'm EXCITED!!!!!!!" She peered at her coat. For the first time in two years, she'd gotten a new coat, and it was so warm and cozy. The blue parka was overdoing it, especially for NYC winter, but she didn't care.

When they had both finished their pancakes, Kiera dumped her dishes in the sink, took one look at Alex's pajamas, and said, "Go get dressed, lazy boy."

Her comment about his hair made him laugh, raising up a large hand he ran it through his hair before shooting her a bright white smile that seemed to almost twinkle with its own unheard sparkle sound. “Because I’m amazing.” Was his simple playfully sarcastic answer, an answer he gave to a lot of things when it came to explaining things he did with magic. It was just so much easier but blaming things on magic felt… wrong, considering he couldn’t tell her it was legitimately magic. So it was easier for Alex to just tack it up to the fact that he was just amazing.

His mouth dropped open as he finished his pancakes and ventured to the sink. “Me? Lazy??? Never!” His voice practically oozed sarcasm because he was rather lazy and well aware of this fact. It wasn’t rare to find him in clothes he wore the day before because he passed out in them or find his room a complete mess because he wasn’t under his parents’ harsh rule so he took advantage of that fact and enjoyed his lazy freedom. But with the top grades in his class it should come as no surprise that he was anything but lazy when it came to his schooling and his job. For a 4.00 did not come easy in doctorate school.

“Fine fine fine…” His voice was playful as he cleaned up his dishes and placed them in the near empty dishwasher before disappearing into his room.

This time when he emerged, he was in a pair of bright green scrubs, the scrubs for new trainees were required to be bright colored so people can spot them in they are in areas they shouldn’t be. He chose bright green, reflecting his favorite cosplay character Link!

“What color are your scrubs?” He questioned as he threw his large leather jacket over his shoulders.

"Whar color are your scrubs?"

Kiera smiled at his question. "Electric blue," she said, running to change into them and running back out of her room again. Kiera stepped towards the coat tree and pulled on her parka. "Let's go." She walked to the door and opened it for Alex. "Cosplaying gentlemen first," she said cheerily, following him out. They walked to the bus stop, Keira practically vibrating the whole way, which she knew was unprofessional, but right then, she didn't care.

She clambered onto the bus when it arrived, getting seats in the back for her and Alex. Her smile was stretched widely across her face. "Alex," she said, a bit like a mother talking to a child,"You are aware that your coat does not match your scrubs in the slightest?" Keira laughed, beause the mix of bright green scrubs and a leather jacket was honestly quite hilarious. She shook her head and tsked, something her parents had never let her do, and so she now did so as often as she could.

The bus stopped about two blocks from the hospital, and so they got out. Keira began walking in the opposite direction from the hospital, marching off like she knew exactly where she was going, even if she didn't. "This way, Alex!"

Of course their interactions were playful and fun as they ventured on their way towards the bus stop and once on the bus he sat next to her. “Excuse me for not being fashionable.” He said sounding playfully offended. “I’ll have you know that if I could, I’d be wearing a cloak or chain male into the hospital and tell people I’m ready to battle brain cancer but… ya know, not the best impression on your first day. If you don’t like me in my leather jacket then buy me a new one with all that doctor money you’re going to be making.” Pushing her with his elbow he found that not only was she shaking with excitement but he was as well.

Climbing off the bus not two blocks away from the giant hospital he was about to start in the direction before she turned on her heel and marched in the wrong direction. Alex’s reaction however, was priceless as he let her get a few feet away from him before he took advantage of his long legs and caught up with her and snagged the hood of her jacket pulling her to a complete and rather abrupt stop.

“This way?” He repeated as she turned around to find a blonde with a raised eyebrow. As she turned he dropped her hood and used that hand to point in the direction of the giant hospital. “But I want to work there.” He then grabbed her hand and pulled her along. “This is why I lead you dork.”

Inside the hospital he pulled her to the front desk and shot a beaming smile at the front desk person who looked at him in pure shock. The blonde haired boy was well known throughout the hospital already and everyone expected him to finish school and instantly work under his father to learn how to run the hospital but the email went out to everyone that he was working as an apprentice to the brain surgeon, a human would be interning as well (boy, that training was more like a PSA for ‘don’t use magic in front of her even though she’s on staff or you’ll be fired’) and… “Oh don’t worry, I’m a semiprofessional cosplayer.” Alex said pointing towards his ears. “I got approval to have these.” He wasn’t masking his ears.

They were each handed a thick file full of papers they were required to fill out before being left in a back room to fill it out. Opening the folder his eyes expanded wildly, “Holy crap do they want a blood sample and a piece of my first born’s hair. Jesus…”

Alex had pulled her back in the right direction when she'd tried to lead, and when they finally got to the hospital, she let him talk to the receptionist and retrieve their paperwork. “Holy crap do they want a blood sample and a piece of my first born’s hair?! Jesus…”

Kiera laughed quietly, a bit quited by the fact that someone else was in the room. "No, they want a piece of your second born's hair, and one of your first born's toes." The amount of paperwork they had to fill out was excessive. SS#, blood type, all that jazz. She grabbed Alex's hand and dragged him to a table, seeming to magically generate two pens from thin air. "If you sit down now, your feet will hurt less later. Something I learned playing tune percussion for nine years. You're always on your feet, so take advantage of seats when you can." She laughed weakly, still a bit unnerved by the receptionist. "And why did that lady care so much about your ears?"

She glanced down at the paperwork in front of her, and attacked it with her pen, quickly filling up page after page with purple ink. "Magical ability? Rate on a scale of one to ten? What is this, Alex?"

Confusion moved across his face when she announced that there was a second on magical ability. He placed his hand on his paperwork and under cover of leaning over the table to try and see what she was referring to, he hid the words on his application before shaking his head. “Sorry, I can’t read it like that.” After gesturing to take the paper, he took it and compared it to his. Sure enough they gave her the one referencing magic, the idiots. “I see… Medical.” He said placing his paper down in front of her and used the same trick, pointing out the section he had change from Magical to Medical and laid his hand on her paper, changing her wording as well.

“See, medical. I think we’re rating out confidence.” He said with a nod as he handed her back her paper and compared the two to show they both said Medical.

“Cosplay on the brain Kiera?” Alex responded with a chuckle as he sat down against the chair with a laugh. “Maybe we’ll play some video games when we get home. You’re lacking magical exposure so you’re seeing the word ‘Magic’ everywhere. As for the ears thing, she probably doesn’t like Cosplayers in costume regularly but I’ve got special permission so she’ll have to deal with it. Ha ha!” Hopefully she bought it and not wanting to get any more onto the subject, he returned to his paperwork humming a happy tune along the way.

As for the ears thing, she probably doesn’t like Cosplayers in costume regularly but I’ve got special permission so she’ll have to deal with it. Ha ha!”

Kiera laughed along weakly. "Your ears look very...." She paused for effect, "Dignified," she said, doing her best to sound snooty and then hiding her face from the receptionist's glare. "Video games sound nice. What would you want to play?" The paperwork was mostly a list of writing down things she had memorized, so it was just a matter of reading the actual question... and looking at the line. "Who're you gonna cosplay next?" What instrument did you play, if any? "And what does musical ability have to do with doctoring?," she mused aloud. "I know they want well-rounded people, but seriously."

When they finally finished their paperwork, Alex and Kiera headed up to the receptionist. "Do we get a tour of the building, Alex?" Kiera glaced around the room almost nervously. "And when's lunch? It's already 12, and I'm hungry."

Just then, a tall man who vaugely resembled Alex sauntered down the stairs the the reception area. He was tall with blonde hair, although he had normal ears. His sapphire eyes were only a shade or two lighter than Alex's sapphire grey, as Kiera like to call them. "You shall receive lunch after your tour," he said grandly, gesturing his arms. Kiera gulped. "What about our paperwork," she said in a very small voice. Gulp. "Should we finish that?"
