Prologue

With the arrival of the Spring Festival in Avaria comes the 150th anniversary of the Elenti-Amaril Peace Treaty. These two nations, having been at each other's throats until the rise of Vana and its ruler, Emperor Valeyn. Tensions have never subsided between the two nations, however, and even now they remain on uneasy terms, their borders constantly patrolled. None of the three nations has made any major actions in recent years, though, and as the festival's preparations continue tales of espionage and mounting military forces only leads to more unease. Despite the lack of fighting in the last few decades, it is only a matter of time before everything collapses and this delicate balancing act gives way to war.

The World

Elenti is a nation build upon two things: agriculture and seafaring trade. Located on the northeastern section of Avaria, the Elentians have a tendency towards lightning raids and naval battles, as much of the nation's land is bordered by the ocean. The Phelo River cuts through the rest of the nation from the south, though, which fuels commerce throughout the lands as well as supplying the capital its major water source. To this end, the land is rich with funds, but the military is more fueled by numbers rather than quality.

Amaril, on the other hand, is a land more oriented towards defensive battles and siege warfare, a result of being situated near various forests and mountain ranges. The Amarilians are experts not only in sieges, but also in guerilla warfare. Seen as 'uncouth' and 'dishonorable' by the Elentians, the Amarilians have perfected this style of combat during the many offensives executed by the Elentians and still make use of today. They are expert archers and are hardy, which works well with the various livestock they raise on the mountains. They are primarily hunters, but do engage in trade in order to replace the plentiful metals found across their lands for more necessary goods, like food or complex manufactured goods.

Not much is known about Vana, though, other than the fact that it seemed to suddenly explode in power a few centuries ago out of nowhere and easily shoved the two aforementioned nations out of what is now their land. Valeyn, too, remains shrouded in mystery, as not even Vana's citizens have seen him in public.

No need for anything fancy at this point, so let's just get this show on the road.

  • Name: Ange Vandarvayon
  • Age: 17
  • Gender: Female
  • Appearance: Prospective Sword Saint
  • Personality: A proud and dedicated daughter of the Vandarvayon family, the younger of a pair of sisters. Certainly, she has a great deal of pride in herself, and in her future as a Vandarvayon Sword Saint, the swordplay of her bloodline passing to both her and her elder sister. Ange views herself as a sentinel, a knight of the land, and this assessment of herself is hardly incorrect in regards to the Vandarvayon family's history. This pride in her family, her skills, all of it is compounded by a deeply competitive streak. And, well, while she's patient with her own training she is not patient with others, easily becoming irritable and angry when people behave in a manner she views as foolish or stupid. This attitude makes her a rather fiery girl, but at the same time she is also rather easily flustered or embarrassed. Ange may have a short temper, but she strongly believes in justice and her duty as a knight of the land and a future Sword Saint. She will never back down from a fight and matters of duty are to be unquestionably fulfilled in her mind. A Vandarvayon Knight does not back down, justice will be done. That is a solid, unwavering, unshakable fact in Ange's mind. To that end, she cares both about the extermination of evil and the defense of the innocent. She firmly believes that she is one of the most skilled wielders of the blade in the entire country... short of her sister.
  • Native/Not?: Native
  • Abilities: Ange is a daughter of the Vandarvayon family, and as such her future prospect is to become a Sword Saint. A title bequeathed only to those with incredible, inhuman skill with a blade, via both technique and magical capability, even a prospective Sword Saint is a force to be reckoned with. Ange possesses the lightning fast swordplay of the Vandarvayon family, making her offensive technique in melee an onslaught of rapid blows with a sturdy and sharp blade capable of cutting through even solid plate armor. However, this is not the only ability that Ange possesses. Additionally, she is capable of magic. Mostly this is to enhance her blade, lacing the edges and tip with mana in order to further augment its cutting capability, or release a slicing wind. However, she can also summon a set of six phantom blades to follow behind her. The can be launched as projectiles, but also wielded for a brief time if Ange is disarmed, though they will quickly break. Her family's crowning technique, one Ange has yet to master, is Dragonslayer, a blow with a sword intended to slice through even the strongest dragon's scales and skewer its heart. It is an ultimate shieldbreaker, a magically-enhanced defense-piercing sword technique that she cannot yet freely perform.

Name: Evan Kim
Age: 22
Gender: Male
Appearance: "A bit of an odd look for me, but I'll live with it."
Personality: With a calm head and a love of music, Evan is the sort of person who works tirelessly in pursuit of his passion. He is stubborn to a fault, at least when it comes to music, and refuses to budge an inch when it comes to moving pieces closer towards perfection. When it comes to working with other people, however, Evan is a lot less selfish, though he still has a tendency to look down on others if they tend towards inanity. There is a slight air of arrogance about him regardless, though, but he does well to hide it as best he can when in the company of his peers.
Native/Not?: Non-native.
Abilities: Despite not having much physical ability to speak of, Evan possesses what is, for all intents and purposes, a Stradivarius violin in peak condition (without actually being one, of course). Said violin is also the outlet for his music, though, and Evan can play it remotely without needing to use his hands should he so choose to. By using the aforementioned instrument, the young musician is able to cast various buffs, debuffs, and spells on anyone he so chooses. The effects of the music are determined by the song that he plays as well as its complexity, and the violin itself is more or less impervious to damage.
History: To say that Evan was a musical prodigy would not be far from the truth. Though his parents had planned to have him learn an instrument a few years into elementary school, the young child was already entranced by the world of music far before then, and thus sought to have his parents let him start learning a few years earlier. Parents being as parents were, they ceded ground, and the young child thus began to learn the violin. Of course, learning one instrument did not stop him from learning others as he grew older, nor did it cause his ability to play any one instrument to dull in turn.
Such a lifestyle was not perfect, however, as it meant that the young Evan seldom interacted with other children his age. It was only around high school did all of the insanity and buzz about being such a 'genius' begin to finally die down, despite all the accolades and tournaments he had piled up thus. It was then that he finally began to learn how to interact with people and expand his world beyond simply "music".
High school transitioned into college, and with that came time for Evan to travel and take classes abroad. Four years came and went in the blink of an eye, but the day he was to leave for his flight back home, the prodigy instead found himself staring down the shining headlight of a bus, and then—.
Other: Classical music is obviously his forte, but acquaintances have led him to learn various other genres of music, which in turn comes out in the pieces that he tends to play. Tends to stay away from punk and more avant-garde pieces.

Here's what I've drafted up for the interim, then.

  • Name: Yamada Jiro, badly in need of a new name
  • Age: 3X, now... how old is a young dragon, anyway?
  • Gender: Female
  • Appearance: As a child, as opposed to as a dragon. About the size of a donkey.
  • Personality: In general, Jiro was conditioned to take things in stride and simply deal with it. Of course, the current situation is far beyond what that would be... but that won't change the response. Unsuitable sarcasm and cynicism is the order of the day, by and large, though it's not like she can completely escape her childish impulses and present far greater level of energy. It's just not her normal reaction to things.
  • Native/Not?: Non-Native
  • Abilities: Aside from the obvious ability to adopt a more human guise, she has all the abilities you would expect of a dragon: strong, tough, can breathe a little fire, flight... but rather limited by being little more than an infant in dragon terms, though fortunately her human appearance is a bit older. And all that comes with being a magical shapechanging lizard in terms of potential.
  • History: In his previous life, Jiro was about as stereotypically dull as it was possible for any living human to be. A middle child with no outstanding abilities or talents, he ended up working in a respectable office job and finding his way to middle management. Not one to find time for romance, he was also the type to sideline his interests to get more work in and then go out drinking. All in all, a banal but tolerable existence.
Then, drunk one night, he found himself hit by a suspicously large vehicle...

Ok, here she's. Sorry it took so long:

• Name: Arianna "Aria" Aquarian, the Knight of the Squall

• Age: 17

• Gender: Female

• Appearance: A pure-hearted vixen...

• Personality: Aria is most of what one would expect of a holy knight, calm, collected and serious, yet gentle, resolute and loyal. She has these qualities despite the fact that she's yet such a young girl, which in turn means that she isn't very good at being anything other than a knight, being kind of naive, and unsure of how to approach people, mostly thanks to a secluded upbringing. Someone who'll go to great lengths to help others in need without asking for anything in return other than, perhaps a story told beside a warm fireplace.

Or at least, that's how she likes people to think about her. And most would do so... until they get to know her better.

In reality, Aria is brash and fiery. A girl with a sharp adventurous spirit that set around on a pilgrimage to know more of the world on her own. Like most Aquarians, she has a deep interest in reading, particularly in stories of all kinds, as well as more esoteric subjects like astronomy and mathematics, since both of these tend to have a lot of connections with any given culture's legends and history.

• Native/Not?: Native

• Abilities: As suggested by her title, Aria's expertise is a combination of high-mobility swordsmanship and elemental holy magic. Her gift for wind and water-based spellcraft comes as a divine blessing from Laguna, the Platinum Dragon.

To use her magic, Aria needs to recite—more accurately, sing— short verses called Elemental Arias. Amongst Aria's repertoire, her favorite spells are Aegis, Icarus and Nymph's Blessing. The first being a wind barrier to protect her against attacks she may not be able to dodge. The second is a mobility enhancement spell that substantially improves its recipient's agility and speed as well as cushioning any damage from falls. The last one is another mobility enhancer, however, this one improves the recipient's swimming ability while also granting the power to walk on water as if it were firm ground and preventing drowning.

Aside from these generally non-offensive spells, Aria can also invoke elemental based attacks, Aero and Aqua, and holy blessings, like Heal and Divine Grace, which offers passive protection against diseases, poison, and anything else that can compromise her physical integrity as long as Aria doesn't try to push her luck by doing things like walking around in a swimsuit in the middle of Winter.

Nevertheless, she has yet to master the greatest gift at the disposal of any of Laguna's followers, an extremely destructive spell called Laguna Blade which is said to wield the power of the Draconic Goddess breath as a "beam of light that purges all evil".

• History: Aria is the first-born princess of the small city-state of Aquaria, an ancient trading outpost known for its natural beauty and love for education. Despite the chance to live an easy life, Aria decided to follow the path of knighthood, honoring the divine blessing she received from Aquaria's patron deity.

Once she came of age, Aria decided to take a pilgrimage across the land, following her call, while learning about the world and collecting stories about everywhere she goes. Ever since then, she has lived a solitary, yet fulfilling, life of meetings and partings, traveling at the whim of the wind, seeing sides of the world that she could never imagine before.

However, it seems that her fate is about to change...

• Other: Aria's sword is a holy weapon—"Durandal, the Unbreakable Blade of Hallowed Starlight"— it's a heavy, jet-black longsword said to have been forged from the collected dust of the shooting stars that have streaked over the skies of Aquaria for Eons. As the name implies, the blade can't be broken or tarnished by normal means, as such its edge will never dull no matter what it's struck against. Furthermore, as a holy sword, it's very effective against evil supernatural beings like undead creatures.

Considering the extreme durability of her weapon of choice, Aria has a penchant to play with techniques that others would think twice before employing, like edge-to-edge blocks and weapon sundering. If she were ever forced to fight with other weapons, her brash style would likely result in several broken swords per battle.

Also, given how much she loves spending time in the water, Aria always has a swimsuit at hand. Most of the time, she even wears it under clothes, ready to strip and take a dip whenever she can.

Something to help get into the mood...
