I've had this idea for a little while. It combines elements of Magic: The Gathering and HeroScape, both of which I have never played. You will create custom cards that represent your characters and I will act as the DM. I'm mostly looking for critiques, ideas, and suggestions, but interest as well.

Character Cards
There are two types of character cards: Heroes and Minions. Heroes are named individuals who represent you, and each player has one. They have a vitality attribute and an attack attribute. If their vitality reaches 0 they are incapacitated for the remainder of the session. Minions represent, well, minions. They may be Viking Warriors, a Special Agent, or something like that. Minions have an attack and a defense attribute. Some characters may have abilities that allow them to fly, attack twice, synergize with allies, outright destroy cards, etc.

Augments
Augments represent enchantments, spells, weapons, armor, etc that can be played on character cards to give them abilities or enhance their attributes. Once played they are bound to that character card and cannot be removed. If the character is destroyed they are removed from play.

Gameplay
Prior to a session you will choose a Hero to represent you. Next you will roll dice several times to determine your hand (each card has a number associated with it; roll that number, that card is part of your hand).

A session begins when I play a Rival (anti-Hero) and a number of enemy character cards, and a session ends when you have destroyed the Rival. During your turn you will

  • Play one character or augment
  • Choose attackers

Once all of the players have chosen attackers I will choose defenders. Damage may be dealt and cards may be destroyed, but I will explain that below. It will then pass to my turn, where I will play new cards and/or choose my attackers. You cannot defend with a card you used to attack, and likewise I cannot attack with a card I used to defend.

How Attacking and Defending Works
Alright, so it's your turn and you want to attack. Each character card has an Attack and Defense value. Let's say you want to attack with Viking Warriors whose attributes are 3/2 (Attack/Defense).

The enemy decides to block you
The enemy blocks you with Forest Spiders 1/1. Because your attack is greater than their defense, their card is destroyed. Since they only have 1 attack they were not strong enough to overcome your 2 defense. But if they had defended with two Forest Spiders the Viking Warriors would have still destroyed them, but the 1 attack and 1 attack would have overcome your defenses and they would be destroyed as well.

The enemy decides not to block you
If the enemy decides not to block you then your character deals direct damage to the Rival. The Rival in turn deals damage to the character.

Looks interesting enough.
Would a potential RP based on this be focused on facilitating the game(deck building, battling eachother and NPCs, etc.) or would it be more focused on the game being used to facilitate RP?
