Elli can speak, write, understand and communicate in any language including computer codes, languages that have never been heard before, sign language (even lip-reading), illegible words, and backwards speech and writing with little or no training. She can even communicate with animals or read body language. This ability works by either or both of two faculties:
Elli obtains historical memories or sensations concerning beings and objects by touching them. With objects she gains the knowledge including the makers, users, and even those who have on passing used the object, and what has been done with it. With living beings or parts of the body she learns their general life-history, but doesn't gain anything of what they were thinking or feeling.

BRIEF Bio - Born on the Isle of Wright Elli was your basic Chalk Girl till she went on holiday with her parents to London at the age of 12 years old. They toured all the accepted historical sights and were on the Tower of London tour when the group guide told the story of a Duke who had been held there before his execution and how he'd somehow escaped the Tower which to that day was a mystery.
Elli who'd been acting dazed since her group began the tour walked past the barrier ropes and opened a secret door which no one had ever discovered before then, when asked by her parents why she'd done it she replied "The ghosts showed her how the man escaped"
Her parents laughed it off as one of those strange incidents of youth and continued on with their holiday.
When Elli was 14 she had attended a movie in Cowes Isle of Wright where her family now lived.
Then while she was walking home she heard an old woman in distress. Hurrying to see if she could help she came upon a distinguished couple one of which was the old woman and the other her unconscious husband. A constable was trying to help but couldn't understand the woman's language.
Elli found the officers statement strange when he said he couldn't because to her the woman is perfectly understandable. She told the constable that the woman was saying that her husband suffered from a rare heart condition and that he forgot his emergency medication at their hotel.
The constable retained Elli as a translator when they rushed the old man to hospital where they found out he is the father of the Visiting Spanish ambassador and he suffered from the condition Elli had said he had was true.
The ambassador said his mother when excited speaks in a mixture of Spanish an Silbo Gomero a language which came from La Gomera isle on the coast of Spain. The Ambassador was stunned that Elli could even understand the language much less communicate in it as it was such a rare language spoken by less than a thousand people at best. So grateful was he that he insisted that Elli and her parents join him on his official yacht were he awarded her for her aid with a medal for good citizenship an heroism.
At 15 Elli graduated from school with a perfect score in all her tests and was awarded a scholarship to Cambridge where she continued to shine.
She aced all her entry tests and quickly rose to the top of her class. This lead to exposure in the spot light which she found she didn't enjoy at all because of the types of people that wanted to use her talents which she learned to tone down.
She began to use the pseudonym Cypher when she wrote papers to various journals to hide her identity and avoid notice.
Cypher quickly became responsible for translating many obscure archaeological languages that had bedeviled the discipline for over two centuries or more. She felt happy as her splash became a mere ripple on the waters and she was all but forgotten by all but her peers by the time she turned 18.
She was offered a Generous position to Harvard as a graduate student and accepted thinking it would help to distance herself from her own reputation. She quickly made friends among the others in her class and believed her life had turned around becoming somewhat normal.
Then trouble began that year when one of her new friends while visiting Boston was kidnapped by a serial killer and murdered. Asked by her deceased friend's mother if she'd help clear out her effects Elli volunteered and headed to Boston and entered the hotel room where her friend had disappeared.
Try as she might Elli can't help but peek into the room's past using a power she repressed most of the time and what she saw shocked her as she watches the whole thing happen before her eyes and sees the Killer.
Knowing that simply saying she saw the Killer using Psychometry won't bring him to justice Elli set her intellect to work on a solution. She soon formulated a plan of attack that would cause the killer to confess or get sloppy.
She wrote using her left hand and making sure not to leave any clues to her identity an sent him a letter detailing her friends an two other girl's murders saying she has evidence on him along with film. She then called his cell phone using a burner bought for the purpose of catching him and using a faked accent told him that she wrote the letter and now he will do as she commands. She told him she wants a certain girl murdered an once it's done she'll turn over the evidence, that girl is she.
She then wrote to herself a letter taking careful pains to forge the killer's hand writing which she's gathered samples of.
She called the Boston police one night telling them she'd received threats from a man claiming to be her friend's killer and shows them the letter.
The police and the Feds are happy when Elli volunteers to risk her life to catch the man.
Her friend's killer is captured three days later and evidence is found in his van linking him to two more murders.
Feeling good after helping bring the bad guy to justice Elli began applying her talents to other crimes and developing the persona of Cypher as a crime fighter.
For three years she tracked criminals across America till one day she came to Gotham where she now resides.
She shed her previous life as had many in Gotham an reinvented herself.
In her new persona she is still Elliot Sinclair but she is no scholar of artifacts but instead she is a very successful Pet Detective who's reputation of closing cases is nearly 100%.
Her guise as a pet finder allows Elli to wander many places without suspicion by merely displaying to police or individuals her business card an license.
She still sends in papers on historical mysteries which she solves under the nom de guerre "Cypher"
