Alright so.

I have toyed with this idea a couple times, never really sure how to implement it, but then I decided to see if it would even be worth a shot.

To keep things simple. The idea is actually for more than one RP.

Instead it is for two, or maybe more. (Though to keep things less annoying for me, I will explain with two for the most part.)

Two RP's running at the same time. One is themed in one way, and another themed similar, but not completely.

Through some plot element, either mysterious portals, some astral messenger or something with some originality, the characters in each RP, are able to communicate.

So, while one group goes on their adventure or whatnot, so does the other, and while they don't really have anything do to with each other, there are odd parallels all over the place, and the participants, are able to speak to the players from opposite games.

With such an odd setup, things could go many different ways. We could eventually find out, they have been not very far from each-other after all, and dump them all together to finally meet in a new thread. We could find out, they will never meet in person, but still effect each others lives and chances of success in whatever they are doing in their game. A character from one, could be suddenly thrown into the other, and both sides will have to adapt. An item seemingly worthless in one game, is sent to the other, and becomes vital to their success.

So.

Just throwing the idea out there, if anyone wants to try it.

I see how it could get annoying/confusing, but if people really care, it could be one of the most interesting and unique game(s) played for a good while.

If enough people show interest in this idea, we can collaborate as to what is going on in each game, and then keep expanding from there.

The idea of two parallel stories really intrigues me, especially if they're two different genres. I'd definitely be willing to throw my hat into the ring.

A thought I just had- what if your characters are all alternate universe equivalents of each other? Not that they all have the same careers or personalities or even names, but they're still basically the same person. Maybe that's a bit much, though.

I had always thought the concept of two parallel RPs in the same universe that collaborate with eachother was interesting, so I'll watch this.

A device you couldnuse for this would be tonhave one group/universe be modern or even futuristic and havethe other be in the equivalent of the 18th century and kind of steampunkish. Have an inventor/scientist in each group and the one in the old time world create a contraption that ends up communicating with the cellphones/walkie talkies/etc. of the guys in the modern/futuristic world.
And with something like that, a good plot could be centered around a preexisting conspiracy between people in power in both worlds and a mysterious group of advanced entities from a third plane. Because of this, each group finds themselves threatened and their only clue is in their ability to communicate with the other group.

I was thinking of having more supernatural elements.

The idea I had for these RPs were two demons having a competition. They would each create a game, and then the other would pick a group of heroes, and they would have to deal with the other's game. Whoever won, could gain some amount of power or something of the like, and in the end, the goal of all the heroes together could be to kill the new overpowered demon.

Any one else have ideas?

We could mix that with Poly's alternate universe idea. It stands to reason powerful demons could influence both realities in one way or another so it in a way levels out the playing field if it was a game to them. Otherwise, it could just be two other powerful figures manipulating events all the same as if it were the demons.

I once read a book, I think it was by the same person who wrote Animorphs, actually, in which the characters were all(or mostly) people from the "real" world who had been plunged into a new, fantasy world. But the thing was, when they slept in the fantasy world, they went back to the real world, where they had been functioning on autopilot before(and at least one character had a third layer for when he was sleeping in both the "fantasy" and "real" worlds). IIRC(it was a long time ago I read this) one character met another of them in the "real" world, but continued to act as if they weren't both a part of the "fantasy" world. I guess because he wasn't sure they all experienced it.

I don't know where this is going, but it's what I thought of. There could be a sleep and dream world type deal.

Oh, and here's an original idea I've had before:
When you die, you "drop down" a layer, and enter another earth that's geographically identical to the first one. All people who have died have passed through here, and when they die here they drop down yet another level, and it goes infinitely. The first layer is where most people originate, and they are almost entirely unaware of the other layers. The lower layers are technologically and ideologically much different, the further you go. And what if there were people who were capable of traveling both directions? Or conditions in which you could travel "up" a layer?

I'm rambling now, but here are things that I thought of when reading this thread, figured I'd throw them in.

EDIT: Book series was called Everworld, and it was indeed written by K A Applegate. Probably I remember it very vaguely, but the above ramble is what I got out of it.
