C H A P T E R O N E : P O I S O N E D W A T E R S

The beam of Jason's flashlight disappeared, swallowed by the darkness of the damp tunnel. Holding the collar of her leather jacket over her sensitive nose, Charlie wrinkled her face in disgust. The sights and sounds of the city above would be a welcome relief to the pungent odor of the sewer she was currently standing within. Normally an alligator in the sewers of Miami was nothing uncommon, however an alligator that could appear as a naked woman was something that had caught the attention of the two paranormal investigators.

Despite appearing human, there was more to Jason and Charlotte than met the eye. Aside from hunting monsters, the two had at least one other thing in common, they were both the offspring of creatures collectively known as Hellions. Having only met Jason several weeks ago, Charlotte was still unsure about his heritage or even his abilities but despite a rough introduction the pair ended up working well together. Hell the Mavericks might even owe them after they returned Lilith to her slumber beneath their city.

Although how we ended up mixed up with a greater demon was a story for another time.

"Keep the flashlight away from me." Charlotte muttered from behind her collar as she raised her hand to shield her eyes. "It's screwing with my nightvision." Hissing, she waded through the sewer water as she struggled to find a foreign scent between the heavy tones of stale water and human waste.

"I'm going to gut Archie if this tip turns out to be a wild goose chase." She called to Jason referring to their mutual contact. Archibald Sheridan, was a journalism student the pair encountered during their romp through Larissa. Charlotte had dismissed him as something of a geek with a fetish for the occult but in the end the ginger had proven to be useful in re-sealing Lilith's tomb.

Taking a deep breath, the Dhampyr nearly choked on the overwhelming stench of the sewer before pausing to point around a bend.
"I got a scent. That way." She stated as her hand came to rest on the large revolver strapped firmly to her right thigh. The pair may not have been proper Venari but they made up for it.

Jason was waving the flashlight back and forth in the tunnels of the sewers, partly because he wanted to be aware of his surroundings - not that he was scared, or anything. The damp air bothered him more than the stench did, when you had spent as many days in a stable as he had your nostils just kind of turned off to this kind of smell. But the moisture in the air and the cold of the tunnel did bother him, pulling his motorcycle jacket closer over his shoulder, the baseball T under the jacket wasn't exactly warm - it was surface wear. His black urban camoflague trouser with leather combat boots protected him well enough.

As he swayed his hand, the light would shine upon Charlie, she didn't appreciate it - which only made him sway his hand towards her more often. She hissed at him, he grinned. "Come on, don't bite my neck off." he teased, following his partner. As Charlie mentioned gutting Archie, Jason scoffed, patting his side, the remodeled gun holster he used to carry the enchanted combat knife that was his weapon of choice. his boots had gotten wet from the sewage water, making him let out a annoyed sigh.

"You picking up anyth- All right then, lead on." Jason spoke as Charlie cut him off by picking up a scent, he had his talents, but when it didn't involve running away or hitting someone, he was convinced that the girl he partnered with had the better set of powers. The rune inscribed onto his neck began pulsating lightly, like the beat of his heart, and as they traveresed closer to the scent Charlie had picked up, the rune started beating quicker on his neck, letting out a ultraviolet glow. "Yep, definately here." Jason spoke, putting his hand into his jacket, his fingers gripping tightly on the handle of the bayonet, the weapon's inscriptions on the side of the blade began glowing inside of it's sheath at his touch.

As Jason's rune began to glow, Charlie felt her nostrils grow overwhelmed with the monster's smell as the pair emerged into a large circular room. The smell of blood and the victims rotting fleshed flooded Charlie's senses as her stomach let out an involuntary growl at the introduction of the new odor.

"Don't think too much of that. I prefer my food fresh the same as you." She muttered as she drew the large gun from her thigh and pointed into the circular room. Holding a finger steady over the hammer, Charlie took slow steps forward as she examined their surroundings. Dingy water flowed into the room from higher tunnels, tainted green with waste, algae and whatever else was polluting the water. A femur snapped beneath her feet as she walked forward causing Charlie's hackles to raise.

"We've found its nest." Charlie stated as she paused to look around. Scales littered the ground among the remains of the creature's victims as Charlie kneeled to take a closer look, running the scale under her nose.

"It's not a basilisk." Charlie stated as she stood up. "Too many remains, no petrified people and not the right smell." Walking towards the center of the room, the female Dhampyr pulled her Bowie knife from her boot and poked at a piled of brush that had been dragged to the center of the room. Beneath the dead branches and long blades of grass was a smooth looking rock, nearly three feet tall and a brownish green in colour, Charlie ran her hand along before pressing an ear to the cold surface.

"...It's an egg." She exclaimed as she turned to Jason. "We're not hunting just one. We're hunting a pair."

The smell of rotting flesh and the smell of iron from the blood of the victims filled the air to such a degree that Jason too felt it. He shrugged as he spoke "So, you gonna finis that?" His joke was met with a equally snarky remark from the Dhampyr. Jason stood at the entrance to the room, looking around, the rune on his neck pulsating ever faster. "It's nest, sure.." He spoke, clearly not paying enough attention to what Charlie was saying, instead using his flashlight to look over the surroundings, the walls were painted with blood, whatever it was that had killed these people sure had a knack for making it as messy as possible.

"Not exactly sanitary." Jason spoke, as Charlie discovered the peculiar rock, lifting it up and putting her ear to it she let him know it was in fact an egg. "So.. Do we make an omelette?" Feeling his rune pulsate with ever so more power, Jason was alerted just in time to duck down from where he stood as a razor sharp scale came towards him, the size of a sawblade, hitting the stone wall behind him, penetrating it and getting several inches deep into said wall, slicing a few strands of hair from his head, with a sound similar to the crack of a bullwhip and a flash of crimson light, Jason appeared next to Charlie, his knife in hand, the seven inch blade's inscriptions glowing.

The slender spherical being with clawed arms rushed down from the ceiling in the other room, appearing in front of the two, where Jason had been earlier. Moving as quickly as a spider, yet in a way reminiscent of a snake. It opened it's mouth and hissed at the two, probably cursing the two hunters, glaring at Charlie. "You know, I somehow think it's mad at you.." Twirling the knife in his hand. He began running towards the serpent, vanishing and appearing above it, jamming the blade into it's torso, and quickly pulling the serrated blade out, causing dark liquid to poor out of the dragon as it cried in pain, before side-swiping Jason with the back of it's arm, the fins on it's arms expanded into wing like things, like a shield, hitting the hunter and sending him into the air, where he vanished only to appear next to Charlie again, knife in hand.

"This is when you shoot it!" he shouted, his breath a little heavy, the taste of iron in his mouth from the hit he took.
