I'm kind of worried about the idea that someone is trying to manipulate us, I mean think about it, we grow these powers suddenly, out of nowhere, and then a mysterious voice tells us to "compete" with each other, what does the voice mean when it says "competition"? Many, maybe all of these new people with our powers can kill each other with that kind of suggestion coming into their minds. I can only describe it as someone giving small children fire arms and telling them to go and play with each other? What if some of us get the bright idea to just "off" someone else for their power?"

...did I miss an app? If not, you don't have one. They're not a mandatory thing, nor are you limited to one, they're just there so people who join after we're full on the god end of things can still participate, and also to offer a different spice to the story.
