"I want you to take him."

Tide had returned to Castelia City after journeying across Unova. After defeating the Hoenn League, he decided to continue his journey across the different regions, completing the challenges that each one presented. Kanto's Indigo League felt almost nostalgic, even if he had never been there. The whole region had this dream-like quality to it, a simplicity in the Kanto way of life, and straightforward battle that he had not quite captured anywhere else. Ultimately, as much as he enjoyed the region, it was a straight shot to the Kanto Pokemon League, and he cleared them without too much trouble. Or, that is, altaria cleared them, with help from sylveon, and even mightyena! It may not have been his first league, but he was proud of his team nonetheless. It's only after coming to Unova that thing's got crazy. He had a run in with a Team Plasma goon, discovered a gardevoir in the slums that had become a mother to the outcasts there, and... Well, that was most of it, but it's still exciting!

But to return to the present-

"You want me to do what?"

The man pinched his brows and frowned down at the smaller man in front of him. He was a trainer that operated in the Castelia City bug gym, Wilde, and he was all but forcing a pokeball into Tide's startled hands.

"Please. I... I can't. Spots needs a good home. A good trainer. I can't provide her with either."

Tide's frown deepend. He had never seen any hints as to anything wrong with the man. He battled with such fervor in the gym, just a couple months ago. What had changed? Whatever it was, it has left the smaller man harrowed in a way Tide has scarecely seen. He looked pale, and possibly frightened. What had he gotten himself into...?

"Just take it!"

Wilde thrusts the ball into Tide's hands and hangs his head. When Tide finally, reluctantly accepts the pokeball, the man raises an arm to cover his face. Tide wants to say something, to learn more about what happened, but... It's clear whatever it is, he doesn't want to talk about it.

"I'll take Spots," he says softlly, and he lays a hand on the other's man's shoulder. He freezes under the touch, but doesn't pull away. "Just know, I will return. One day. And we'll sort this out, together. Okay?"

Tide waits for several long seconds, until Wilde gives a single, solemn nod. That's enough for Tide, and he leaves the man to his demons. He meant what he said, and he will be back... But not now. In fact, he has a message he should probably review. He was about to do just that before Wilde approached him in the streets, startling him so much he almost became a ghost-type on the spot. But that's int he past now. He should really read that letter.

Digging it out, he skims the contents with mixed worry and excitement. If this is true... Somebody has recognized his talent, and he's being invited to an exclusive tournament. Oh, his mother has to hear about this! He has to get writing right away! Now, where is Castelia City's post office again...?
Lol. Writing fanfiction to each other. That's actually how I imagine many roleplays here go. I'm not really an author myself, and I'm used to fairly independent, shorter posts. 3-4 paragraphs or something is pretty typical for where I come from, but I've observed things work different on tabletop sites, and places like this.
Name: Tide
Age: 36
Pronouns: He/Him
Trainer Type: Hiker
Hometown: Slateport City, Hoenn
Appearance: A man of modest features, with rounded cheeks, soft features, and eyes the color of chestnuts. He's a bit heavyset, but not obese. and prefers to travel in the garb of a traditional hiker, sans the backpack.
Personality: Kindly, curious, and thoughtful.
History: Tide did not grow up yearning for adventure or the thrill of combat; he grew up in a bustling port city, with an ocean breeze against his skin, and a bustling marketplace bursting with wonders from across the world. He assisted his father at Stern's Shipyard, and learned about the pokemon they co-exist with from his mother. Once, he asked his father why they sink ships- don't people need them? The answer he recieved would stay with him forever: "The pokemon need them more." From that moment on, he paid more attention to his surroundings, and the life that inhabited them. The wingulls soaring overhead, the tentacool lurking off the shallows, the zigzagoon you could catch traces of off of route 110, and the eevee and the drifblim and the ninetails that arrived off the S.S.Tidal from regions unkown. And still, it's not their potential for combat that enthralled him, but the simple beauty of nature, of the soft brown coat of herdier, of the vivid blues of a frillish, of the gorgeous ribbons of a sylveon- oh, how he adored sylveon. He wished he could have one of his own, but finding an eevee to raise... It was outside of his reach, at the time.

Or so he thought.

His mother was aware of his fixations, and she was in no position to suppress them. Instead, discreetly, she conducted her own search. Not for giveaways or marketing, but for... Well... Something he could raise. On his 10th birthday, as is tradition, Tide recieved his very first pokemon. Or, more specifically, he recieved an egg. He was confused, at first, but grew more excited when his mother told him to take care of it. "This is your responsibility now," she told him, and he accepted it with a cheer and an enthusiastic hug. For the next 28 days, he poured over every scrap of knowledge he could find on how to properly care for a pokemon egg, and at the end of those long 28 days, it finally hatched.

It was an eevee. His very own eevee.

Unbeknownst to him, his mother had travelled across Hoenn on a "family visit", and at some point in time, miraculously, she happened upon a pokemon daycare with an eevee egg. The trainer never returned for their pokemon, or the egg, and unfortunately... The eevee was in no condition to travel.

From that moment on, Tide would never be seen without his small and fluffy partner bounding by his side. They trained together in their own ways, helping his father at the port, playing on the beach, and tentatively exploring route 110, although he was cautious of sending his precious eevee into battle. He would hate to see her get hurt!

By 16, he entered into the Contest Hall to participate in beauty contests with his eevee. The crowds adored him, especially the locals who knew him well, and by 18, he earned his first Cute Ribbon. That very same day, at 8 years old, his eevee evolved into sylveon, right on stage. It was the happiest day of his life.

Not long after, his mother sat him down and asked him a very important question: what does he want to do with his life? There were no wrong answers here. He could pursue more Beauty Contest ribbons and rise in fame, or he could do something else entirely. But he was coming of that age where he needed to choose. What is he going to do?

He thought long and hard about this, and while he would have liked to pursue more Cute Ribbons, he understood that that was a fantasy. It was a fun hobby in his youth, but it's not something he could make a living off of. And more importantly... He knew why she was asking. It's not something he had ever brought up before, out of respect for his mother, but he had seen the gym badges. He'd seen the longing in her tired gold eyes. The way she watched the occasional pokemon battle that sprung up in Slateport. And he'd heard her recount stories, more than once, of her and her altaria's travels across Hoenn, and how she never got to finish her adventure. Although he wouldn't be doing it stritcly for himself, he decided then he would become a proper pokemon trainer, and he would fulfil her dream in her stead. The way her eyes lit up... That made it the second best day of his life. It helped that she gave him her own pokemon, altaria. The old thing could use a refresher, and she was more than happy to return to battle.

So it is that Tide set out from Slateport City with sylveon and his mother's altaria, ready and eager to pursue his first gym badge. No sooner had he stepped foot on route 110, however, was he attacked by a poochyena! Altaria and sylveon were quick to knock it out, but altaria... He hadn't considered that she was a high level pokemon, and she hadn't exactly pulled her punches. It was all Tide could do to bring it to the Slateport pokemon center as swiftly as he could. The nurse informed him that the poochyena was in a bad shape, but would make a recovery.

That's when Tide understood the responsibilities he had been given. Not just for his pokemon, but for others as well. He vowed, then, that he would nurse poochyena back to full health, and he made sure altaria understood what she had done. She seemed remorseful, at least.

When the time came to release poochyena back into the wild, something strange occured: it wouldn't leave. It seemed afraid to go back, more afraid of the woods than the trainer that had KO'd it. Feeling bad for the poor thing, he decided to bring it along.

And so there were three.

The excitement of his first years as a trainer seemed to be an anomaly, because nothing quite as noteworthy repeated itself while he was in Hoenn; he encountered trainers, won battles, and finally overcame the Mauville gym, although it may be fair to say altaria overcame the Mauville gym, as sylveon only participated in a couple battles against the gym's resident trainers, and poochyena... It still refused to battle. But that was alright, altaria seemed to be more than happy to tackle the challenge alone.

What had his mother been like, he had to wonder, to own such a ruthless pokemon?

Goals: To travel the world and gain enough renown as a trainer to make his mother proud.

Team:

I might be a bit biased (Also hi, wow, I made it in and I don't even have a complete character or team XD. I'll finish that... Eventually.), but if any region should host the Valkyrie League, it should be Sinnoh. Pokemon God himself is associated with the region, it only makes sense the most important league in the world would be based there as well.
Glad to see ASEAN is still going.
Hi. It's been a couple... Years... Since I checked out this site. This was near the top of the list and caught my eye. What generation does this go to?
Bump
It all started when the Machine went critical...

The earliest memory of civilization is devastation, of the twilight of the grandest empire the world had ever known, of a Great Machine, an unfathomable marvel, whose architects sought to enrich the world by capturing the power of infinity.

Their hubris was their undoing, and the Machine suffered a critical failure upon activation, turning the power meant to enrich the world into a force that only wrought a storm of annihilation. At great cost, the Machine was deactivated and sent crashing to the earth, but once the survivors dared to brave the world again, they would find the damage had already been irrevocably done.

The world beyond what would soon come to be known as The City had been reduced to a barren, uninhabitable wasteland of ash and infinite dunes, and the Machine, like a dark monument mocking the arrogance of mortals, had carved out a no-pony's-land of madness in the center of it all.

Centuries after the empire's fall, not even the memory of it remains, and the City's inhabitants have managed to scrape together something approaching functional societies, explorers digging through old ruins in search of scraps of glory that might rekindle what was once lost. Civilization survives, but it barely "lives".

In the ages since the fall, the art of magic is a shadow of its former brilliance. So much was lost in the fall, and what has been rediscovered is jealously hoarded by exclusive groups. Even most unicorns, those to whom magic is their greatest defining trait, forsake their gifts in favor of circuit and servo. For despite everything, technology -mundane and magical alike- dominates this era.

The theocratic dictatorships of Harmony and The Dominion wage an eternal war of land and resources, and in the ruined spaces between, Destrier scavengers eke out an existence, uneager to face the wrath of the god-queen Alicorn or the dragons across from her.

All the while, the Machine's shadow looms across the land, presiding over this twisted play with all the indifference of an eldritch deity. It is a time of faith and radical ideals, a time of discord and refusal to compromise on extremes, a time where the ideals of love, hope and harmony are in direly short supply, where giants trample over the commonfolk in the name of lofty so-called "Greater Goods".

It is into this era they arrive, or rather... from which they rise. For now, they are little more than cogs in the machine, a single grain amongst the sands, but there is a spark in some... a thirst for more... a drive for change, be it grand or personal. And whether it be at their own behest or in aiding those leading the charge, this time of darkness might very well be coming to an end... or only just beginning.

Shall we see where the dice land?
