Wayne Manor/The Batcave

Alfred Pennyworth was worried. Despite what some might think, this was not a particularly common state of mind for him. He did not worry when Master Bruce went out into the night to bring justice to Gotham's seedy underbelly, not anymore. Too many times he'd watched his employer drag himself back almost from beyond the grave through sheer force of will to be easily concerned over his wellbeing. Similarly, he didn't feel more than a twinge of anxiety over Masters Dick, Tim or Damian swinging from rooftop to rooftop. They were young, true, but they were each trained by the best, fit as fiddles and determined to emulate Master Bruce as completely as they could. No, for the most part he didn't worry about them any more, just waited patiently for them to drag themselves back to the cave so he could stitch their wounds, feed their empty bellies and wash their sodden uniforms. Even now that some of the birds had left the nest, they would still periodically return for a taste of Alfred's cooking or a display of the proper way to close a knife wound.

But today, he was worried. Master Bruce had now been absent from the cave for three days and three nights without any explanation. Normally, if he was going to be away with the Justice League or chasing Miss Talia across the globe, he'd at least leave a note so that Alfred wouldn't waste time making meals no one was going to eat. Well, not more than usual, anyway. Master Bruce didn't always remember to consider the feelings of others, Alfred reflected, but he certainly considered the well being of Gotham and there were currently no members of the extended Bat-family patrolling its streets apart from Master Damian and he could hardly be expected to handle the entire city alone.

No, Master Bruce had not given any notice that he would be absent from the city and that worried Alfred more than he cared to say. He'd been distracting himself all day by dusting different parts of the manor and the cave, doing jobs he'd be putting off (like cleaning the Batcomputer's screen, wretched thing, why does it need to be so large?) and generally avoiding thinking about the problem at hand. But now that night had fallen and the Batsignal lit up the sky, Alfred could hardly put if off any longer, especially not with the news that Talia and her contingent of the League of Assassins had arrived in Gotham.

Moving at a determined pace, Alfred walked from his station in the kitchen to the west study and took the stairs down the cave. The hinges on the ornamental grandfather clock that did the job of concealing the cave's entrance from view seemed to be squeaking slightly, he noticed, and were clearly in want of oiling. As he reached the bottom of the steps he spotted young Master Damian in training section of the cave, hurling knives at a defenceless dummy with all the ferocity Alfred had come to suspect from the current bearer of the title 'Robin'. His fascination with sharp weapons weren't shared by even Master Bruce and Alfred felt he really aught to have a talk with the boy about it one day soon, perhaps to explain exactly why it was Master Bruce objected to causing lethal harm. Master Bruce was hardly going to sit down and have a heart to heart with the boy, after all.

But for now, Alfred contented himself with striding over to the colossal Batcomputer, leaning over the microphone and saying "Condition Empty Nest, initiate Protocol Swarm" in crisp, clear tones. The computer hummed, whirred and went to work. Faces flashed up on the screen, Dick Grayson, Tim Drake and many others, and the computer reeled off contact details and dispatched messages. After a while Damian strolled over, implying a complete lack of interest with every movement. "Who are you contacting Pennyworth?"

Alfred gave a wry smile and raised an eyebrow. "Who do you think, Master Damian? I am calling everyone."

I registered some interest in the general interest check so here I am, reporting for duty. This is all I have so far by way of a character sheet but it's in the works.

Name
J'ohn J'onzz

Alias
John Jones, the Martian Manhunter

Alignment
Neutral Good

Affiliation
Unaffiliated

History
■ 1900 ■
J'ohn J'onzz is born to an average Martian family. To their delight, he displays all the desirable traits that a young Martian could have; telepathy, mass shifting and spectrum shifting. His parents are so proud of their child they name him 'Light to the light' in their language, a name that proclaims honour and justice for all. As he grows into a young man, J'ohn masters the many uses of the complex Martian physiology. He can shapeshift, send his mind outside his own body to contact the minds of others, affect physical objects with his mind, change his density to pass through solid matter and alter his appearance in the visible spectrum of light to become invisible. Some of these abilities are common place within the Martian populace but great self discipline and talent are required to master so many. Members of the populace who cannot even shapeshift, the most common ability, are referred to as mutants and shunned.

■ 1930 ■
A child named Saul Erdel is born on earth and J'ohn J'onzz begins his training to become a Manhunter on Mars, the Martian equivalent of a police officer. His training goes at a fast pace and he is soon a fully fledged Manhunter, using his superior mastery of his natural abilities to great effect when tracking and apprehending criminals.

■ 1950 ■
A Martian project is announced called 'Firebird'. The project's aim is to create a craft capable of ferrying Martians to the other planets in the solar system. J'ohn is now recognised as one of Mar's foremost Manhunters and has been bonded to a Martian named M'yri'ah. Saul Erdel is now a young man, studying Astro-physics and Quantum theory.

■ 1980 ■
J'ohn now has a child named K'hym, who seems to have inherited his gift for the manipulation of her physical form, far outstripping her class-mates with her skills at shapeshifting. Project Firebird is still underway and predicts that it will be operational inside fifty years. Saul Erdel has been a scientist for most of his life but is ostracised by the scientific community after claiming he could build a device to instantaneously transport interstellar matter to earth. Even after many years working on this project, he has made almost no progress but refuses to focus on anything else.

■ 2000 ■
J'ohn was in hot pursuit of a fugitive when he felt the world fade away from him, air twist in his lungs and suddenly he was a new place. It looked wrong, smelled wrong and felt wrong to the many senses he possessed that humans do not. In front of him, a humanoid with pink skin seemed as shocked at his arrival as J'ohn was to have arrived. As he watched, the man collapsed backwards onto the floor. In his mind, J'ohn felt the other creatures life pass away in a flash of vindication, shock and fear. Saul Erdel has died moments after seeing his great invention finally succeed.

■ 2005 ■
J'ohn has spent the intervening years slowly learning about humans, first without leaving the lab and then by adopting a human shape and venturing forth. He learned from television, the internet and by talking to humans but mostly with his telepathic powers. After much consideration, he decided the only sensible course of action is to wait until Project Firebrid is advanced enough to reach earth, no sooner than 2030, and then contact the ship and its crew. Given the longevity of his race, he has the time to wait. Until that day, he will simply have to live the best he can on earth. He adopts the name John Jones and joins the Metropolis Police Department, the similarity between his new role and his old job bringing some comfort. He desperately misses his family.

■ 2013 ■
J'ohn is one of the many heroes that step forward and battle against Magneto in his attempt on President Kelly's life. He joins forces with Superman and is both surprised and pleased to learn of another alien, far from home, on planet earth. After the battle, he talks with Superman a great deal, eventually revealing his alter ego, John Jones and is honoured when Superman in turn tells him he's normally called Clark Kent. More than allies, the two have become fast friends and J'ohn follows his friend's lead when it comes to declining membership in the JLA.

■ 2016 ■
J'ohn continues to serve law and order as MPD detective John Jones and help protect the human race as the Martian Manhunter. Although he misses Mars, M'yri'ah and K'hym with all his heart, his desire to do good will not let him rest while injustice thrives.

This version of J'ohn uses his original origin so the Martian race still exists but have not yet mastered space travel. I've also deliberately not mentioned White Martians and instead had the mutants on Mars be the ones with no special abilities, which will colour how J'ohn sees the situation on earth. He's also not a member of the Justice League or any other team and lives in Metropolis.

@LePouvantail
Send me a PM and we can hash out some of the details of Eddie and Crane's previous dealings and relationship. I won't be able to answer it until tomorrow though.

@Jinny
I second that proposal, didn't even see that it had changed.
@LePouvantail
B:TAS has always been my favourite version of the Rogues Gallery and the image on the first page of the OOC makes me think of it so I was using that version. Not exactly friends but not really enemies either.

As for Hush, I never particularly liked that arc or the character but you're right, Eddie and Crane have worked together.

Eddie would wreck Crane at chess.

As a small note for everyone, I personally prefer to carve out a slightly different version of the characters rather than stick doggedly to what has been established in the canon.
@ProPro
There's no guarantee that's cannon with this iteration of the characters though. I think the B:TAS versions got along okay, they all used to make fun of whoever had been beaten by the bat most recently.
@Midori
Looks good to me. We should do a collaborative post for the training session, don't you think?
@Ruby
I'm now wondering how the villain community is handling Joker's death. I mean, they all spent a lot of time together in Arkham through the years so I imagine it would be like losing a co-worker that you didn't exactly like but whose work you respected. You'd be a little sad and reminiscent but not weeping.

@LePouvantail
Maybe Scarecrow and Riddler should get together and share a drink while remembering the Clown Prince of Crime?

Roughly when will the IC be starting? Because I'd like to get in on the ground floor but can't take the time out of my real life to do a character sheet justice until this time next week.
@Sep
It's not just the killing, it's that S.H.I.E.L.D. is essentially above the law. I mean, I don't see S.H.I.E.L.D. getting permission before launching an operation on a sovereign nation's soil or respecting human rights when dealing with meta-human prisoners. Much like real life espionage agencies, what they do might be necessary but that doesn't make it morally appealing or easy to describe as the actions of a hero.

That was how I was intending to play the character, anyhow. Not as a kill-crazy murderer but as someone who doesn't think twice about killing for the greater good as they see it, a trait that applies to many villains as well.
