there's a lot of familiar faces in here

maybe i will become one of them
Today was the day. Kasumi's first race as a Formula 1 driver was finally here. The atmosphere was nothing like she had ever experienced before. The crowd that was present for this race had nothing on anything she'd seen in other series as well. She knew that all eyes were on her and the 21 other drivers on the grid. "Comm check." Her engineer piped in, "Welcome to our first race in Formula 1. Take it easy on the start, and settle down into your rhythm. Keep it clean." Claire said on the radio, as Kasumi was glancing around her cockpit. If it wasn't for the fact that adrenaline was coursing through her veins and her heart pounding so loudly that she could practically hear it in her head, she would've fallen asleep. As tight as these cockpits appeared to be, the position they were in were comfortable enough to warrant some drivers falling asleep.

Soon enough, the entire grid packed away and off everyone went on the formation lap. Kasumi was directly behind Hugo, and stayed behind him as the cars paraded around Melbourne. Every once in a while, Kasumi weaved left and right to get some heat into the tires. The last thing she wanted to do was to start the race on cold tires. If she wanted an opportunity to score Valkyrie's first points in F1, then a good start was the first step toward doing so. Pacing behind Hugo, Kasumi's breathing was slowing as she got into the zone. Nothing else but the road ahead of her as she finally made her way around the last chicane.

Lining up in her spot, Kasumi held the clutch paddle and pressed on the throttle as she watched the lights. Watching the lights intently, she watched them stack -- and then fall as she released the clutch pedal and let the car launch forward. Gingerly applying the throttle, Kasumi went up the gears, every gear prompting more throttle input as the tires established traction. She found herself weaving to the right side of the track, close to the pit wall as she and presumably Hugo overtook a few cars just off the line. Right now was a drag race to the first corner, and Kasumi found herself jockeying for the corner with a car next to her as the braking point quickly came. Practically standing on the brakes, Kasumi beat the car next to her for the dominant position, and ended up in front through the initial chicane. "Great move, Kasumi. Keep it up! Pick your shots." Her engineer piped up, as she left the initial chicane and headed down the next straight.
"Well, Arya..." Joe chuckled, overlooking the spread of food they had throughout the dining commons. Even after all this time, Joe still found it difficult to figure out what to choose at times. He had his favorites, but he didn't want to repeat the same meals over and over again all the time. That was a surefire way to make sure that they would stop being his favorites. "The mac and cheese is pretty bomb here -- the cheese they use is so good... and the way that they bake it? Maaan, it's like eating magic." The combination of pepper jack, mozzarella, and other assorted cheese blended perfectly and created a delightful symphony of flavors, at least to Joe's tastes. "You really can't beat the mac and cheese if you don't know what to decide."

"As for me..." Joe trailed, his eyes traveling over various foodstuffs throughout the facility. His eyes eventually settled on one thing. It was something he'd had before, but it was something that he also considered a safe option. "I'm gonna go with the chicken parmesan, over some nice pasta noodles. Love me some chicken parmesan." It just so happened that the chicken parmesan and the mac n cheese were located near each other.

Walking to the stack of trays and cups, Joe grabbed a pair of trays and cups, before handing one of each to Arya. "There's also desserts and whatnot nearby too. If you like cookies, cake, pie... or sweets in general -- they got it. I like the soft serve here personally." The dining commons looked to be more of a self-serve sort of situation, with the more specialized and items that required special preparation requiring attendants of their own and staff to handle it. "Feel free to grab as much as you want. With how much we pay a year for this stuff, they let us take as much as we want, so get your money's worth!" Joe chuckled, as he walked up to the lineup of chicken parmesan and pasta, grabbing a plate. "Drinks also work the same. Free refills all the time." Joe mentioned, before he turned to Arya.

"Oh yeah, that reminds me -- what are you studying? I don't think I asked you earlier."
"Absolutely." Kasumi replied, chuckling and shaking her head at the same time as she listened to Hugo's comment. Every minute that they spent on that race track together would be a chance to go toe-to-toe. Unless directed otherwise, Kasumi and Hugo were going to go at it every chance they could get. They were teammates, but they also had goals to set out. There was a reason why there was a driver's championship and a constructor's championship. Kasumi wanted the best chance for herself to show her skills and prove that she was meant to stay in Formula 1.

The prestige racing series frequently produced wash-outs. For every Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher and Ayrton Senna, there were your Taki Inoues, Chanoch Nissany, or Al Peases. Kasumi didn't want to be remembered as a failure, especially not after being the first full-time driver in Formula 1. Kimberly chuckled, "Just don't cause any crashes out there." The team principal said, lest they have repeats of what happened in Baku in 2018 or Spain in 2016. Kasumi nodded.

"I'll see you guys at the technical meeting later." Kimberly said, closing her laptop and holding it against her chest, walking away from the drivers.
this looks cool!
After her first official qualifying laps in Formula 1, Kasumi put up a very respectable time that put her into P19. It wasn't enough to make it into the next qualifying session, but it was a much better result than many were expecting. They weren't dead last in their first qualifying session, and were ahead of teams that had been in Formula 1 far longer than they were. As Kasumi pulled into the pitlane, her car was promptly carted inside. Once she was inside the garage, Kasumi undid her harness as well, taking off her gloves and climbing out of the cockpit as she also undid the strap to her helmet, pulling off all the stuff that was on her head before taking a deep breath. Looking at the Q1 results, it seemed like George Russell had managed to squeak into Q2, leaving his teammate (and Valkyrie Racing and Haas) in the dust.

Walking up to her engineer, the woman was overlooking the telemetry of Kasumi's qualifying lap, her throttle and brake inputs in the form of a graph. The woman turned around to look at Kasumi as she grabbed a sports drink off the table next to her, taking a sip as her engineer cleared her throat. "How'd the car feel?" The engineer asked, as she moused over Kasumi's telemetry once again. "Good, though on turn 3 I had issues getting the car to rotate. Missed the apex by a bit. Front end wasn't quite getting in like I wanted it to." Kasumi said, as the engineer nodded. "What about high speed stability? Downforce okay?" Kasumi nodded, "I was able to keep it mostly flat through turn 11 and 12, car held on very well."

Some time had passed and it looked like there was going to be a battle between Verstappen, Bottas, and Hamilton for the pole position of this grand prix. Those three were fighting like crazy for and putting up burning laps after laps. In the meantime, however, Valkyrie Racing was about to wind down and debrief after their first qualifying session. Kimberly had just interpreting the data and reading over reports from all the engineers and analysis. Right now, Kimberly wanted to talk to the drivers themselves first, and see what their take on things were. Kasumi was still sipping on her drink, standing before her team principal. "So, how are you guys feeling right now? First qualifying for all of us -- and you guys did a great job out there. Great work, you two."
"Oh, it's no problem! I'm studying Civil Engineering -- eventually I want to be a city planner and help develop cities and build them." Joe chuckled, before hearing the girl talk more about her experiences with being new to campus. The feeling of determining whether or not you've got everything you need is never good feeling, and Joe understood that feeling just as well as anyone could. "Well, if you've forgotten anything you can always buy it. There's stores on campus, and stores not too far away from campus either. Anything you need, you can likely find it here or online." Joe chuckled.

"Nope." Joe shrugged, as he put his hands in his pockets, "Not really my thing." Joe knew that networking was a rather important aspect of the college life but he didn't care much for it. He knew that there were other ways that he could've secured a job, especially knowing the connections associated with his family name. Not to mention, Joe's grades said a lot about how he worked too. As it stood right now, he was due to graduate magna cum laude. That alone was a very attractive thing to have on his future degree.

As the two started to make their way to the dining commons, the student thought about the potential dining options there were. There weren't any that stood out as particularly bad, but he didn't know what this girl liked on the other hand. "That's up to you to decide, I like the things they put out for us. The chefs do a good job here, that's for damn sure." Joe said, as they continued to walk through campus, looking over at the girl. "I do recommend the chicken though. It's always juicy and never dry. Well seasoned, too." Joe also heard the girl's last remarks, "Well I'm glad I can be the first person you can talk to here. Sometimes people are in their own world. It happens. But not everyone is like that and I think you'll learn that eventually."

The pair eventually made it to the dining commons, as Joe held the door open for the girl to walk in. Inside were a bunch of tables spread out, sparsely occupied at this time of day as the kitchen workers continued to stack and organize trays of food. The mixed scents of various dishes lingered in the air as Joe walked up behind her. "Oh, by the way, I don't think I caught your name. I'm Joseph, but you can call me Joe."
Hana stuck behind the girl's Z as she tried to figure out a way behind her. It was still very hard to figure out a way to get around this Z, considering every time she tried to dive in the turn was blocked off by her car. The drifting made it very hard for her to make an advance on the inside and make a safe pass. Hana's hand was forced and she had to back off, every single time. There was no way she could make a safe pass. However, there were still a few tricks up her sleeve that she could use to try to get past this Z. Another corner was coming up and Hana was right behind the Z. It was going to be a risky move, but Hana figured it was worth trying. As they started to brake, Hana peeked inside, peering inside of the turn and making it look like she was going for a pass on the inside, before quickly switching outside and seeing if she could overtake out there.
The sound of a talent show was about the worst thing that Anna could've ever heard come out of Jett's mouth. Anna wasn't even sure what she had to offer at something like that. The thing she was good at she did for a living -- but otherwise she didn't really have anything that could win her a million dollars on America's Got Talent or American Idol, let alone a talent show on this show she was on. Still, what was probably even more surprising was that Jett was apparently a magician as well. That was real interesting, and something that Anna couldn't have ever predicted based off of what she knew about Jett right now.

"Me?" Anna tilted her head curiously. "I don't really have much to offer. Nothing that'll really catch someone's eye." Anna laughed. "Unless you consider building machines to save people a talent I can display." Anna continued to chuckle, a slight awkward energy to her. "Maybe I can be Jett's assistant or something." Anna joked, before she shoved some more food in her mouth. Madison shrugged at Bella's point. "I hope they don't do that. I don't think people want me to bust out the stand-up."

Anna whipped her head at Madison, "You... do stand-up?" Madison laughed and winked. "Not so much actual stand-up -- it's more like a routine I memorized for a role once. Not my jokes, but I know how to deliver it. Not like they can tell the difference, anyway."
Joe looked at the girl after the rather awkward encounter, and a sense of relief washed over him as she seemed to have played it off calmly. That was good -- he didn't want to start off the new school year by pissing someone off and having them be mad at them and have a sour impression of him. Joe was a bit too familiar with that sort of sentiment, and it wasn't something that he wanted to carry with him in the new school year. Luckily, this girl seemed very calm about it which put Joe at ease. The man chuckled sheepishly, as she asked about his experience with this school. "Oh, no, no it's not." Joe said, "It's my fourth and hopefully final year here." Joe said, glancing around the campus. "I've been here for a while."

"But even then, I still find something new every time I come back to campus. I'm sure it's even more crazy if you're new here." Joe remembered the first few days on campus himself, where so many things were new and the transition in between university and high school were as jarring as ever. "Yeah, all the years I've been here, the clubs haven't changed much when it comes to how they recruit." The university senior sighed, "I wonder how their membership numbers are doing... I'm not a member of any of these clubs so I honestly can't tell you." Joe scratched the back of his head.

"Oh, me? I was just heading to grab a bite to eat. I haven't eaten all day so I figured now was as good of a time as any to get something." Joe smiled, as he glanced toward the direction of the dining hall. Suddenly, Joe had an idea while he was there. "Why don't we get a bite to eat? Since you're new here, I might as well treat you to a meal here. It's the least I can do." Joe said, before gesturing toward the direction of the dining hall. "What do you say?"
