Current I feel like I'm rotating through the same four characters constantly since RPs die so quickly I never get enough quality time with them. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It was a bit confusing following everyone’s trail of thought as they talked about the upcoming plan in whispers. Even Min-Ji was moving to help despite her initial reluctance. Good for her, good for her.
Still, they seemed to be getting all on board, even if talking about far away cages was puzzling. Something about electricity? River currents?

Humans. Psh.

Speaking of humans and those who aren’t, Kailani raised a hand to give a little wave to Randolph as he stalked off. He was using his large words again, like ‘sequentially’. He was funny like that. Then again, maybe it was a thing from his species? If she could eat enough ghouls to morph one and imprint their language maybe she’d understand.

“Someone’s cut the power, everything’s shut down.”

The alien’s pondering was cut short at the whisper from the woman beside her, honey eyes instantly dilating and the fine little hairs along Kailani’s arms rising. She didn’t even notice Marina leave following her statement, everything in her being zeroed in on the apparatus strapped around her face. Her teeth ached as the thought of biting into something with actual mass, with solidity, was becoming a very real possibility. Drool was beginning to pool in her mouth, Kailani’s heartbeat drumming in her head as her thin, little human fingers began to tremble.

As though her thoughts were a physical manifestation there was a sudden movement behind her head and the muzzle slipped off her face. Kailani’s gaze followed it as a gloved hand removed the contraption - bite the metal and swallow the wires - placing it beside the woman who did it. The alien’s eyes snapped up to meet Julia’s, and for a moment she regretted not just eating the muzzle the instant it came off. It was still possible, especially as Julia pat her on the shoulder - crunch the bones and rend the flesh - but she needed time. Just a little more patience.

Her teeth kept aching.

"You wouldn't mind breaking the piece of metal bound to my ankle, yeah? You can eat it after we take it off. Deal?"

The human words man was talking. It was hard to concentrate as everything around Kailani was suddenly edible again, suddenly within reach. It took a quiet reminder - ’follow the plan or you’ll starve again’ - to focus on the men at the table adjacent.

Right. Right. Release them and they will assist her as well. Right.

Rather than respond verbally and even risk drawing attention to herself, Kailani grinned at Alfred - a wide, stretching thing that showed deceptively flat teeth. Taking the opportunity, she slipped beneath the table as though getting away from the escalating confrontation between the women nearby - taking Julia’s bowl with her and biting right into the side of it in a glorious mouthful. It was hard to focus - if this fails, when will she next eat? - and so she had to keep moving. To the first man who requested her assistance, with the giant encasements around his arms. She didn't even bother calling for him, just reaching out to grab the chain between his ankles and tugging them to get the man to shuffle closer, to hide her work.

And then it was a fantastical shatter of metal, the quiet snapping virtually muted beneath the cacophony of arguing nearby. The links disappeared into Kailani's mouth but it wasn't enough, even with all that she was fed that morning. She followed the chain right to Körbl’s ankle, the restraint crumbling before she used her hands to yank the other half of the cuff off and slam into her mouth. It was only the slight sting of her own teeth scraping across her fingers that had her stopping from reaching for the ankle too. Focus. Focus!

With the ball and one cuff gone, Kailani forced herself to merely bite the other cuff, carefully and regretfully avoiding skin. She patted Körbl’s leg before crawling further down the table, to Alfred. With him it was even easier - harder to control - as she grabbed his leg to bring up to her mouth.

She licked his ankle briefly.

Then the dampener around him folded like sand beneath her teeth, and as the rest of the device dropped she grabbed it to shove in her mouth in lieu of Alfred's flesh. As the last splinters of metal disappeared, drool dripping onto the floor, Kailani tried to focus once more. There wasn’t anyone else, so finally, finally she could feast. But where? Who? There were so many options - she could literally just bite into the table she was currently under, or the guard only feet away trying to stop Iris and Ameliya.

And then she caught sight of them. Her target.

Kailani kept low to the ground, wiggling between Abby and Alfred’s legs to shimmy to the next table, then crept underneath the one right at the argument. It had the perfect view, Kailani peeking out of the edge on the end of the table upwards. The balcony containing armed guards was along one side of the wall, an ever-hanging threat with their painful guns and height advantage. In this guise, the alien was as helpless as anyone else against them.

But now the muzzle was gone, and with it the collar that kept her from changing forms.

As the table began to glow a molten orange, and the sound of guns being readied and aimed even further above accompanied it, a guard shouting for the pyromancer to stand down, it took only a second for Kailani’s form to change. Like a shark breaching the waters the large form of the Devourer burst forth from beneath the table, the molten material clinging to her form. Jaws locked around the guard closest, his legs collapsing to the metal catwalk as the rest of him disappeared. Huge claws clung to the balcony, the whole structure shuddering from the weight - and as some turned to begin firing uselessly on the alien, as screams and shouted commands and even excited cheers were beginning to break out, Kailani bit down on the balcony and shook her head like a dog to a bone.

The whole thing shuddered, before it broke beneath the onslaught and split in two. A chute of delicious humans sliding right towards their awaiting, molten death, screams echoing in tandem with the excited, alien shriek.
So! The electronic containments have been turned off, though not removed, leaving only the more physical constraints active.

@Restalaan Since my little alien friend has been informed of this, and Ameliya with Iris are currently creating a distraction, when I write my next post would it be alright to have Kai gesture Korbl under the table and get his restraints off? Feet and even the arm restraints, or just feet if you'd prefer? Otherwise I can cut the post off just asking him to come down. Or we could collab quick.
Kailani

Considering how her smile hadn’t dropped at all since being released from her cell, it was no surprise that Kailani just absolutely beamed when the newly introduced Min-Ji accepted her handshake. Mentally, she patted herself on the back for being able to tell what the other woman meant. Human interactions were easy!

“How do you guys feel about blowing this pop stand?”

… What was a pop stand? Nevermind, humans were still perplexing.

As Abby explained her plan Kailani still had no idea what a pop stand had to do with it, but she quickly caught on to what she was suggesting otherwise. Others seemed to as well, considering the other tall woman who joined the table, casting wary glances to some of the men. And, as Abby spoke, Kai grew excited. Despite her cheerful demeanour, the alien severely disliked it here. She hadn’t been in her real form in months, a feeling of being forced into a coat two sizes two small and unable to remove it. More than that, though hunger was a constant friend, it had never gotten this bad before. The gnawing feeling twisted at her gut, sapping her strength and some nights causing utter agony as she could feel her very body turning in on itself.

It was not a pleasant way to go.

“This sounds like a stupid plan.” Caught off guard by the candid comment, Kai turned back to her conversation partner, blinking in surprise at how anyone wouldn’t want to escape. But, that wasn’t what she said was it? She just didn’t like the plan.

“The utensils? Uh, yeah! Yeah. They never give me enough food, so they’re like little snacks, and no one else eats their’s.”

"But you could eat the lock, right? If you wanted to, you could eat those cuffs straight off your wrists?" That was from the other girl, causing Kailani to twist to look at her at being addressed. Her eyes flicked down to the metal wrapped around her own wrists, chained together to only give her some slack. Julia had said earlier that the cuffs were nice, but in truth Kailani didn’t think so at all. She had politely not voiced it, since it was offered as a compliment and Julia had seemed rather upset. Now she pulled at them, the chain rattling slightly.

“Definitely! Well, kind of. I can eat anything, just … not with this on.” Her fingers came up and sunk through the small gaps of the muzzle around her face, tugging at it in frustration. She even met Marina’s gaze across from her, sympathy flashing through her eyes since the other woman had a similar problem. “And I can’t get it off since it’s connected to the collar, and the collar shocks me when I try, because I’d eat the entirety of The Borehole given the chance. Which is also why I eat the utensils, because they can fit through this! Ugh, I’m so hungry all the time here…”

Kailani groaned, head tilting back dramatically even as she tugged at the muzzle once more before finally dropping her hands, lest she be tempted to eat her own fingers. A sigh, full of longing was next before she finally looked to Abby.

“... So yeah, I’m in! Nothing can stand up to my teeth!” She gave her a sparkling grin that showed them off before finally turning back to Min-Ji. “Hey, even if you don’t like the plan, if it’s working out do you want me to come get you? I’ll eat the door right off your cell if someone gets this off me.”

Because they weren’t strangers anymore, and that’s what not-strangers do for eachother, right?
"No luck with your issue Officer?" Amelia asked, noting the usually bubbly guard's dour demeanor.

"Happens when I'm lied to."

"I read the fortune as it was presented to me," Amelia said. "Patience. I read good fortune and good fortune will come."

I want you to know I read this and my immediate thought was during the breakout the guard being met with, "What good fortune. You'll have a quick death."

Nah thank though don't have a discord. I'll get my first post in post haste.

Looking forward to your intro! Make sure you join the cool table with all the short girls.
Kailani

The reaction from the other inmate was odd, not quite in line with the other humans Kailani has interacted with so far. She looked human, even if the woman’s proximity caused a spark across her face that still stung, but in that moment’s pause between the shock and response it struck the alien that she was a little different from the others.

Of course, then Min-Ji offered her a smile which just caused Kailani’s own grin to grow in tandem, and further her chest to almost puff at the compliment. ‘Cute’. There was even a polite thank you! No one said thank you here!

Then the other woman leaned in, as though about to whisper a secret between them. Kai tilted her head akin to a puppy, meeting the swirling vortex in her gaze with nothing but earnest curiosity.

"It isn't a good idea to get too close to strangers. People here will try and kill you for less."

That… made sense, in a way. Almost everyone here was biting words of glass shattering in her teeth, of the way metal tried to stand strong before the break. Even getting close to this stranger caused the shock - even if she smelled delicious, the sparkle of a broken wire sharp and warm against the roof of Kai’s mouth.

Another bowl was slid in front of her, immediately and effectively breaking the Devourer’s train of thought. She was already picking up the spoon to begin eating before even looking to who gave it to her, offering a loud and bright thanks to the white haired woman, as well as a comment.

“Monty doesn’t sound as good as your end name. Montressor! It’s much more fun!” Admittedly, Kailani only knew of her a bit since the woman liked to talk with Randolph, and Randolph was full of words but smelled delicious. Marina was strange too, since she smelled of fur yet had none to show. But she gave her food to Kailani sometimes, and therefore she was the best fur-smelling human in the entire Borehole.

Speaking of, there was someone staring at her. There was no reason to stare at Kailani though, so she must’ve been staring at her food.

With the cafeteria filling up it was no surprise this small person came and sat beside her, Kai’s grin never so much as twitching even as she wrapped an arm around the bowl protectively. She hadn’t seen this woman before, but it was often new inmates who came to sit next to her - the alien’s human guise was small and non-threatening until you saw her eat. It was only after studying this new addition did she relax. The gloved inmate had the coloration of a forest, greens and browns that should’ve complimented each other, but instead wilted in on itself in dying vegetation, rot on Kailani’s tongue and in her breath.

She still wasn’t sharing her food though.

Instead, she would share words. It was not a guarantee that she would like the words, like the metal man who fled the table at Kai’s mere greeting.

“Hi! Your gloves are strange, but I like the green light. They’re much better than mine.” To emphasize she held up her hands - as much as she could with one arm wrapped around the bowl - to show the cuffs still attached to her wrist.

Actually, the man who had approached Rue and Ameliya nearby said something odd that had Kailani staring at her cuffs ponderously. “Lock, it’s a pleasure.”

… Maybe speaking politely to the lock would do something? She brought the cuffs closer to her face.

“Lock, I won’t eat you today.” A heartbeat past. Then another. Nothing happened.

That man was just strange, then. Maybe he was an alien too? That’d be nice, she should talk to him-

Wait - strange. Strangers. Greeting. Kailani whipped her head around to Min-Ji, eyes bright and excited and lips parting behind the muzzle.

“Oh! I get it now! You were saying - hold on, I have to eat this before someone else does.” She returned to her bowl of nutrition paste, enthusiastically wolfing it down within seconds, the spoon joining it in her mouth once the contents of the entire bowl were scraped away. Even as it crunched in her teeth she was already turning back to her first conversation partner, sticking out her cuffed hands. Careful not to touch though, merely in offering as a human handshake greeting.

“So since you didn’t try to kill me, that means we shouldn’t be strangers, right? I’m Kailani, what’s your name?”
Kailani

It was fun, in a way, listening to the others talk about themselves. Then again part of Kailani’s good mood could directly be attributed to the amount of sustenance on offer to her, the low rumble in her stomach that seemed like a constant companion quieted for … at least an hour, probably!

It was never enough.

The alien’s eyes were drawn to her left again as the corpseman spoke, voice low and scraping - teeth against rock, crushed to pebbles. He was hard to hear, but the weapon being pressed to the back of his neck was much more obvious. The seemingly ever-present rictus on Kailani’s face widened, showing her teeth locked behind the muzzle as her gaze moved to the guard ‘warning’ the man beside her. Only when the guard stepped back, when the vigilante’s own attention moved from Körbl, did she go back to listening to the latter man’s story. It even ended in the best way - with another piece of food for her.

“Thanks, Körbl!” She chirped, immune to any mocking present in the gesture. The last remains of food were scraped out, followed by the spoon - which was neat as it was wood, and instead of crunching beneath her teeth it splintered.

Then just as many of the guards and other inmates’ attention was commanded, so was Kailani’s, even as she absently picked up one of the trays and tried to get the edge of it through the muzzle - a futile task, considering a spoon was about the largest thing able to get through. The sight of the exuberant and colorful woman was a surprise, but not an unwelcome one. Though, the noise the Demoness made at the entrance was distracting. It was almost familiar - a low rumbling trill nearly that reminded her of her own species. Kailani’s teeth clicked together in a poor imitation of the chittering her true form was so proficient at, this mouth too stiff to be able to accurately recreate it, though she managed a bit of a rumble in her throat.

Yet as soon as Iris got close Kailani’s attention was diverted to waving eagerly, taking the offered lollipop and even leaning into the hand ruffling up her dark hair with what could almost pass as a purr.

“My favorite Iris!” The small girl returned at the greeting, tearing into the offered candy. Crunch went the bright rainbow bit beneath her teeth, the stick following shortly after. She couldn’t help but eye the little cube candies the demoness offered Iris, but didn’t dare just take. Even if they were spicy and delicious.

She was still hungry.

Always hungry.

The others were talking amongst one another, some responding to Abby, others having their own private conversations. Most everyone was finished with their food however, and she had pilfered almost all of their utensils. More surprisingly, she wasn’t stopped from doing so, or taking the offered food. Most of the time the Borehole liked keeping her on portions - maybe they were feeling generous today, or … or were trying to foster relations between inmates? Honestly, that would explain Iris’ presence - she seemed to know everyone.

Well, if that was the case…

Without a word to the others at the table Kailani stood and moved on to the next, sparing a moment as she passed to grin widely at the guard who had threatened corpseman. Her nose brought her to the next gathering, the smell not unpleasant but different. She slid into the seat next to a metal man, a brief thought crossing her mind on how he would crunch deliciously.

“Heya! Are you-” He stood up abruptly, a snarl twisting his features.

“Can a man not get peace to eat here?!” He grabbed the tray and stomped off clear to the other side of the room, leaving Kailani to look after him puzzled.

She was going to eat his fingers, given the chance.

Rather than chase, Kailani let it roll off her back for the most part and instead scooted further on the bench towards the woman he was sitting next to, only for her nose to twitch as she realized this was who the strange scent was coming from. She sniffed the air once more, tilting her head as the equally strange noise registered from the woman next to her. It reminded her of her collar, on the occasions where it lit up on her attempts to change form. Burning flesh and twitching limbs. Yet the smell of burning wasn’t present, just that faint noise. If anything, the air was … pleasant. Clean, like the outside.

The alien inhaled deeply, her exhale slow and almost peaceful. Was it really from the lady next to her, almost as small as she herself was? It had to be, right? Testing this theory Kai leaned over, almost mimicking her position to headbutt the corpseman's shoulder, only to jolt as a familiar crackling sensation flashed across her face. She jumped in her seat, leg hitting the bottom of the table with an audible whack.

"Oww." She rubbed her nose through the muzzle, giving a little side look. Despite it, after a moment she drew her legs up to her chest to throw her arms over in a relaxed position on the bench, grinning wide and cheerful to the quiet woman but making sure not to touch again. Even she knew a warning when it happened!

“Hey! You smell delicious.”

Her guard was going to have a heart attack before the day was over.
Kailani

The best breakfast Kailani had ever had was actually shortly after coming to The Borehole. The researchers had sat her at a table absolutely laden with food and let her eat to her heart’s content, even bringing in seconds, then thirds, and when they inevitably ran out of food just began piling random objects on the table. The table itself was last to go, though the researcher had stopped her from eating the chair. By then, though Kailani could never truly be sated, she was … content enough. At least enough to happily answer the questions asked of her.

Of course, the next few days she was given the absolute minimum they could get away with to test the equilibrium of her appetite. It didn’t feel that long ago. She can still hear the groan of her stomach, feel the pain of a thousand hungry little teeth in her torso, and the churning of her body beginning to eat itself inside out.

At least they don’t let it get that far anymore. Just close, sometimes.

So this morning was turning out more than just nice, it was the second best breakfast the Devourer had here! Sometimes others offered her leftovers, and one time even a whole plate since they weren’t hungry. Yet now? Now, the corpseman had given her his bowl first, prompting Kailani to beam at him despite his stare, jagged like the crunch of glass between her teeth. As he was next to her she even offered him a bump of her forehead to his shoulder in ‘thanks’ - her ‘personal’ guard made a strange face and tensed up at the action, but what was Kailani supposed to do? She was too short to shoulder bump him properly!

The small girl pulled the bowl close, keeping one arm possessively wrapped around it even as her honey gaze slid to her other target for scraps, that bright expression only increasing into a wide, toothy grin at being offered a second helping! Kailani’s free hand took the tray from the Demon - only to make a curious noise in the back of her throat at the little cubes added to it.

Enrichment cube? Either way--

“Thank you!”

The tray joined the bowl in the possessive grip Kailani had around them, and quickly acquired friends. She snatched the spoon thrown at her from her redheaded hallmate, prompting another chirpy little thanks that was half cut off as the alien shoved the spoon in her mouth greedily. Next was Kailani - while refusing to let the tray out of her arm - scrabbling to reach over and grab the other gifted utensils from Alfred. She briefly eyed his bowl and tray, but ended up leaving it despite his offer to take those as well.

“I can’t get them through.” She stated simply, and for a moment naked longing was plain in the little extraterrestrial’s gaze as she peered at his place settings. Of course, then Alfred winked and it took her a moment to realize this must’ve been a joke. It was appropriate to laugh now, yes? She laughed just to be sure.

Their conversation turned back to talking of strength, which Kailani had absolutely no interest in. Mostly since there was food in front of her that she was allowed to eat, but also since she was sure none of them were stronger than her teeth. Maybe the rest of her body, though. But not the teeth! Still, the others were working themselves up with talk of strength, so a little growl built up in her throat in warning before she focused on her plunder.

With two extra servings, utensils, and even the strange little cube offerings, the Devourer let the others talk with their words words words, focusing entirely on getting every scrap of the slop. It was honestly gone in record time, a prickly feeling on the back of Kailani’s neck like the scrape of a tree bark on her tongue - fear of the food being taken away. Maybe not by those around her, but if not them then the guards deciding she had too much. So the contents vanished, the muzzle clanking against the bottom of the bowl as she attempted to spoon the very last dregs, followed shortly by the familiar plastic and sometimes metal utensils, leaving her with the strange little cubes.

In a rare moment of thoughtfulness, Kailani picked up one of the little things and rolled it between her fingers. The little sprinkly bits clung to her fingertips, but the rest of it didn’t bend. A quick sniff too-

“It smells spicy!” A thoughtful hum, even as she popped it into her mouth.

A pause.

The tray clattered as Kailani promptly shoved the rest of the little candies in her mouth, dropping one in her haste to get them all in the muzzle. She disappeared under the table after it, ate a piece of fallen food on the ground while she was down there, then banged her head on the bottom of the table reemerging. Ow.

Out of food, Kailani’s gaze had drifted over to Abigail, taking her in. The girl was acting odd, seemingly not focused on anything but mouthing along to something unknown. Just as the little alien was considering if she could steal her utensils too, the girl came back to the table’s conversation. With a sigh of disappointment, and a grumble to herself about still being hungry, Kai finally joined the actual conversation.

“I don’t have any superpowers. That’s a human thing. Um, but I eat a bunch? Like, things you guys don’t apparently? Oh, and I breathe out oxygen. That’s apparently a big deal.” She tilted her head, seemingly considering something.

“And I’m called Kailani!”
Kailani

”English isn’t my first language,” Was the bright response to Abigail, a colorful grin curling Kailani’s lips, visible behind the muzzle. She wasn’t technically wrong. ”Though, we never had balloon animals either. Are they tasty?”

Maybe the Borehole enjoyed interaction between prisoners, since there always seemed to be so few empty seats in the cafeteria during mealtime. Either way, it meant that their table was soon filling up. A man like a corpse on her left, a strange sweaty man who could apparently get ‘things’, the animal man who always smelled delicious but talked too many words was hanging about, a woman who's voice was like thunder and earthquakes, as well as some more human and not-so-human looking people. Including her hallway companion that always made the floor light up when they walked! Though, she curiously seemed to have had a problem with her guard. Kailani’s eyes followed the man that had brought the redhead close, watching him leave after his rough treatment of the two human females to her right. Unblinking. Staring.

- and what was that strange smell that covered up the delicious talking man?

Finally, with an inaudible snap that broke the tension in her, Kai turned back to Abby and Ameliya with that same natural rictus in place.

“Hey, don’t worry about it! If they don’t starve me to death first, I’ll definitely eat him when I can get this muzzle off.” She paused for a moment, humming thoughtfully and glanced along the walls before pointing at a particularly rat faced guard standing post across the room, escorting some prisoner no doubt. ”And him. He’s a pervert. Likes trading shifts to get camera duty all the time.” The second half of her sentence was a stage whisper, more repeating gossip and a particular warning she was quietly given than any personal experience. Apparently she looked very small for a human.

Kailani’s eyes swept along those who had filled the table once more, noting the others she was warned of. Demons, vigilantes, other cannibals. Nothing to really be afraid of! At least, she didn’t think she felt any fear? Fear was a foreign concept. Unlike hunger. Speaking of, her eyes swept along the table for a third time, this time pointedly taking in the trays of her table mates.

Well well well, it seems someone was finished their breakfast. Kailani’s gaze snapped up to meet the Alfred Gunther’s, her grin stretching even further as she leaned into the table, her crouched position on the bench bumping her legs into the edge.

“Are you done with that? Thanks!” She reached out, the cuffs jangling at her wrists as she grabbed his spoon and promptly shoved it through the muzzle without waiting for an answer. The metal crunched easily under her teeth, disappearing into her gullet in a mere moment. The young woman could almost feel the disapproving glare of her escort, but as long as she didn’t go overboard it should be fine. Next she turned to the corpse man at her left, the vigilante - whatever that meant - that was only stirring his bowl.

“Not hungry? Do you mind if I…?” Kailani gave him a hopeful look, clasping her hands in front of her in a classic begging position. And peeked around him to the woman with the voice of a rockslide, giving her the same. Vaguely, she could tell that her escort had tensed up against the wall. After all, the guard was the one who had warned her against these particular people - but he had food that he wasn’t eating and the other one was wearing a mask and couldn't even eat anyway!

Truly, that was the real crime here.
Kailani

It was really no surprise that howling her grief to the ceiling did little for Kailani, it never worked for any of those locked up here, at least in the positive sense. Honestly, all the fruits of her labor provided was one of the guards snapping at her to quiet down and, more importantly, breakfast was soon.

What a strange word, breakfast. Humans were so quaint when they weren’t holding her against her will.

The promise of a meal had the intended effect of muffling the girl’s cries though, and she ended up picking herself up to drag to the bars of her cell. The metal muzzle clanked as Kailani pressed her face to the door, a low whine ripping from her throat in tandem.

”...But I’m hungry now,” The Devourer muttered sullenly, but the guard that had warned her was already pacing away. At least the thick metal wasn’t electrified - that was only when she tried to escape, or eat them, and sometimes eat her clothes. As evidenced by the large chunk missing out of her uniform’s right cuff.

The others in this place were also rousing. The screaming and low murmur of voices, the faint sobbing that always seemed to permeate the air was growing louder as the building awoke. Even the inmate across from Kailani was awake, not that she knew anything about them. Just that sometimes there were little flickers of light, and once in a while big roaring flickers of light, but mostly the former. Right now? Little ones. Flick, flick, flick went the ground, barely able to be seen in a peak of the door around the solid concrete. Honey eyes followed the flashes of light, anything to focus on other than the time ticking away with the rumble of her stomach.

Then the light stopped, and Kailani dragged her gaze up, meeting the human’s blazing ones across from her. Despite her lack of energy, a tired grin curved the small girl’s lips behind the bars of the black muzzle.

’Food?’ The word was silently mouthed to the woman, despite the loudness of Kailani’s earlier protests. A secret request between two, as though the very thought of being overheard would bring trouble. Of course, she then emphasized it by opening her mouth and pointing to it.

“Don’t eat your fingers.” A sharper crack of metal against metal made the small girl jump, and that grin quickly focused on the guards that had appeared at the end of her cell. The one that spoke glared at her darkly before moving across the hall, but the second was familiar, a lanky woman that was more often than not assigned to escort the alien. Something about a ‘rapport’? That word was foreign, but Kailani could only assume it meant ‘they haven’t tried to eat each other yet’.

”Breakfast?” Was the simple question even as Kailani stuck her hands through the gap in the bars, already trained in this routine with the shocks of their metal sticks. The guard hummed in confirmation, snugly fitting cuffs around her wrists before she was allowed to withdraw them. And despite the routine, despite knowing it might give only a brief moment of satisfaction, it was hard for Kailani to watch. The way the guard’s fingers moved around her transformation’s smaller ones, seeing how small and slim they were and if she could just grab her escort’s hand in one moment, a finger could slip right through her muzzle into her waiting jaws-

Then she gestured her back, and she obediently followed the silent command before the door was open and Kailani began the path towards her favorite place.

“...Did you eat your shoes again?”

”Yep! And the enrichment cube.”

“Rubik’s cube. We’ll have to find you something else to keep you occupied.”

”Foo-”

“Not more food.”

By the time they reached the cafeteria and Kailani was allowed in line, she was practically vibrating at a frequency that could shatter glass. The cuffs remained on, but with enough slack she could pick up the tray and be provided with her nutrient slop. With an excited ‘Thanks!’ that was bright and out of place here, Kailani retreated at practically a sprint. She wasn’t allowed to eat unless at a table, so she moved to the closest one with an opening and slapped the tray down, jumping up to crouch on the bench.

Watching Kailani eat was a bit like watching a shark attack, she was told once. The muzzle prevented her from going at the food with the ferocity she was used to, but using the spoon - and being careful not to bite it in two quite yet - the gruel disappeared at an alarming rate into her mouth. Any company around her was disregarded as long as they didn’t get between her and her meal, and it took a whole half minute for her to finish, including scraping the spoon around the bowl obnoxiously to make sure she got as much as possible. Then the spoon disappeared in her mouth too.

Of course, the problem with eating quickly was that then the food was gone quickly too. Far too quickly, and far too little. The small girl picked up her bowl, trying to nudge it against the muzzle to see if she could get even the edge close enough to bite-

Her head tilted to the side as her tablemates spoke, and for a moment Kailani could only focus on the food still on the table. It was mesmerizing, and she bet she could get a good couple mouthfuls before a fight broke out…

Of course, she didn’t want to be shot again if she did that.

With herculean effort Kailani looked up, away from the delicious muck, to the two speaking at her right. Her head tilted, and the curiosity helped dull the ache of ever-present hunger.

”What’s a clown?”
