Liam had left Smaug with Blaine at the gym to train during the contest. In Liam's appeal round, he used Blissey to do a performance that involved hearts flying everywhere from attract beingf partnered with Aromathereapy and Heal Bell.

Liam registered and was, as usual in the green room prepping the balls that held the Pokémon he was going to use.
I will have to take my computer in for a repair soon, I do not know how long it will take, maybe a few minutes, or I might be without for a bit. I felt I should just let you guys know.

Liam admitted that it wasn't his initial idea to battle her, and he was going to battle with Blaine. (TBH, the training was really just going to be fluff so we can move on).
Blaine took them into his secret Gym inside a volcano. Liam sent Smaug out. Smaug Mega Evolved into his Y form, making the sunlight more intense insie the volcano.
