The Rowlet trotted up to Liam and looked at him curiously. Liam squated down. "Why, hello there little Rowlet." Liam said with a smile. Rowlet began to rub aginst Liam's leg. "I think he wants to go with you." Hala said. He tossed Liam Rowlet's Pokéball. "Thanks." Liam said. He decided to nickname Rowlet "Robin".

Hala nodded in confirmation and tossed three Pokéballs into the air. He introduced the Pokémon. "Rowlet, the Grass Quill Pokémon, a grass/flying type, Litten the Fire Cat Pokémon a fire type, and last, but not least Popilio, the Sea Lion Pokémon a Water type."
A big man in tropical shirt walked in. Lillie informed Chuck the he was Hala. She introduced the heroes to Hala.
"It's an honor to meet you." Liam said.
"Likewise." Hala said. "It's not often that I meet a champion from another region."

"Well, its time to look out for some new Pokémon to catch." Liam said thinking aloud. Joy mentioned that there was a special tournament happening in town that was an Iki Town tradition. It is done for good luck before people start out on the island challenge, and each trainer is permitted one Pokémon for it.
Liam stopped by the Pokémon Center and sent his three A-game Pokémon to storage to take a break, leaving him with just Jangmo-o.
To be fair, the movies aren't necessarily cannon.

"What are you going to do about it tough guy?" One of them asked. "You tourists need to understand that Alola is Team Skull's turf."
Liam smirked. "Why don't you just run along before you get your Pokémon hurt." The grunts, not likeing that comment tossed ten pokéballs collectively into the air, with three Salandit, three Zubat, three Yungoose, and a Garbador emerging.
"You ready to eat your words punk?" the one said.
"Hey Tupp, this guy looks familair." said one of the other two.
"Shut it Zipp!" The one in Liam's face growled back. Liam tossed One Luxury Ball into the air and Goodra emerged. "Dragon Pulse." Liam said casually. Goodra fired the blast and wiped out all but Garbador. The three grunts were shocked. The hastily recalled the KO'd Pokémon and tried to make a run for it.
