Fair enough, but for the record Lagoggth isn't an evil primordial being. More of a neutral one since a passion for knowledge can be used for both good and bad ends. As for why Jonah would join; Quite simply, to discover new things. After all, there are a bunch of people from a new world standing right there with stories to tell and information to offer that wasn't possible to access before.
Plus uncovering the reason for the Waves and the origins of the creatures that make them up...
But I respect your decision. Thank you for taking the time to look over the character.
A man in his mid twenties, appearance wise Jonah almost appears to be a stereotypical man of knowledge who's more focused on uncovering the secrets of the world rather then such minor things as politics, religion or his own personal health. He is generally seen wearing a robe that is clearly well tailored to provide protection against both the cold and extreme heat (as well as a bit of padding to protect against minor weapons), but has clearly been worn down through use and age so that it is now just a rather tattered brown color.
Around his rather lean waist (someone had clearly gotten into the habit of missing out on meals while his mind was elsewhere) is a rather basic and tattered looking belt, connected to which is a surprisingly well made and maintained looking dagger covered in alien, painful for most to gaze upon magical markings that seem to alter and shift on their own.
Jonah himself has rather pale white skin, with dark and messy hair that has been intentionally kept short so as to be out of the way. Likewise his beard is short and unkempt as well, since he semi regularly shaves it off when he remembers to do so or it just starts to bug the hell out of him. His eyes are a dark blue color and rest behind a pair of basic looking spectacles to aid him in reading.
Jonah was born the bastard son of a newly risen lesser nobleman and one of his maids. Count Hawkstrong's first marriage had failed to produce anything in the way of an heir and due to a very real concern that his well earned title and holdings would be lost to the King upon his death without someone to inherit, he was forced to legitimize Jonah as his son.
However, being the heir to the holdings of House Hawkstrong would not be Jonah's fate. When he was two years old, the first Countess Hawkstrong suffered a tragic accident and died falling down a flight of stairs, breaking her neck and killing her before help could arrive. After a period of mourning, Count Hawkstrong married again and by the time that Jonah was five years old his little brother Barney was born. Since Barney's claim to the family's holdings was stronger due to be born within wedlock, by succession laws he became the new heir but that left Count Hawkstrong to decide what to do with his first born.
He couldn't denounce or lose Jonah since between having to legitimize a bastard and the tragic lose of his first wife, doing either would completely destroy his prestige at court at it was shaky enough already; While his first wife had died in an accident, much like when such things happened there were whispers that it was the kind of accident where the victim had been given a... timely bit of assistance? Rumors of murdering his son on top of all that would destroy any credibility he had.
At any rate, there was no harm in having a replacement heir in the event that heavens forbid Barney ended up dying at a young age. Entrusting Jonah's education to the court scholar, the young man took to his education like a duck to water. When it was discovered that Jonah had a talent for magic, he was sent to get the best magical education that money and what budding political connections the young House Harkstrong could buy/afford.
While Jonah was a wonderful student of magic that any magi would have loved to have since he was bright, curious and had a passion for learning that made teaching him both a joy and frustrating at the same time, the cold harsh truth of the matter was that his actual ability to use magic was... limited. Jonah just didn't have the raw potential of his fellow magical students despite working harder then most of them.
At least... not until Jonah did something drastic.
Driven to his wits end by the limits of his natural abilities, Jonah started to seek ways to improve his magical potential via unnatural methods. Initially his studies were supervised by one of his favorite instructors who allowed Jonah to start looking at certain forbidden tomes and areas of research since be believed that the fifteen year old was mentally mature enough (and magically weak enough) to do so.
However, Jonah quickly found... clues. Little hints and puzzles in the texts he was looking through that suggested sites and troves of knowledge that had been undisturbed by mortal eyes for generations, if not longer. Believing that he had found such a location, he went looking for a method to increase his knowledge and magical prowess. In a way he was successful.
He discovered and made contact with Lagoggth.
Lagoggth, the great devourer of knowledge, is said to have existed for as long as there have been things to know. Some ancient texts claim that Lagoggth has consumed every truth in the world, and that no fact can be real until Lagoggth has digested the infinite complexities of information and excreted it as simplified fact that mortals can comprehend. It is omniscience given consciousness.
Lagoggth still hungers for knowledge, although there is none left that it has not already consumed. For this reason it seeks out mortals, who by their nature know almost nothing and learn new things every day. When Lagoggth makes a pact with a mortal, it means the mortal is allowing it to sit within their minds at all times, vicariously experiencing the rush that comes from learning something new. Lagoggth only offers to make pacts with those who have a thirst for knowledge and a deep appreciation for the fun of learning.
Mortals like Jonah.
In exchange for letting Lagoggth sit in his mind to experience his love of learning first hand, Jonah was granted magical potential far beyond what his natural limits would have allowed for him in the form of becoming a warlock. When Jonah returned to civilization, he jumped into his studies with a renewed passion that boarded on the manic; While before he had the love of learning and understanding of theory but lacked the magic to actually do anything with that knowledge or to advance to higher studies, now his hard work and dedication was paying off!
Jonah's dedication to studying, learning new things and his habit of disappearing to parts unknown with little to no warning for unknown periods of time did not go unnoticed by his peers. The fact that someone who originally lacked the raw magical power to really become anything respected in the field suddenly started to grow into a level of power normally reserved for those gifted with magic after disappearing on a trip to parts unknown was also noticed and started rumors that Jonah had made some sort of deal with powers unknown.
Fearing that a powerful magic user was really a servant of some vile, heretical power that was planning on endangering everyone around him, agents of the Church of Heroes were called in to investigate... but found nothing worthy of condemning Jonah of worshiping some dark and dangerous power. Unable to find anything outright heretical or signs that Jonah was planning anything to harm his fellow man, combined with pressure from several very influential magi and a House Hawkstrong that was on the rise (some of which was due to Jonah's own ascension in society) forced the Church to drop the investigation but the incident has not been forgotten by either side.
--- Preferred Weapon(s): Daggers, magical foci.
Appearance of Weapon:
Abilities of Weapon: Strong Magical Foci - Makes channeling magic much quicker and easier.
Knife - Also good for stabbing and cutting things.
--- Skills/Abilities:
Name of Skill: Multilingual
Abilities of Skill: A lifetime of researching study has allowed Jonah to understand, read and speak in quite a large number of tongues ranging from those used in everyday use to dead langues unknown to most.
------
Name of Skill: Weider/reader of Occult Magics
Abilities of Skill: His time studying to be a mage went a long way to developing his ability to read magical writings and runes, but his pact with Lagoggth and the study of more... exotic magical writings has allowed him the ability to cast spells in ways that other magi simply are not able to... as well as read and write in words and runes that they simple cannot understand.
Downsides of Skill: Due to his pact with Lagoggth, Jonah is never truly alone inside of his own head. While Lagoggth isn't a very social Elder God, it is prone to giving quests for new knowledge and whispering pieces of interesting but useless triva during Jonah's dreams to peek his curiosity between major discoveries.
'Occult' writings and runes also tend to be drawn in blood, as well as the occasional hazard of bleeding from the eyes when reading it.
..........
Name of Skill: Binding Shadows
Abilities of Skill: Shadowy, tentacle like tendrils will appear around the target with the intent of binding and restraining the target so that they cannot move. The tendrils do not appear to need a solid surface on which to form, since they have been seen forming in mid air. Depending on intent and the power poured into the spell, more tendrils can be summon to ensnare multiply targets or instead of restraining can be used to constrict and crush the target instead.
Downsides of Skill: Most sane people tend to be rather freaked out when they see this spell in use. Certain members of the Church of Heroes would have some rather... pointed questions if they saw it in use. ---- Inventory: Tent, tinderbox, food rations for three days, pack donkey, 20 gold, several journals worth of arcane musings, several blank journals, several jars of ink, sizeable jar of quills.
Rupert looked up from inspecting his flamer to have a quick glance at his rather underwhelming new lord and master, Lord-Captain Drake. He hadn't actually met the captain in charge before Lord Drake arrived on the recently rebranded Golden Aquila (He had actually asked some of the older crew members about the renaming. Much to his own surprise, their home being renamed like that was actually fairly common but due to their way of life often had no impact on them in the slightest), but from what stories and information that he had been informed of from the story tellers and elder crew members, Lord Drake was currently being viewed in a neutral light as far as captains went.
The fact that he clearly didn't seem to care about the inner workings of his ship or the interactions between the ship tribes/nations that had formed had actually been seen as a positive by most of the crew since it meant that he wasn't likely to get underfoot or try to change anything... removing the torpedo bays to replace them with more cargo space had caused an uproar among the ship tribes, but it hadn't been due to the action itself; The Spottar-Gunnar Coalition had been dedicated to operating and maintaining the torpedo bays and the change was forcing them to redefine who they were. It didn't help that Cargonia was making a case that the expanded cargo bays fell under their God-Emperor given domain and the members of the SGC would either be absorbed into Cargonia or at the least become a vassal state, but considering how large that would make Cargonia, none of the other tribes were having it.
It was doubtful that something as serious as a war was going to break out, but depending on how heated some things got there might be a few brawls, on honor duel or two... maybe even an assassination if things really started to get out of hand.
Still, that didn't exactly distract from the nervousness that came from boarding the shuttle with his new lord and master along with a handful of his junior Janitors. In all of his years he had never once set foot outside of his home, but having to escort Lord Drake on a recruiting mission while the diplomatic talks were taking place meant that he couldn't take the more veteran or diplomatic members of the Janitorial Union with him without risking things turning nasty.
Taking a filtered breath through his breathing mask, he finally decided to speak to Lord Drake as the current head of his defense squad "Lord Drake, what kind of personal are you hoping to find on this mission?"
Appearance: Standing at 6'4 with board shoulders and a body that has been shaped by hard work and labor, Rupert might not be the biggest or more intimidating person that the world has ever seen but he has been able to thrive none the less. His skin is white but years of being exposed to the various heat sources that the ship has to offer has burnt in a rather strange looking tan on his face where his safety equipment doesn't cover, the full extent of which is reveled when he removes his goggles or breathing mask.
His hair is a dark orange, but time on patrol around the ship often means that he needs to keep it short for professional reasons due to how much grim and filth tends to coat it before the end of his shift. His eyes are a dark blue.
Equipment/outfit wise, Rupert is almost always seen wearing the outfit of his office as High Janitor:
A pair of tinted safety goggles to protect the eyes from sudden bright flashes. Breathing mask with an oxygen tank in the event of encountering a hazard on the ship in which having a personal air supply is required. The standard chem treated and resistant yellow janitor jumpsuit. A pair of yellow, firm grip and anti-slip galoshes (steel plated to help protect the feet). Carapace breastplate Lasgun/laspistol (depending on what section of the ship one is patrolling for size reasons) Hand held flamer. Melee weapon of choice (In Rupert's case, he favors a chainsword).
Personality: Born into the Janitorial Union, Rupert understands the value of hard and often unappreciated work that needs to be done for the benefit of all. Having lived his entire life aboard a void vessel and often traveling through the parts of it that most voidsmen either don't know or don't care about, he is well aware of the dangers that can arise from neglect and is highly vigilant in the face of threats raging from basic maintenance to the variety of nasty critters and beasts that often try to infest and make their homes in the dark places of space craft.
Rupert will come down hard on the lazy and the incompetent, viewing both as worse then sin: Laziness and Incompetence not only risk the lives of the one committing them, but endanger the lives of everyone around them and the safety of their home in general. Rarely do the powers that be deem fit to provide the resources to reclaim parts of the ship lost to the void of space or other such hazards if the area isn't deemed important and allowing a piece of their home to be lost without just cause is inexcusable.
That being said, Rupert isn't above hearing people out when they have suggestions to improve a method in place. If it is discovered that steps in a maintenance cycle are unnecessary or only need to be done every so often rather then every time, he will happily streamline the process... but Emperor help the fool who tries to do this without alerting him first.
History: Rupert was born into the Janitorial Union to a recently widowed mother; His father had been cleaning up a mess in the Medbay when the ventilation pumps failed and flooded the air with toxic fumes. Everyone who had been in the Medbay when it happened were incapacitated within seconds to die a horrible death, but some quick response time managed to see the area sealed off until repairs could be made and the area made safe again. The failure was discovered to have been caused by neglect due to an argument that was going on between the current team of tech priest Explorators and the Janitors over duties of care and who was in charge of maintaining what.
While he was raised without a father, when Rupert turned five he joined the cleaning staff in their duties of making sure that the ship remained at an acceptable level of cleanliness. The work was long, hard and at times dangerous due to the many hazards present in a void traveling capable ship. Most of the other crew members didn't care about the work you did and complained if something was missed. But it was work that needed to be done, so he did it without much more then some small grumbling every now and then.
When he reached his teens Rupert volunteered for Janitor training. Most children of the Union attempt the training at some point of another, through most in turn will end up dropping out of the program for a variety of reasons. Rupert's determination and vigilance paid off in the end through, completing the brutal training and becoming a full Janitor by the age of twenty. For eight years O'Donald prowled the ship to ensure that it remained in safe, operational condition and remained as free of invaders and pests as possible.
A few months prior to the ship being turned over to its new Captain in the form of Rogue Trader Drake, the prior High Janitor passed away and a new one had to be decided upon. As was tradition, the Janitors began by asking if any Janitors felt like they were not prepared for the responsibilities of the job of High Janitor and wished to decline being a contender. Round two involves the remaining Janitors being judged by their peers for any faults or flaws that would make them ill suited for the role. After the vetting process, the final round is to have all remaining Janitors that are still contenders for the role of High Janitor will draw lots, with the winner becoming the new High Janitor.
Rupert, after narrowly managing to defend his contention to become the High Janitor from the allegation that his father's death due to the fighting of the Janitors and the Tech Priests might make him hostile towards the servants of the machine cult, won the draw and ascended to High Janitor. Currently, he doesn't know what to really think of his new boss, but he intends to do his people and ship proud.
Skills:
Cleaner: Ever since he was five, Rupert has worked hard to keep the ship that is his home as clean as possible. While this does mean that he's qualified as a normal cleaner, these same skills are also useful for making... other types of messes disappear without leaving much in the way of evidence behind. Maintenance Expert: While the tech priests might have a greater understanding of technology in general, when it comes to his home ship Rupert understands her systems and what makes her run better then any dozen robed cyborgs you could shake a metal rod at. Ship Defense Expert: When it comes to repelling boarders, warp daemons or just pests in general, having such a good understanding and knowledge of ones home turf makes the job so much easier. The fact that he has spent at least eight years doing these very things gives him good experience as well. Head of Security: While Rupert would happily punch out anyone who tried to label him as such, the role of High Janitor includes most, if not all, duties and responsibilities of the Head of Security for the ship... and to a lesser extent, the Captain/Rogue Trader Drake. Ship Diplomat: In general, the every day members of the crew and their representatives would be more likely to talk to one of their own rather then some noble from Terra or his orkish pet... but the fact that Rupert understands the various nations on board the ship and thus who he needs to talk to helps get things done a lot smoother.
Equipment:
A pair of tinted safety goggles to protect the eyes from sudden bright flashes. Breathing mask with an oxygen tank in the event of encountering a hazard on the ship in which having a personal air supply is required. The standard chem treated and resistant yellow janitor jumpsuit. A pair of yellow, firm grip and anti-slip galoshes (steel plated to help protect the feet). Carapace breastplate Lasgun/laspistol (depending on what section of the ship one is patrolling for size reasons) Hand held flamer. Chainsword of Office.
Miscellaneous: Like almost all ships in the Imperium that have had a crew survive long enough for several generations to be born, national identities and tribes within the ship itself tends to form. Like all nations, as years go by they start to develop their own culture and history as events shape them. The Janitorial Union was formed shortly after an event recorded in ship history as 'The Betrayal', though exactly when this event happened is unclear. The head of the ship's armed forces at the time had gathered together loyalists to his cause and launched a mutiny in an attempt to seize captaincy, the resulting civil war gutting the ruling body of the ship as well as bleeding security dry. The head of security died and his mutiny failed, but without a unified enforcement force or strong leadership the crew had to fend for itself.
The Janitorial Union was originally made up of the ship's cleaning and maintenance staff, banding together and claiming a independent existence from the other nations that were forming at the time. While other nations fought over territory, the Janitorial Union instead decided on a more... nomadic existence since their duties required them to travel all over the ship. They still claimed key areas that were important to their roles of maintaining and keeping the ship in good condition while also raiding the various ship armories in order to not only defend their few tribal strongholds but also to take over the duty of purging the ship of unwanted... pests that would have normally fallen into the hands of the ships security forces.
Masterful diplomacy with the other ship nations ensured a peaceful existence and arrangements that would not only benefit them, but also the Janitorial Union as well. The cleaning staff and janitors were free to travel the whole ship in order to perform their duties without interference from whomever owned the area while also securing trade goods for their services, as well as serving as official messagers across national lines. Janitorial strongholds also became neutral ground for other factions to meet and discuss matters without having to worry about betrayal or assassination.
As time wore on, the roles of the cleaning staff and the Janitors began to change. While the cleaning staff maintained its role of cleaning the ship and minor repairs, the Janitors themselves morphed into a militant organization of pathfinders who roamed the ship in search of threats as mundane as neglected ship maintenance to active threats such as invaders and monsters roaming in the dark places of the ship that needed to be driven out. While the various ship nations maintained their own fighting forces, due to the Janitors ability to go anywhere in the ship freely to engage whatever threat was discovered to the ship they quickly rose to be considered an noble, elite fighting force that started to draw recruits from the fighting forces of other ship nations.
The position of High Janitor came about shortly after the ship returned to Imperial space and a new command was installed. While the title is more or less Head of Security in everything but name, the High Janitor also bares the responsibility of being the spokesmen of the ship's nation states and the (often times) foreign command of the ship so as to prevent... incidents from arising due to misunderstandings.
Only once in the history of the ship have the Janitorial Union gone to war with another ship state: When Cargonia attempted to expand its power and influence over the complete starboard side of the ship, it attacked all nations in its path... including one of the Janitorial Strongholds. The resulting war lasted to years, but in the end Cargonia was broken and remade into a more... humble nation by the coalition. While Cargonia paid dearly for its warmongering, the Janitorial Union ensured that the peace forced upon it was bearable, earning them no small amount of gratitude from the defeated ship nation.
