happy new year!! <3

thanks to @Zapdos for character approval -- I'm excited to write with you all! please don't mind my long first post, my first posts always get a bit wordy :'3 future replies won't be so long! <3

Alaine was early. The receptionist had her sign in then told her she could wait in the lobby, so that was what she did -- of course, she picked the farthest corner of said lobby. Back in a corner without windows, next to some kind of big, potted plant that added a touch of nature to the otherwise sleek, modern interior or the building.

Wearing a black jacket that matched the theme of her uniform, at first glance it might've looked like she was in a jacket and some kind of weirdly-patterned leggings, but a second glance would probably make it obvious she was already suited up. She wasn't sure how they were supposed to show up for this on onboarding thing, nor if they were supposed to be unmasked or not; she knew some heroes showed their faces, but she wasn't one of them. Even before John had gotten her the suit, she'd kept at least part of her face covered. Would she be expected to unmask around hee coworkers?

For a while she just watched people come and go; heroes mostly, some she'd heard of and some she hadn't... A few un-costumed employees, who she assumed were civilians who worked in the apartments that didn't need superpowers. Like records or dispatch... Though being able to work in those departments was a kind of superpower on its own, in her opinion.

Leaning back against the wall in her white and black uniform, mask already on and arms crossed, she half-wished she was going to work in one of those behind-the-scenes positions. She wasn't entirely sure she deserved to be on the frontlines, as if she was some pristine hero -- what if she messed up? She felt fairly certain her coworkers would be hardy enough not to be severely injured by her, but what about civilians? What if she went to pick someone up off a burning building and her adrenaline was too high and she wasn't focused enough and she accidentally gutted them instead?

Alaine shifted a little where she leaned back against the wall, too uncomfortable in her unfamiliar surroundings to take a seat. Instead of letting the uncertainty overwhelm her, she focused on the ever-present, study hum of cosmic energy in her body. Steady, even, otherworldly. Alaine closed her eyes briefly. Breathe in, breathe out...

The sound of someone else entering the building brought her attention back to the room and she opened her eyes again, straightening slightly and remaining leaned against the wall in the corner, hopefully not gaining much attention. An easy enough goal when the first new onboarding employee to take a seat looked like a Victorian witch. Alaine wondered if the book -- that she'd bet twenty bucks was a grimoire-type situation -- was a necessary part of the girl's ensemble.

More eventually came. Another girl, this one wearing a more normal-looking hoodie and sweatpants; she carried a few bags with her and soon began the process of applying makeup and curling her hair while they all waited. Alaine found that an odd time for it, but what did she know?

Then there was the flashy one, livestreaming with his phone. Alaine grimaced inwardly, careful to keep out of the view or at least turn her head away whenever the phone's camera threatened to catch her. He didn't plan to stream the onboarding process, did he? That couldn't be entertaining content... Though he was narrating to whoever was watching like it was.

She took another deep breath and let it out again, refocusing on that cosmic energy as heroes continued to arrive and current employees continued to come and go. She could minutely feel them all, even when she had her eyes closed. There was a little of that mysterious energy in everything, everywhere, everyone. Like cosmic dust.

Her eyes snapped open when the receptionist ran over. Before Alaine had a chance to process what was being said, there was suddenly a bedraggled-looking dude in the lobby -- and then the lobby was gone.

Her body reacted before her mind caught up with the situation so she was already hovering a few inches off the ground when she and her fellow new hires found themselves in another part of the city -- which spared her an awkward stumble like the livestreamer, or a case of disappearing-chair like the witch-girl.

The others jumped into action like professional heroes. The streamer -- she was sure she'd heard of him before, but she couldn't recall the name. Something-light. Searchlight? Sunlight? Sunlight or whoever he was made some quippy remark and suddenly had a shield and spear on hand, the latter of which he threw right at the dragon they were suddenly faced with.

That made Alaine's heart jump into her throat briefly, but she hardly had time to worry about it as the others started gearing up. The witch girl said something about a tall order -- no kidding -- then something about needing strong magic to kill the dragon.

Kill it? Why was killing the thing apparently everyone's first instinct? Clearly they were in an unoccupied, abandoned part of town. There were no civilians in immediate danger, and she could've been wrong but the dragon didn't seem like it was in a rush go eat anyone or anything since it was taking the time to demolish old factories.

Alaine hesitated as the brick wall formed, created by the Victorian girl; the one in a hoodie was ditching said hoodie and sweatpants to reveal she was also in uniform already before climbing to the top of the wall and looking... a little manic, and ready to shoot something from a contraption on her arm.

And -- wait, who the heck was that? A new woman was there, exhaling a puff of fire as she strode past then all towards the dragon, each step accompanied by the magical appearance of armor and weapons on her body.

And there was that guy over there, with the hat. Why was he there? Who was he?

Alaine inhaled sharply, a flicker of cool, starry light briefly sparkling around the white eyes of her mask. If nothing else, she could at least attempt to distract the dragon from the very random squad of heroes that had just appeared out of nowhere.

Pushing off the ground like she was jumping, Alaine failed to return to the ground and instead took off, zipping up into the air. Getting up on eye-level with the dragon, she wordlessly manifested her cosmic blades -- two small bursts of dark, crackling energy at her hands.

With a little mid-air twirl that made the flash of her blades more of a spectacle, Alaine attempted to catch the dragon's attention as she darted to the side. Hopefully, being in the same airspace as the monster would make her more of a priority to it, despite the fact people were throwing spears made of light at it.

"Hey, big guy! Over here!" She waved her arms, cutting in close and pulling away again. "What are you doing way out here? Let's leave the people alone, yeah?"

Name: Alaine Barrows
Alias: Blackstar ("Star")
Age: 25
Gender: female
Family: Roger Barrows (father), Laverne Barrows (mother), Brook Hall (née Barrows - younger sister), Grace Kingsport (née Barrows - younger sister), Ezra Barrows (younger brother), Elijah Barrows (younger brother), Joy Barrows (younger sister)
Appearance:
↳ Standing at 5'6, Alaine is fit but not thin, describing herself as "sturdy". She has a fair complexion that tends towards being pale, a few random small scars from life scattered across her body and nothing very notable. She has a beauty mark/freckle at the corner of her right eye. Her eyes are grey-blue and she has excellent vision; her faceshape leans towards being squarish with a greek nose, high cheekbones, and full lips. Her hair is a mousy blonde-brown, and she currently has a red peekaboo dye job. She doesn't wear makeup and the only accessories she wears are a simple, stainless steel band and a friendship bracelet made for her by Brook and Grace before they went to college. (She wears neither of these when in uniform.) Outside of "work", her style consists mostly of jeans, t-shirts and sweaters, and cowboy boots. She avoids dressing up as much as possible.

↳ In uniform/costume, Alaine wears a suit that is a dark grey with white details (black details for stealth and/or night). She wears a mask that covers her eyes and the red-dyed portion of her hair. Her cosmic energy blades tend to create a small field around her gloves that often creates an inverted colors effect.

Superpower: Flight + Cosmic Energy Blades (overall mild boost of physical capabilities -- slightly heightened strength, speed, endurance, healing)
Flight: Alaine can fly surprisingly high and has discovered she can survive low levels of oxygen for extended periods of time, but she's not able to exist in space or stay in the upper atmosphere for more than ten minutes without suffocating or freezing. She is able to fly slow enough to hover as well as fast enough to outpace a commercial jet (around 400-500mph) but she hasn't attempted to go faster and is unsure of her max flight speed. Flying at high speeds or altitudes will gradually wear her out and she'll need to rest afterwards (think of it like running a marathon). Flying uses energy either way, and her ability to remain in the air can fluctuate with exercise; for example, when she first discovered she could fly she couldn't stay in the air for more than ten minutes. Over time and practice she's built up a flying endurance. If she were to fall out of practice she would have to get back into it before being able to fly to higher altitudes or for prolonged amounts of time.

Cosmic/Dark energy blades: Alaine is able to manifest a mysterious kind of dark/cosmic energy, and it takes the form of visually-crackling/flickering "blade" shapes that protrude out from her hands/fists with a hard-to-describe, inverted kind of light. These blades are at minimum four inches long and the longest alaine has ever been able to extend them was around three feet. When slicing into things they have a similar effect to lightsabers, able to melt/burn through most materials (though thicker/denser materials will take longer to melt and require more energy. Generally Alaine tries to avoid this as it can wear her out quickly and leave her vulnerable). Touching organic material with these blades can cause burning and instant cauterization of wounds. The blades cannot be maintained when separated from her body for more than a second or two (she's tried) and thus are useless as projectiles, meaning she often has to go in for close combat. Like flying, she has to keep up her endurance with the blades in order to maintain them for longer amounts of time, extend them further, or make them stronger.

Other: She has an overall mildly-enhanced physiology, putting her speed, strength, endurance, and healing at slightly above average. It's not necessarily superhuman (as other, unpowered humans could match her speed/strength/endurance with proper training), but it is an effect of her powers and grants her a mild edge over the average person.

Skills: Unrelated to her powers, Alaine is amazing with animals - she loves them and has a natural aptitude for working with them. She's artistic and enjoys sketching/painting and is fairly good at it, but far from proficient; she's got a natural eye for detail and enjoys problem-solving and psychoanalyzing.

Weaknesses: She tends to be a loner and can be bad about speaking up in a group, especially when she's unfamiliar with the others involved. She tends to self-isolate rather than wear herself out with failed social interactions or surface-level relationships, and will often refuse to admit when she's hurt (physically or otherwise). Despite this, she's fiercely loyal to her family and will easily choose them over almost anything; it's not unheard of for her to wear herself thin in multiple ways trying to help them and/or keep them safe.
↳ In relation to her powers, she's not undefeatable and can still be hurt by things that would hurt anyone else -- bullets, sharp objects, high-speed impacts, falling from serious heights, lack of oxygen/food/water. Falling out of practice with her powers will also lessen her ability to use them properly.

↳ She's scared of wolves (lupophobia) 🤷‍♀️

Equipment: Her uniform/costume. She wouldn't say no to a gun or other standard weapons if she got a hold of one.

Personality: observant - introverted - resilient - curious - self-controlled - guard dog

Alaine is overall a kind and hardworking individual. She's naturally quiet and more of a loner, but in a group she does her best to make everyone feel comfortable and keep things running smoothly, if it's needed -- otherwise she tends to fade into the background and observe. Despite these quiet tendencies, she's more than capable of sticking up for herself. She's earned a reputation in certain circles as being tough, independent, and a bit of a vigilante, never one to back down from a fight when someone's honor or safety is on the line. She's fiercely loyal but has a hard time making good friends because she's had her loyalty taken advantage of before, and blames herself for several incidents that led her to believe she was better off on her own. Even though she tells herself that often, she still feels very lonely at times and wouldn't mind someone to be close to.

She has a tendency to be protective over people she likes, or those that remind her of her younger siblings. Although she's patient in many ways she also has no fondness for arrogance, cruelty, and people who don't use their heads, and she's been known to keep a grudge. Although she's incredibly resilient (and values that trait in others), she also tends to keep her problems under wraps and handle them herself, believing they're her responsibility and not wanting to bother anyone else. "Responsibility" was hammered into her from a young age and, despite going through a period of uncertainty about what her responsibilities were with her powers, she feels the weight of expectations (from herself and others) heavily.

More than anything alaine considers herself a guard dog. Always putting others first, working tirelessly, and knowing when to be gentle makes her a good friend - being keenly observant, tough-skinned, and unafraid to attack makes her a dangerous protector.

Biography:

Relationships: Aside from her family and John, n/a. She's fairly new to Lafayette City (less than a year) and has kept to herself for the most part.

hello! I'm interested in this concept! I took a peek at the starter that's already up too and I love it haha, looks like it'll be a lot of fun ^_^ if there's room for another, I would love to apply... though the hero character I have in mind is a female, and of the character sheets officially posted already it looks like all but one is female xDD I don't want to like overload the group with fem characters lol and if @Zapdos feels the same then I'm happy to just chill out and watch how things progress (and maybe jump in later if there's room/opportunity?)

on the other hand, if nobody cares either way lol, I'd be excited to whip something up and submit a character application! <3

thanks for the consideration and I hope this was the right place to post, apologies if not ^_^' hope you all had a good christmas (if you celebrate) and happy new year in advance! <3

realistic Crosshair image inspiration 👀
a tentative and hopeful search for "the bad batch"!

basic details
- 1x1, private/pms
- multi-paragraph, 3rd person
- romance, action, adventure
- 18+, (violence, dark/heavy themes, romance)
- would prefer not to double x'3

basic plot ideas
- could take place during the events of the last season of tbb or after (after the first ending, before the final scene with Hunter/Omega)
- I'm looking for someone willing to play Crosshair against my fem!oc <3
- my oc is a human whose younger sister is force-sensitive; the two of them were in hiding together after Order 66 but (via some incident I'm not entirely decided on lol) get separated. more info available via pms :3
- I was thinking about my oc potentially running into the batch when they pass through the planet she's on for whatever reason; maybe she attempts to stowaway on their ship, maybe she helps them out somehow, maybe she asks for their help, etc. or, maybe she runs into/helps Omega and Crosshair after they've escaped from Hemlock and are attempting to reconnect with Hunter and Wrecker. I'd love to chat about it via pms and figure out an actual plot lol <3

if anyone's at all interested or has questions, please don't hesitate to reach out! <3
