@Holy Soldier I just noticed that Jack isn't on the Smash Arena sign up sheet even though I asked. I hope you didn't forget me :C
@Holy SoldierSpeaking of typos and shit...

<Snipped quote by Holy Soldier>

Lol.

Sorry. Couldn't resist Forgot to point it out earlier.

Hahaha. That typo just made me think of something amusing.

Jack Slate: Dead to Rise? No it's Dead to Rights why would it be Ris-

Frank West: I'VE COVERED WARS YOU KNOW.

Jack Slate: Damn it, West. Fuck off! I have trouble standing out as it is without you trying to sabotage me. Go be obnoxious to the Resident Evil folks.

Frank West: I'll be back Jack! You may think you're safe in obscurity, but one of these days when you least expect it you'll get beaten to death with a television set by someone in a dress with no pants and it'll be ME.

Jack Slate: I'm pretty sure out of the thousands of possible characters in this slurry pit of a universe it could ONLY be you, Frank.

@Etherean FireAwwww, thanks. It was honestly the best way I could describe my expectations for this roleplay at the present time. That and 'Fabio with Gems' is just my automatic description of Teric from LoL.
@Holy Soldier I'd like Jack Slate and Shadow to go to Spyro's World please.
@Crosswire@WingsOfBronze@Etherean FireActually, that may have to change. We can't have Sans with 1 HP through the entire game. Regardless how fast he is, there will be times where he'll get hit. I also await the day where I ban the character from ever being used in this game. Undertale will be a hard game to create continuous level ups for without anyone calling BS. The characters are more than likely going to be relying heavily on Special Abilities.

I agree with you in regards to his HP. He'll die quickly otherwise. However saying you want an excuse to ban a character feels kind of mean spirited Holy. :C

Unless I'm simply misreading the tone.

Sans may not have a clear route for ability progression suited for the leveling up system of the roleplay, but that's the case for plenty of characters who would otherwise be great potential additions to the game. Not every character has explicit growth or development in their games.

Jack for example doesn't have any growth in Dead to Rights: Retribution. So the most I can do is chop up his core abilities and deal them out piecemeal for 'upgrades' and after that I'm stuck giving him the few weapons he can pick up in game [i](pistol, sub-machinegun, shotgun, assault rifle, sniper rifle, rocket launcher, the usual boring shooter deal) and relying on Special Abilities for anything interesting.

Stuff Jack can Do
  • Punch People
  • Shoot Guns (only able to pickup and carry two at a time, they're more or less disposable since ammo pickups aren't a thing in game)
  • Grow emotionally attached to head and chest high walls due to Wallhugging Syndrome (Aka Gears of War Disease)
  • Bullet Time
  • Disarm Enemies
  • Preform melee/weapon take downs on weakened enemies.
  • Have is monstrous dog separate enemies from their pelvises. Aka Shadow literally maims their groins and I'm pretty sure he eats their balls. It's kind of disturbing now that I think about it
  • Kind of/sort of share senses with Shadow? It's not really a stated thing, but in game Shadow can see enemy heartbeats and thus more or less see enemies through walls. Even when playing as Jack you can do this so...

And that's pretty much it. Though he does put on a neat suit of G.A.C armor (though it doesn't do anything in game sadly) and temporarily boards a large powered exoskeleton with a gatling gun for a shoot-em-up section near the end of the game, so I could potentially have those as upgrades if I stretched things but probably not.

However that doesn't make Jack bad.

I chose him knowing full well he wasn't exactly deep or well developed. However I saw this game as a chance to expand on his character/personality. Getting to play grizzled, punchy, loose cannon cop who is a virtual nobody in the world of videogames alongside wisecracking skeletons and Gem Fabio from LoL sounds like an amazing experience.

If you forced people to stick to player characters with clearly defined ability progression then you'd eliminate tons of games and potentially interesting characters. I understand there has to be some kind of basis to work off of, otherwise people are just pulling stuff out of their butts which becomes very problematic very fast.

You're trying to keep things orderly and that's good policy for a moderator. At the same time however I think people should be given some leeway. If a problem comes up then there's no reason we can't be diplomatic about things and come to a discussed solution.
I just had an amusing realization. If San's only has 1 Hit Point but has insane dodging abilities, then the most terrifying weapon he could ever come up against would be the Excalipoor. In Final Fantasy V it hits for only a single point of damage, regardless of your stats, but it's a guaranteed hit.

Up against that I guess you could say he'd be...boned.

I'm sorry.
<Snipped quote by Crosswire>

because of how the stat system works they could effectively build sans as an incredibly fragile char by having only 1 in both defensive stats and putting almost everything into dex. thus making a Dies in one hit rule a bit redundant.

I would like to note that in undertale San's hp is 1. this is in the game files if you data-mine them apparently so in universe sans would in-fact die from any hit that does at least 1 damage. Which I imagine is most of them. Not an argument for putting that mechanic in I just thought I should note that fact for the discussion.

I'm back from my physical therapy session.

I didn't know that Sans genuinely only had a single hit point of health in the game. That's pretty surprising. From a gameplay perspective they could just give Sans a stupidly good dexterity and ignore defense entirely. I just don't want someone to lose their other great character to small, but unavoidable damage. Though it would be kind of amusing to see Sans die by just tripping and falling on his face, exploding into bony toothpicks from what normally would be a harmless pratfall :P

However WingsofBronze can make their character however they wish and if Holy is fine with it, then that's the way it'll be. I just felt like weighing in for discussion's sake.

@Holy Soldier@WingsOfBronze

Okay, then. I simply wanted to address the "weakest enemy" clause. I think trying to build him as a player character from his boss mechanics might be a bit of a mistake. He can do whatever he pleases with stats, of course. I specifically mean that the segment suggesting that he can be felled in one hit might come as problematic. It only seemed to work that way in-game because the Genocide player was simply strong enough to do that, not because he was objectively weak (hence, they saw him as "the easiest enemy" by the time they reached him), but it was cancelled out solely by the fact that Sans was mechanically impossible to hit. Basically, the fight is programmed to drag on for as long as possible. Here, however, he wouldn't have an immaculate dodge as he did before, so to keep the part about him folding from even the weakest blow may present itself as something of an obvious issue.

My two cents, anyways. I could be completely wrong about some of that, or even just overthinking it. It's ultimately up to you two, either way; whatever you both decide.

If I could add my own piece to the pile (I hope I'm not overstepping my bounds or anything) I think Etherian has a point. Having Sans around as a player character would be a lot of fun given his personality and god awful puns. However building him off how he operates as a boss might not be the best approach. One-hit kills are problematic. If he's caught in a situation where he can't avoid damage then he's toast and that might not be as rare as one might assume.

There's also the fact that this is 'player' Sans and not 'boss' Sans.

In the Genocide route Sans is only a one-hit KO enemy because that point you're OP as hell. If you look at him from a grounded power level then Sans would likely be fragile, but not killed in one hit.

I'd like to expand on this more, but I have physical therapy and need to go now.
@Crosswire You might want to change the mention from Holy Warrior to Holy Soldier. ^^"

Gah! Thanks for catching that. This is what I get for writing under the effects of sleep deprivation.

How are you doing today by the way? I'm really enjoying how you've written Frisk so far and look forward to getting to interact with you in the future :D
I've posted! Hopefully my first post is good and I didn't mess anything up. Let me know if anything needs to be changed or I messed up any details or anything like that.
