It was a relief to see him alive, even if he was in a hospital bed. No one would tell her what happened or any information of the situation at hand. Maybe there was some rule about not stressing out the council members or some other bull that she was supposed to be led to believe. Of course, as someone who’s lived on their own for so long and had fought to keep herself alive for just as long, she knew better than to think everything would be alright and they just played tag together.

“Oh Quill…” She said, her voice filled with a bunch of sadness and concern as she walked over to his bedside and got down on her knees next to him so they were level together. It’s funny how they switched, she was the one in the hospital bed first and now it was his turn. “You know, this going back and forth of me being on a medical bed and now you, let’s not do this again.” She said softly with a hint of joking in her voice.

Her hand reached down and gently took his within hers. Her heart was pounding with nervousness and worry as she brought his hand gently up to her face and placed a gentle kiss on his palm. “I’m glad you’re okay…” She spoke softly to him, a gentle smile curving her full lips into a tender smile. “I’m sorry you got drug into this… It’s all my fault and I wish I could make it up to you…” Her head dropped slightly looking down at the white linens of the bed. A small sigh left her as she looked back up at him, her brown eyes filled with sadness and sorrow about seeing him in so much pain because of her. “I’m so sorry…” She whispered to him.
There was a small moment between her lips pressing against Peter’s and Peter leaning into the kiss that Lexi feared he would pull back from everything out of depression. If he couldn’t get passed this now, he would never get passed it. But after feeling his hands on her hips and his lips pressing more firmly against his, she relaxed knowing that everything would be okay.

Pulling back from the kiss, she gave him a gentle smile in response to his comments. Her hands played gently with his hair. “Good.” She said with a nod. After a moment of looking gently into Peter’s eyes she stepped back and took his hand. “Come on, now that that’s over with. It’s probably a good idea that we join Matt and Aunt May downstairs. He made it clear to me on the way over that the topic involved both of you.”

Matt was sitting across from May and looked as though he had just finished speaking. Leaning back in the chair he was playing with his cane as he heard the footsteps coming down the stairs. Something that was rather light weight which was surprising and a heavier footed young man. Both hearts were raising, stress was relieved and replaced by a sense of urgency. “Good of you two to join us.”

“Peter…” May said looking up at her nephew with disbelief in her eyes before looking back at Matt.

“Please sit down,” Matt said gesturing towards the couch before beginning to speak, “I’ll keep this brief. In the law world, there is a rule to not get involved in cases you have a personal connection with. So that being said, I have come to help with a case that involves you and your lovely aunt here… The cookies were great by the way… It’s speaking in regards to the man killed Ben. He’s been caught.” Matt tossed his cane up gently and caught it. “This guy’s a real character and has killed more than just Ben. But the problem with this guy is he always seems to be able to get away with it. But this time, now that he was caught… and the fact that I’m here, he won’t get away with it this time. But it will require help from both of you…” With that he caught his cane a final time and leaned forward, his hands wrapped along the top and his empty eyes staring in the direction of the throbbing heart of Peter Parker. “Tell me Peter, are you up for the challenge?”
Marian’s blue eyes rolled up to see Robert walking into her office holding a cup of coffee and a small bag. She gave him a confused looked as he held out the products and walked inside. Oh, oh that makes sense. Her confused look turned into a grateful smile as he placed the things down onto her desk. At his response to seeing her email to guy, she laughed softly. “He made mention to wanting to try some places around New York for lunch. Who better to show him around then me? Someone who will pretty much eat anything!” She gave a small laugh as he turned around, she tilted her head to one side and couldn’t help but ask, “Do I hear a hint of jealousy in your voice Locksley? The lack of a ‘not date’ getting to you?” Her voice was completely teasing and her tongue-in-cheek attitude to show she was just kidding.

When asked about if she was going to be the stenographer for his case she gave a small shrug. “I might, I might not be. I guess we’ll have to wait and see.” She said playfully as she picked up the coffee and brought it to her lips. “Assuming you have changed like you said, it might be enjoyable for me to do my job while you work instead of how it used to be.” It would take her a long time to accept the fact that she was going to have to work on Robert’s case but she’d muscle through her dislike of him and just type away, ignoring his actions and not really retaining any of his comments. But hey, if he’s changed then maybe she could handle it.

The eleven o’clock trail was about to begin and Marian took her seat on the Judge’s left and popped her fingers, ready to document the whole conversation and put on her ‘game face’ to show no emotion to what was said; and that, my dear friends, is the hardest part of her job.
“No.”, “Yes.”, “No.”, “Yes…” Nikki slammed a fist down on the table. “You have got to be kidding me. That’s your most ‘important manner?!”

“It is important Princess. It’s to keep you safe and secure.”, “No that is forcing me to stay here. I know the law I’m not foolish…” She turned to one of the head elders, a large short plump purple alien with pointed ears and squirrel cheeks. “No offense.” Her statement was quick and she ignored the disapproval from the alien before looking back at Advicus. “To do what you’re proposing is against my will and I shall not be a part of it.”

“If you know the law Princess then you know that…”, “Yes I know. But I also know it’s my choice.”, “You have less than a day to make that choice or the choice will be made for you.” Nikki opened her mouth to respond before Advicus continued, “I become your legal guardian after your parents died and no one else can represent your planet. This arrangement is in your best interest and in ours. I will, however, give you 12 hours to find someone else. After that you will agree to our arrangement and we will move onto more important things at hand.”

“More important things…” Nikki began to argue with Advicus before an alarm went off in the building. “What is that?” The council rose up slowly from their seats looking annoyed. “Excuse me why aren’t we worried about the sound?”

“People are about to throw a fuss about you being here. We are prepared for such a situation. Follow me.” Advicus gestured in an opposite direction the council was going. He and her walked down the hallway before getting to a balcony. Nikki stepped out behind him before raising her small caramel colored hand up to block the sun from her eyes as they adjusted to the sun. Her gaze moved to the ground to see the Guardians were still there and Nova Prime and taken off into the air. Before she could wave at them, Nova was level with the balcony. “Nova, please keep the party crashers at bay…”

“Attention high council.” A voice said as a few ships showed up, each with their own interesting design housing about five people in each of the three ships. “This is a warning. If you make the last Metra a member of the high council, you will regret it.” The voice was sinister but almost laughing at itself. “It’s not as wise of a decision as you’d think. And we’re going to demonstrate why.” The bottoms of the ship opened and people began to fall out and land upon the grounds of the streets. Blades and weapons drawn and heading towards the Guardians. “Even the Guardians don’t stand a chance.”

“Nova, change of plans; escort the princess to the safe house until further notice.”, “Yes sir…”, “Oh hell no, I’m not leaving them to get their asses kicked! That’s a lot of people!!” She said with a surprise before the Nova plucked her from the balcony and into his arms. “Rick let me go at once. I will fight with them, they don’t deserve this!”, “They’ll be fine.” He said in soft tone as he wrapped his arms around her and began to fly again, taking her away from the scene. Her hand was reached out back to them, indicating she didn’t want to go. If they were to be fighting because of her, she wanted to be there with them.

    ---

The safe house was filled with the high council and the council members that were present in the building. They all seemed to gasp at the arrival of the Metra, the ones that were not members of the high council because they didn’t know she was even there and the high council members because of her reaction when she was sat down. “Take me back there! Right now!”

“I’ve been requested to keep you in safety here at the safe house until further notice.”

“Don’t pretend like regulations are at stack here, it’s those people’s lives. That’s a lot of people going after them! Let me help, take me back right now!!”, “I can’t do that princess, this is where you’ll be safe.”, “But they aren’t safe!”, “I’m sorry Princess but I have my orders to follow.” With that Nikki stormed inside the safe house and slammed the door shut behind her.

    ---

The next hour consisted of her forcing herself to talk to people. The aliens from all over were nice and welcoming, and as much as she didn’t want to admit it, she felt relaxed like no one was going to attack her. But that didn’t excuse the nagging feeling she had about the guardians. It took the hour before they were allowed to return to the building. Of course, most of everything was cleaned up and everyone was gone but that didn’t stop Nikki. “What happened? Where are the guardians? Are they okay?” Questions flew out of her a million miles an hour before she finally got any responses.

“They are alright,” One of the guards began to explain. “Beaten up but they are alright. No one’s badly injured but they’re at the hospital getting patched up.” Another guard chimed in, “You know, I didn’t expect them to fight as well as they do, it was rather impressive.” Rick made some noise behind her and she shot him a dirty look before looking back at the guards. “Well they’re pretty impressive and rather nice people when you get to know them. Now.” She reached forward, grabbing one of them by the collar of their shirt and yanked him towards her. “Tell me where the guardians are.” Her voice was so deep and threatening that the guard shook in his boots. “Okay okay I’ll tell you!!”

Nikki arrived as swiftly to the nearby hospital and nearly blew the doors open as she hurried inside. Arriving at the counter the women behind it scared at her in shock. Obviously they had heard of the last Metra being on the planet but they didn’t expect her to come running in dressed in a nice dress, heels and her hair up. Nor were they counting on her asking for the Guardians. She was pointed down a hallway and given a room number, in her hand was a crumpled up piece of paper and she was dripping with sweat like she was running from someone.

In her rush down the hall she saw into a few of the rooms. Drax was grinning away looking down at the scars covering his body, saying something about a ‘new battle’, Gamora was making faces as she was getting stitched up on her arm, aside from that she looked alright. And Groot and Rocket were sitting on one of the beds talking to a beautiful nurse who seemed to be giggling at the things that Rocket was saying while Groot swayed back and forth to the music. Reaching the door labeled Peter Quill, Nikki checked his chart, a few cuts and bruises but he was okay. Nikki knocked lightly on the door and heard something from inside. “Quill?” She questioned softly as she opened the door and stepped inside. A large sigh of relief left her as she finally saw him. “Oh thank god you’re okay!"
From the look on Peter’s face she couldn’t tell who hurt more. Her and her cheek and feelings or Peter and the knowledge of what he did. When he stepped forward towards her she didn’t move, not wanting to show that there was a possibility of her being afraid of him or worried he would harm her. She watched him put his hand up and a gentle smile curled the corners of her full lips as she pulled herself from the door and stepped forward to him.

Her hands slowly trailed up his chest, feeling him in seat clothes that were much more of his ‘style’ (style? Sure we’ll go with that), his hair was crazy and messy and he seemed like his old self again. His eyes even seemed more Peter-like but instead of the upbeat, happy, playful, goofy and full of science talk; they were filled with sorrow and sadness, depression from what he had done. Hands slowly gliding up his chest and onto his shoulders she leaned herself against him and wrapped her fingers into his hair. “You won’t, I know you won’t.” With that she pressed her lips gently against his.
Lexi’s blue gaze shot up hearing him comment about her apologizing. He had a point that he had done a lot more to hurt her then she did to him but… well she used something she knew hurt him in order to trigger a response. She knew what things to say and how to say them in order to get Peter mad and she did it. And… he hit her, but she asked for it in a sense. Literally and it pulled him from whatever he was fighting with.

Upon his mention of when they first started to date, her lips curled into a knowing smile and she turned her gaze back down to the floor, her small body leaning up against his door and the toe of her shoe traced along the carpet of his bedroom, drawing random shapes as she listened.

“If anything like that happened again…” She repeated, her gaze shooting up at him, “I will fight back and we’ll both end up battered, bruised and most likely bleeding. I knew the real Peter wouldn’t hit me; violence towards someone you care about is what was needed in order to pull you from… wherever you had gone. So believe me when I say this, I will not hold back and it will be quite a battle for the ages.” She said with a nod. Peter may be a nice guy but if he ever got intentionally physical with her (not being controlled by some crazy glop of black-stuff) she wouldn’t hold back and she would make him look and feel as bad as her. He had strength but she had a quickness and a wiggliness about her that would work towards her advantage.

“I’m not mad you hit me. I’m mad about something else.” Lexi’s head gave a firm nod before she continued. “If you recall; when we first started dating, one of the things you told me was that you were excited about not having any secrets between us. The stuff on you, the thing that wrapped itself around your judgment and nearly your mind; you had to have known before. And you didn’t tell me. Not one word; even when I asked you about it. Nothing…” Again she gave another firm nod. “That’s what I’m mad about. More secrets…”

Shaking her head she looked down at the ground. “Well that and…” She gave a small chuckle fighting back some tears, “It seems rather opposite compared to that but I have had a lot of girls in the last few weeks whispering around me about how flirtatious you had become towards…” Her eyes flicked up at him, “them and other girls around the school.”

She leaned her head back against the wall watching him closely. “So, two things decide how I walk out of here Peter, and it’s your call. One is whether you want me to be your girlfriend or not. Because if you’re going to flirt with other girls then there’s no point at us being together if you think the grass is greener on the other side. And two; if you still want me as your girlfriend, the secrets, the lies, they have to stop. And they have to stop now.” Her weight shifted slightly from one foot to the other before she continued, “No matter how you choose to take this, I hope we can still be friends afterwards.” Yes the decision was up to him, she wanted to be together but it all weighed on his shoulders now.
When he said ‘welcome to the Merry Men’ she couldn’t help but smirk slightly in victory. She finally got what she wanted and what’s even more humorous is that her father gave up his chance to have her on his crew and now the ‘enemy’ was the one she was going to work for. Her grin moved through her as her attention turned to the ‘old man’ getting up. She nodded gently to him before sitting back with a smile watching him walk away with a gentle wave to him. So she had mission, and her mission was to get to know Guy Gibson a little better… huh, that doesn’t exactly seem like a bad mission.

The following work day brought a new pep in Marian’s step. She had Robin Hood’s number and was now a Merry Men! How many people could say that?! Well… she wasn’t sure of the exact count but hey, there was at least one! She moved her way through the crowded streets and up the courthouse steps.

“Good morning.” She said with a cheery voice to the secretary who seemed to wave at her in a slight confusion as the blonde nearly skipped into her office. This was an interesting morning and should lead to an interesting day; draping her small jacket over the back of her chair, she sat down at her desk and opened her emails. Upon finding none new or important in her inbox before opening a new email; she began to write out a message to see if Guy would like to join her for lunch this afternoon. Much to her surprise, he responded rather swiftly and proceeded to take her up on the invite. Smiling, she sat back in her chair, her hands placed gently upon the arm rests of the chair and rocked gently back and forth. Today… today was going to be a good day.
“I don’t know if he’s good enough for you.”, “You haven’t even met him yet.”, “So? That doesn’t matter, no one’s ever going to be good enough for my God-Daughter.’, “You’re being dramatic.”, “Oh! Lexi that hurts, right in the heart.”, “Now you’re really being dramatic…”, “Oh my heart…”, “Stop.”, “Oh… oh…”, “Stop.”, “The pain….” Lexi rolled her eyes rather dramatically as the door opened and Matt was standing there holding his heart with his free hand before pulling it back down and placing it upon his walking stick and giving Aunt May a smile.

“Oh I fell, nothing to worry about.” Lexi said with a head shake, her blue eyes shot up to see Peter nearly falling down the stairs before looking back at Aunt May. “This is Matt Murdock, he’s a family friend and he said he has something he wants to talk to you two about.”

A nod left Matt as a smile moved across his fine lips showing his straight white teeth. “I hope we’re not coming at an inconvenient time.”

“No.” Aunt May said with a smile, “Please come in, have a seat; I’m May.” She said stepping aside allowing the two to enter.

Matt walked in and turned, looking directly at Peter without even seeing him. “And you must be Peter. Lexi’s told me about you.” His eyebrow quirked up slightly only to be followed by an ‘oooph’ sound as Lexi gave him a small smack to the back; he looked towards her and lowered his eyebrow before venturing inside with a gentle tap of his cane before finding a seat and sitting down. “I’m sure you’re as beautiful as you sound May but my eyes don’t see as well as they used to.” He always found humor in his situation because he was one of those people. “Please sit down and we’ll talk. But I believe…” He pulled his hand from the ground and pointed to Lexi, “Lexi and Peter need to have a little chat before they join us.” He nodded before lowering the walking stick back onto the floor and looked in May’s direction. “We’ll fill them in when they get done.”

Matt was both a blessing and an annoyance when it came to certain things but she nodded at his statement. He’s got a point, and she needed to talk to Peter. Gesturing slightly she started up the stairs passed him and down the hall t his room. Once inside she waited for him to enter behind her and shut the door. She kept her distance though, not being she was scared of him but she wasn’t sure exactly how this was going to end.

“I’m…” She began, taking in a deep breath. Her voice was shaky and sounded extremely sad, “I’m sorry that everything came out the way it did. I know you’re going through a lot and if you… need your space, I understand and I’ll leave you alone but; I hope we can be okay. I know that… it wasn’t you. I’ve seen…” Her pauses were caused by sniffles of sadness and worry. “it happen to others. That, stuff. Harry… pour Harry went just crazy with that stuff and you… you were on the brink of falling down that hill. I had to do something and I’m sorry I pushed you that far but… I didn’t have a choice. I hope you can understand that.” Her gaze was on the floor, she had trouble looking at him. After everything that had happened, they were on the rocks like some couples get but; no one can really relate to super humans fighting.
Everything’s complicated. ‘Complicated’ was a word that Marian couldn’t stand. Her father used that as an excuse a lot in order to get her to avoid topics he didn’t want to talk about. Especially when it came to her joining the force; ‘You can’t join it’s complicated.’, ‘We’ll talk about it later but it’s rather complicated.’, ‘This case is too complicated to talk about.’ Everything was ‘complicated’ but could be easily fixed if someone who just take the time to explain. The plain truth is, people just don’t want to tell her things for this or that reason, and that was something she didn’t enjoy… at all.

Robin did pose an interesting question. Was he a criminal or was he a saint? Was he what the tabloids made him out to be or was he something outlandish and dangerous? Was he an angel or a demon? Her hand reached up, her soft palm resting gently against his far cheek as she turned his head to look at her. Leaning in to close the gap almost forehead to forehead, she spoke softly. “You are a man doing what is needed in society to right the wrongs of the rich and helping the poor. Justice is served more ways than one and this is something that is needed at this point. Am I willing to take that gamble? If it’s to better the lives of people then yes, and hopefully, through your actions; the rest will realize what they are doing is wrong and follow suite to treat others better.” A small smirk curled her full lips, “Besides, you can’t be all bad; you lent a freezing girl your jacket, which I will return to you by the way, when other people wouldn’t even lift a finger. Gentleman actions from someone who isn’t supposed to be a gentleman just shows how wrong society is.” She slowly dropped her hand from his face, her fingertips dancing along his cheek before falling off.

Her smirked curled into a smile as she pulled herself back upright and turned to look straight ahead leaning back against the bench once again. “So yes, I am willing to gamble on that. The real question is, will I get a seat at the table to play?”
The boys’ treatments towards each other was rather interesting throughout the ride back to Xandar. Getting up from the table she’d hear that other people were going to get up but the only one who would end up following suite with her would be Rocket. Interesting… on occasion she’d try to talk to Rick only to have him rushing away from her spanking his butt and hopping down the hallway. Other times she’d go to ask Peter a question only to have him run past her down the hall without breathing a word. To say the least it was a weird experience but she was grateful to have Rocket and Gamora to talk to.

Arriving on Xandar, Nikki stayed in between the Nova Prime and the Guardians but walked by herself. Her head was held high and she seemed to present herself in a different fashion then she did on the ship. Standing upright and tall, she held herself with a pose and grace one rarely sees; even her movements became smoother and more graceful, like when she was fighting or using her levitation skills except she was doing it with such poise that it became apparent that she was raised this way.

The seven leaders of the High Council stood at the entrance to the massive building that housed all the regulations and meetings. The elder of the group stepped forward, “Nova Prime, well done.” All the Nova did was nod and step to the side so that Nikki was now visible to the elder. “Princess Nikki Ivy, an honor.” The man said with a bow before speaking, “I am…”

“Lord Advicus Erebus, yes I know. My father spoke of you many times upon his return to our home planet saying that you were quite good at finding the balance in all the debates that were held within the council.” She said in an almost instant interruption but in a nice and respectable tone.

“So my fame precedes me…” He said with a small chuckle pulling himself up from the bow with a nod. “Your father was a great man and your mother was quite a gem. It’s an honor to have you here.”

“As you may be able to guess, I wasn’t exactly intending on coming by my own accord. Did you have something you wish to discuss or shall I be on my way?” She asked with a head tilt watching him closely.

“It has been known that someone in the universe has put a bounty out for you. The safest place would be for you to be under our protection…” Nikki shifted slightly in her stance showing some disapproval of the statement but Advicus continued on without much acknowledgement to her actions. “In addition to that, your father’s seat needs to be filled by someone of stature as a measure of balance of the council. We wish to have you take his place.”

“This seems to be a conversation I’d rather have in a more private location for I have some objections to the arrangements presented. Can we venture inside?” She said with a gesture.

A nod left the elder as he turned his gaze to the Guardians, “Your service for the princess is no longer required; you may leave.”

“Actually;” She said with some form of authority to her voice. “Seeing as you say they were in my service. They deserve payment. On more than one occasion they have saved my life. Instead of me working off my debt you have summoned and escorted me here; therefor my debt shall be repaid by you.” Her finger pointing to Advicus as she walked passed him with a small wave of her hand. “I expect to hear all their requests for supplies, food, money and shelter are met by the time they wish to depart. If I’m as valuable as you seem to make me, their time is surely worth their work.” With that she entered inside the building, head held high and authority placed firm. She expected the guardians to be paid for their time and a small glance over her shoulder shot Quill a pleading face, ‘please stay’ was all it said in the brief moment before turning forward and walking inside the long hallway.

    ---------------------

The council elders set around a table, Nikki standing at the edge of it as they spoke. “Her demands are not unreasonable.” One said. “But at the same time she wouldn’t be protected.” Another stated. “If she comes back for meetings it’s as if she lived somewhere else as everyone else does.” A third responded. “But she can’t be protected if she’s gone away; the safest location is for her to be here.” A fourth spoke up.

Nikki shifted slightly where she stood. Her outfit had changed, their insistence on her being unarmed left her feeling a bit empty but she couldn’t deny the comfort of her clothing. The black floor length dress with the train fit her nicely and her blue hair was pulled up into a high pony tail with sparkles in it. Her foot tapped lightly against the floor, unhappy with the fact that she was being completely ignored instead of included in the conversation. The council itself was made up of nearly 300 different species of aliens and they all worked to keep peace within the galaxy. The elders were nominated by the council members and the head elder elected from the elders. Advicus sat at the head of the table, taking in the idea of everything that was being presented; his four purple fingers tapped together as he listened closely. He was a wise man, nearly 150 years old and had been the elder for 100 of them. He was known to be wise, kind, understanding and will to work with anyone to make something right. “Please understand everyone; our fear resides on the Princess’s safety. That needs to be our top priority.”

“I appreciate that Elder Advicus,” Nikki said quickly before placing her hands on the table, “but none of you gave two shits about my planet when we were attacked; we sent for help but you wanted to remain natural. You had four years to find me and I personally dropped people off here at Xandar and now you suddenly care. Why is my safety suddenly a priority?”

“I have no explanation about how any of that happened.” Advicus said with a sigh sitting back in his chair with sad eyes. “Had I been the one to get the request we would have come but somehow it got overlooked. That’s no excuse I know, all I can do now is apologize and over you this safe haven.”

“And if I refuse said ‘safe haven’?” She questioned standing back upright and crossing her tan arms under her chest.

“There’s not many ways around this Princess Nikki, please be aware that this is for the best and you really need to stay. You are safe here; no one can touch you and no one will get to you. Now… we have other matters to discuss. Those of importance in relation to your staying…” Oh, this did not sound good…
