Confusion moved across his face when she announced that there was a second on magical ability. He placed his hand on his paperwork and under cover of leaning over the table to try and see what she was referring to, he hid the words on his application before shaking his head. “Sorry, I can’t read it like that.” After gesturing to take the paper, he took it and compared it to his. Sure enough they gave her the one referencing magic, the idiots. “I see… Medical.” He said placing his paper down in front of her and used the same trick, pointing out the section he had change from Magical to Medical and laid his hand on her paper, changing her wording as well.

“See, medical. I think we’re rating out confidence.” He said with a nod as he handed her back her paper and compared the two to show they both said Medical.

“Cosplay on the brain Kiera?” Alex responded with a chuckle as he sat down against the chair with a laugh. “Maybe we’ll play some video games when we get home. You’re lacking magical exposure so you’re seeing the word ‘Magic’ everywhere. As for the ears thing, she probably doesn’t like Cosplayers in costume regularly but I’ve got special permission so she’ll have to deal with it. Ha ha!” Hopefully she bought it and not wanting to get any more onto the subject, he returned to his paperwork humming a happy tune along the way.
The scene before her played out like nothing she had ever witnessed before. The way he talked was so open and honest with no barriers up. However everything that he said held a realm of sadness to it. A sadness that someone with loss could only experience and her heart ached from the mere sight of the whole situation. He spoke of many things, things that she wanted and didn’t want to hear and as he disappeared, she took a moment to herself to process what had happened.

Picking a nearby flower from the bundle, she approached the grave. She had heard of Rin but didn’t know much about her. Taking in a deep sigh she squatted down in front of the stone. “Hello Ms. Rin, my name is Airi Mae and I’m… I’m a friend of Kakashi’s. I… I understand that life isn’t easy on him, especially right now as he’s going through a lot but… please help him keep his hope. He has more to live for then he’s realizing and he needs to see that. He’s got his team, who are going to become his family soon enough and… well I don’t know where I weigh into all of this but I’d like him to be around he… he means… he means a lot to me.” She gently placed the flower on Rin’s grave laying opposite of Kakashi’s so they created an X. “Please protect him when I’m not around, he doesn’t deserve to die next.”

    At that, she left.

Airi was preparing for the arrival of her new friend but had a sneaking suspicion he might be late or on a mission she wasn’t aware of. Besides it wasn’t like he had to report to her, she wasn’t his mother or his teacher… His sensei…

Her thoughts drifted back to less than a day ago, seeing Kakashi so… so off his guard and so relaxed but sad really stuck with her. She wanted to talk to him and it took every ounce of her being last night not to run to him and hug him. Reminding him everything would be okay would alright and that he wasn’t alone. Not only was he not alone but there were others, plenty of others that cared about him. He was just… a little blind to it.

The sight of her in her backyard was something not many people got to see. She was in very plain clothes they looked like they had seen better days, her hair was messy and up in a bun. In her hands was a basket filled with gardening supplies and tools to make the job easier, along with a two smaller buckets that can be used to discard weeds.

“Sorry I’m late!!” Naruto came sliding around the corner due to his speed as he nearly fell over as he attempted to put the brakes on.

A laugh left Airi as he pulled to a stop in front of her and she handed him a pad for his knees. “It happens, don’t worry about it. I thought maybe you had gone on a mission and didn’t have time to let me know but I’m glad you’re here.” Her honest statement and pleasant smile was returned by one of his.

The conversations were light and cheerful until Airi decided to take advantage of the moment. “You know.” She began as she cut off one of the cucumbers and placed it in the basket. “Kakashi covered a lot of things with you the day I came to watch your training. But there’s a few things he didn’t cover that I think you should know.” This caused Naturo’s attention to turn to her but she continued her own work as she spoke.

“One is that a ninja is nothing without a sense of purpose. It is highly important that you fight for something. It could as simple as protecting the village to fighting for someone you care about to fighting to protect yourself. A since of purpose is the true motivation to go on.”

“Number two; life is nothing without hope. Hope is the one thing that never dies. Hope is what drives the world to succeed, as a hope for a better future, a hope for life, a hope for love, a hope for help; any sort of hope will make anything better and provide you with more motivation to continue onward. Hope is that one thing people hang onto until the very end and you should never lose it, ever.”

“And third, never think that you’re not important.”

“I know I’m important! I’m going to be the next Hokage!” Naruto stated excitedly.

A heartfelt laugh left Airi as she tussled the hair of the young Genin, “Yes you are important and I’m sure you’ll be Hokage someday. But if you ever get to the point that you think you’re not important or you’re worthless or you just can’t carry on because no one believes in you. Remember that I believe in you, just like I believe in all the ninja in this village.”

    “Like you believe in Kakashi-Sensei?”

“Maybe not like that with everyone but yes, I believe in Kakashi as well.”

“What kind of belief do you have with Kakashi-Sensei if it’s not like everyone else?” The blonde asked, his face pressed together in confusion which became even more noticable as her face turned red.

“That’s… way more complicated then I can go into detail about right now. Besides we’re all done and the sun’s going down. Here.” She handed him the basket which was filled with half their haul for the day.

“WOW THANKS!” He squealed with joy as he took the basket.

After saying their good byes, she watched him hurry off to make a meal of his own as her hand went to her stomach which growled loudly in protest to the lack of food from her busy day of work. “Alright, put stuff in the house than off to get food. Now just to load the bas…” SHIT! She gave the basket to Naruto to stop him from asking any more questions about Kakashi and now she was going to have to make multiple trips into her house. Sighing softly she rose her feet and collected the first few things she would carry in into her arms.
    Cool, and HAPPY NEW YEAR!
It didn’t take long before Airi’s stomach pulled her towards a local tavern where she found herself poking at her food. Today wasn’t the best of days. She did get to see her sister, made a new little blonde haired friend and got her roof re-done but…

Her thoughts moved back to Kakashi, he was kind enough to give her an out and away from the conversation by asking her if there was anything else he needed before they left but this was not the way she wanted to tell him about her engagement. In fact, she’d rather not have to address the topic at all but… that was a long lost feeble dream of a mad woman. He knew now and there was no erasing that information. A small sigh left her as she picked up the last bit of her meal and popped it into her mouth. There was always a chance he didn’t hear it… no, even that’s a false hope. It’s safer to think Kakashi knows something even if he doesn’t because…well he’ll find out sooner or later.

Something inside of her said she had to talk to him about it but… what was there to be said? ‘Hey sorry I didn’t tell you I’m engaged to your ninja rival. But you know now, want some cake?’ Sure… Her small hands wrapped into her blonde hair as she gave it a small pull of stress. What was wrong with her!? Why was it stressing her out to possibly talk with him? Just talk! Uuuggghhh!!!

Rising from her seat she left her payment on the table and disappeared into the bathroom. About ten minutes later she came out to catch a glimpse of the last person she expected to see, exiting the bar with food in his hand. Before he mind could argue with her body, she instantly followed him, hurrying to keep him with his less than normal speed. He had food with him and seemed to be heading in an off direction.

Where is he going? She mused to herself as she took cover behind a nearby tree when he finally arrived to the destination and what she saw as she spied behind the tree left her in complete surprise.
Yeah… everything was going fine until something sharp hit her ear. “Ow…” She muttered as her eyes slowly flickered open. And… to her surprise…

“WHAT THE HELL?!” She sprang from the bed, flying off and back until she hit the wall clutching the blanket to her body. In her sleepy panic she stared at him with wide eyes, obviously getting the wrong idea real fast that he was the issue. Damnit, it wasn’t him… “Sorry,” Her response was quick as she got to her feet and grabbed her belongings before hurrying into the bathroom.

After doing a quick change into her daily clothes she checked her things. Okay so everything was still there; her eyebrows pressed together in surprise, she had expected something to be missing but… there wasn’t anything gone, in fact it was just as she left it the night before. Interesting….

Pulling open the bathroom door she gave an embarrassed smile. “Sorry about that…” With that she walked to the front door and pulled it open. “Shall we get some coffee before we leave?”
I’m going to have to ride a horse… Melanie’s stomach turned at the idea as she fiddled with her helmet. This was a scary idea but at least she had a… friend? with her to help her through it. Dalton’s words that matched King Gabriel’s made her heart tighten, he really did care. She wasn’t his birth child and she was chosen for… some reason but he seemed to support her and want the best for her. What a kind man!

    Shank

The helmet slid onto her head as he pushed it on and buckled the strap into place. All Melanie could do was stare up at him with wide eyes, he was… really going to make her do this. “Always where your helmet… but…” She opened her mouth to protest, in a sad attempt to prolong the enablable. Instead he fired back at her with a playful smirk and a statement that he didn’t need one. A look of playful disapproval moved across her face as she pushed her brows together and gave him a very poor attempted at a grumpy look… which was quickly overshadowed by the fact that she was nearly laughing at him.

Wow he was being playful! Maybe she could actually call him her friend soon, especially since he’s lightened up more. Maybe the more time they spend together the more he will be able to open up to her. She loved talking to people; there was no doubt about that and to have someone so ‘close to home’ to joke and laugh with would make this whole transition much more relaxing for her.

Until… he brought over the horse. Any point of her that he relaxed instantly tensed up as the 15 hand horse was brought face to… nose with her. Her breathing halted in her chest and her eyes went wide as if she was ready to turn tail and run as fast as she could the other direction. But Dalton was too quick as he grabbed her hand and put it on the mare’s nose.

“Oh…” Her voice was filled with surprise as she touched the soft nose of the nuzzling mare. A small smile moved across her full lips as she continued the gentle stroking motion that he had begun for her. The horse was soft and seemed rather gentle but it was still something much larger than her and… well that was a bit scary. But… it wasn’t that bad.

“Name her?” She questioned as her brow pushed together in thought. For her, it was the first decision she would ever make as a princess and… something about that was a bit stressful, even thought she was just naming an animal. “Uh… Um…” She continued to pet the horse as she attempted to find an answer and after a moment she finally spoke, a gentle smile moved across her face as she came to the decision. “Ellie. Ellie was the name of my dog that saved me from my house burning down. So if I’m going to have this horse as mine and I shouldn’t be scared of her, I’d like to think of her as someone I can rely on.”

Ellie seemed to agree with the name as she let out another whinny and nuzzled more into her hand. Then… Dalton said lesson three and her eyes expanded and shot to him. “What?” She questioned, a squeak of stress to her voice, “On… the horse?” More squeaks and even more nervousness went across her face as she realized that yes this is part of riding the horse.

Despite her fear, or maybe he chose to ignore it, the lesson continued with knowledge about the saddle and how to climb up onto the horse. “Oh god, I hope I never had to do that in a dress…” She muttered to herself as she watched him gracefully climb on. She knew she would be anything but graceful as she did so and… well she was right. After flopping like a dead fish onto the back of the horse, she made it on and upright and even facing the right way! It only took seven tries but she did it!

“Okay…” She breathed to herself as she took in her new scenery. “Oh goodness I’m up high…” Her heart pounded in her chest as she reached down and took up the reins as Dalton had so politely demonstrated. Her focus was on her posture and how she held the rains… that was until something bothered Ellie’s ear and the horse shook its head to chase away the bother.

Panic filled Melanie and she dropped the rains, leaned forward and wrapped her arms around the horse’s neck. “No Ellie it’s okay!” She said in an attempt to calm the… well calm horse. There was no doubt that Melanie was afraid but her first thought was… “Are you okay? Are you alright? What happened?”

The horse didn’t respond… because it can’t talk. But it did whinny softly and snort lightly as if… laughing at her. “….” Melanie opened her eyes to realize exactly what she had done and… Dalton was right there holding the lead to the unmoving horse. Her cheeks turned red as she quickly and awkwardly sat upright and retrieved the rains. With a flush face and completely embarrassed at her reaction she straightened her posture and composed herself… to some degree. She was a princess now and needed to act as such…

    This happened 3 more times.

After straightening herself up for the third time she was practically shaking. “Dalton I need a break…” She said in a small whimper, “… Um…” Her body shifted as she attempted to get down only to find herself more nervous about the height. “How… we didn’t go over the getting down part...”
