WARNING: McLENDON'S SYNDROME
McLendon's Syndrome is a blood-born contagious disease, avoid contact with open sores, cuts or wounds. When treating, wear protective gear and double-glove.

Do NOT provide their blood to an uninfected person. Quarantine all blood samples. Quarantine and sterilize room following treatment.

Initial presentation - headache, fever, pain in the muscles and joints, unconsciousness that lasts several days, excessive sweating, early onset light sensitivity, eye color turns red. Blood circulation without heart beat. Presence of McLendon's microorganism detected in blood.

Symptoms include:

Blood cravings - can accept any blood-type. Cravings can be moderated by chocolate.
Paralytic Saliva - acts as a mild sedative, applied during bite. High risk of blood contact.
Extreme sun sensitivity - Exposed skin will experience almost instant painful burning and blistering, death can result from prolonged sun exposure. Recommend no travel during daylight hours.
Extreme food sensitivity - painful vomiting, cramps, and dumping reported. Patients require special dietary supplement, MLS2 (liquid). Survival ration (paste) works as a viable alternative.
Sensory sensitivity - everything seems brighter, louder, overwhelming taste, smell, or touch. May require wearing of sunglasses, gloves, special ear plugs to filter sound, and a blander diet.
Enhanced strength - strength appears to double or triple, as if they are able to use a greater percentages of their muscles' capabilities. Please use caution around the newly infected.
Enhanced reflexes - Sometimes too quick, can result in damaging equipment / collateral damage to the people around them. Avoid thrown objects whenever possible.

Treatment - There is no cure, attempts to remove the symbiote invariably kills the patient. Provide symptom relief as listed above.

Shatterproof plastic glasses with built-in heads-up Augmented Reality display, allows for gesture commands. Can also act as a targeting sight and display heat signatures, using the built-in cameras. Can connect to a smart comm or other devices as a dedicated display, or to local communications networks - typically a fee service. Popular for those without implants. Uses a commercial charging pad.

Body Suit: Kingman's Bioplastic Ulster

A programmable self-sealing living membrane undersuit that feeds off the wearer's body heat and secretions. In the event of a sudden decompression, the body suit expands at openings to cover exposed flesh (typically the hand and head), providing protection from the vacuum of space and fifteen minutes of oxygen. Standard oxygen canisters can be attached to extend breathing time. Suits come packaged in a large plastic egg with a battery base. If suit is not going to be worn for a long time, it should be plugged into a battery.

Sensor: Seares Chem Sniffer

this palm-size rod when waved over an object can pick up the chemicals being outgassed by the material, often used by travelers to detect hazardous or poisonous food and displaying a green or red indicator light. When connected to a smart comm device with its database, it can do a basic chemical signature breakdown, allowing it to identify hazardous chemicals, poisons, alcohol strength, Scoville heat units, calorie count, or explosives.

I should state this up front - there is no cure for McLendon's Syndrome.
No one should suddenly produce a miracle cure for McLendon's Syndrome.

One cannot pop her into a Chrysalis Machine to remove the symbiote at the heart of McLendon's Syndrome. It is integrated into her body.

It's rare-enough disease that few are aware of it, unless they're a hypochondriac or a medical professional with a knowledge of exotic diseases. A medical warning is included in her IDENTchip implant.

Occasionally McLendon's Syndrome patients run into crazy would-be vampire killer zealots with wooden stakes who've seen too many horror movies.

Depending on your game, we could just have her raiding blood banks for blood. The ocassional pet or jogger....

Background:

Backstory: Billie was left wrapped in a towel inside a box on the steps of the Crater Street Orphanage, all they found on her was an old military medal being used to pin an stained envelope to her blanket, but instead of a note, the director found inside a recipe card for Karsk, a coffee and moonshine drink. The director found it enjoyable, except for the faint blurriness it caused her vision.

The police started an investigation, but her footprint was not on file, nor was there any recent births for a child with a cross-shaped birthmark on her left hip. Police eventually gave up, deciding she hadn't had her birth recorded so it was going to be near impossible to find her parents.

She was ten when she accidently witnessed an assassination. The assassin had shot from the roof next door to the orphanage, line of sight for the jail three blocks away, then froze when he saw her watching him packing up his gear hurriedly. He raised his laser, then heard the sirens and fled. She tried telling the other kids, but they didn't believe her.

Three weeks later, Justin Tyrell, a wealthy civil servant, appeared at the orphanage, looking to adopt - and picked her. She had her own room with a giant bed, nice clothes, tutors, a private school, a personal maid, and trips to the mountains where Tyrell would ski. However, there was no mother, just the house keeper, but there was a stream of women who'd visit, sometimes spending the night in her adopted father's room. He also dabbled in art, selling to his friends. She had no idea where the pieces came from.

Her roommate told her about the other man who came looking for her later, but he didn't adopt anyone.

One of his "trips", they spent having dinner with this minister who kept staring at her, making her feel uncomfortable. Justin and this minister had a long talk outside of her hearing and at the end of the night shook hands. It was back at the hotel room that Justin told her that she was now betrothed to the minister's boss, and he would collect her when she became an adult. All perfectly legal, he assured her.

Justin mistook her silence as acceptance, but she was feeling betrayed and was already planning, getting things ready as she scanned the library to learn everything she could to help her escape.

Those plans got an unexpected boost when she was 14 when she was kidnapped by Tony, a local crime boss, who was upset by a painting Justin had "sold" him. Knowing Justin wouldn't report her to the police, he decided to make some use of her in his smuggling operation - and took a shine to her. Suddenly the whole gang was wanting to teach her some of their skills - picking pockets, professional gambling, computer fraud, firing a blaster, and making all sorts of underworld connections.

Her time with them was fruitful. Tony helped her get a new identity and set her up with a good technical school that taught her how to maintain aerospace equipment for spaceships. Billie got herself a nice job at the Eden orbital shipyards, working in their repair shop and installing equipment.

It was a good life, she was able to deflect most questions about her prior life, keeping it simple. Unfortunately, a former member of Tony's gang spotted her and ratted her out to his new boss - and they began blackmailing her, needing her help to get into the secure warehouse pods. Knowing what waited for her if she went to the cops, she had little choice but to help them bypass the security doors and access the warehouses.

Interstellar Cruise Ship Scorpio

First there were the Draconians, a race of bipedal lizardmen, who overran a survey ship, copied it, then made raids on several worlds and besides taking slaves, they collected all their knowledge and fed it into their computers.

They took slaves from a planet known as Zayas, and for a while they were just like all the other alien races - very predictable. Then in a shocking move, they managed to trap the Draconian queens, took their knowledge database, evacuated almost all the alien slaves, and managed to seal off the planet in its own pocket dimension. Draconians who were off planet found themselves leaderless for the first time in their history. While new queens popped up offworld, they never reached the same mind-numbing level of the prior queens. Draconians became independent.

Then the Zayans vanished, sealing themselves away, but shared some of the Draconian's shared knowledge with the others. The remaining alien races started an interstellar government, called PAX. Sometimes members of uncontacted planets wound up roaming offworld, they were called "Wilders", many of them taking temporary jobs, especially aboard ships.

Human Wilders, some generations later, started coming up with their own myths and customs, some of them very confused from their Earth origins. Somehow, some wilder introduced them all to the boardgame of Monopoly, and suddenly human crews wouldn't leave port without a game on board. Each wilder keeps a very customized Monopoly game piece, and a quarter of the board. developing whole new customs around that.

There was an event, nobody knows exactly what sparked it, but PAX quickly divided itself into various factions and fought. Some of them even used special bombs to induce solar flares and the resulting solar flare would torch the planet, usually destroying all life on the exposed face. They also developed weapons to cripple their star-drives.

Decades later, Earth develops new star drives that makes cheap travel possible and send probes out to nearby worlds outside their system and found they were compatible with their own life. However, while they're constructing the first two exploratory ships, a probe brings back a recording of floating alien warships around a mostly desert world, even tracks a small shuttle doing a bit of salvaging and heading back to the surface, finding various ships on what looked to be a spaceport and a city with a water canal next to it.

So Earth launched Project Bedlam and sends their first two ships, Azimov and Heinlein, to carefully try and figure out what's going on here. The crew of the Azimov actually makes contact, their crew are invited to come to the surface where some of them already know a half-dozen Earth languages as one of them (Jun'kai) had actually visited Earth before as part of his university studies.

They find out about wilders, about human wilders, and why they made a statue of a human in their city. They also add modules to the Azimov to boost its speed. One of the crew gets kidnapped and one of the friendly aliens, Jun'kai, helps steal their spare stardrive to get the crew member back. Jun'kai gets locked up and taken back to Earth.

It's been decades but Jun'kai is being returned to the planet Bedlam - on board the Scorpio, guarded by the Valkyrii, self-telepathic winged humanoid mercenaries who are all cloned to be female.

Sometimes alien architecture is found, like a weird prison complex on a remote moon in Corporate space. However, the first survey team became trapped, and needed rescuing.

Sometimes there are groups of space pirates, raiding for supplies. They have a curious custom where they sometimes sell back the things they stole - a tech ransom.

And the Zayans...

Oh, I'm glad you like that, it's a favorite movie of mine. But I've run this game elsewhere a few times, this is the first time I decided to go with the free trip sweepstakes. Although I did like the spareness of Korben Dallas' apartment in that.

Some of this is pulled from Traveller and various works of sf, and some of it is my own creations.

I have a few scenarios envisioned, it should be interesting.

Interstellar Cruise Ship Scorpio

"Herrin," the Valkyri said, opening the curtin, "You're..."

She paused at the sight of the spangly dressed Draconian, breathing into a paper bag. "Stage fright, still?"
"This isn't easy," he panted. "They're all predators! Every last one of them! From the smallest to the oldest! The most dangerous species that the galaxy has ever seen!"

The Valkyri's right eyebrow arched. His eyes widen in sudden horror as the color in his scales paled to pastel green.

"You're... you're just as bad!" he managed. "I can't do it, I can't do it...!"
"You say that every night," the Valkyri said, shaking her head while her wings rustled in irritation. "Pull yourself together and get on stage!"

The Draconian's chest heaved, then he managed to push himself upright.

"Why did I agree to do this?" he moaned.
"Because they're paying you well," the Valkyrii sighs, rolling her eyes. "Get out there!"

It was a short walk from his dressing room to the stage. From behind the curtain, he could hear the murmur of conversation, the clanking of silverware, a high-pitched laugh that made the raised the hackles on his scaly back - but he was a professional. He brushed his synthetic hair, straightened his jacket, then did the scariest part of his job - he exposed his teeth, knowing every one of the predators in the audience were going to see that challenge.

"I'm not getting paid enough for this," he whined quietly, then nodded. Moments later, the band played a fanfare, and he stepped out from behind the curtain, sweating bullets.

"Ladies and Gentlemen!" he called out in false bravado as he pulled out a card from his inner pocket and read, "Welcome, I am Herrin Volz, and I am your Earth Invasion Co-ordinator...!"

He paused, exaggeratedly staring at the offending card in his hand, then tossed it away. "Sorry, old card."

The audience laughed politely as he pulled out a new card.

"I am Herrin Volz, and it is my honor to welcome you aboard the Zodiac Line's latest cruise ship, Scorpio! We're hoping you're enjoying that new ship smell!"

Off-gassing paint and plastic that the air scrubbers were struggling to deal with, he grinned, delightful.

"Especially to all our sweepstake ticket winners, who have won a full year-long voyage on this very ship!"

There'd been more winners than expected, a glitch in the software, but legally the line had to honor the tickets. The expensive passenger berthing compartments, not part of the sweepstakes, were paying the operational costs this trip.

"I hope you had a great time at the colony of Beaumonde and scenic Port Charles!" he gushed. It wasn't bad if you liked mountains and trees, or sliding down snowy slopes with a pair of skis. And they did a lot of drinking, either to prepare themselves to go sking or to warm themselves up afterward. They boasted a lot of breweries for a small colony.

Beaumonde had recovered well, after the scorching.

"We are currently in transit to our next jump point to the human colony world, Shilnon, and we'll be arriving in seven short days! Please contact our ship's AI for more information about the wonderful sights and attractions at our next destination!"

Most went to see the glass towers and to listen to them sing in the wind, an unexpected result of the scorching that world underwent. It was like visiting a cemetery that sang to you - not that any of them would feel that.

"And now, let's start our glorious floor show!" he said, as the music swelled and he could escape into wings as human dancers came gliding out, the sight still chilling his blood as each one smiled, bearing their teeth.

"Good job," the Valkyrii said, clapping him on the shoulder and handing him a bowl of hard boiled eggs. "Eat up, you're back up on stage in twenty five minutes."

"Do I have to?" he said, staring down at his bowl.
"Is this the talk of a once proud race who over a thousand years ago was enslaving a third of the galaxy?"
"We didn't know any better," he whined, then ate the first egg.

An interstellar civil war had already decimated many of the alien worlds in this sector, leaving few survivors by the time Humanity made its way into interstellar space with cheap star-drives. Most of the passengers are going to be human - the few aliens are likely to be minor celebrities or government reps, as they're the only ones who can afford passage (no sweepstake winners among them).

While this ship boasts elegant dining, a casino, pools and plenty of boutique shops, it's also prepared for hostile attacks - automatic defensive weapon emplacements and anyone unauthorized trying to access the bridge or critical areas will be lucky if they only walk away stunned by the first layer of defense.
