I'm not exactly sure about what you mean by the thing that Wes said. What Wes meant when he was talking to Jamie was less about her/his gender, and more on the actual true appearance of Jamie. Jamie's real appearance could still look androgynous like how some anime characters can be, but could still mention what her gender is if people are still confused. I think it would be funny if Jamie's real appearance was hard to distinguish between male and female.
