hmm well an idea of mine was to have the captain of my vessel from a family heavily rooted and supportive of a particular religion/cult and that would influence how his ship runs, mandatory sermons, screening new crew to ensure only faithful are permitted to serve aboard. And as the ship underwent it's numerous re-fittings and repairs over the last thousand years it influenced how the ship looks. Gothic angels/ gargoyles or whatever as figureheads and even gun ports. Added probably on the dime of the my characters family.
I don't know. it's either that or something else.
That sounds good to me! I mean, you can flesh out the existing religion or as I said make one up! It's social/political power etc etc is up to you. Basically I'd rather not have a version of the 40k Ecclesiarchy be a thing, but other than that anything is fair game. Combining the gothic aesthetic with something more based on graeco-roman or Indian religion might be interesting. Stocking your ship with bulls for sacrifices before a battle :)
@Skylar: Frankly, more human captains of cruisers is what we need. A rear- or vice- admiral is a possibility as well. As for ship types, feel free to innovate and play what you want to play!
The Kingdom is fairly religiously tolerant. I mention a common religion among the aristocracy under the faction section that's sortve the defacto state religion/religion of much of the human aristocracy. It is loosely confuciany in flavor, but it's not exclusive of other religions and it's not an established church or cult. You can feel free to make up common/powerful religions in the Kingdom though! I'd rather stay away from 'repressive medieval church in space', but otherwise go hog wild!
Sorry to see you go!
@Ink- no problem! One character is fine, and doesnt mess up anything. We now have room for a vice or rear admiral character to anyone interested.
Hi all, I just added more detail to my characters, so take a look. Suggestions, criticism, etc. are welcome.
Flagg, wouldn't Morning have to be an Admiral, or something greater, to be the commander of Epsilon? He's a Commodore right now.
Also, as a heads-up to future players - we could use a Rear Admiral.
My idea was for Commodores to have command of small battlegroups or task forces within the invasion fleet. So he would have like two other cruisers and some escorts under his direct command for independent operations. Same with commodorerobot's character, who is a commodore. I think instead of battlegroup I should use the term squadron- will make the changes.
@Inkblood: I've glanced over it and they look good. I will go over them in some more detail now. Per pepper's suggestion, it probly makes sense to make your admiral character a vice-admiral, just so our fleet has a clear chain of command.
Chain of command so far, in reverse order:
Lt Commander Logan Noctura (Enalais)- member of rho squadron, fighter ace
Cpt. Leidof Lutzen (Samebito)- member of tbd
Cpt. Gillam Balesko (gorgen)- member of tbd
Cpt. Welkin (inkblood)- member of rho squadron
Cpt. Crakehall (Flagg/NPC)- member of tbd
Commodore Morning (Flagg)- commands epsilon squadron, composition tbd
Commodore von Ingram (CommodoreRobot)- commands rho squadron, composition tbd, includes cpt. welkin
Commodore Ujarak (zombieaccount)- command tbd
Vice-Admiral Neion (inkblood)
Admiral Rutherford (pepperm1nt)- commands Second Royal Expeditionary Fleet
Grand Duke von Ravenstein (Flagg)- commands Second Royal Expeditionary Combined Taskforce
I decided to pretty much re-imagine my character even if his name and appearance are still pretty similar since working out the back story combined with Flagg recommending I start out a captain instead made me decide he's probably better off not a Admiral.
As long as your character is of captain or commodore rank, I'm good. I personally liked the idea of him being a xeno-intolerant Once Voicer, which will add interesting tensions into the RP. But that's up to you.
Athanasius Morning
Rank: Commodore, Second Royal Expeditionary Taskforce, Commander of Naval Squadron Epsilon
Physical Description: Tall, slim, human male with sharp features. Extremely pale and slightly sickly looking from too much time spent in artificial gravity and sunlight. His right eye has been replaced with a bulky augmentic targeting module. Close cropped black hair, impeccable deep blue uniform with several medals displayed prominently.
Personality: Cool, professional, haughty, disdainful of bravado, incompetence, non-humans, army personnel, and radical politics.
Commodore Morning sat slouched in the Command Throne, eye closed, complex navigational calculations flitting between his mind and the ship's Semi-Sentience.
High Command had wanted his battlegroup in the Maalik System within the week, Valyrian Standard Time, and the taskforce was ahead of schedule.
The sub-space lateral tide was with them, thankfully, and with the exception of a grav-pool around the Hannor Crescent that had needed careful bypassing, the journey had been free of any major obstacles.
So far, so good.
Morning concluded his calculations, finding the taskforce's speed, course setting, and projected arrival time to his satisfaction. He sent a terse data-blurt through his neuro-uplink to the other ships under his command and their captains, commending their efficiency.
A chime dinged softly in his ear. The strategic briefing in five.
The Commodore opened his flesh eye. It took a moment for it to adapt to the dim of the bridge, and his augmentic optic whirred and clicked as it adjusted in sympathy with his biological sight.
The Lord Ashfallow's long, arch-ceilinged bridge was busy but quiet. Commodore Morning ran a tight ship, and did not allow noise levels on his bridge to exceed an indecorous level unless there was an emergency. Even in combat command staff were expected control their volumes, like the professionals they were.
War was no place for bloodthirsty braggadocio and showmanship, in the Commodore's opinion. Calm, orderly deliberation followed by decisive action, that was how to fight and win. Righteous fury may make the heart flutter, but it cost lives and more often than not, victory.
The Ashfallow's Semi-Sentience signaled its agreement with Morning's musings with a pleasurable neuro-pulse. A delightful beast, this ship.
The Commodore had commanded three different vessels over the course of his time in His Grace's navy, and worked as a staff officer on four more. Each ship's Semi-Sentience had acquired a different flavor over the long centuries of their service, each had an almost-personality formed by patchworks of impressions and echoes from the many minds that had entered them. Some ships were blustery and uncooperative, others irritatingly submissive, a few were quirky to the point of insanity...but the Lord Ashfallow was a professional. Cool, detached, terse, prompt. Very much like the Commodore himself.
Morning severed his link to the Semi-Sentience, ignoring the usual aching twinge of disconnection, and stood up. He straightened his uniform- the deep royal blue of His Grace's Navy, heavily starched and embroidered with silver tracery- and walked briskly down the bridge towards the briefing station.
Ship Name: Lord Ashfallow
Ship Type: Demnevanni Class Carrier Cruiser
Semi-Sentience Profile: Thanks to a career mostly relegated to anti-pirate actions and system defense, the Ashfallow is a ship in almost pristine condition, and its AI remains largely impersonal and uncorrupted. It has, however, developed a slight tendency for impatience with deviations from Naval protocol, and its great age combined with a relative lack of heavy combat experience has made it both rigid and unimaginative. It is a reliable and efficient Semi-Sentience, but one that relies heavily on its captain for creativity and improvisation, two features not generally associated with the highly competent but conservative Commodore Morning.
Ship Details/History:
- population 40,000
- primary weapons: the Ashfallow is armed with a suite of forward torpedo launchers as well as medium-to-close range solid ordinance and laser weaponry capable of engaging cruiser and capital class ships. Like all Demnevanni Class carriers, the Ashfallow is a carrier designed to hold its own in a close range brawl.
- marine contingent: The Ashfallow has a large contingent of human marines and boarding craft outfitted for offensive actions. Commodore Morning does not tolerate xenos or mercenaries on his ship, and refuses to make use of G'Mok marines.
- strikecraft contingent: The Ashfallow is outfitted with a full compliment of strikecraft designed to provide a large taskforce with a sizeable fighter screen and bomber compliment.
Konrad von Ravenstein
Rank: Grand Duke of Lynz, Protector of Far Valyrius, Supreme Commander of the Second Royal Expeditionary Forces
Alias: The Butcher of Vornheln, the Red Duke
Physical Description: A man of slightly below average height, broadly built, heavyset but not fat. Strong facial features, with a thick mustache. The Duke has startlingly bright green eyes. He generally wears a white military tunic bisected by a red sash, and wears a single medal on his chest, the silver sunburst of the Order of Alexiana, the highest military decoration in the Kingdom given to army commanders, awarded after his victory at Odros during the Arian Jihad.
Personality: The Grand Duke is a famously quiet man, preferring to give orders through trusted underlings. It is not uncommon for entire strategy briefings to be held in his presence without him saying a single word. His patience and capacity for stillness and inactivity are as legendary as his ruthlessness. He is not a great orator and tends to inspire fear and respect rather than love and devotion in those under his command. He almost never publicly loses his facade of icy, quiet calm. The Grand Duke is known to be a heavy drinker, but is otherwise not much given to luxury or self indulgence, though he is a passionate hunter. Unusually for a man of his upbringing and station, the Duke is quite tolerant of xenos (the old joke in the army is that the Duke doesn't care for the lives of all soldiers equally) and is known for seeking out the advice of his Gn'Mok Legion commanders with special attention. His relationship with the Navy is mixed- few in the highly conservative naval hierarchy appreciate the Grand Duke's often brutally pragmatic, unorthodox and 'dishonorable' methods of warfare and many senior naval personnel raise an eyebrow at his strained relationship with the Royal House, but his willingness to listen to the advice of his subordinates, his tolerance of failure and support independent initiative in subordinates, and the fact that he is one of the few Valyrian commanders actively feared by astrogothic chieftains has earned him a certain level of respect.
Personal History: WIP
IC Sample: WIP
Second Expeditionary Force Command Staff:
Rear Admiral Gerhardt von Gimzbrundfildgeschutzen: The Grand Duke's primary naval liaison. A short, tubby man of sour complexion and disposition. A talented logistics expert with a personal life marred by a series of homosexual scandals, who owes his current position entirely to the Grand Duke, to whom he is unswervingly loyal.
Count Aldamaar Cezare: The Grand Duke's chief of staff. Handsome and charismatic, Cezare is a famous womanizer and alcoholic. A competent chief of staff, he is one of the few friends the Grand Duke can be said to have, and it is he through whom the Grand Duke does most of his talking. Some joke that Cezare is the mouth and the Grand Duke the mind.
Captain Ulthosour Crakehall: A ponderous, cadaverous officer, Captain Crakehall commands the Grand Duke's flagship, the VRS Arrogance. Addicted to his neuro-feedback provided by the ship's AI, Crakehall rarely leaves his Command Throne on the bridge.
Ship Name: Arrogance
Ship Type: TBD
Semi-Sentience Profile: TBD

Just read it and...absolutely fantastic CS, Pepper. I'm really pleased with the quality of writing and creativity from everyone who's submitted a character sheet so far. A few things:
Since you're (one of) our admirals, you may if you wish use a HSR4 class ship. The two battleships classes currently posted are unavailable, but you can either have his ship be a Dratha class or make up your own ship type (of course, you can also use an HSR3 class ship if you think that suits the admiral better). Happy to collaborate on ship class ideas, let me know.
Secondly, I designed the character of Commodore Morning to be the second in command/lacky of our Admiral character. As such, you are welcome to control him whenever it is useful/convenient for you to do so over the course of the RP as though he were your own character.
Thirdly, @ all:
I have yet to introduce the group to the overall commander of our little expedition, the Grand Duke Konrad von Ravenstein. I'll try to get a CS for him up tomorrow, but here's a teaser to get your brains working, since he is a figure that would be known to/familiar to almost everyone's characters, at least by reputation. He is known for being a highly competent and utterly ruthless general, strategist and politician, responsible for many successful operations during the Arian Jihad and other wars. During the Arian war, he defeated many more tactically astute and genuinely brilliant commanders thanks to his utter disregard for casualties and an excellent grasp of the logistical side of warfare. He is known for making total war, and for his heavy use of xenos and mercenary forces, whom he views as useful and utterly disposable assets. His most impressive victory was the counter-invasion of Odros, which secured the Valyrian system once and for all five years into the Jihad. He is most famous, however, for the Suppression of the Vorheln Revolts in the Vos System in the later and most desperate years of the Arian Jihad, where he brutally crushed a series of socialist revolts and worker strikes in the industrial super city of Vornheln. It was there he earned the sobriquets "the Butcher of Vornheln" and "the Red Duke." He is a ground, not naval, commander, and operational fleet command will rest with the admirals. He is however, the overall strategist for the Maalik Reconquest, so he will be an active presence in everyones lives. It is an open secret that the King is terrified of him.
Posted my sheet in the character tab. I still need to do the ship sheet, but I am too tired for that right now.
Great, reading now. Since you're our admiral, you may if you wish use a HSR4 class ship. I shall move over my CS to the char tab on Monday, tomorrow be the super bowl. Other than the shoals system which i will change in my CS on monday as well, what do you think so far Flagg?
Overall it's just fine! I'm going to do a big review of the CSes soon enough and I'll send everyone any changes I may have for them then, but honestly aside from some minor edits I dont anticipate any of the people whove posted CSes so far to have to make huge change before being accepted. So, in sum, expect some minor notes from me, but overall everyone looks good and the IC will get started relatively soon.
