Current 10+ years of an RP idea, finally finished, on 10.10.2025. Goodnight Raven Squad, you were the best, wildest, most silly near future SOF RP that lived on the guild, and you got a worthy send off :)

Bio

I've RP'd for the best part of over 15 years now here on the Guild, and particularly like military settings, both contemporary, past and near future. I have even dabbled in a little more experimental RPs, as well as created a plethora of 1x1s over my time in the guild. I like creating RPs with a distinct flavour- and often shift between narrative-led RPs to semi-randomised plots. I've been more a GM lately than a player, and don't really lean into fandom- instead, exploring my own universes lifting themes from other source material.

My main interests are military-themed, near-future RPs, with a focus on technology. But I'm beginning to push what that RP idea looks like- taking inspiration from lots of media and focussing on the fun, indulgent side of RP, whilst also exploring the lows and emotional side.

Raven Squad is a project over seven years in the making, and focusses on a class-based, eccentric yet half-grounded near future special forces team that acts as a response team where you can't send any special forces team in. It's incredibly dumb, incredibly loose, and yet, has delivered some of my favourite plot points in RPG. A brainless action flick a la John Wick and Kingsman meets a complex thriller with a fun left turn in it, Raven has been the culmination of over a decade of loving special forces RPG, gaming influences and other silliness in a package that has provided players with something quite different to a normal military themed RPG. While at an end, this is an RP that is a signature- it's silly as hell, takes itself barely seriously, and is what peak fun military RPG to me should be.

Delta Hyper is a love letter to Wipeout, F1's Drive to Survive (Netflix) and contemporary Formula One, with influences from solarpunk, cyberpunk, transhumanism and other posthumanist concepts. An RP that follows pilots in their ups and downs, it's a story that hasn't got me playing an actual character, but framing the camera at each pilot (played by others), and presenting it as if it were a documentary. Lifting elements from TTRPG, this is a Racing RPG like no other and no parallel exists- using dice rolls and randomisation, with a stats-driven system to generate race results, rather than actually RPing the races, players experience the fast-paced, dynamic world of anti-gravity racing. This means that come Qualifying and Race, the results are genuinely a surprise to everyone- and based on decisions made through dilemmas and decisions made between races. Friendships, rivalry, the glamour and even a little political undertone play out in 2094, in a colourful, utopian future that focuses on the fight to take first place.

Then there's Tactical Breach Wizards: Fireteam Hex. First use of any set IP as a formal setting, this is an RP that offers a darker mirror to Raven Squad, focussing on the other side of the equation- unlikely heroes in an uncomfortable position. I don't normally do fantasy, but the world, the lore, the feeling of the characters and the ability to write a comedy just was too difficult to pass up. An RP that focuses on a group running away from a variety of threats as wanted mercenary wizards in the middle of a post-revolution, Eastern-Europe adjacent 1990s to present Polavia.

roleplayerguild.com/topics/197399-dis…

Lastly, Dispatch: Heroes of Claremont. This is another IP-adjacent world, albeit drawing on a different setting and a new cast of superheroes. As my "first" proper superhero RP, this combines workplace comedy, a Storyteller-lite system and a fun, diverse, and large cast together in a dynamic, diverse setting.

I'm pretty flexible and try and get back to people on ideas and responses, but sometimes, I may become very busy and it will take some time till I am un-busy. I aim to clear posts within a week!

This is going to sound really horrible, but again, in real life, Wilhelm II was aloof, withered in his left arm, and a bit strange in terms of how he was. Here's an excerpt:

"Amongst the Kaiser's most intimate circle, this sycophancy could take the strangest forms--with one mediatised imperial count allowing himself to be led before the Kaiser imitating a poodle "with a marked rectal opening" while the Chief of the Military Cabinet could dance before him dressed in a tutu and a feather hat. Bulow, none the less, could justify the regime before the Reichstag in 1903 with the words: "The German people do not want a shadow Kaiser, the German people want a Kaiser made of flesh and blood.""

Welcome to what happens when most of Europe's royalty at this time is pretty inbred. :D I think he'll be awesome in RP none the less as he was very militaristic and the way you've put him down is pretty good- I'll modify Dmitri's own position. He'll have his quirks and definitely a few things that will be very laughable, don't you worry.
Good good. Nice.
In Imperial Russia, snow fall on you.

Dmitri's going to be a fun character, I can only imagine- he'll be a wildcard, in terms of his allegiances to say the least. I think surprisingly enough, he's going to dislike a lot of the characters in this RP unless they're French, or maybe even to some extent, German (though it really, really depends here).
(I really couldn't think of what to post. So I made a pretty short post, setting up more sniping.)

Andrew watched on through his own XM500 scope, adjusting himself for the lorry's movement, as he knew he'd shoot if Nolan missed. And that was pretty impossible, Andrew reminded himself, as the fifty went off loudly- and detonated the truck, the fuel line catching and burning a huge section of the lorry, as it partly went up.
"Fuck man, awesome shot!" He said, putting his own rifle back on the front bullbar, as he knew that they had done the job. Firing the engine up, the stealthed out quads actually quite quiet, Andrew led the way again, the two aware that the truck wasn't going anywhere. Speeding around a set of rocks, he had to go full-out on the gas up a steep hill, the snow kicking up thick and thin as Andrew slightly adjusted his course, flinging the quad past a set of rocks as he looked at his GPS.
"We're coming close, another klick. Should be no more distractions- we've already dealt with a mortar site, so let's stay from afar and eliminate the SAMs- then go close in and rig the bastards up. They won't be good for any airdrops in our area if they find anything high-flying, to say the least. It's why we had to quad it in for so fucking far." Andrew added, kicking up snow as he avoided the top of the ridegeline, not wanting to skyline as he looked over at the view. The sun was barely visible over the peaks, and it was still dark as hell- though NVGs weren't needed. The timing reminded him almost of Dushanbe, though it was a little darker than that. It was the moment before sunrise, to say the least.

The route continued for a few hundred meters, a deep ridgeline forcing Andrew to stick left on an icy path that teetered over a very, very sharp drop. He didn't want to look down- he just kept going, the quad still gripping as he wondered why they didn't have snowmobiles. Maybe it was the fact that they wouldn't work as well on the dirt tracks that existed across cleared areas of the road, the snowfall mainly on the steep peaks and the Quads, with their winterized tyres and spikes, able to grip far better. They'd be using these for a little longer, and they felt easier to hide too, in some ways to Andrew than what he thought a snowmobile would be. He saw a set of rocks, and checked his GPS bearing. This was it- as he looked back at Nolan, giving a "Stop" signal with his hand, as he slowed up, skidding to a halt behind the rocks as he parked side-on, to avoid the whole thing tipping over. Taking the rifle from the front, the white ghillie suited spotter was off his quad, and already moving up into a gap in the rocks.
"This reminds me a ton of Chechnya, you know. Mountains, except this time, they've actually fucking deployed their munitions." Andrew added, as he moved into the gap, setting the XM500 and a spotting device. He let Nolan budge in, as he already got to work. It was a lorry of some sort, with a SAM launcher set on the back- with about a squad of men around the area. Not much else- a couple of tents, and a few other things that weren't exactly entirely out of the ordinary for a Taliban camp.
"Okay...target is 599m, the SAM launcher. Furthest tent, 630, closest man and the fire, 580. I say we immobilize the truck, I can go and lay a brick of C4 down after they're all dead, and we make a call to OP Viper before finishing up and returning to Vulture." Andrew said, looking to Nolan as he adjusted his own rifle. Nolan truly didn't miss a beat when it came to shooting- and Andrew knew full well that he was a good friend to have, in combat or back at base. He covered his ass, and the reverse in principle- the fact being, that Andrew knew that Nolan trusted him to the T when he said what he said, and in reverse. Andrew knew that Nolan had his traits, and he himself, had his own, as a New Zealander. But they were at least in some ways accustomed to these cold mountains, and it was the primetime to be sniping from.
"Could shoot out the wheel or the engine- either way, it won't move anywhere. Though I see a KSVK among the set there- that might be a problem, you know." Andrew added, checking the XM500, moving the crosshair over one of the men, aware that it was Nolan's call to start the party again.
Haha....yeah, that's fine, I mean it still works, it's just a insight perhaps that I gave- it could still work, since Germany and Russia are brilliant at bitching in this period about each other. The UK is sitting at the other end of the table just going "Meh, fuck that" and sticks it's head out till 1914. Welcome to British foreign policy involving Europe!

I'm just waiting for your character now Nobody- I thought of having him serve as a bodyguard to his character since you mentioned you'd have a Prince, in some form or manner- though I'm fine if that isn't the case. I did shamefully use Alexander III of Russia as a significant influence on Dmitri, but still, this isn't a regular European reagent when you look at him...that fucking beard just settled why Dmitri has one. Could be quite funny, if perhaps Dmitri was mistaken for him...

This is going to sound really, really pedantic...but weren't the Russians also at huge quarrels with the Polish nationalist movements at the time? I mean, the Russians and Germans actually had some co-operation on that factor- and it's just the one bit of Alternative History you'll need to walk carefully around, in order to make a war-threat between Russia and Germany better. I can advise that the Germans/Russians were at huge odds over Russian alliance systems to the French...something which of course, the Germans would be threatened by. And all the Balkans before even WW1, was a powder keg which is just German/Russian bitching for most of the 1890s/1900s/1910s. Though I'm fine with the PLLF, it would need the right spin- I like the direction though.

Also, I believe that Fredrich III died in 1888- though if he hadn't of died of inflamation, then I can only imagine that yep, that'd be fine- it was just a wonder really. All of this is just drawing from what I know of the period.

I like the idea of a United Kingdom of Scandinavia- and I can only imagine the idea of Norway, Sweden, Denmark and their attached territory in Iceland/Greenland bickering with Finland. Finland at this time was basically Russian, no matter how entirely you paint it- sovereignty was very, very limited, so I could only imagine why the Scandinavians are tempted to work with Germany. While Sweden has remained very neutral, and Denmark has previously had issues with Prussia over Schleswig-Holstein, I could imagine the idea that they would want Finland to join- and even support Socialist efforts in these regions to usurp the Tsar's rule. Another thing of interest is that Alexander III is batshit. Coincidentally, he dies a year after this RP's setting, but after 1881 when his dad, Alexander II was killed by a bomb, he basically repressed the Russian people to all hell and kept Russia's backwardness by reactionary policies and all (interesting facts- he was strong as anything, and could bend coins with his hands...yeah, Russia. Died of kidney failure too!) . So perhaps this could be another biting point- I believe he didn't get on well with people like Bismarck and Wilhelm I, so I can't imagine him being all too friendly when there's airships at stake. The French would play a huge role in arming the Russians up, and building their railways due to huge, huge natural resources they tapped into- you could imagine perhaps Russia being like a goldmine for resources, and creating a force of unquestionable size. I really like the fact that it ties very well to what I've studied of Germany/Russia, and the period couldn't be better really- this is really the meat of when we see escalation (in reality) to WW1, and considering we've thrown a Steampunk feel to it...yeah, politics and the entire RP will be very, very interesting indeed.
I'm going to wait for Nobody to get his CS up, as I believe that my character was to be a bodyguard to his Prince or something.
Got it man- just throw up a post soonish and I'll keep us moving.
Name: Dmitri Pyotr Ivanovich

Nation: Russian

Age: 26

Occupation: Bodyguard/Okhrana Agent

Description: 6"5, bald and heavily bearded as well as having a stature that is pretty...well, Russian, Dmitri looks scary to most. He is physically refined, and built around strength more than agility. As a bodyguard, this tends to be moreover a useful trait. He has brown eyes and a brown beard, wearing usually a black duffel coat that fits his stature. Even though he is young, the fact that he has this well developed a beard, as well as a few scars on his face and hands, suggests he's seen more than enough years. He also wears a white shirt of sorts when not wearing his duffel, and a black pair of trusty boots. He looks like the face of a Russian that could serve a Regent as a guard, from a mile away. He doesn't wear a hat usually- and the fear factor does increase in some ways because of this.

Family:
Dmtri's father, Pyotr Vyshnegrasky Ivanovich, was a Noble in Russia (died from nothing other than Kidney Failure, wahey if you can guess why)- while his Mother now is simply a head of a teaching board in Karelia, Russia. Dmitri has an older and a younger sister, Anna and Jadwiga respectively. Dmitri's godfather was a Colonel in the Russian Imperial Army,

Equipment:
Flask of Vodka (Reasons)
Diary
TBC

Weaponry:

Nagant-Federov Avtomat Rifle
--Capable of Fully-Automatic fire, firing 6.5mm Arisaka Rounds.
-Rifle is still prototype- and is still relatively inaccurate in full-auto.
-Bayonet is usually mounted on the bottom lug.
-Doesn't carry this around on close protection duties.

-Nagant Revolver
-Chambered for 7.5mm- Swedish Variant.
-Quickloader- used for Close Protection

Naval Cutlass (Shortened)
-Handle has been adapted, to deal with situations where the revolver will simply not do.

Personality: Dmitri is a surprising character in some ways. Toughened, reinforced, he looks like he could crush your soul by looking into your eyes for long enough, combined with his appearance, and perhaps he does not know when to stop doing this- to good friends, or vile people. But he has some education- and speaks English, German and his native Russian tongue fluently, his father a noble working as a diplomat and sometimes bringing Dmitri along on trips abroad, being able to also read and write in the former to to a limited extent. He has a tamed set of anger- and if brought about to his state, he won't take no quarter with whomever his enemy is, being brutal and almost stoic to his methods while when calm, can be perhaps a good friend to count on. As a bodyguard, he values his life as nil compared to the people he is protecting, and will keep a vigilant eye out, being a man who respects who he deals with unless he knows full well of their status. Though he is bad with his alcohol. Russians, and particularly ones like Dmitri, take a lot to get drunk. So when he is, it's usually after a ridiculous quantity of spirits. And he isn't fully in control when he is drunk...

Bio: Dmitri was born in Sevenomorsk, Karelia- in the far north of Russia, to a reasonably well-off family- the son of a former Naval officer who moved to Sevenomorsk and then became a diplomat, while his mother was a member on the local board of education. As a boy, he went with his father often to trips to Europe, the son of one of the Tsar's Diplomats, and he was educated well, despite the harsh conditions in this area of Russia. He found himself to be strong, and his father always wished for Dmitri to stay on in the Navy, as an officer. This was something he did- and his six year conscription from the age of 18 onwards was spent in the Russian Navy, stationed at his town of birth. He found himself very capable, and by the end of his service, was the Captain 3rd Rank of the Petrogradskii Nevskii, a destroyer stationed in this remote region of the world. He left at the age of 24, and following advice from his father, as well as his prior influence, moved into the world of working as a Bodyguard- viewing the Navy as merely too harsh an existence that made him no money. By this point, Dmitri was a hardened, and well trained soldier, being feared by his own men aboard the ship. He saw that the world had changed- and the Navies of the Sea would be replaced by the Navies of the Air. His father died a year ago- and following his move to more mainland Europe, finds he is able to earn better pay, and support himself better- something which his many talents and skills provide well for him in his role. He serves whomever pays best- and finds his talents are very adaptable for a man like him. He also keeps strong ties to back home, aware that of his position, he is in a good position to listen in on some nobles in European society.

Another fact of Dmitri, is that he is a member of the secretive Okhrana- the Tsar's Secret Police, who suppress all Socialist and Populist, or even Liberal or any word of Democracy in Russia in any shape or form. To say the least, he is more of a paid asset abroad to deal with foreign threats to Russian Autocracy, and due to shady reasons following his military service, now serves as an overseas member, an agent of sorts to carry out the Okhrana's will in his position in Europe. Combined with his occupation, it gives him an unparalleled reach into certain individuals in Europe- in particular, dealing with threats that concern Russia. You'd be very lucky to know this, since you'd either be dead or in a prison cell if Dmitri knew about it.
(Skeleton- I will expand on it. I was thinking of having him as the son of a Russian prince indirectly related to the Tsar- not entirely how to work it out though.)
