Sit Rep

Afghanistan, April 2011

Stationed in Camp Spear, roughly fifty miles north of Kandahar City, Afghanistan, lays the composite forces of two battalions- the Canadian 3rd Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment, and the US 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment- very different in their creation, and...well, disagreeing on certain matters, yet friendly enough. They form what is unofficially known as the "Devil's Brigade"- a harkening back to the days of WW2, when Canadian and US forces fought side by side in the US. Army's First Special Service Force- as a grouping comparable to the Rangers of the time. While their operations today are very different, that is where the similarity ends- the men and women of the "Brigade" forming a formidable anvil indeed against enemy forces, with both new recruits and veterans aware of the threats they face.

The troop surge by the US seen a year before has seen a wide ripple of effects turn Kandahar Province from a resurgent area of the country, with patrols getting hairy on more than one occasion, despite multiple IED factories and weapons caches being destroyed. It doesn't stand for much it seems- because it hasn't put the Taliban off, and an above-average harvest of Opium has bought them more than enough resources to pool into local recruitment process, buying AKs, explosive materials and other equipment required to fight a guerrilla war- and fight it well. Canadian and US Marines forces are becoming slowly withered, and are being pushed from the areas they had liberated weeks earlier, in the troop surge. They are seeing the Taliban risk attacking Camp Spear, a relatively isolated fortification compared to Camp Bastion and other significant outposts in the area.

So the unexpected is counted on. The Canadians and US Marines at Camp Spear are rallied to join the operation to take the Maz-i-Afar Valley, in the southern Hindu Kush, to the north of the province. The mission is known as Operation Talon's Claw, the purge that despite reduced troop numbers, and capability, proves itself to be the one timed when the Taliban least wanted it, and yet the one that proves Afghanistan's merciless brutality once more. The last operation, before they leave- the last purge to at least make the situation clearer to the Taliban that the ANA and ISAF forces can indeed push and hold their ground when asked. Yet for the next two weeks, the soldiers are to be pushed into a fight that will suddenly become one of the most ferocious conflicts of recent times in Afghanistan, with the soldiers of both battalions pushed far beyond what is asked of them.

Our story focuses on Charlie Squad, 1st Platoon, 3rd Battalion (Canada). However, due to an organizational shift, they have been pitched in their platoon as half-American, half-Canadian, as a troop exchange between the two battalions, that has been seen to be quite successful. As tactics and equipment is fairly similar between the two units, this non-standard pairing has been seen to work, and hence, the squad is half filled with Canadians, and the other half with Americans. They've been working in the area with a Canadian Provsional Reconstruction Team (PRT), so this is a big jump up for them- rather than protecting Engineers, they're on the vanguard of the offensive.

3rd Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment- Light Infantry

-By Standard, armed with a Colt C7A2 Rifle, or Colt C8A1 Carbine. Automatic Riflemen use the C9 LMG (FN Minimi) OR the C6 GPMG (FN MAG), and Marksmen either use the C14 Timberwolf, or Parker-Hale M82. Grenadiers add a M203 GL to their rifles/carbines. Usually use C79 Combat Optics, or soldiers privately buy EOTech Holographic Weapon Sights, or Aimpoint Red Dot Sights. The Carl Gustav M3 is used by the Anti-Tank/Anti-Fortification man. The Pointman of the team will use a rifle/carbine, and a shotgun- namely the 870 Tactical.
-They wear CADPAT Arid Fatigues.
-As light infantry, they use lighter vehicles. Normally, they used G-Wagens for rapid transport, but increased IED threats have restricted the use of this to mere corresponding work. They use the LAV III, the older AVGP vehicle, the recently acquired Cougar for patrol and assault work, with support from Canadian Chinooks and the US Marines' gunship support.

US 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment- Marine Infantry
-By Standard, armed with either the M4 Carbine, the M4A1 Carbine, or the M16A4 Rifle. Automatic Rifleman is usually armed with the M27 IAR (Very Recent), M249 LMG, or M240B GPMG. Marksman is usually armed with M39 EBR, or Mk11 Marksman Rifle. Grenadier adds an M203 to their rifle/carbine- with soldiers issued by standard a M68 Collminator Sight, or Aimpoint CompM2. Alternatively, a Trijicon ACOG, or in specialist circumstances, a EOTech Holographic Weapon Sight can be acquired. The SMAW is used as an Anti-Fortfication/Anti-Vehicle weapon- and the Pointman uses either the 870MCS, or the M1014 JSRS shotgun alongside a rifle.
-Wear MARPAT Desert Fatigues
-As a US Marine unit, they can rely on significant USMC firepower. They use Cougars and HMMWV M1151 Vehicles for patrol, while using AAV-7A1 and LAV-25 vehicles for heavier assaults, among others- with the unit being able to call on UH-1Y Venom and Sea Knight transport. AH-1 SuperCobras also stand on support, for any CAS or gun requests.

James stands at about 6"1, being a fairly well rounded man, being seen wearing the standard Canadian BDU in Afghanistan, up to 2011 standards. He usually wears a pair of red Oakley sunglasses, over the yellow tint ballistic goggles, for personal reasons, as well as a pair of Oakley SI tactical gloves, bought personally. He has brown eyes and a dark brown hair, though it is shaved very short, as well as a clean shaven face. He has a particular scar on his left arm, that goes from the wrist to the forearm, from a prior training injury.

Bio: Born in Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, James was born to a lumberjack and a schoolteacher, his father and mother respectively. Being in the middle of nowhere, apart from school, there was nothing to do, apart from explore or fuck around- and he did both perhaps, in excess. He was a youthful delinquent, in the boring town, but found his place when he left High School for University, in Vancouver, British Columbia. He quit in his first year, disliking the study he undertook, instead taking an alternative route in the Canadian Army. He was involved in the Invasion of Iraq with the 3rd Battalion, rising to the rank of Corporal, and finding his own niche, a tough lifestyle he had taken forwards since he was young. He had always been active and curious about staying in the outdoors, with his father who took him out into the Boreal Forests, and the military felt like it was a perfect way to see a world beyond his cold and wooded home. While Iraq was completely the opposite, another tour later in 2008, the last in Iraq, put him in good stead to become a Sergeant. In 2010, he was deployed to Afghanistan with the Battalion, and ranked up to Staff Sergeant, gaining his own Squad- Charlie, of which was not yet entirely filled with forces. So as a part of a combined-troop sharing deal, James took a set of US Marines from the 5th Marine Battalion into his squad, as some other squads did- recreating the classic "Devil's Brigade" structure of mixed Canadian and American forces in one fighting unit. He visits home sometimes, and seems to have quite a strong Canadian accent, not being a city boy at all. His nickname, "Chaplain", comes from two sources- his Surname being semi-related to the nickhame, as well as the fact that he tends to be rather guiding to new soldiers, and acts as the Squad's Chaplain of sorts, in matters involving anything that troubles them, from moral support to general moaning.

Personality (Optional): James is fairly well-tempered, calm and speaks decisively when required. He is a trustworthy individual, someone to confide into and even in a world where men are men, James is prepared to listen and hear out any of his fellow soldiers concern, earning him his nickname for giving advice and moral support in the worst of times, from girlfriends to personal problems. He can sometimes perhaps act recklessly on the rare occasion, but doesn't threaten the lives of his own men- usually more himself than anyone. This isn't to say he is the most courageous solider alive- but perhaps moreover, a lucky one. He does have a good intelligence of the situation around him, and his fondness for being outside, as well as his active condition, means he doesn't mind staying in the dirt for long periods of time.

Of course, no problem. Any role in particular you'd like? I should mention, females are inclusive in this RP, in pretty much any role, though I would prefer a female combat medic over a female Automatic rifleman, as it is something that is a little more...well, it's hard to explain, but logical is the word. I mean, women are usually left in a support role in Afghanistan (now this has changed, but this is set in mid-2011 after all), but medics in particular, alongside maybe one or two roles are a lot easier accessible than most- though I'd be happy to have them in any if justified well.

Also, anyone watched Bluestone 42? As far as banter goes, that is an awesome series, and while it isn't perfect to illustrate the horrors of war, it does a damn good job of showing what war even in the calmer points is like.

Natalie clambered back up, moving from cover to cover as she took out another soldier that was shooting on Victor, taking a few rounds, yet moving with a flair and elegance that someone of her size, height and weight should not have possessed. Moving to a concrete post, she took a Flashbang and quickly set off the pin, before bunging it over into the concentrated area of the torpedo storage room, keeping her head well in. A round richcheted off the side of her neckbrace at the same time as the flashbang going off and sending a volley of white light inside the room. She swore, turning and with a certain aim, taking the cartel member down, the 9x19mm rounds puncturing him quick and fast, with little noise for it. The big kevlar suit sat on Natalie well, as she jogged, her bulk truly seen as she looked like she meant business right here, right now.
"Whiteout, bastards!" She yelled, as she moved around, taking her USP.45s from her holsters as she moved immediately into the smoke of the flashbang.

It had been an extra-strength- as if the original wasn't good enough, this flashbang had more capability, and Natalie's eyes had been stunned, even around the corner looking directly away. It hurt, but the sting in her eyes was easier for her to deal with than enemies. Some were on the floor, firing wildly, a few pelleting Natalie's lower half armor as she took them out, with clean shots, moving through as one suddenly ran into a wall from the effect. Taking cover by a vat of sorts, Natalie fired over, USP.45s in both hands, the recoil tolerable due to the sheer force behind her wrist. She took another man down, before switching to her Shovel, which found it's way into the man who had fallen over, completely dazed and confused. The wound was fast, and left no trace, as she stepped past him, Shovel in her right hand and her partly empty USP in her left. She fired a few more rounds into a man with an AKM at the far end, quickly clipping him as he failed to slide behind his cover in time, unlike Natalie who could take a few rounds, as she went for hers. Getting new magazines into her USPs, followed by the AS VAL, she rose up and fired back out of the torpedo room, looking to Victor.
"Whatever you're going to do, do it now! Throw your C4 brick into the middle of the room, I'll rig up the rest!" Natalie yelled to Victor, as she took out her slabs of C4, looking around at the rest of the processing plant- the place a massive Coke factory, built solely for making cocaine of a mediocre quality, but high value.

Getting charges set within each processor, she wired each up to her clacker, as Victor held the line, the process taking about a minute or so. She kept the detonator close, as she moved to Victor's position, shooting her VAL as she slid into cover, half of her exposed as she kept her head fairly down below her neckbrace, firing away.
"We need to get out of here, charges are rigged, back the way we came right?" She asked, as she then pushed over a set of cover, going to another, as suddenly, the noise of a helicopter boomed. And Natalie realized one thing in particular. It wasn't theirs. It flew in low, headed right for the exit of the submarine pen, and it looked like a Little Bird, from first appearances. But it wasn't anything of the sorts- it looked like it wasn't theirs, to begin with. It was whatever this cartel was hauling, and Natalie realized it was armed. Two M134s and FFAR rockets. This was military grade, an AH-6 of some sort, and it wasn't friendly. It began to slowly fly in, miniguns blazing on the concrete dock, avoiding use of the rockets for now, as the pilot assessed the situation, of what was going down. Bullets flew. So this was what it was like to be on the far end of her minigun, she thought to herself. It was frightening, but she always had kept a game plan, and right now, this pilot had made a dumb move.
"Shit, shit, shit! Victor, right into the water, full dive, just do it!" She exclaimed, the guns still firing away, as Natalie counted on only one thing. Too much shit had being going down in the last two minutes, and it was a horrifying mixture of sick and anger. The thing was, the cocaine facility relied on a lot of Propane, and Natalie could only guess that the concrete structure would throw the pilot off, from his already low-flying position. And right now, it would force him out, of the narrow sub pen. And Natalie knew that Victor had a certain device with him, the grapple- and that perhaps, they could just turn the tables in a very intricate way. Natalie could have been mistaken for a blonde with big boobs, a big booty, a big body and so on. But she had a brain to match. One that worked like Victor's, for survival, even in the most unorthodox of ways. She almost moved in a way that took him down into the water too, as a knee-jerk reaction to get them out.

Throwing herself off the concrete and into the water, the noise of a FFAR kicking off the concrete where they were made the decision altogether more rewarding, the force kicking all the air she had taken in. Natlaie kicked hard, aware her flippers weren't on, searching for her rebreather pipe, the lack of air blurring her head a little, the shock from the rocket blast inside being a significant one. Taking it from her back, she put it into her mouth, sucking hard as she knew it was going to be needed, checking the clacker, as she raised it in front of her bare eyes. Swimming as best as she could under, she saw the outline of the helicopter slightly rotate, as she saw Victor by her side, close by when they had gone in.
"Okay, Victor, you need to trust me on this one...get the grapple again, just fire the line onto the helicopter's skid. Wait for my mark." She said, as she slowly came a few meters off the surface, Pulling the gloved hand, the clacker clicked, and the blast was immense, the helicopter being thrown almost into the wall, though the pilot held it, almost wanting to get out. Yet he had no idea what was about to happen- something that was completely the unexpected. Natalie was close to Victor, as the water physically shook from the blast, the whole concrete structure slightly vibrating from the sheer volume of Propane that went up, and the machinery totally gone. A mission success. But Natalie knew their extraction wasn't going to save them with this on hand. And as the chopper slowly stabilized, starting to get out, Natalie knew it was going to be something different. She'd never hijacked a helicopter before, but there was always a first time for everything. And there was nobody she'd rather be doing it with than her fiancee.

I mean, a botanist I guess would be responsible for charting all the weird and wonderful plants of a new world. So who knows what could be growing- trees that glow in the dark due to a luminecent compound, or crazy shit like that. Also, they'd be responsible for food in time- I mean, even if the exos can keep going, there's only so long our people inside will, so the local food sources will eventually come down to that.
