Current 10+ years of an RP idea, finally finished, on 10.10.2025. Goodnight Raven Squad, you were the best, wildest, most silly near future SOF RP that lived on the guild, and you got a worthy send off :)

Bio

I've RP'd for the best part of over 15 years now here on the Guild, and particularly like military settings, both contemporary, past and near future. I have even dabbled in a little more experimental RPs, as well as created a plethora of 1x1s over my time in the guild. I like creating RPs with a distinct flavour- and often shift between narrative-led RPs to semi-randomised plots. I've been more a GM lately than a player, and don't really lean into fandom- instead, exploring my own universes lifting themes from other source material.

My main interests are military-themed, near-future RPs, with a focus on technology. But I'm beginning to push what that RP idea looks like- taking inspiration from lots of media and focussing on the fun, indulgent side of RP, whilst also exploring the lows and emotional side.

Raven Squad is a project over seven years in the making, and focusses on a class-based, eccentric yet half-grounded near future special forces team that acts as a response team where you can't send any special forces team in. It's incredibly dumb, incredibly loose, and yet, has delivered some of my favourite plot points in RPG. A brainless action flick a la John Wick and Kingsman meets a complex thriller with a fun left turn in it, Raven has been the culmination of over a decade of loving special forces RPG, gaming influences and other silliness in a package that has provided players with something quite different to a normal military themed RPG. While at an end, this is an RP that is a signature- it's silly as hell, takes itself barely seriously, and is what peak fun military RPG to me should be.

Delta Hyper is a love letter to Wipeout, F1's Drive to Survive (Netflix) and contemporary Formula One, with influences from solarpunk, cyberpunk, transhumanism and other posthumanist concepts. An RP that follows pilots in their ups and downs, it's a story that hasn't got me playing an actual character, but framing the camera at each pilot (played by others), and presenting it as if it were a documentary. Lifting elements from TTRPG, this is a Racing RPG like no other and no parallel exists- using dice rolls and randomisation, with a stats-driven system to generate race results, rather than actually RPing the races, players experience the fast-paced, dynamic world of anti-gravity racing. This means that come Qualifying and Race, the results are genuinely a surprise to everyone- and based on decisions made through dilemmas and decisions made between races. Friendships, rivalry, the glamour and even a little political undertone play out in 2094, in a colourful, utopian future that focuses on the fight to take first place.

Then there's Tactical Breach Wizards: Fireteam Hex. First use of any set IP as a formal setting, this is an RP that offers a darker mirror to Raven Squad, focussing on the other side of the equation- unlikely heroes in an uncomfortable position. I don't normally do fantasy, but the world, the lore, the feeling of the characters and the ability to write a comedy just was too difficult to pass up. An RP that focuses on a group running away from a variety of threats as wanted mercenary wizards in the middle of a post-revolution, Eastern-Europe adjacent 1990s to present Polavia.

roleplayerguild.com/topics/197399-dis…

Lastly, Dispatch: Heroes of Claremont. This is another IP-adjacent world, albeit drawing on a different setting and a new cast of superheroes. As my "first" proper superhero RP, this combines workplace comedy, a Storyteller-lite system and a fun, diverse, and large cast together in a dynamic, diverse setting.

I'm pretty flexible and try and get back to people on ideas and responses, but sometimes, I may become very busy and it will take some time till I am un-busy. I aim to clear posts within a week!

Neat. What time period is the RP set in- and sorry if some things in my CS aren't perfect.

Name: Doctor Oscar Sebastian Eden

Age: 29

Gender: Male

Appearance:
Oscar is roughly 6"0 in height, being fairly skinny and fairly lean for an individual such as him. Contrary to most perceptions of general geeks, he looks fairly attractive, with messy brown hair, blue eyes, and a slight stubble, that sometimes becomes a beard. Youth isn't on his side anymore- but he still looks smart, like he takes care of his appearance. He wears a blue cotton T-shirt, and a pair of outdoor trousers, olive in color. He can sometimes be seen wearing a pair of black sunglasses, attached to which is a Google Glasses-type interface, for direct involvement in his immediate surroundings, while a scar on his left arm from a previous cut sustained from an injury on Earth, in the Mojave following a slip, remains with him. He isn't a mercilessly strong or trained soldier, or a particularly stunning individual. In fact, he's a geek of the new era- and has some class, while maintaining, if not pushing the envelope of his academic study.

Background:
Oscar Eden was born to a teacher of a mother, and a Geologist father, in what is currently the United Kingdom. An academic background, one that cultivated his thirst for knowledge. He went to the University of Cambridge to study Earth Sciences, being one of the most capable and intelligent among his peers, a person that had an immense passion for the study of the world below his feet, and it's composition. But Oscar went beyond that- he wanted to see other worlds, beyond his own. Following his graduation, his Master's degree, and his PhD, giving him a title of a Doctorate, he moved on, enlisting in a Space Programe, that gave him the capability to go far beyond what he had done on Earth. A well respected individual, he was given an Exoskeleton, of which he customized for his own needs, though he was instructed to keep it armed in the case of it being requisitioned by local military forces- and sent to the Moon, followed by Mars, to conduct sampling, of these worlds. A drone may pick up dust and give a spectroscopy or an analysis. He often found himself, with a few others, at the bottom of age-old lava shafts and places where drones simply did not go, carrying out a full spectrum of chemical analysis and understanding the composition of these two worlds far better. His work was well-published in scientific journals, and he embarked on an expedition, to a new planet. Planet 4578's finding, and subsequent research, brought the light of a new dawn for humanity. And the scientists always have a fast-ticket to an adventure like this. Oscar headed to the Space Station orbiting the planet, Tyo, and lived there for several months, from it's near-early inception to it's full development, as another team prepared to send itself down. And Oscar wasn't going to miss a chance like this- every academic part of his body bringing him to find out what this new world entailed, and what it had. And of course, he wanted to step on a new planet because...well, that chance didn't come often, if you kept refusing it.

Personality: Calm and quiet, Oscar sticks to himself, though he sometimes can go in depth and become a little more flesh and bones. He sticks out of the worst of arguments, not preferring to take the lead, though he's clever enough to figure out things for himself, and either butt in and put across an idea he's contemplated, or at least why they can't do it a certain way. He tends to impart good advice, and seems to enjoy just simply living a life less ordinary, being adaptable and at least level-headed when things are even at their worst. It's not because he doesn't realize the gravity of a situation- it's rather, he is already thinking of a way to solve it. And while this facade cracks from occasion, Oscar on the whole will sometimes let himself go when needed, other times just staying on hand and out of confrontation. He doesn't mind alien life- of course, he is there to study it, but he is no biologist, or botanist. He's there to understand what it is that makes it work, and if it hurts humanity, he's going to defend.

"There's always something to find out. And we owe it to ourselves to find out what's going on."

EXO suit:

Vanguard

Roughly 7"5 in size, "Vanguard" is a personally constructed suit of armor for Oscar, serving as his Exo, and being a tool that sits roughly between the Engineer's Exo, and the more run-of the mill Exoskeletons. It places a focus on mobility without compromising armor, against environmental and human-based hazards. Mounting a 12.7mm jacketed HMG in the right arm, and a spare left hand that can take a personal weapon of his own or someone else's. It's been a little customized, yet remains fully functional. Lightly armed compared to a regular Marine's mech, it still sits as a machine that uses a two-layered composite system, mainly using a polymer inner and a titanium outer shell, which offers a fairly stable protection from both small arms and environmental hazards. It's Top-Heavy because the majority of the protection, as well as the operator's position, is seated higher in the armor. And this gives a better view, being more suitable for manning ground-emplaced equipment that non-suited individuals would lumber. The 12.7mm HMG is old-fashioned for a tech like this, but can punch through at least an inch of armor, no problem, being fed by a mechanism that is proven not to rust, and most of all, adapted so it can fire in a non-Earth atmosphere, such as different pressures or a lack of any, due to it's variable pressure system for cartridges. The armor doesn't have a direct vision to the operator, using a pair of cameras mounted between the blue light close to the top. This however, gives the widest, or closest to 180 degrees possible, whilst also being protected, and able to use thermal, Night-Vision and other spectrums (wiring to 3D oscillation imagery and UV). And those cameras are pretty hard to knock out, being also wired within the main bulkhead. It is well thought out, and while a little different, stands as an armor that provides both the mobility and protection required of an Exoskeleton of this type- being almost able to lift 500kg easily, typical of this class. It has a rudimentary "Jump" ability, allowing for small blasts of jumps, providing no equipment is being carried, from one position to another- perhaps going up by about 3m maximum, and 8m forwards maximum. It is no jetpack, but for getting over ledges, small bluffs and formations for observation, it's useful. Movement speed is roughly that of a human being, maybe around that of a very athletic one, even with all the weight.

Work Skill: Exceptional Earth Scientist (to you and me, Geologist meets Chemist meets Physicist). This is a person who wouldn't just tell you the rock you were standing on, but when it was formed, what makes it the hardness it is, and what makes it useful, and why that's a problem, or a great solution. And more. For a new world, an Earth Scientist such as Oscar is important, to gauge what a world like this is going to require to need. This includes the atmosphere- and his role as a Chemist, and Geologist, is to perhaps better understand what this new world is made of. He isn't a fighter, but understands his predicament, in and among much of the problems from the Old World. His specialism makes him an important member of the team, learning to understand what they're going to have to do in relation to the world they stand in. He understands how to assess Chemical processes, as well as Geological ones in the environment around them, sometimes trying to understand the wider world in general that perhaps an explorer, soldier or medic might miss out on. So this includes inorganic materials, such as rocks and the like- useful resources for use in assisting on the planet.

Personal weapons:
Lightly Armed due to his nature as a Geologist/Chemist- only has a semi-automatic pistol.

Survival gear:
-Spare O2 Suit-Attachable or Man-Portable Rebreather Equipment (For Hostile Sampling Environments)
-Survival Tent (Suitable for four operators)
-Three Days of Rations
-Tablet (Note Taking, etc.)
-Five Days of Water+Water Bottle
Black Nanofibre Rucksack (Large, Fits to the Suit, carries sampling equipment/other kit)
-Infrared Spectroscopy Equipment, Core Sample Drill mounted in suit +Other (Small) Sampling Kit

RP example:

Oscar breathed hard. looking out. His Exo was space-proof, after all, like the others were. They had to be to survive in a zero-gravity environment, the optical camera staring out from the top-half of Vanguard allowing him to view the world below, the peering view through the blue lights clear as ever. It was a time out he wanted, just a time to relax, think, rather than sit and write analysis on studies that had been relayed below. This data was shaky, but the planet was promising. They'd be going down soon themselves he reminded himself, and he'd never stepped on another world yet, not outside the Solar System. Mars and the Moon had been experiences, places where he had grown his academic portfolio, as a new scientist needed for a new era of space. A Golden Era. Now, he was going to be assigned with his team to find out more about this new world, far, far from their own. He'd been on Earth too long, and the process of getting from his homeworld, the only rock in existence that had supported human life for thousands of years, to here, was a big jump. A new beginning for humankind would come if this planet was suitable enough for habitation. Exhaling, he looked over at the suit analytics, an overlay in his suit's HUD. The camera faced out of the top-heavy part of the suit, between the blue light, to offer as best as it could a 180 degree field of vision. It wasn't perfect, but it would do. A thruster pack, as well as a sealed O2 supply sat on the suit's back compared to the regular rebreather that took in CO2 or other replacement gases that would be more suited for a planet's atmosphere. In zero-G, he couldn't feel it's weight, nor could the suit. He felt like he was light, weighed nothing. EVA was a process that he had been taught many a time before, but looking out on an alien world and an alien sun was surreal. Engaging the left booster, he looked over to the crew carrying out some light repairs on the end of the station, in itself a marvel of science and engineering. Oscar was a Chemist and Geologist first. An Earth Scientist. an incredibly smart individual, understanding how worlds like this one worked in it's processes and how to assess the rock with his own reinforced gauntlets in the suit. And that world below looked incredible. Unlike Earth, yet so similar. Deserts, a pair of Poles, sparser oceans and a few lakes, this world a little more devoid of water yet having an atmosphere, of sorts. He wanted to find out more than any drone could. He wanted to see it for himself, but for now, he could only peer through the few inches of metal that stopped his blood boiling and freezing, simultaneously. Space was cold, punishing, unrelenting. And perhaps this new world would be just so. But it would be a place to be, one day, for more humans. Not just men like Oscar. It'd be a place for a better, cleaner, and more sane future. Rather than the hassle and problems, a new start for culture, arts, science and individuals to flourish. But that was too far in the future. Changing his itinerary, he adjusted the thruster pack, heading for the airlock of the station, as the suit's AI kicked in and helped almost auto-guide him before he hit the side and did some damage to his suit and the station, better for the airlock. He had work to do, and they'd be going soon. He had to get himself packed, and whatever else was needed.

RP Theme Song:
Sigur Ros- Colors
Why? Because I can imagine one of our characters, waking up, standing tall in an suit, looking over a mountainous, hostile and barren glaciated landscape, with this in the background.
Hmm, that's interesting. That might be the case- I wouldn't be altogether surprised, in an environment like that MARPAT Desert would become quite applicable.

It is, though they wouldn't wear it while out ona mission with marines. lol

Fair enough, though I do know that Corpsmen do wear slightly different camo to the rest of the Marines- not a lot different, but it's distinctive I hear.

Just changed a few little details in mine- nothing significant.
Sweet, I like that character also, sounds good. That blue digital I believe is a real Navy camouflage- it differentiates her from the rest of the Marines/Canadians, which is fairly useful I guess. I'll add a few things in my CS here and there, to kink out a few of the imperfections I feel- now we wait for the rest and an IC should be coming in no time.
GEOLOGIST/CHEMIST. FUCK YEA. I am in, as a Geographer/Chemist (studying), I'll take that.

Being a Marine CORPSMAN (so a navy corpsman) Wouldn't i have navy ranks instead of marine ranks?

No worries- that is true, they'd be likely a Petty Officer or something along those lines, as they'd be a US Naval Corpsman. Should have mentioned that- but it is one specific thing to that role I suppose.

Fortunes, I love the CS. Nicely done- that is a good format.
The wheels of the hype train continue to turn! The OOC is up!

GG. Setting up an OOC now I feel would be right, so I'll post back when ready- it won't be significantly more information than what we have here, but it will be a place for CSes and all.
