Current 10+ years of an RP idea, finally finished, on 10.10.2025. Goodnight Raven Squad, you were the best, wildest, most silly near future SOF RP that lived on the guild, and you got a worthy send off :)

Bio

I've RP'd for the best part of over 15 years now here on the Guild, and particularly like military settings, both contemporary, past and near future. I have even dabbled in a little more experimental RPs, as well as created a plethora of 1x1s over my time in the guild. I like creating RPs with a distinct flavour- and often shift between narrative-led RPs to semi-randomised plots. I've been more a GM lately than a player, and don't really lean into fandom- instead, exploring my own universes lifting themes from other source material.

My main interests are military-themed, near-future RPs, with a focus on technology. But I'm beginning to push what that RP idea looks like- taking inspiration from lots of media and focussing on the fun, indulgent side of RP, whilst also exploring the lows and emotional side.

Raven Squad is a project over seven years in the making, and focusses on a class-based, eccentric yet half-grounded near future special forces team that acts as a response team where you can't send any special forces team in. It's incredibly dumb, incredibly loose, and yet, has delivered some of my favourite plot points in RPG. A brainless action flick a la John Wick and Kingsman meets a complex thriller with a fun left turn in it, Raven has been the culmination of over a decade of loving special forces RPG, gaming influences and other silliness in a package that has provided players with something quite different to a normal military themed RPG. While at an end, this is an RP that is a signature- it's silly as hell, takes itself barely seriously, and is what peak fun military RPG to me should be.

Delta Hyper is a love letter to Wipeout, F1's Drive to Survive (Netflix) and contemporary Formula One, with influences from solarpunk, cyberpunk, transhumanism and other posthumanist concepts. An RP that follows pilots in their ups and downs, it's a story that hasn't got me playing an actual character, but framing the camera at each pilot (played by others), and presenting it as if it were a documentary. Lifting elements from TTRPG, this is a Racing RPG like no other and no parallel exists- using dice rolls and randomisation, with a stats-driven system to generate race results, rather than actually RPing the races, players experience the fast-paced, dynamic world of anti-gravity racing. This means that come Qualifying and Race, the results are genuinely a surprise to everyone- and based on decisions made through dilemmas and decisions made between races. Friendships, rivalry, the glamour and even a little political undertone play out in 2094, in a colourful, utopian future that focuses on the fight to take first place.

Then there's Tactical Breach Wizards: Fireteam Hex. First use of any set IP as a formal setting, this is an RP that offers a darker mirror to Raven Squad, focussing on the other side of the equation- unlikely heroes in an uncomfortable position. I don't normally do fantasy, but the world, the lore, the feeling of the characters and the ability to write a comedy just was too difficult to pass up. An RP that focuses on a group running away from a variety of threats as wanted mercenary wizards in the middle of a post-revolution, Eastern-Europe adjacent 1990s to present Polavia.

Lastly, Dispatch: Heroes of Claremont. This is another IP-adjacent world, albeit drawing on a different setting and a new cast of superheroes. As my "first" proper superhero RP, this combines workplace comedy, a Storyteller-lite system and a fun, diverse, and large cast together in a dynamic, diverse setting.

I'm pretty flexible and try and get back to people on ideas and responses, but sometimes, I may become very busy and it will take some time till I am un-busy. I aim to clear posts within a week!

Fair enough- this RP has really gotten it's feet off the ground (hehe, that pun there)- though one quick question for Antoine's character:

The Gryphon wingsuits are like a more non-flexible variant- they're polycarbonate I believe, rather than those squirrel suits that are moreover made of a fabricky stuff and can be adjusted in flight (personally, what I thought you'd have). You seem to go between the two- but I can assume the latter when you mention the former- they are two radically different things, but they're both just as awesome. They're just two different things just to let you know, you can edit it altogether or whatever you want best. I'll just say Natalie has a regular wingsuit of sorts and edit that in. So to just highlight it, top link is the normal one, the Gryphon is the second- just wondering really in terms of what specifically they have.

Also, they'll be an operation soon that I will slowly lead into. This is awesome.
Roger that. I mean, when I say medium, Li's character is something I would like- moderately armored, but not insane like the heavies, more than the Lights. Antoine, our team's infiltrator is basically a ninja, but none the less, you can post me what you want to develop.
Hmmm..well, tell you what, what character you thinking of? That is sort of Antoine, but PM me what you're thinking of. We might need a "Medium" character, but PM me so forth.
Somewhere on Bouvet Island, somewhere in the South Atlantic
1200 Hours

The cold brushed into the Airbase, the artificial ground off the icy glacier of Bouvet able to just about accommodate a C17 Globemaster, and right now, one sat in a massive hangar. A couple of F35A jets, and a few Desert Patrol Vehicles sat around other parts of the base, with even a Pandur II APC and a V22 Osprey, that looked like it could be put away into the C17 for transport, was there.

But there was almost nobody here. The air crew were by their aircraft, and overall, only a few buildings were around, the place abandoned by the Norwegians ten years ago since being constructed 20 for a "security" purpose in the South Atlantic, with maybe jets and helicopters here. But there was one particular building to note. It was a concrete-reinforced structure, looking like some sort of nuclear bunker, in which most of the team sat around within, in their spare time. It was mostly underground, but heated, keeping the freezing cold out. Imran sat with the others in the big comfy lounge for Scimitar members, himself sat by a desk and busy doing Chemistry work, with a laptop, a pen and paper, and some ridiculous equations. Just some paperwork, he said to himself. They had gone out on a few operations in the last few weeks, and a few trinkets were here. Pictures, desks, but it was mainly a few sofas, a Satellite TV and a few other things. A suit of a heavy gunner sat in one corner, as an ornament of some sort- one that seemed to have been taken down by the fragile headplate. A cooler with weak beers and spirits as well as soft drinks was in the lounge, and it was like a man-cave of sorts- and in through the next door, a large underground shooting range paired up with an armory that seemed like a vault existed, segregated into the team's individual stuff- the Heavies having their own room for the sheer volume of equipment that they had. Another door from the lounge went to sleeping quarters, for postings here, and a another went to an operations room, closer to the surface. Up top, there was a few other peripheral buildings- one posting a SAM site and several UGVs out of the cold, with another being an abandoned air control tower that served no purpose now.

Inside, Imran looked over to the others, wearing simply a polo shirt and a pair of jeans, wearing his blue turban and at full beard today.
"Guys, you been out there today? Shit, Svetlana and Antoine have been out for a long time, up on the glacier. I mean...who knows what they are up to there, and you all know what Svetlana can be like." Imran said in his posh English-Pakistani accent, chuckling, just hoping the cold hadn't hit the giant Russian's head. The giant Swede occupied a lot of the large room to Imran in some way, and even Imran had to say that Bjorn's combination of a beard and his dark ponytail did scare the literal shit out of him. The Japanese girl seemed rather small, but had a significant place, as well as Howard, being how he was today. Sikhs couldn't drink alcohol, so Imran had a bottle of warm tea by his side, as he carried on working, aware that nothing had come through today from Spectre- a man that the team simply knew as just one contact, that sometimes told them what they faced. Imran kept his sat phone close by on the table, aware that when it rang, they were going. Spectre was simply a front for whatever it was, Imran judged- it had to be a higher entity, such as the UN or NATO that had this force in place. But really, Imran had no idea. They were just dealing with groups and organizations that were more than terrorists, more than simple bombers. There were powerful people, with connections to governments who had more technology than they should have had. They had modern rifles, hell, armor and equipment that should not have existed in their hands. They were sometimes all just Chinese, or multinational. The rogue groups came under the classification as "Ultrasergents", being a mixed grouping for enemies that had anything from heavy armor to mysteriously acquired modern equipment. Special Forces would never stand a chance against them- and they waged war covertly, quietly tapping out governments across the globe. And they had to stop it, and had every means. That was all Imran knew- that they were a counterbalance.
"Hmm...we really need to go out again. Last time when I think we saved that politician in Azerbaijan was too close. I mean, I had to run with him, all the way to the fucking van while these fuckers are trying to level the embassy!"
Meanwhile on an inactive and glaciated part in the central of the island, were an unlikely two. Svetlana, wearing thick thermals and a black winter jacket of some sort along with a Russian hat, looked back at Antoine, as she looked down, the glacier ridge huge, as she put away her crampons and her ice picks, clambering onto a vista point. Svetlana only needed to look at Antoine, to know that she lusted over her truly. She wanted to on times like this, ask her out. Just to spend some more time, do more. But she didn't know that Antoine was in love with Bjorn- or that Bjorn liked her own curves very much. Perhaps they were at different levels, but Svetlana knew they were going down. Svetlana herself, you could tell had distinctive features, both at where you knew to look- and they in themselves, were pretty overwhelming.
"Hmm...wingsuiting. Long time since I do this. We go down to base, down there." Svetlana said, widening her wingsuit, oversized clearly to accomodate for her. She widened the wings out, as she secured it to herself, checking the parachute, looking at Antoine, as she checked the legs. She had a perfect view over the artificial ground that made up the airbase- the concrete extending a tiny bit from the landmass. But there wasn't a direct route there- and Svetlana knew that they would be skimming the ground down a steep glacial ridge to get there. A mixture of adrenaline and lust for Antoine just got Svetlana going, as she readied up.
"You ready?" Svetlana said, the seven foot six mass of Russian looming over Antoine's back, Svetlana perhaps a little unaware that if Antoine turned her head around, she'd barely come up to the Russian's pair.
Nice- I'm going to get to work on getting the ball rolling. Just a nice calm post- I did want to get our guys right into the midst of it at first, but I decided I might as well do this.
It is the aim really- a lot of the systems are adapted from Future Force Warrior (US) stuff and the FIST programe that the UK has, with other elements.A lot of it exists subdernally in the NATO forces on Stratis- their vests, their helmets as well as that Google-Glass styled IFF friendly identification system for various sunglasses of various type really helps out in that regard, as well as comms, and sights. CTRG has a little beyond, with their Dragonskin/Composite plate carriers over the usual vests used by the other NATO forces, not to mention updated other features in a soldier's inventory. Though that said, FIA is just your basic guerilla group, except with obtained F2000s, TAR-21s and even a few CSAT and NATO weapons interspersed. Speaking of CSAT, they have their own future soldier program- and it is a leap beyond NATO's, if you've see what CSAT look like in game. It's a nice blend of both mobility and very good carrying capacity. Their helmets in particular show it well enough- and as you'll see in points in the RP, it might feel that CSAT has the superiority to NATO in some areas. Scary.
Wellll....not entirely. Distinct differences, but parallels will exist.

Likewise- it's something out of the ordinary, and I am liking the direction that it's taking. I do have a taker for Li- though she should be around soonish to post an CS, we'll go on anyways.
I did favor the idea- though I may have it so that B is some sort of smaller outpost for the team in the field- a safehouse to get to if shit hits the fan when they are out on the world.

Also, got to say- Imran is going to be a pretty unique character among many I've done. Wheras Svetlana is similar in many regards to a certain character from a 1x1 (yeah, you know) with a few differences inter-spruced across various areas, Imran is a very unique character in terms of what he can do- though obviously, I don't want to make any character vastly OP. There's disjointed combat triangles- Heavies take out everyone, Mediums take out Lights- but it breaks in terms of Lights being able to theoretically take anyone out in the right circumstances (Stealth with Antoine, and Long-Range with Howard), even Heavies. Antoine may be so ninja, she may be able to rig C4 onto a unsuspecting heavy's back, or Howard might hit a flamer's fuel tank with an incendiary round...yep. Whreas mediums can sometimes do the same, given the right circumstances- it's all about how they are applied, though the Heavies are basically walking meat shields if not shot in the wrong place.

The enemy that we will be up against I might as well mention, is also further unlike any other. Everything from Militia Taliban and your general terrorists will be around, but expect far more. Eight foot armored exoskeletons, with 25mm Autocannons and enough armor to make an MBT look soft, as well as even limted extents of mechs and stealth groups are on the way. You'll figure out how to kill it, hopefully. It's scary- Scimitar will fight very, very advanced enemies from time to time, and other times, walk through waves of grunts. Though I want to have a comedic scene where one of our characters casually steals one of those armored exoskeletons, and casually proceeds to infiltrate an enemy base posing as one. :D
You'll be happy to know the RP goes underway soon- Nobody's character will soon be set up. In terms of their base of operations, a couple of locations of bases near airstrips of some sort spring to mind- with myself inclined to the first:

A) An abandoned airbase built on artificial ground off Bouvet Island, a Norwegian depedency in the South Atlantic. It is the furthest island from any major land mass in the world, and is fully in Scimitar's control. It's in the middle of nowhere, and as a result, is perfect for training- as well as the glacier offering plenty of wingsuit opportunities and Arctic-based training.

B) A large hangar somewhere on Singapore's Changi Airport, away from most of the airline terminals and built in such a way that it is impossible almost to figure out what is there. A C130, as well as a variety of kit means that the team is rapidly deployable to almost any location, hidden in plain sight and inversely from Bouvet, is in the midst of a population centre. Little training facilities, but has this nice accessible feel to it near civilization, a significant one.
Natalie watched on, as she heard Victor. She said nothing, adjusting her parachutes as she watched single-shot fire rain from above her from Victor, as she knew that they had less than a minute to hit the ground. She checked her own gear, looking through her HUD as she picked out the needed targets. Her suit marked them up already, AK fire blaring up and hitting the wrong direction. She kept quiet, as she knew that they were coming in, closer and closer, and bringing the fear of God.
"Shit, we are coming in. You might want to switch to UV or regular optical, since the fire from this thing is going to really fuck up your eyesight, if it's sensitive." Natalie said, looking at her two chutes, the Skull and Crossbones a "cool" feature to have, with Victor's two medicine wheels on his chutes reminding Natalie perhaps of his Mohican heritage. She guessed she was 300m above now, as the wind gusted hard, blowing the two into the compound and right on top.

"I got this- bundle your chute back into the container vaguely, put it in your canister, and rally up when you hit the ground. I'll start the fire now, the real fire, Victor, so check your visual mode." Natalie said, flaming a little from the two nozzles, as she kept one hand on her steering, and the right on her right nozzle. She flamed, the flames spewing below as she drifted in, fire spreading over the frozen floor as it quickly spread, the flames just about reaching at first and then torching more. Her blue UV visual spectrum didn't pick out flames of extreme type, and it at least worked for this sort of thing, allowing her to see where the fire was going without being blinded. It looked like liquid, pouring over a huge area without torching her eyes. She took out at least four men, as she felt literally no kick, coming down hard as she went running. Her parachutes came back down on the snow, gusting a little as her weight anchored herself down mainly. She sent flames spewing into an AA gun emplacement, quickly sending up a huge fireball as the rounds caught light, Natalie smiled, already gathering her own chutes in with her left hand and keeping up a volley of flames with her right. It literally poured, the inside of the compound roasted as tents and anything else in range caught light. She packed it in as best as she could, detaching it as she looked over at Victor.
"Return the favour will you? I'll stash this away." Natalie said, watching as Victor now took over with the predominant fire, the compound's snow melted in large areas and flames kicking up among the tents and wooden huts, Natalie bungling her large container in between the gap of her fuel tanks and her suit's back. Taking both flamethrowers in hand, she looked over at Victor, disengaging the UV view. It was far too bright now- and the place was lit up to hell. An RPG flew off and vaguely slammed into the ground quite a way away, as Natalie chirped with joy, already widening her legs as she saw AK fire now pour on her.
"Well...now they respond. Come on, on me. Clean the camp out- take it out if it moves. Any intel should be in the underlying part of this base- anything above ground is arms, men, insergents and various other scumbags. Flames deal with all of them- I hope grenades do too, Brute." Natalie said, moving in the heavy armor as she felt the relative lightness in her two hands pay off. While the tanks anchored her down with a weight a little heavier than her rucksack full of M134 ammunition, the nozzles themselves, the pair in her hands were flexible, and she could really move with a pacing. Already, she had a very firm grin on her face, as she sprayed flames, walking forwards as fire ricocheted off her audibly, Natalie using an arc to hit targets over a rock formation of sorts. She carried on flaming with her right as she tossed a CS Gas grenade over as far as she could with her left towards a reinforced metal bunker, lobbing it through a window of sorts- which found it's target well. The targets ran out and were flamed very quickly, Natalie dealing far more widespread damage and anarchy at close range. She looked over to Victor, who was busy detonating shit.
"Hmm...I think I just warmed this fight up, look at this shit!" Natalie added, as she directed her nozzle at a squad of infantry, trying to use a PKM and automatic fire on Natalie, as she laughed inside, incinerating them almost instantly as she sprayed them quickly with almost a red-blue hot flame that seemed to spread. She kept moving, richocheting all over, as she smoked out a few enemies behind a container, quickly looking back to Victor.
"If it has weapons, or ammunition, or explosives, you can set C4 or whatever's explosive on it. I'll carry on sweeping this place out- I can smell the bacon even through my suit!" Natalie said in an anarchic way, as she pushed up, moving up a ledge as she saw an RPG fire from behind, Natalie picking up three on her sensor behind. The Trophy System took out the warhead with ease, as Natalie ominously twisted back, looking at the three men. They looked well armed- an AK12 in each of their hands, but they hadn't compensated for that.
"Bad...move. RUN!" Natalie said, smiling as she directed simply a nozzle at them, and let loose. The flames went up to 150m, and in this case, they coated them quickly, turning them into headless chickens, as Natalie turned back, carrying on.
"You really need to try a flamethrower Victor, it might not be conventional, but fuck me...if you want to clear an area quickly, this is your instrument!" Natalie said, as she crunched on the melted snow, the ground black in areas where she had burned huge swathes of enemies and the rock below it burnt. She directed her fire onto a ZSU on a small rock platform, the gunner in vain to turn it. The flames inundated the camouflage netting, as Natalie checked herself, moving up as she moved onto the vehicles.

A technical pulled out, but even it couldn't outrun the torrent of fire. She faced her left hand to the left and her right straight ahead, torching the moving technical that was firing .50 cal rounds at Natalie, the ricochet significant as it even did throw Natalie a little off balance on the fragile footing she had on the melting snow. Her boots were wide and reinforced, having even some spikes at the rear to dig in for the ice, but it wasn't a revelation. She was holding herself up, and keeping what was basically her body weight plus half, if not even more, was proving very tricky indeed. Moving up on the vehicle stash, she pretty much engulfed the rest of the trucks and technicals, the fuel tank of one of the fuel lorries going up with an almighty boom as the metal physically melted on the tanker's own fuel tank, which then in turn detonated the major refueling tank it carried. That set of a chain reaction, which almost threw Natalie off, a fireball kicking up as Natalie could only chuckle.
"Haha...they are not going anywhere!" Natalie added, as she knew that they were tearing this place apart, bit by bit.
