Apotheos was founded in 2031 as a pharmaceutical company. For its first thirty years, Apotheos was a fairly unremarkable enterprise. It developed a portfolio of dementia drugs and attracted the attention of more established companies. Bristol-Meyers Squibb attempted to purchase Apotheos in the late 2040s, but two fatalities during human trials of an Apotheos-developed drug developed to combat human chronic-wasting diseases caused Apotheos' share value to tank, causing BMS to walk away from the deal.

In 2058, Apotheos hit paydirt with the development of Argenta: cancer's "silver bullet". Using a compound isolated from the Asimina triloba tree, Apotheos's new wonder drug induced rapid remission of an array of virulent cancers. Overnight, Apotheos' value soared, overtaking the giant conglomerates that had declined to purchase it a decade ago.

Raghav Shah, the man at the helm of Apotheos when Argenta was released, still retains his post as Chief Executive Officer of the company even now, forty years after assuming control of the company. He has delegated much of the day-to-day responsibilities of operating the company to others. Contrary to outside speculation, Mr. Shah is hardly resting upon his laurels, but has instead devoted his complete attention to the next breakthrough. Argenta, Mr. Shah has told shareholders, merely defanged death; this next project would destroy it entirely. And what product could ever hope to be more sought-after than a cure for death itself?
