It's kind of sad, really. It came out 7 years before SAO, was unique for its time, and had a fairly good story (except for SIGN, SIGN was pretty useless) I figure it was just released before its time.
Either of the two works for me
Somewhere out there, dotHack is crying.
Two of his launched requests got answered, with one accepted and the other declined. He couldn't say he was particularly surprised as to the particular person who'd decided to deny his message. She wasn't much for meeting new people, and he was damn sure that he hadn't shown this specific character profile to any of the five he had sent messages to. Except maybe Okami. Bastard had way too much free time on his hands ever since he graduated.

Aurora accepting it was much more of a surprise, as Makoto was pretty sure that she hated being bothered by randoms, what with being a beta and all. Either way, he wasn't one to look a gift horse in the mouth. He flicked through his GUI again and brought up the VIA to start up a telepathic link with Aurora. As he waited for her to pick up, Makoto sifted through his GUI, reacquainting himself with all his character's - well, his own, technically - skills and equipment.
"Wh-What the hell!?"

Makoto glanced around the foreign environment. Why was it snowing? Last he remembered he was in his room on his computer downloading a series of patches for various gameson his PC. He rubbed his temples to clear his head and gave an long, exasperated sigh. He scanned the environment much more thoroughly this time, taking note of the rather... post-apocalyptic look of the locale. Which was odd. Last he checked, the Mayans were wrong about the whole end of the world deal. He also noted that he wasn't exactly cold despite the winter look. The short Japanese young man glanced down at his attire.

'...Ah.'

'I see now.'

For someone who had just been thrust into the world of a 2D MMORPG, Makoto's face was surprisingly neutral. He furrowed his brow. 'Now how to bring up the status screen...' he thought before the GUI appeared before him. A brief moment of surprise caused him to recoil backwards a bit, making him fall down in turn due to the snow obstructing his fluid movement. He scowled at his own ineptitude before looking at his GUI. 'Great, I'm logged into Touma right now...' Makoto thought, navigating through the icons for the log out, 'I'll just switch characters and get on Kansh..it.' His eye twitched. He stabbed at the 'Log Off' icon to no avail.

"Shit, I'm stuck on my alt!"

Makoto groaned loudly and pulled up his friends list. To no surprise, there was barely anybody on it. In fact, there was nobody on it. It was his alternate account after all, and anyone who wanted to request him was kindly redirected to his main. That was alright though, he knew all the important usernames anyway. A few clicks later and...

[Sending Friend Requests To: Aurora ; Bootsy ; Lily ; Okami]

"Now to play the waiting game," Makoto yawned, taking a seat on a pillar.
Awesome.
Well the power outage that killed my wifi is done, I can post my CS.

Also, I would like to mention that writing his personality was frustrating as hell, and I probably ended up making it a lot more specific than intended >> So consider it a general outline and not an actual, in-depth overview into his psyche since I'm sure I'll be contradicting some of it.

Full Name
Matou Makoto

Username
Touma

Appearance
Makoto is surprisingly short for his age, standing only at 163cm/5'4", and possesses a very slim, petite build with a light skin tone. He has short, unkempt black hair and wide green eyes. His overall appearance could be definitely be described as younger-looking (15-16) than he actually is (???), but not absurdly so - unlike a certain Assassin.

Gender
Male

Personality
[IN GAME]
Makoto is a very demure individual with, strangely enough, a rather rough manner of speech with plenty of potty mouthing to go around. Although he's actually a rather civil person, vocabulary aside. He often appears to be very introspective, brow always slightly furrowed as if he's thinking about something. His expressions tend to be very subtle if he isn't speaking, with exasperated sighs, annoyed grunts, wry grins, and small smiles being the usual variations. He's a very level-headed person, but isn't very confident at the same time. He often works better during spur-of-the-moment operations, as it doesn't let him overthink anything and pick holes in his own strategies. He will, however, voice his opinions regarding other peoples' decisions. Incidentally, Makoto often displays a surprising amount of concern for lower level players, especially those being victimized by higher levels.

All in all, he looks to be a well-adjusted human being.

...And yet something seems distinctly off about him...

[IN REALITY]
Makoto isn't just quiet. He possesses a downright unsettling level of willpower and self-control, a trait which he uses to great effect in concealing the more unscrupulous aspects of his personality. As his online behavior often alludes, he's a very negative person. His worldview couldn't be described as anything less than cold and cynical. He has a very distinct hatred for people, especially those with "power" such as people with friends, skills, looks, and personality; not to mention those that would abuse it. Although, Makoto is fully aware of his pessimistic philosophy's contradictions, and earnestly believes that he himself is weak, stupid, hateful scum just like everyone else. However, instead of striving to better himself, he resolves to drag people down to his level.

Now, don't get him wrong, Makoto isn't the kind of person who'd sabotage someone's life just to take pleasure in their misery. That would just make him even worse than he already is. He's actually an honest-to-God reliable human being, so long as you don't manage to do something to sufficiently insult his sensibilities.

Bio
From a very young age, Makoto had always been teased and bullied regarding his weak-looking appearance and even weaker physical abilities. He didn't really have anyone to truly call a friend. Sure there were the people who said they were his 'friends', but even he knew that they were either pitying him to boost their ego, or using that as an excuse to degrade him even further. Eventually he just gave up and mostly kept to himself. His attendance at school became a very sporadic thing. Sometimes he'd appear consistently for a week or two, and then he'd just disappear, boarding himself in his room for a month, like some kind of NEET.

Makoto took up programming as a way to appease his angry and disappointed parents. This in turn turned into white hat hacking which netted the young man a nice profit. In his free time he was content to read manga and play Elder Tale on his computer, using his father's beta test account, a Samurai/Scribe known as "Kanshou", as his primary character profile. It was with this character that he made contact with the other members of Mystical 5 and the rest is history.

Unfortunately the group broke up, and Makoto found himself playing the game all lonesome, occasionally meeting up with one or two of the others, but never really quite sticking together like before.

And then the Apocalypse happened.

Unfortunately he's now stuck on his alternate character profile, which means he's running a non-standard build on the weakest class and he's sure that most of his friends don't even know who he is anymore.
